  • What is stealing? And when is it okey to steal ideas? In this video I talk about how to steal as part of your creativity whilst making a wooden vase.

    4:34 I have done this! It’s terrifying! I figured out that it’s usually somewhere around the end grain transitioning to edge grain and you can change direction/take smaller lighter passes and get through it. But when you know that’s the transition point where the bits grab it helps you be ready. Also a spiral flush trim bit vs. a straight trim bit is a must. Great video!

      I have one of those long flush-trim bits and I haven't used it yet, this video hasn't exactly "inspired " me !! 😮

    Grain direction when you are using a router matters! 😉

    When flushing thick projects, use a bit with the bearing at the top, ( bottom on router table) trim to half way up and flip to use already trimmed as template...Safer, I also learnt this lesson the hard way :)

    Your absolutely right about stealing idea, when I was at design school they pretty much teach you this. Design boards are just that, a collection of idea from influences. Starting with existing designs and then influencing those existing designs with other inspirations like nature or art to change the design to something new (maybe even better than the original) another factor to this, is CZcams. If you put an idea on here then it is up for grabs. You are essentially giving your idea over to the world.

    Well the block of wood with a hole for a test tube has been around since the seventies. Way back then I was a florist (yes I’m much older than you) I would add a sweet stem of daisy mums and a piece of fern for greenery. I believe they came from a woodworker in California. They were a lot more expensive than a plain bud vase. Bud the real gift was that beautiful vase. American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch: “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. As an artist myself, I’m not going to work in a media that doesn’t bring me happiness when I work with it, but I certainly can learn from others. Sometimes mine are much better, and sometimes I look for a way to make it better.

    Love the video Pierre! We all steal ideas from others, I’ve definitely done it haha and you’re right there’s a fine line, be inspired by many and not just rip an entire idea from one, make several ideas become your own. Have you tried using a guide pin on your router table mate, that’ll really help with kick back, you can steal that idea if you like 😜

    • @TheSwedishMaker
      @TheSwedishMaker  Před rokem

      Its quite stable. There's quite a big flat surface at the bottom. But adding a base would also work I think.
