10 things I HATE about my BMW M135i (M140i M235i M240i 1 series, 2 series)

  • I love my BMW's, especially the M135i & M140i Hot hatch. Like all great things they do have their faults, I wanted to talk about my main gripes with the BMW 1 & 2 series cars.
    As I mentioned in the video, these are my opinion, I totally understand people who like the M performance stuff, or keeping their badging on, I don't mean to upset anyone!

    1. Paint Quality - sucks around edges.
    2. Lack of paint colours
    3. Wheels, lack of options, too small.
    4. M Badging. Placement on LCI
    5. Crappy standard sound and dummy panels
    6. Small Petrol tank
    7. Lack of Head-up Display
    8. Tyre options, no space saver
    9. No Limited Slip Diff standard factory option
    10. Seating position (3-door)
    You're welcome.

      X1 e84 with full options - turning the iDrive controller CW will zoom in (map module), turning CCW will zoom out.
      What really, really annoys me though is the function of the skip forward / backward buttons on BMW's multifunction steering wheels.
      When listening music while driving I always find myself skipping backwards …
      This strange logic continues in certain places throughout their iDrive system UI
      It would be really nice to provide more customizability with the entire iDrive system - programming functions and behaviors more individually. The way it is, everyone is pretty much locked into how BMW engineers feel it best.

      Rob Walker this used to but the fuck out of me, but instead of thinking of controlling the zoom with the knob, I know think about changing the distance scale on the map. Turn left to expand the scale, turn right to compress the scale.

    All valid points Joe. I had exactly the same problem on the front bumper wraparound with the paint flaking off. I spoke to original selling dealer and it went in to have it smart repaired. Looks perfect now.
    With regards to the seat height, I have electric memory seats (as two people drive it, each with their own key, etc.) and I don't think the seats go down as low on mine as the non-electric ones.
    I find wheel choice also very disappointing that they don't have a few options.

    I totally get what you mean with the M Sport badging. Fortunately for me I'm 20 years old (which I think is a factor) and I've got a 2015 120D M Sport (Facelifted update) and for me, I love the M Sport badging because it makes it look more like an M135i/M140i. I can imagine though if I was ever lucky enough to own an M140i in the future, I would be annoyed that my car looked so similar to the M Sport model. Love your videos btw. I'm forever hoping my paintwork remains in good condition!

    Pretty much agree with all points on your list here. Currently driving a 118d LCI in EstorilBlau and looking to upgrade to a M140i in GlacierSilber. I'm still on the brink about the badging on the back tho. I do agree that the placement is horrible, but on the other side, it's just so nice knowing there's a M140i badge on there. Another thing is that I've heard there will be a LCI2 coming around June/July for the 1 series. I wonder what that might be... New factory color option? I'd doubt they'd make a lot of cosmetic changes, seeing as to how big the change was with the first LCI compared to the pre-LCI 1 series. Any thoughts on the M Performance exhaust for the 135/140i? Is it worth the extra cost?

    Nice video, but I've got a question for you, the new M140i has just come about, and I'm considering one when I've finished my apprenticeship and can afford one (around 16-18 months time).
    What has been improved for the M140...and has the slight looseness and waywardness to the car at higher speeds been dealt with?
    I ask that because it will be going on some track days should I decide to buy one.

    Joe, If you have been to a BMW Plant tour, you will have been told or would have noticed that all BMW series cars go through the same paint process. There is no alternative routine; when looking at the production line you will see 3 series, 7 series etc all in randomised order. It is very impressive how each car comes together when there is a mix of car platforms. Anyway on point - the paint process is the same no matter which BMW car you buy (six steps IIRC). It may be down to the plastics (bumper trim) rather than the paint! But even then that would be a guess. I was in Regensburg and Dingofling as I have a M3 F80 on order. I highly recommend if you have not been.

    • @vampbl7291
      @vampbl7291 Před 7 lety

      that is good to know.. I was also wondering about it, I have an m235i and I did notice that the paint suffers more than the A200 that I had before. It could be just my perception about it though.

    @Omar-kw5ui Před 6 lety +3

    Interesting how you also had the same problem with the paint peeling off your 1 series front bumper. It happened to my 2015 model aswell about 1 week after delivery.
    I also don't like how the metal on the inside door panels has a huge gap to where it's attached (becareful because this can cut your hands).. this makes the fit and finish look so cheap and rushed. I have the HK sound system on mine, and the tweeters also have fit and finish quality issues where they are not mounted correctly leaving them leaning to one side with visible gaps between them and the door. I had thought to myself, if this is the case, then I would rather not tick that option and have a door card without the hole for them, but watching your video, I see that they just put a blank bit of plastic instead.. shame.
    one more thing I don't like is the high gloss finish around the door and mirrors. This stuff gets scratched soo easily just by driving around and should have no place on the exterior or even the interior (which they added on 2016 cars and on.
    My final problem that i've had is with the BMW badge at the back getting a coat of rust on it that develops from the windscreen fluid running down on it and freezing over it in winter time.
    Those are basically my little gripes with this car. Otherwise, its a great car.

  • @ilicilaurentiu
    @ilicilaurentiu Před 7 lety

    Hey!
    Just a few thoughts on what you said in the video (I'll number them according to your order).
    1) The paint quality you got it bang on. I have a 220i and I can see the same problem on my car. It's probably even worse here in Germany where you do 200 km/h quite often and small rocks pack a much bigger punch.
    3) My car is has the Melbourne Red and it looks fucking fantastic :). When I ordered the car I took the Moonlight Silver color which was supposed to be one of the 2 colors you could only get with the 2 series. I was fortunate to see the Melbourne Red on the street roughly 2 weeks after ordering the car and made the switch.
    4) The badges are probably bad because most people (at least in Germany) just opt to "delete" them :).
    5) HK box is a must in my opinion. I think out of all the options I got that's by far the best one.
    I few faults I found with the 220i are:
    1) The quality of my brakes. They're braking fine enough for the way I drive, but they tend to wear down quickly "due to rust and the aggressive substances used by car wash companies" (qoute from BMW). I've done 38k km in just about 2 years and I've had to completely change them (brake pads + brake discs, front and back for 1181 Euro). By comparison my former shitty Peugeot 206 has the original brake disks after 8 years and 170k km by comparison (it only ever needed changing the pads every 50k or so km).
    2) The seat sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. It probably happened only ~5 times since I got the car that I got the seat forwards to let a passenger in the back and then it didn't come back to its original position. I am not sure if I was doing something wrong or the seat was.
    3) The rear parking sensors don't work well enough. I managed to brush against another guys car because I leaned on them too much. I was backing up the there was just enough space for the cars to slightly brush against each other (not really hit one another). The sensor went into crazy mode once I touched the other car, but did nothing beforehand. There was no damage at all except for a very small scratch on my paint and absolutely nothing for the other guy.
    Other than that, all fine.
    Cheers,
    Lau

    @troelens Před 7 lety

    Great video Joe! You didn't mention the quality of the leather as Nick Murray often says. I find the leather/leatherette much harder than in an Audi for instance and the price is the same. Another negative point is the instrument cluster, the standard digital computer screen is so bad (tiny and ugly), the optional one is better but way too low. If you put the wheel too high you cant read all of the navi information. HUD would fix this, or just putting it in the middle like other brands do.

    Completely agree with the lack of rim options and I also don't like all the M badges all over. I see that many car companies are mounting smaller fuel tanks in there cars today and I understand why but as a car buyer who drives a lot I really don't like to refuel it all the time. Personally I have a problem generally with the use of blue color that is used in most BMW's of late when one chooses the M sport package or M parts. A black, red or grey car with black seats and m sport package and now you have blue here and there including the blue break calibers - They should be red - just my opinion-:)

    +1 on Pretty much everything.
    got the 2012 version and it also suffers from a bad paint job...
    next, like you, I absolutely want a real HUD like in the 4-series. it seems the space is there...
    i don't want one from the higher series as I love the compactness, but the lack of features is really disturbing, especially with cars like the a45 that offer more in some compartments.
    it'd be better to change the tire size to a size way more common on the market ; neither the 18" nor the 19" got a good spread of usable sizes,especially when it comes to winter-usage.
    I had hoped the m140 would get the hud, but unfortunately not, the one you mentioned (aftermarket) just looks like child's play.
    I still have hope for 2017 when my next shall come and I love the m1xx. But those certain lacks (why can't I get the midnight blue? and the stop&go-function that even a flimsy a-series Mercedes has?)
    well, mourning on a high level, but m1xx is high level, or at least should be

    I agree with the paint, 3 days I had mine and the paint peeled by the bottom of the wheel arch. £30k should buy a decent finish. The other thing I don't like is when you are slowing down to a gentle stop the down change of the gears gives you a gentle thrust forwards and wheel you ease of the brakes to make the stop pleasant for passengers the engine starts again.

    I have just ordered a 120d Sport auto after deliberating over a 125d. What annoys me most about the 1 series is the fact that you have you pay extra for rear parking sensors when you can hardly see put of the back window. Cruise control for me is also a must have. I don't like any of the m model colours like a lot of people have said and my favourite (after owning lots of black audis) is Mediterranean blue which of course you cannot get on the m models. Estoril blue is ok if you are 20 and want to look like a boy racer but not very subtle. With my options list my car came in at the same price as a standard 125d! These options should be available from the outset in my opinion. However I believe there is actually very little difference between a 120d and 125d in the real world. Both are fast enough.

    Be careful of the sidewall (should be the strongest part of the tyre from my understanding) I copped a freak puncture on my M135i on the sidewall and got lucky that I wasn't far from a tyre shop. That being said that was my experience and could just be a freak accident but completely agree about the need for a space saver

  • @Center-Shoulder-Wrist-Rotation

    Clutch is rather hard.
    Gear stick is notchy the first 5K miles.
    Steering is unnecessary hard in Sport Plus/DSC off.
    Rear end can feel a bit loose under hard driving.
    No oil temperature gauge.
    Small tank!. I average 19 MPG so a tankfull is only 260 miles and I do 14K miles a year.
    I don't like the way the gear stick goes into reverse I would prefer pulling up or pushing down on the gear stick so I don't accidentally go into reverse when I want to go into second.
    It's only minor negatives tho.

    Hi Joe, bit late on this one however some interesting Info. I had a F30 MG 335dMSort 2013 and yes with the Performance 405 20" wheels for my sins lol- fully de badged with no silly M badges 👌 I had huge issues with paint chips all over the front of the car and it took me 8 months to convince BMW to do a full front end respray. I was told by a BMW engineer that since oil based spray painting had been abolished due to led metal being part of the mixing process being poisonous and health and safety kicking in to now only water based paint being used that all new cars have shit thin paint however BMW seem to be the worse offender

    The paint problem is that every paintwork except the Apline white is Metallic and has a bigger layer of clear vanish so you don't get those problems. With ma 125i LCI in Mineral Grey I don't have those problems - and I took it for about 12.000km on the German Autobahn with some 200+ km/h drives ;)

    Joe, BMW can paint the car in ANY colour they have produced past or present but you have to order spesh at the time of purchase. However, don't quote me, cos it maybe 3 series & upwards. I remember seeing a very close if not a British racing Green M4 when I collected my M135i

    Surprised you think the extra amount of torque makes that much difference. Mine is just over two years old now so i may have to test an M140 to see! Considering your thoughts on the difference between the M135i and the M2 i think i may well consider an M240 next. Especially if you can tick Xdrive as an option. I work 30miles from home and do a lot of driving in all weather so Xdrive would be great for me. M240 Xdrive...as Mr Harris would say a bit of a weapon??

    I've had a M135 for 2 years now and I get these things but I'm happy to say most don't apply to my car. 5 door so seating position is low enough, HK tick, Professional Sat Nav tick, LSD tick, wheels upgraded to Oz 18" not staggered, Birds suspension, Adaptive tick. However I do still have the M badges and with a full Msport interior in carbon and Alcantara so that would probably still be a hate for Joe but I like it. So for me its about perfect but my only dislike is that its loud for others especially when I'm overtaking and seems to rub people up as I get flashed often. People just don't like to be overtaken by a BMW unfortunately and I don't like the attention so thats a nearly "hate".

    My m135i makes a whining noise in 2nd and reverse gear. My dealership reckons it's normal but apparently it's a fault with the ZF gearbox's gear coatings. It's a great car but this noise drives me crazy

    We've got a 1Series LCI as well, I totally agree, the paint quality is just bad... If you're not very careful especially while cleaning that car, you're gonna have scratches all over...
    I personally would swap the wheels anyways so that's not a big deal for me😅

      +Der Unbekannte the LSD is something I personally wouldn't get from BMW... It only limits to about 30% I believe, there are tuners that offer up to 90 oder 95% here in Germany Tuningwerk... It's the same price as the BMW one but works a lot better! There is a guy on CZcams that actually drifts that... Alex Hardt is his name I think... But warranty is of course another point, right😉
      BMW should at least offer a REAL LSD not just some 30% stuff IMO...

    My things for M235i (compared to E46, in order of importance, most probably applicable to M140i too): 1) No coolant/oil temp gauge ; 2) LED for turned on wipers is completely obscured by the steering wheel. ; 3) Electronic-only measurement of oil level ; 4) You cannot see how much water you have in windshield washer tank ; 5) Start-stop system which cannot be permanently turned off. ; 6) Loud bitching about not fastened seat-belts after 20 meters of 10 km/h crawling. Other than that - it's a lovely car though, very fast, cleverly designed and strong.

      bigger wheels (not broader), even if they are lightweight, decreases the acceleration. the wheel travels longer for one roation. more topspeed - slower acceleration

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 Před 6 lety +2

      +Markus W Only true if the overall diameter of the wheel + tyre is larger, which is why larger rims usually are accompanied by lower profile tyres: the overall diameter remains the same. However, having alloy (which is probably heavier than rubber + a bit of steel in the tyre) further away from the centre increases the moment of inertia of the wheel, which will make the car harder to accelerate.
