Revisiting Power Stone

  • I've been a big fan of Capcom even before the moment of conception, but for some reason I never tried out their 1999 classic title 'Power Stone'!
Presented as an isometric party/fighting game, Power Stone takes place in a steam-punk inspired world with a wacky and colourful character roster, as well as some very unique gameplay mechanics.
After playing the game for the first time and doing some research on its development, I was inspired to make a video covering the game!

that "warm & fuzzy" feeling you get playing Power Stone, ALL games coming out during that time had that feel. particularly Nintendo, but especially Sega & Capcom games in the arcade. unique art styles, bright colors, blue skies, fast gameplay with good controls & catchy, memorable tunes. most arcade games were 60fps so frame rates & resolution weren't even a discussion. even the movies & music during that time were unforgettable & its not just nostalgia. we had Biggie & 2Pac, Michael Jackson & Prince, Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant alive & doing their thing at the same time. it was insane. the 90's & early 2000's was awesome & I'd pay an arm & a leg to go back. but for now, we do have emulators for the games & youtube for the rest... man, what a time to be alive.

Damn, I wonder what would have happened if sega survived as a console manufacturer

This was a very fun and creative game franchise. I low-key hoped a reboot game had been created, but oh well.

I've never played Power Stone but if there were ever a series that would fit perfectly on the Switch, that'd be it. My only worry is with the fighting game monetization practices today. I wonder if it'd turn off a lot of casual players in a game like this.

Hearing "I wasn't even alive for the Dreamcast" aged me like a fine milk today thank you 😅 but spot on. This particular slice of the era was my favorite and my jumpstart into my love for niche titles

I feel powerstone as an IP would be really strong now, especially if they did like a Multiversus approach and add a bunch of classic poly sprites of other capcom series. If you've watched Smiling Friends recently, we have Gwimbly as a prime example 😂

I played It last year at a retro gaming event,i had a great time with it in those 2 days. There were many more popular old fighting games there but Power Stone hooked me up the most. I even beat a guy Who already played It before even with my very limited experience. Galuda was the goat, learning to play him on the fly has been so fun

Cool to see someone's take who grew up after the Dreamcast's heyday. It was Truly an amazing system.

Good old Power Stone... although I admittedly have only played the original game at a demo station and on the PSP Collection (my memories are more so with Power Stone 2). Regardless, great series on a great console (and later, on a great handheld).
0:10 - Ouch; making me feel old here. The Dreamcast was the first console that was my own, so I have a lot of appreciation for the system.
1:23 - Maybe though; a Power Stone entry was featured in that massive Capcom leak a few years back. I can still have hope for it.
3:16 - Oooh, interesting. 3DO's M2 seemed to of had quite a bit of support. The 3DO did manage to secure itself 4th place in the 5th Generation, so it had some level of popularity.
4:50 - My pick was always Ryoma; such a cool power change form.
6:13 - As someone with 3 brothers, the sequel having 4 player multiplayer was perfect. Power Stone 2 was effectively the Smash Bros but on the Dreamcast for us in terms of playing and playability.
8:10 - I need to get around to watching this someday. Gosh, love the art style!

Witnessing Power Stone was the last time I received 'next gen shock'. Nothing on the PSX or N64 could touch it.

Loved both this and Power Stone 2. The level design in Power Stone 2 was absolutely insane which sounds crazy to say, but it's incredible to think about how something like Smash, similarly a "platform fighter", still hasn't even come close to matching that kind of imaginative design.
I also remember playing it was fighting game locals ages ago, we discovered the Power Stone competitive community had a ridiculous list of banned strategies.

I used to have a demo disc for my Dreamcast that had power stone on it. It only had two characters on it but man I played it all the time! I miss this game

There's a game call Combat Core that's basically as a spiritual successor to Power Stone. It's on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
