  • Two acknowledged giants of our national pastime are being inducted this week into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.: Bud Fowler, the first African-American player in professional baseball beginning in the 1870s; and John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil Jr., a Negro Leagues player and manager who later scouted and coached in the majors, and co-founded the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. Correspondent Mark Whitaker reports on two legends being entered into the temple of baseball.

Buck O'Neill was such a great player and human being. I first heard of Buck was thru Ken Burns Baseball and he was the whole show in my opinion. RIP Mr. O'Neill

I met Mr O’Neil at a baseball card show and got him to sign his book - fantastic man who was very humble and super nice. He asked me about my life and where I was from. Truly a class act.

I visited the HOF in 2009 for three whole days and still couldn't see everything. The immensity of artifacts and history are overwhelming in a good way.

How did they not put him in 2006 when they had him induct the other inductees (that had all passed) the HOF for baseball should be ashamed of themselves for that! Congratulations for getting in now and all the other inductees

Buck O'Neil. Watch Ken Burns' documentary "Baseball", the book "The Soul of Baseball" and his autobiography "I Was Right on Time". You'll finish with a smile on your face.

I love baseball and I love this story. Very heartwarming. It’s about time Cooperstown play all nine endings on a level playing field. A great day in baseball. God bless these old timers and God bless baseball.

If you watch Ken Burn’s BASEBALL documentary, they talk about Fowler & how the owners decided to block black players. The Hall is slow to do the right thing but they are getting there.

I knew of Buck O'Neill for many years, but didn't know much about him. But the Ken Burns documentary allowed me - and all of America - to get to know what a great player he was and what an even better man. I was heartbroken when he was passed over in 2006, and it still breaks my heart that he did not live to see his induction in the Hall of Fame.

Buck O'Neil was one of the kindest, most humble Christian man that anyone could know. I'm glad he could look on from above and see his induction. To say it was long overdue is the understatement of the century.

If he ain't in heaven no one is. To be so void of bitterness considering the circumstances in which he was born is a testament to how good Buck was. Anyone would be rightfully perturbed at their rotten luck but not Buck. We should all learn from his example.

Was this a case of it was too embarrassing to put him in all these many years because of having not already done this when he was still alive? Maybe. But either way, he was already inducted in the court of public opinion. He was a Hall of Famer whether he was actually inducted or not.
Glad they finally got it done, though, maybe this way a whole other generation of youngsters get to find out about him and his service to the game.

Buck should’ve been the first black to manage in the Major Leagues. In the early 1960’s the Cubs implemented their infamous College of Coaches scheme of rotating managers O’Neill was not one of them. In my opinion he should’ve been given the chance. He couldn’t of done any worse than those who did the rotating management.
