HOW I Quit My Job & Became a FARMER in Rural Thailand 🇹🇭

- It is time to share how I quit my job to become a farmer in rural Thailand.
Becoming a farmer in Thailand may sound idyllic to some, but it's hard work in high temperatures for little financial gain.
I had a good job back in the UK that paid well.
So why did I choose to leave it & move out to lead a farmer's life in Thailand?
Well, it has to do with the quality of life & being close to nature, not just close, but working with nature, the land & the seasons.
I know most people quit their jobs & move to Thailand for other reasons, but becoming a farmer in Thailand ticked all the boxes for me.
Fortunately, my wife, Toon, shares the same passion for growing things, although our opinions on how best to do it often differ.

64 the other day and realised that having the house, the car, the job and all those trappings mean nothing when compared to a partner who also feels incomplete if you are not together. I now live in a "Shotgun Shack", with very few trappings, and very little juke box money, with a 54 year old woman who makes me feel like a film star, when in fact my face, would be more suitable for radio. Happy Farang right here!
Love your commentary Leigh. Keep up the good work!!
Love your comment Ted. Thanks for taking the time to post it 👍
I'm 26 and realize I cannot conform to the way of life in usa. I hope to move to thailand and live a simple life.thanks for sharing your journey!
Great to hear from you Kassandra.
Our way of life isn't for most people. But I reckon it is for a growing number of us 👍
22 from the usa and feel the same way. I love Thailand and hope to move there and get involved in alternative agriculture
@@hopepeterson742 its an amazing opportunity & its been a real 'eye-opener' for Toon & myself.
Absolutely fascinating journey. Stories like yours only confirm my decision to retire in Thailand. I hope to someday meet you and Toon. Thank you. All the best. Mitch 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for that MM, we look forward to it to 👍
Yes Leigh , you’re a delegated follower of fashion , I haven’t told you this before but you have been my inspiration to be that man about town look. Some people even throw money at me . I had an 8 year relationship with my wife when I was living in the Uk and she was living in Vietnam . I’ve been living in Vietnam for seven years now , have a Beautiful little girl of three years . Life couldn’t be better . Compare this to west London there’s just no comparison . I would rather be a poor man living in Vietnam , than a rich man living in London .
Perfectly put Jeff.
Vietnam was on my to-do-list, but once I met Toon the list got scrapped.
Sounds like you've got your own little slice of heaven buddy.
Thank you for sharing your story. I love you and Toon, I can't wait to meet both of you.
Thank you Denise 👍
I had been wondering how you transitioned from uk to a farm in Thailand so looked back and found this very informative and as always honest great stuff leigh shows how life changes for us all
You Leigh are a Good humoured Person love you and Toons Blogs Great stories good laugh thanks for the smiles ! Your a lucky Man to find your Place in life whilst still young enough to enjoy your labour respect you And Wayne heaps 2 funny bloggers worth the watch ! Stay healthy All love life we only get 1 chance take a page from Leigh’s look on life Takecare Everyone
Thanks for that BG, great comment 👍
Hi. I enjoyed listening to you about your past work history . I was from the print myself back in the eighties I worked for news International for the Sun and News of the world and ended up on the picket line at Wapping lol. I wasn't a printer I was a fitter/machinist for maintenance on the printing presses. When the strike ended I ended up being a cab driver for two years and had enough of that and went to Thailand back in 2007 and that's it.
Small world Dermot.
I had a few plays on the presses & plate-making but much preferred the arty-farty stuff.
One heck of a trade back in the day . . . I just joined it 20 years too late to make the serious money in London.
Well. being a union official didn't help me really lol. I was black listed from other jobs in those days.@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand
Nice little video Leigh, ever thought about health and safety courses in Thialand , maybe not ,the Labourers were digging the footings for the house in bare feet , amazing, nothing wrong with going down a hole with breathing gear , I love it and so does my Mrs , LOL
Can't believe that I phrased it like that . . . Hey-ho lol.
wow - what a heart felt post, thank you so much - toon looks good hope she is coming right! will be in thailand with my son just after xmas would love to drop in and say hi and have a beer or three.
Sounds great Derek, you're more than welcome.
The house in the village will definitely be up & running by then if you want to stay over.
Cheers Leigh.
Hi just found this great to see how your land has changed, bet you look back as well. Good on you mate . 🍷🍺
Life is a journey ! You are having a great journey. It’s just the beginning..
stay safe, and stay blessed !
Cheers,
Enjoyed the story and views around the farm. Thanks
Thanks Don C 👍
Thanks for sharing your story Leigh. It looks like you made the right choices and are happy despite the struggles.
Thanks Mark, I'm finding that stress on the body is easier to handle than stress in the brain. I might change my opinion when I'm in my 70s though lol.
This is the first of your videos I have seen. I think it is great. I love the way you have told your life story. I live in Thailand and love it! (I am from the USA.) My girlfriend is from Petchabun and our plan is to have a small farm there when I retire. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you
Great to hear that you've found our channel thanks Jay.
It's not as easy as many people think to get discovered here on CZcams.
We've not uploaded a video for a few days due to Toon being ill. She's on the up now so we'll be dusting down the camera later today.
We wish you the best of luck with your plans for the future having a go at farming here in Thailand. It's flipping hard graft, but to us, a lovely way of life.
Cheers Leigh & Toon.
Interesting thanks Leigh. Best wishes from us over in Klang Dong.
Cheers Chris.
Thanks leigh for your story it is great you and Toon are still being good to each other, the dream goes on and on. Steve in thayang Phetchaburi.
We've had our ups & downs over the years Steve, the same as every couple, but there's never been a doubt about the dream & working/living it together.
Cheers bud.
Just found your video. Where are you? Planning move with my Thai wife Thanya ... from Udon.
Agree with everything you say. Would love to stay.
Great walk around and a chat mate,, and yes will see you and Toon sometime soon..
Look forward to seeing you guys . . . Guaranteed laugh that'd be 👍
.....a year or so later , catching up on Toon and Leigh your epic journey through the years , and quite an adventure to end up in rags as a hobo on the land in what was once the Far East...I must say your hobo gig would appear to be the best adventure of them all and as the days progress you ranch is also progressing , and all without goating around , I envy your riches to rags to even greater richness , carry on farming
I was born and bred in South west London. Had a Thursday, friday Night job at Tescos and a saturday job at Dixons. Left home at 15 and Joined the Army (9th Airborne Engineers) doing an engineering course. Signed up for 22 but unfortunately smashed my leg in a jump.
Had my Engineering BSC in my pocket but got the army to pay for courses before I was medically discharged.
Before Id even been discharged I was offered the job at MOD in london running their energy center.
Lots of confined work. Certificated to Audit level.
About that time there were a lot of deaths from workers going down the sewers of London.
I suddenly get a call from Thames water ( apparently I was referred by a training instructor) to come and set up their confined space rescue team.
I had a 1million budget and built to trucks that im still proud of now.
Ran that team. trained the trainers and decided Id had enough of London traffic.
So I buggered off to Kazakhstan in oil and Gas.
Seriously enhanced Risk assessment for every confined space entry.
Welders were regularly blowing themselves up.
Bear in mind. Contractors were Italian. Staff were 3rd world.
My Italian boss would walk out every day and fire someone. Not his staff just some poor lad who might have been walking past.
So jacked that and went back to the Uk.
One month later I was in Ryad Saudi. Running the Princess noora energy center. 25 million sq meter university.
Had its own Metro. Contractors lost the contract so back to Bahrain ( I lived there) A month later I was contracted to Doha Qatar for the Aspire Zone. Finished that and achieved al Qatar Civil Defense approval for what is a massive sporting complex. ( Back to Bahrain).
Call from the Burj khalifa. Come. So I came. This is where I am now.
So I met my Filipina in Ryad and she's sitting opposite me now.
So a similar path.
I have to leave the Philippines for a trip every year.
Ill bring my little lady and would love to come and say hi.
All the very best.
Murph
Wow that's a great story Murph. Would be great to meet up. Talk of risk assessments is strictly forbidden on the farm thought lol.
Leigh & Toon.
Wow Leigh what an honest and great video fair play i admire you.Its may 11th today if i get the chance id love to pop over to spend a couple of days with you on the farm.lets see how long this lockdown last.I live in Thaphan- hin in Phichit so not far away.Best wishes and stay safe to you and the mrs.from Chris and Tip carre

Watched a couple of videos from you guys now. Interesting to watch homesteading (if you will) from other places across the world. Best wishes from the Appalachian mountains in the Eastern US.
Great to hear from you C103. We're still very new to this lifestyle but enjoying the learning process.
Cheers Leigh & Toon.
excellent, life is a journey, just enjoy the trip
Absolutely! That's very true Philip.
I had a first job just like yours, designing a magazine. We had to re-shoot all the photos in the darkroom with a screen. It was the same time Apples came out, it was great after that. Just worked 11 days a month during production.
G'day guys how funny i was about to ask you how it started and it was the next video off the reel. That was a great story mate sounds like you had a blast. Great stuff.
I to left school early & started working at my Dads Panel Beating business, to become a qualified Panel Beater for 13yrs, then moved on to building highrises and became a qualified Carpenter for 8 odd yrs. I've worked hard my whole life manual labour great at improvising & using my hands making really good money. But i decided to take the pay cut and take a less strenuous approach less laboursome job & less toll on the body, so right now at 43 i'm drive a forklift in a timber yard.
I've had all the goodies like race cars i built, boats, jet skis, travelled over the globe, a house and most of all a beautiful daughter to a Thai lady i was with for 10yrs but things became very toxic and i Had to leave.
She kept me from seeing or talking to my daughter for 5-7yrs. I was felling down i knew what i had to do, move on. So i travelled to find myself and happiness again, thats when i met my wife. Now its all about me and my wife, she's from the Philippines.
She was due to come to Australia in march 2020 and bang cv19 hit lockdown. I haven't seen her for almost 2yrs ( sept 2019 to be exact) but things are still great we talk 2-3 times a day and always message each other ( thank god for technology ).
We are working on visas at this very moment, Soon she'll be here hopefully by August September. My plan is to retire and get up and outta here round about 50 like yourself. First i must finish paying the house off in about another 8-10yrs, so i can rent or sell it later. She'll be here living with me until thats done & experience a bit of my culture then we will just enjoy life in the Philippines retired with only the simple things in life and happiness.
I do just now in the last 2yrs get to spend time with my daughter she's 14 love her so so much she is my world ( and my wife lol you know what i mean). And in 10yrs time she'll be well grown up and living her own life, i told her she can rent my house or buy it (at Dad's rates/price of corse ) i'will help her out.
Sorry for the blah blah blah story take what ever life deals us and carry on be strong and believe dreams can come true.
If you read all this wow thank you always take both of you.
thanks for the video mate appreciated, take care
mate..i drifted onto your channel about your lakes..just watched this..and wow interesting outlook..brill
Glad to see you drifted our way redzed 👍
Bravo apprentice soothsayer. For me, life is all about risk - probability v impact. Once I understand what I have is in the top right hand corner I have the ability or choice of moving it to the bottom left hand corner - sabai sabai
Is it the top right that we gaze into when we're imagining?
If so, that's why I have a crick in my neck ☝
I would think you could get seasonal work teaching your old skills to the foreign embassies in Bangkok. Spend six to eight weeks going from embassy to embassy. I'm retired from all hazards fire and rescue because I broke my back, got better, broke it again and couldn't walk. So I was forced to retire at 55.
I did look into it years ago before making the move over. There were a few opportunities but I really needed to get out of it.
Get a pair of flip-flops on & do what we'd dreamed of for so many years.
Honestly David, neither of us have it in us to chase coin anymore.
Thanks liegh great story, I like what you and toon have done. One day I hope to meet the two of you. Cheers
Cheers Lester, that would be fab matey 👍
Great reflection on what’s important in ones life....death of a parent does change ones perspective and I guess it’s supposed to...that final lesson from parent to offspring...to be sure to have a good life with no real regrets....your job journey was crazy...another reflection to realize the luck of the draw can be a good thing sometimes....good advice on forgetting the previous chapter in life and embracing the new one....
Loved your comments thank you Craig. Much appreciated this end.
Well, that was quite the story there Leigh..... it filled in pretty much every question I had and more!!!! I have to say that somehow my respect level went even higher for you after hearing "The Life Of Leigh". I still think you're a tad off living in the middle of nowhere, but it obviously helps that you have an awesome woman at your side. Let's just hope you manage to sell the house and then buy the big Toyota!! : )
Cheers Dave.
Problem is I'd set off to go to the Toyota garage, then get sidetracked by the Kubota showroom & come back with a new tractor 😉
Like the honesty in your story. Not very often you hear telling it like it is! (no pun intended, just like the honesty)
Very kind of you to write that HD, thanks for posting. Leigh.
Interesting Leigh, Life is what you make of it, you could go back and do a few courses to bring your goals closer. In truth your the one learning now, through real life.
Flippin right Johnny.
I have never ever learned as in much as in these last 18 months. Not just on the farming side of things, but like you say, through real life.
Cheers Leigh.

I don't know what we'd do without our Ben Hurr chariot.
great story well told.....and one which i can relate to as i sit here in Jakarta on another short work trip which includes delivering training with interpreters! Luckily though i've got all the kit and the interpreters are brilliant :) Back to Thailand next week
It's well worth it though Jonathan, right?
Although I had a good boss/mate, sourcing kit was always a struggle on foreign trips.
The other hurdle was tipping up to deliver a course only to find out on the day it was for another subject . . . strangely they often turned out to be even more enjoyable.
What courses are you delivering? (I sometimes miss the banter with the delegates.)
Cheers Leigh.
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand I've worked on overseas development projects for the last 35 years - so learned how to adapt quickly! For the last two years i've been working primarily with an Australian government funded project that supports reforms in the Indonesian justice system - mainly to address unequal access to justice, corruption, and prison overcrowding. My job is primarily supporting the project team and Indonesian partner organisations to monitor and evaluate their progress, learn about what is working and what is not, and improve forward plans. Great team of dedicated people ...trying to make a positive difference. Still enjoy the work - but now enjoy being at home and in the garden even more :) Hope to come and visit you guys one day - and if you ever visit Hua Hin you are very welcome to come and visit us

Look forward to hearing more if we get to meet up in the future.
Great story. Moral of the story imo is Money isn't everything and it's better to have you little piece of happiness with the one you love then working a ton running ya ragged. Even if accommodations, food, and expenses paid....is it really worth it ? Probably not.
Hopefully we meet one day. I also have a thyroid condition like Tune and it's always great exchanging stories of kindred spirits.
I enjoyed the story, you have lived a interesting life mate
Thank you Raymond, hopefully, my best chapters are still to come matey.
Respect.
I have knowingly faced bear, packs of dogs, large snakes, fires, explosive atmospheres, floods, armed men with clubs, knives, swords, spears, firearms, what the world calls "bravery" and "courage". Giving up the United Kingdom and going off to Thailand in a totally different culture to start life over as a farmer, that, to me, is bravery and courage. You are a hero!
I don't know about it being brave David. Your tales would have had me cacking my pants!!!!
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand no. Most we control. Even in confined space rescue. Paying the bills each month, as a farmer, in Thailand as a farang, that's guts.
Enjoyed your history of work sorry to hear bout Toons dad how did you meet?

Renting out the house to subscribers is a brilliant idea . I would be up to helping around the farm as would Ian .
Ha Ha, maybe should have done a risk assessment on the canal bank ascent. lol. Great vlog. My old man was in the printing business all his life. Started on the shop floor and finished as an MD.
It was one hell of a trade Carl.
MDs that come from the shop floor often make the best MDs from what I have seen.
Years with hands on the tools experience counts for so much, & much young management, that comes straight from the college of knowledge, can't even relate or communicate with a skilled/experienced workforce. Bad work/man management is rife in many industries. It's what pissed me off the most carrying out audits.
I missed the print's big bucks by about 15-20 years, but I feel lucky to of been a part of it when it first went digital.
What I loved most was sitting next to the senior editors & putting their front covers together in front of them with their input. . . now that was a buzz. Most found it a bit stressy, but I never understood or felt that.
Risk Assessments . . . reading some peoples efforts was often hilarious & a good source of a difference of opinion.
I'd love to do an off-the-wall funny risk assessment video but I fear no one would press play LOL.
Cheers Leigh.
It was great to hear your life story your struggle I thorough enjoyed it, and to think it is not not over yet, there is more blah de blah work on the farm to do. Take Care and hopefully I will meet up one day in Kampang Phet
Happy to have found your vlog! 😊👍🏼
Great video , got your priorities right mate .
really enjoyed this one day ill roll up and come there feel like home already lol
Beep the horn a few times in case we are down the far end of the farm Raymond!
Don't worry about the dogs, they're useless, they won't bite you while you are waiting.
Very cool. I never knew you were safety guy. Interesting life story. Maybe someday we can come out and visit....or even do a house swap...we always wanted to vacation in Thailand..😃🌈🤙
Thanks Thomas. You're very welcome to visit us once the world has recovered from the virus 😉
Curious...with all those graphics skills in ur background....were you ever tempted to make your thumbnails on this channel more explosive so to speak...or did you find that the block text is what people like..I only ask as I thought of starting a channel when we move back next year and initially assumed I’d need a really smashing thumbnails to get it going....did you do any research on that?
Nice Story mate. Could you imagine my story lol. It would go on for months.
You couldn't let on that it was all facts because no one would believe you lol.
How much was you looking for for the house 😊
Hi Leigh, thanks for the reply on other video..
It's funny as I said I left School and did a diploma in agriculture land management and animal welfare.
4 years all in...
Then I decided to work in the oil and gas industry, as a LEEA engineer and instructor..also working at height etc for Chevron world wide...
Now I want to stay here and farm..would I be wasting my time and monies?
Thanks and enjoy the channel
I can't answer that for you matey lol.
What I can say is that it's the happiest we have ever been in both of our lives. The work is physically harder than any other job I have done but it's also the least stressful. We try hard to keep our overheads to a minimum & now after 3 years of learning from mistakes we're doing fine....BUT our fine maybe not so fine for others.
Hi, just discovered your video and will look through them all, as they are so interesting and enjoyable to watch. Can I ask what age did you make the decision to make the final move over to Thailand?
Nice to hear from you Neal.
I was 46 when I eventually left for Thailand,
but I made the decision to leave way, way before that though.
Cheers Leigh.
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand Hi Leigh, thanks for the reply and what you seem to be doing is great and your positive attitude towards everything is inspiring. I haven`t made a final decision yet, with regard to location and timing, as have had a few setbacks this year. I am from a similar background in safety and training, but Brexit seems to be having a knock-on effect everywhere. How is the exchange rate affecting things at present? I hope your wife Toon is responding well to her treatment and positive thoughts for her. ATB Neal
Toon's recent second blood test results were very good. Her medication has been reduced & the next test isn't for another 3 months.
Exchange rate is a horrible joke these days. As things become more expensive here in Thailand, the exchange rate just compounds it.
We've cut our cloth accordingly & made a few changes but we'll be fine when we start cropping our longterm main crops 😉
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand That`s great news about your wife and long may that continue. The exchange rate is a big issue for me as I`m sure it is for many people living there on pensions or savings, hopefully, things will improve in time. ATB
Great idea about the house
Thanks Gary, the old poultry shed is already out & being turned into a goat house on the farm.
Next comes the big clean up in the village house 😲
Very enjoyable cheers mate
Thanks JM, appreciated muchly.
life in rural place is quite pleasant.
I very much agree with you on that 😉
i can remember doing my confined spaces courses so i could do drainage work and the like, use to fart in the gas meter to make the alarm go off then run around screaming GAS GAS GAS as soon as i was back on site the next day to announce that i had passed!
Mana Mana, do you like salad cream? Loving your work
Mana doesn't have time to feed 😉
Now that’s funny
Looks like you made the right decision but you didn't know that at the time

did you tell her indoors about the mushrooms?and is there a video of her first seeing them?
I forgot Raymond LOL.
We were right near them today planting bamboo along the ditch behind.
I'll take her tomorrow, holding hands, the full works.
who said romance was dead and buried
Interesting vlog.
Nice one FFF 👍
How much did you want for the house
Hi Mark we're willing to accept 650k Thai baht.
We've dropped the price twice since putting it up for sale, but can't go any lower because of the farmstay revenue it generates us.
you have a lot of Eucalypts(Gum Trees) growing along the roadside . I shall send over some Koalas for you .
Are they good for egg laying?
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand nah drop bear aren't as friendly as they look.
Great story, you might consider buying a Robin instead of another Honda.
15 years and still going !
Never heard of them Stephen, what country is the company?
I'm super happy with our Honda but always interested in power tools 😉
@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand
I don't know country of manufacture and I'm here on my own today, they've all gone to a wedding but you can find them for sale in Khampeang Phet at various suppliers.
Ask Toon she probably knows, if not other locals know.
I can see the satisfaction in the almost self sufficient lifestyle and lack of boring daily responsibilities required just to earn a living in the western World. But as a foreigner in Thailand you'll have to sell a lot of fish / bamboo etc. to cover the cost of visa requirements & health insurance.
B2 million for 6 months of cancer treatment in a decent Pattaya hospital ( treatment that will end as soon as the money dries up cure or no cure )
You make some good points Regor.
My visa renewal comes in at just 1,900tbh for 12 months, so apart from the required funds that need to be deposited in a Thai bank account, that's cheap enough.
We have a small flat that we rent out back in the UK, combined with the little bit off CZcams, Patreon, & grafting our nuts off, we're OK.
Our farm is still just a baby (18 months old) and our bulk crops of bamboo, eucalyptus & palm aren't mature yet. Over time we'll become much better farmers, the farm soil & the produce will improve greatly. We are learning so much, I have zero doubt in my mind about it doing well.
We still have a further 10 rai to develop.
Fishing & farmstays in the future should also help.
Health-wise is always a concern after seeing both of my parents suffer at the hands of the 'free' NHS back in the UK.
We lead such a more healthy lifestyle here on the farm, but if the dreaded C shows up we'll do everything that's necessary to try & kick it's arse 👊
Cheers Leigh.
Thanks for the time taken and the thought in your reply. Good luck, I hope this venture proves to be successful and satisfying, which is something many don't achieve in life, even with wealth. Sadly my own farming instincts must come 2nd. to a need to educate and provide for 4 children, which to a decent standard is too expensive outside of the U.K. E. U. where despite the exceptions that you have experienced medical care is, on the whole, free and good, or it has been in my own experience.
Would a goat or two get rid of your weeds ?
I certainly hope so Phil because the goat house build starts today . . . Honestly it is. You must of picked up on our thoughts 😉
it's your calling
Very well put thanks 👌
Toon dont care how long your "bamboo" is...quit measuring it!
Lol
Best video so far well-done (sticks in my throat to say that right enough )
Ginger Troll
That's only because I mentioned Scotland for you, ya soppy tart 😅
Oh BIG thanks btw 👍
Leigh, thanks for the backstory as I had always wondered and now I know. I had to laugh when you mentioned managers asking high level questions during your training courses, and it reminded me of a story told by Jerry Clower “The Mouth of the South”...give it a listen and you might get a chuckle. Again, I loved the video. 👍🏻
czcams.com/video/Frurwt75GBU/video.html
Thanks for that David, I'll give it a listen later tonight when Toon is watching her crappy Thai TV program.
Cheers Leigh.
So... you are saying that you didn’t become a farmer in Thailand for fame and fortune? My illusions (delusions) of becoming a farmer in Thailand are shattered! Thanks for destroying my dreams! 😆.
The digital revolution changed everything in print, I used to sell my photos and make a bit of extra money doing it, the publisher always required a negative of the picture and you had to know a bit about what you were doing to get good consistent photos and the proper equipment was expensive, now everyone has a camera and with photoshop they can make them damn near perfect. Oh well, I have learned to embrace the technology and watch silly people make videos to put online. Thanks for sharing your story. Many blessings to you and Toon🙏
Cheers 🍻
Couldn't agree with you more.
The old skill sets have been replaced by new ones.
Even an average looking photo can be transformed into something special these days.
Developing & fixing photos in darkrooms & the smell of opening a box of new light sensitive film will soon be lost for ever 😢
I dont think you quit your job! You just moved on!
Should had farm in your own country...
That idea didn't appeal to me at all Linda. We're coming up to being on the farm full-time 3 years this January. I can honestly say that I've never been happier in my life. To feel free of stress (apart from on the body) is something that I hold very dear.
This time next year we hope to increase our goat herd to over 100 strong & the, now enlarged, lake fully stocked & open for fishing.
Doing this in flip-flops is the real bonus 😉
