The Plaid is weight-reduced and running on the stock Pirelli P Zeros on 19” wheels. (Backseats and most rear material removed. Both front seats are still IN PLACE, along with all door panels, airbags, mirrors, 20 stereo speakers and subwoofer remain intact.) These ~170 pounds make a difference of 0.11 seconds, as proven over 850+ timeslips (9.26 best went down to 9.15).

Greg in his COPO needs to run up against that Cobra!
Absolutely!
Excellent as always Andrew! I am a HUGE fan of these videos!!!!
I can't believe you're R/T was .181. It appeared that you nailed it. Keep bangn' them
Thanks!!!!@@heyralph
Great driving, Greg!
Dang Greg, 8.52?! Wow!
Great competition at the track!! Really impressed with Greg's COPO. He and Camaro have become one and the same
👍 He’s really driving it well, with various early issues (misfires, traction, big wheelies) now sorted out 😃
Great hook up and 8.5 sec pass. Appears to completely dialed in!
That Cobra and Copo need to duel it out. Both drivers have it dialed in with their vehicles
👍Agree!
That Lucid is a beast😍😍
I could think of so many better ways to spend $250k…. lol
@@speedracerjeff Lucid is still a beast 👍🏽👍🏽
The saphire is crazy to keep up with that copo
👍 For sure it’s wild that it can stay that close, although the finish line margin was actually more than 5 car lengths (very hard to see from the starting line but shown on the timeslip, as every 0.1 second of the finish line margin is about one car length)
So on the best passes, the Sapphire would be ahead a car length of your Plaid and 2 Car lengths ahead of a stock Plaid?
@@hotrod182 👍Yes, that’s about right. But we finished 4 car lengths ahead three times because the Sapphire has very little margin of error for imperfect traction. Somewhat under-tired, and perhaps the TC algorithm is immature. But as you said, “best passes” (under perfect conditions), that extra 214 horsepower eventually catches up before the finish line. Yet as we saw 3 times out of 4, Conditions Matter 😃

@@TeslaPlaidChannel is there anything else you can do to the Model S Plaid to get more power out of it? Or is weight reduction basically the only option right now?
Very cool match ups Andrew 💪
Awsome racing you all put down some impressive times
Nice run Greg 👍
Thank you!
Awesome voice over man. Ross is a great guy too!
The tech issue with the Chevelle was that the drivers foot was asleep...SLOOOOOW reacation time...
Buenos arrancones… aquí quedo esperando los anunciados !!
Gracias
Gracias a ti! 👍
Andrew, great races. Always fun to watch.
Thanks Charles! 👍
Looks awesome. Greg keep it up.
I love that Chevelle !! Old school . Greg, you r car is tight and fast! Now , when they say Tesla, is that an electric car?..dont laugh , Im a girl , I can ask questions like that.. and that Little Cobra was really fast and furious,, man, I love this stuff so much.
I love watching these races..Thank you so much Gregory!!!
👍Two electric cars in this video: The Blue Tesla Plaid and the Blue Lucid Sapphire 😃
All the rest are old school gas powered muscle 💪🏽
Oh wow , thank you for that!!@@TeslaPlaidChannel
Welcome to the channel! It's lots of fun.
Thank you! Oh yeah ,this is what I call fun.@@jamesengland7461
Strong run against the Cobra. But it is like running against the COPO Camaro. It would have been good to see the Cobra run against the COPO Camaro, as they seem well matched. It was fun to watch the Lucid Sapphire against the COPO Camaro, and it is impressive that the Lucid is now edging into the high 8s!
👍Thanks Dean! I’ve been talking to the Cobra driver more as he’s getting his NHRA license and I offered to sign off on his application. We’ll see if we can get him lined up with Greg’s COPO this month 👍
$250k to barely squeak into the 8’s….
Just wait until Tesla releases the next updated Model S. It will blow away the Sapphire for less $.
Interesting no one in the comments is acknowledging the sapphire running 8.99. Just a couple of weeks ago, there were a lot of doubters and people ridiculing the claim that the sapphire could run that fast.
I noticed that too
The preposterous comments were like: “it runs 8s every day of the week and beats the Plaid every time no matter what”. Those kinds of noobs were appropriately ridiculed. Conditions matter, as we’ve been saying on this Channel for years… 👍 (And we did beat it 3 times out of 4 in heads up races with both cars on factory tires)
What is there to acknowledge? The car itself had everything to prove and until then the Plaid was out running it mind you using THREE YEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY. Where was the Sapphire in 2021 when the Plaid came on the scene out running everything. The Lucid Air with 1,111hp was getting gapped by three cars minimum to the underpowered Plaid. Same with Porsche. They had no solution for the Plaid until THREE years later. REMEMBER, Tesla was going to release the Plaid+ BACK THEN in 2021 which was touted as an high 8 second car but EM said it was too much then and "settled" on today's Plaid and now all of these "Johnny come lately's" want to gloat on beating three year old technology. Hilarious!! Both the Sapphire and the Taycan Turbo GT will be obsolete by next year when the Roadster and refreshed Model S are released.
Should do a rematch vs the plaid. This guy keeps commenting about his video about how the sapphire is inconsistent depending on conditions and how his plaid will win most of the time but since that first video its been consistently beating top plaid times. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I've seen a time above 9.2 from the sapphire since that first video, despite the modified plaid running around/above 9.3 in the same/similar conditions. Would love to see who wins now that the sapphire is dialed in more.
@@user-zf1ol7op7yHow about acknowedging the fact that the sapphire ran 8.9 here but the video says its running low nines twice in the timestamps? Seems just a little like misleading rhetoric imho. I'm not saying that anyone is claiming the sapphire cant run 8s, but someone who sees the video will assume that the sapphire can't run 8s at first glance explicity because of the timestamps and description, which seems intentional to me.
nice video Andrew
Thanks for the visit 👍
Great video as always!! Andrew!!
Awesome racing footage.
Keep your ford!!! Ford powered!!
Folks!!!!
It’s crazy that in that Sapphire He can leave from there…pick up the kids and stop and get groceries on the way home
Or stop at Costco on the way INTO the dragstrip! We did, and the huge load of stuff hardly slowed us down: czcams.com/video/FVYOaLb2ZOI/video.html
I am curious about doing a stationary burnout to get the tires a little sticky before a run but wondering how that affects the rear brakes.
The Tesla only allows the tires to spin in “drift mode” and with a steep steering angle. We refuse to point our Plaid at the jersey wall to use it. Simply not practical at the dragstrip with well-defined lanes…
Tesla Plaid started1/4 mile with 88% battery charge. Wondering what % of battery was left after that run.
👍The Plaid uses right around 3% per pass, same as the Sapphire. Although the last 3 passes of this night were held until the next video, we made 4 consistent passes in a row of 9.25 (see details in Description). For the whole night of 5 runs, the Tesla used ~16% (it doesn’t show fractions)
Greg sent me.
Thanks Andrew, really enjoy your channel. Did you go to Gainesville last week to see the Pro’s run. Go Erica
Unfortunately no, but hopefully next time 👍
Wow, there were some fast cars that day. I may go back to one of the Thursday T&T soon. Got myself a set of older Model X wheels with the factory Conti tires for the track after I lost 2 tenths with my new Nexen tires. I'll run the Contis at the track and the Nexens on the street.
👍 It’s surprising how much difference tires make, even within a certain class of tire (Summer, DR, All-seasons). I can’t make it this Thursday but might see ya there next week. Meantime, check out the EV money races at Showtime this Wednesday, March 20 😃
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I'm somewhat hesitant to enter an actual competition due to the wording in the Tesla warranty about "Competition". I know that you can "TEST" your car in a Test&Tune session but competing in a competition theoretically voids your warranty. As this is my daily driver, I worry about the warranty. 150k on motors and battery is amazing.. Don't want to risk that. As for tires, I never imagined that a slightly harder tire would cost me 2 tenths.. While it won't seem much to someone not drag racing, but 2 tenths is significant for me. Anyways, will find out what I'll do with the factory tires on an older set of Model X Wheels. Sizes are the same as on my Plaid, so, they should get me back where I was with the Contis.
back in the mid 2000's I used to frequently race bracket events with my '68 Vette race car. I used to be a pretty decent bracket racer but now, I'm just too worried about the warranty. Imagine my battery goes bad and Tesla finds out that I competed in a competition. Sure, there is a chance that they won't find out BUT, what if the car breaks down at the track. Tesla can track where your car is at any given time and if they check, they would see that it broke down in the middle of a drag strip during a competition.. Don't want to take any chances.
@@ivegoneplaid Although different service locations may vary, our local one has no problem with the almost 2000 dragstrip runs that we’ve made on our last 4 Teslas. In fact, the service technician who worked on my (gutted!) car came out and said he’s a big fan of this Channel 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I know that Tesla and Musk really care for and support pro Tesla influencers and as your channel is somewhat sizable, you fall into that category. With my 540 subscribers, I'm not really considered an influencer.. It's my hobby.. Not sure if it really makes a difference with Tesla but I'm not sure if I should take a chance. Based on the wording of the warranty, theoretically, if a failure results from racing (which put a lot of stress on motors and battery), then they theoretically could refuse to cover warranty repairs on those items.
Yeah Greg!!!
Great comment on the chute spring. Cant wait to read comments from the physics guys. I could see it if the spring was pushing on something solid or heavy but the chute is....... I will just wait for someone smarter than me to comment.
👍Indeed, pushing the air alone doesn’t seem enough to give it a shove? Topic at 10:50 😃
What's the COPO Camaro's engine displacement?
It’s a supercharged (blower) 350ci (5.7L). Very well designed, 100% stock from the factory with an ice fed intercooler.
That Cobra ain't going
Jesus that COPO leaves hard!
No beating the sound of high-power ICE
Hey, do have to modulate your throttle when you race? Everyone says you (teslas) just stomp and go, but I suspect there is more to it.
The launch control process requires both pedals. Gotta crank a lotta force on the brake pedal first (pushing to 99% will fail, it’s gotta be 100% down to floor). Then accelerator 100%. Wait 8-10 seconds. Then release brakes. The Tesla’s traction control modulates power hundred of times per second, with far better results than any driver could manage. But of course, the Reaction Time is often the difference of winning and losing, a process that’s completely up to the driver. The car does not help that in any way, and in fact the two pedal process is much more difficult to get right on the tree than a trans brake.
you def have low rt
@@TeslaPlaidChannel
Not sure the physics check out on the chute spring theory 🤣. Is this the first documented 8 second pass for the Sapphire?
Outside of Lucid's own video which is subjective, I couldn't find any other video showing a Sapphire in the 8's. That's what my question was really...
@@davidowlarry Great question 👍 It’s the first time that we’ve seen an actual “owner’s” car hit an 8 in the wild. This driver has many decades of dragstrip experience, and has been trying all the known tricks. Even though he’s removed the floor mats and dropped tire pressure to the point of TPMS sensor warnings, we’d still consider it a fair representation of stock. (Of course not all owners are going to get that phone call from Lucid’s VP plus access to their Engineering team as he did.)
First time I’ve seen it on this channel and in the wild.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel yeah, been interesting to watch his journey and great that Lucid reached out to him to help. Nice to see car manufacturers passionate about their craft. It's wild how fast production family sedans have got into the 8's. Wasn't too long ago when getting into the 10's with mom's daily was almost unheard of without significant modifications.
Just curious how many miles are on your Plaid?
20k miles, still riding on the original tires as delivered in August 2021 👍
(Now with around 900 dragstrip passes)

I am sorry Andrew.I feel a little happy when the ice car wins.
👍We don’t mind 😃
That poor Chevelle driver had so much of his soul invested in that car, not to mention money. It’s over Johnny…..it’s over…..put away the plastigauge…..
Can't wait to see the lawnmower race. They are very fast if awd
Awd vs rwd..lol
2 Different class of cars . Awd 1000hp gas burner will hang 😅
??? RWD won vs AWD in 2 of these 3 races. Not sure what you are talking about… 🤔
What adjustments can you do to your A19,AX4,JX1,AX2,VX54,WHEN YOU LOSE?
Having a street car that is that FAST and happens to double time as a 8sec. care is UNBEAVABLE!!!
The Sapphire? That’s the only 8-sec (8.99) street car here. The COPO and Mustang Cobra are both TRAILERED, as they are not street legal cars. The COPO has no VIN, can’t be registered in any state, uses 2 gallons of high octane race fuel per 1/4 mile, plus also 20 pounds of ice for the intercooler 🧊 (per pass!)
This Mustang Cobra was once street legal, and perhaps with another tire could be driven on the street…
Tesla Roadster is coming next year..... 0-60 mph in 1 second. 1/4 mile ET? Any guess?
If they can do the 1-second metric, we predict a 7.70 ET 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannel That would be sufficient to beat Formula 1 or Moto GP bikes in a drag race... Even beyond the 1/4 mile.
Lucid 8.999
Tesla who
👍Thanks for asking! The Tesla who beat this same Lucid 3 times out of 4. That’s who! 😃
Wow these EV are getting beat by these race cars - congrats!! guys great video
Who would have ever thought that these trailered race cars with one seat and no interior would be able to beat these family sedans that went to Costco earlier this day? 🤔
There are other ev’s that beat this car anyway 🤷♂️
@@TeslaPlaidChannelpeople don't get that. The ice cars that can beat a Tesla or lucid are purpose built for one thing and one thing only. They surely can't be used as an everyday car. They are a one trick pony.
It was nice to see the Mustang and the Camaro. Beat those two robotic pieces of $hit!!!!!!!
We also enjoyed watching this same Tesla beat the COPO half a dozen times now. Seems that one of these cars is reliable at the starting line, the other one has had all kinds of problems (misfires, traction, suspension, etc) 😃
That Tesla is fast but there’s no skill for that it’s like just press it and go if you win you win if you lose you lose not much you can change.
And yet we holeshot *faster* cars all the time, 3 in a row here, including a 0.000 Reaction Time against a faster car (foxbody mustang): czcams.com/video/rNBlgvR1R8o/video.html
(How many 0.000s have you got? 🤔)
Modified plaid getting whooped by the sapphire
We’ve raced 4 times: Plaid won 3, by more than four car lengths each time 👍 (the sole Sapphire victory was a close finish where it barely caught the Plaid at the end)
The Plaid is hardly modified. The backseats removed account for roughly a.1 advantage on the strip. Also 1234hp/1400tq vs 1020hp/1050tq. What are you expecting to happen?
@@user-zf1ol7op7y 👍 Absolutely correct. Best case across over 900 runs (more than 400 both before and after) shows a 0.11 second difference under the most rare perfect conditions 😃
@@TeslaPlaidChannelshow us an 8.99 with your modified plaid
@@user-zf1ol7op7yit’s not stock like the sapphire
I'll take that chevelle any day
👍It’s a beauty for sure. Not reliably fast, and we’ve never seen it go 9s, but it’s still beautiful 😃
I prefer a V8 with a 3rd pedal 6 speed manual transmission, and aside of the V8 being easier to repair an less costly, and considering I seen Tesla after 2 years needing 2 Battery Packs, and if you have a Hyundia or any other brand EV' If Damaged they're not like Tesla, which has qualified tech repairers to remove only bad cells. as apposed to Hyundia ( 2 Videos on a $44,000 USA replacement due to cost of its labor.
👨🏻👍🏻🏎🏁🚩🌲⛰... Also, should talk about the End Life of a 30 year Engine and how easy it is to Recycle a Petrol (gasoline ) engine... as apposed to how Toxic Electric Vehicles ( EV's ) are at it's End Life after 2 to 5 years or 1 week during collision, and storing in Unpaved Junkyards. They leak an Orange Brownish Gel and in unpaved Junkyards the Corrosive Acidic Gel seeps into our Ground Water... In the United States there are only 4 Recycling Facilities, and None are in the State of California.. The one state that wants to kill you. Speaking of which, imagine this. You or your children are stuck in traffic inside a Tunnel 2 to 5 miles away and all vehicles are stopped and they're all EV's. Thermo runoff occurs... even if your able to get out you'll suffocate with the toxic fumes. There's an Uber driver of a 2 year old Tesla, and he had 2 battery rep[lacements. You could try to bribe me by giving me a $3.5 million Rimac Hyper Car and add $1 million Cash USA I still will not Buy or Promote it... I don't want to contribute to our end 👨🏻👍🏻🏎🏁🚩🌲⛰ Petrol for ever. I highly recommend staying away from Turbos too
We enjoyed building our Camaros and our Nitrous foxbody (5-speed). 👍Nothing like the satisfaction of swapping a camshaft and testing the results. That was 40 years ago starting at 15 years old. We don’t spend every weekend fixing broken parts anymore.
The rest of your Comment is pure FUD. Not accurate whatsoever. How much did it cost that owner to replace their battery “twice in two years”??? Baloney. All EVs sold in the US have 8-year/150,000 mile battery warranties. Few new car buyers keep their new cars that long. If they could afford a new car 8 years ago, chances are they buy something newer again because they like the latest designs, new tech, performance, etc.
Like us. We’ve owned SIX Teslas now. One of them had a warning light appear on a Saturday night. On Monday it went into service. On Tuesday we picked it up, and they told us it had a “pack fault” so they replaced the whole battery pack. $0. Just like everything else under warranty (4-years bumper to bumper plus 8years/150k for battery).
We’ve made almost 2000 dragstrip passes: $40 in maintenance for the first 1400 runs (wiper blades). Then $800 for a set of brake pads. No oil changes, no tune ups, no broken parts. We know from first hand experience that racing a gas car is like throwing money into a hole in the ground, as *any honest racer* will admit. You’ve never raced an EV, and your Comment does not appear to have been written by one of those 😃
