  • In this video I demonstrate how to fix damaged pipe threads and create a leak-free seal.
In this video I used hemp fiber thread sealant which is not commonly available in the USA. Spool wick and ordinary pipe dope may be used as an alternative if you can't find the hemp fiber thread sealant. The process is exactly the same.
    Spool wick:

Loctite 55 may also be used, and it does not require any dope or paste.

This is a great video and thank you very much.
I have a situation where a thread is damaged but it's for car oil pan where it will get extremely hot. Does anyone have a recommendation on what to use as a replacement to hemp fiber?

I would recommend using a "piggyback" drain plug, it is a larger diameter drain plug that can seal the damaged threads and there is a smaller plug inside that you use to drain the oil.

When you heat the fitting for removal, does it burn off the hemp fibers?

Yes it does, which is why it's important to wear protective gear or work in a well-ventilated area. Alternatively, you can also try using penetrating fluid. Generally you'll only encounter stuck threads when working with older iron plumbing.

It is not the exact same product, but you can use spool wick (www.supplyhouse.com/Wal-rich-1906004-Spool-Wick) and Hercules block (www.supplyhouse.com/Hercules-15703-1-4-pt-Block-screw-cap-with-brush) to achieve the same results.

Why not just get a new pipe for less money?

It's often difficult to replace the entire pipe if it is installed in a confined space.

Most people would just use several wraps of teflon tape, same end result!

I have found that using hemp fiber or wicking and jointing compound works to seal damaged threads that Teflon tape can't seal. However, for minor damage, you're correct that usually Teflon tape and some thread sealant on top will fix it.
