How Psychoactive Plants Changed the World | News on Drugs

- A lot of us are coffee-drinking drug addicts that turn into zombies without a morning caffeine fix. But what is the difference between coffee and opium, especially when they both come from a plant? Author Michael Pollan tells us why we should start thinking about our morning coffee in the same way as smoking opium or taking the Native American peyote cactus.
Humans love drugs. Every culture in human history has looked for ways to alter its consciousness. So where does this desire come from? And why are some drugs legal and others illegal? What is it about some drugs that make governments declare war on them? And what on earth is psychedelic toad venom? This is how psychoactive plants changed the world.
In News on Drugs, writer JS Rafaeli chats to fellow drug nerds about their studies to tackle some of the biggest questions in the crazy world of mind-altering substances.

It really says a lot that there are plants that are illegal to grow if you know enough about them, but are completely legal if you don’t
Isn’t that something? The police have to prove you know that they are illegal, otherwise it’s okay. Ummm, I guess it’s legit if you didn’t know that they were not legit.
Legalize drugs and people will better regulate what they will take. The cleaner a drug the more use out of it, and the less undue death from the addiction. I’m sure opinions are many about the subject and I think the big pharmaceutical industry is a great source of options to plants should you have any issues with them. I believe had it not been for the plant’s we wouldn’t have the medications derived from them today
@@jeots962 that last sentence is less of a belief, than it is just fact. All opiates, many heart/blood pressure meds, neurological and psychotropic pharmaceuticals are all derived from a base chemical or several base chemicals initially identified in- and extracted from- plants.
So, yes, you're right. Lol
It's because of how ridiculous it is to make a plant, that you really can't do anything about, illegal. "Don't pick that plant or you're going to jail!"

A better question is why an authoritarian group of people who claim to represent a free democracy are riding around imprisoning people for what is at its absolute worst, willingly poisoning themselves for entertainment.
Right. Let's start locking up fast food goers and drinkin buds!
The answer lies in the last part of your sentence - "poisoning themselves". It's basically people putting themselves out of the workforce for some time, on purpose. Society values hard working people and therefore if you are doing substances, it means you're not working hard at the time of doing the substances and also potentially for an indeterminate amount of time afterwards. The laws are inherently pro-capitalism.
Now this doesn't answer why alcohol is legal, since it arguably puts an individual into a worse state for working than other substances. I think the answer to that lies in coffee/caffeine and also the fact that people who drink are more likely to be depressed or submissive to authority and therefore easier to control. In case of a war, a bunch of drunks with guns would likely be much better than a bunch of stoners with guns (who would be a lot less likely to fight).
That's an awesome assessment.

So headed for the hills. Took some mushrooms and camped by a lake.
All my questions were answered.
I did two things when I returned home.

b. I took up gardening. I went from owning zero plants to owning over 100 plants on my penthouse terrace garden.

I also study how ancient civilisations used drugs. The how and the why.
Anytime we ever tripped we always had an elder or a baba or a trip master.
Ritual is also very important.
For tens of thousands of years. babas or healers roamed around healing people with nothing more than a bag filled with plants I looked at it. The key plants they had was tobacco, opium, cannabis, and a few other herbs. They treated every illness under the sun.
I also feel coffe is nothing more than an allowed stimulant.

Beautifully explained, and confirmed for me the observations i made as a kid/young adult myself, comparing all prohibition examples, seeing the connection that in all prohibitions, the black market just risen through the roof, giving criminals a market to make them profit.
And even the war on drugs keeping back research for humanity. All in the sake of keeping people in check? What kind of price is that, that we are willing to pay such a huge sacrifice in time and resources, that we evaluate it as being worth it?
These years have known more crazy people then ever before, and with crazy i mean indoctrinated, or well past the point of simple confusion, its a mental warfare, in which i strongly feel ww2 and other incidences of inhumane experiments have led to this massive manipulation...
All for greed... I wish they realised the more you have, the more terrified you'll be of losing it...
If we can congratulate the war on drugs for something, it is the point that it has destroyed more lives, deliberately held back knowledge from the people, criminalised us, in all sorts of way for growing a plant, and i can continue, but i guess the point is understood.
Sadly, its still going on today in a world where portugal has decriminalised all drugs, and suicide rates and crime rates have gone down with over 50%... The proof is right in our face happening on earth right now, how come politicians dont see that? Internationally speaking we should be so connected, they can see that this model works, so they can apply it to every western civilised country as well.
Why dont they do it? Profits.
Profits > Humanitarian evolvement, purposely holding us whole mankind back, all just because some fellow humans cant look at themselves in the mirror and evaluate what they have been doing to their fellow man.

could you imagine if we actually do lose coffee due to climate change in the next 100-200 years? future generations would never forgive us
Climate change,, lol geoengineering man you must be young.
they'll just have synthetic alternatives, I'm surprised that isn't a thing now
It is already a thing, coffee darkens the teeth! Caffeine pills do not.
@@thomasbirmili5790 I meant that there aren't mainstream alternatives to Caffeine itself.
Khat extract is a contender, I wonder if there are research chemicals that are trying to make super-caffeine or something
They would absolutely forgive us and would probably be grateful. Abusing caffeine is how you built a dependency on it; no one needs it. If no one could get it, no one could become reliant on it.
Damn, this a damn good docu series
Well, I guess it time to start growing some poppies. I mean, just for floral arrangements of course!
The absurdity of declaring a plant illegal.
Pollan has had the exact same talking points for a little while now. Identical soundbytes on Joe Rogan.
He makes good points though. Sometimes it’s better to just keep repeating yourself until everyone is on the same page.
Great interview and conversation!
Appreciate your comment
Vester Tripps is the legit psychedelic plug. He got shrooms lsd mdma chocolate bars and other..

People with undiagnosed adhd often use coffee or smoking to create the stimulate needed to develop focus. It is a means of self medication and has a similar affect as the medication for adhd.
Yeah I take Ritalin for my adhd but I still can barely focus or function without coffee. It gives me that extra boost of dopamine that my brain naturally lacks even with medication.
Opium For The Masses is a great book.
Sure is :)
Genesis 1:29, and God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be food."
The Bible also basically says medicinal plants used for psychoactive purposes is the path to sorcery which the bible condemns.
There are a lot of poisonous berries out there that you definitely shouldn't eat.
Pass the edibles, man.
@@Ryan88881 just because a wierd old guy has written a book in a cave ages ago doesn't mean you have to follow everything....
@@Ryan88881 well, what verses are you referring to? So your comment doesn't read like 'reefer madness' spew.
Yeah, basically, livin' life leads to death and this whole epoch of humanity can basically be referred to as the confederacy of dunces

I have been telling MD's and drug counselors that my drug problem exists only because of the laws prohibiting the use and possession. When they are finally legalized and taxed I wonder if we will receive an apology for being ostracized from many groups and places. 40 years addicted to my pain meds and the dope to replace them. How nice.
I feel ya! 15yr H addiction here and usage probably worse than ever, especially with the covid isolation.
In those 15yrs I've probably managed a combined total of 2yrs clean ans that was only due to methadone and benzos. Have not had a single clean day in over 6/7 years now 😏
Have never committed a crime, had any police interactions or harmed anyone. The stereotypes are beyond infuriating.
I am able to financially support both a H addiction and my day to day life, have my own house and pay my damn bills.
Yes you will come across criminal 'junkies' but you will also come across a hell of a lot of criminals with absolutely no drug usage! Disgusting how they are able to group everyone together and pass down judgment.
Keep strong my man! 👌🏼
@@marcusjay8103 Thank you Jay. I did finally start living well after my 5th attempt at methadone. But I still get pissed about the mass- ignorance. Glad you've accomplished so much. Peace.
