  • I decided to go alllllllllllll the way back to the beginning of the fighting game genre for this video! Released in the 70's, Sega's 'Heavyweight Champ' is believed to be the first fighting game ever made! Unfortunately, due to its age, the game is now considered to be lost media.
There is barely any surviving footage of the game, and its unknown if there are any working cabinets still in existence, so I did what I could when it came to researching and collecting footage for the contents of this video.
    MUSIC:
    Tecks Mecks - killer7
    Splash Wave - OutRun2
Dungeon ~ Kama Palace - Megami Ibunroku Persona
    Last Wave - OutRun2

Understandable; combat itself been an early mechanic for video games to do and a fighting game does have the 'concept of ease' in only having to present two characters. As for the first fighting game, I've often heard that attributed to Vectorbeam's Warrior, so the title here does intrigue me.
0:52 - Interesting designs. I suppose without worry for backgrounds, all the focus could be put on character models instead, but they don't even look like sprites. They kind of look like paper cut-outs, at least from a still screen.
1:51 - There it is, in motion. Wow, surprising given it's time frame. I also see Sega continued to be inspired by this with their later games such as James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing (whom quickly looking up, I'm discovering was actually made by Taito, at least the original version of it was).
2:49 - Understandable; sports typically have clearly defined rules and goals with points being a part of them. It makes a more straightforward road-map in the game design.
4:03 - Arcades certainly had some whacky control schemes. I wonder how many Arcade games never got ported purely because of their control schemes.
5:39 - I'm assuming the lack of cabinets out there is due to them being retooled and reprogrammed into other games.

wow, i actually never heard of this before, always thought Karateka or Yie Ar Kung Fu is the first fighting game
the controls reminds me of Buriki One(in principal, if you remove the boxing glove controller and replace it with regular levers)

This is amazing!! I hope this gets more coverage which will lead to more chances of finding a motherboard, or something.

This was slick. Great intro and made it work with not a lot of material.

The First Game was Draughts from 1952 and Turochamp from 1948.
