Vegan Kids are Malnourished and Stunted? (New Studies!)

  • One type of negative comment I receive relates to my children and their diets. I’m frequently told that feeding my kids vegan is unhealthy, even child abuse. Supposedly kids can’t possibly get the nutrients they need from plants alone, so vegan kids are inherently malnourished.
But what does the science say? Are vegan kids more likely to be malnourished? Lucky for us, TWO separate reviews on vegan kids just came out. Let's have a look!

My 12 year old vegan daughter is thriving. She is 5/3 has reached puberty on schedule. She is not underweight. She is very intelligent. All bloodwork comes back consistently perfect. I do give her a sublingual B12 supplement even though I probably don’t need to. We eat a wide variety of multicoloured fruits and vegetables. We have flax chia and hemp on our oatmeal. We eat beans and tofu. Lots of greens. She has junk food sometimes. There is no problem with a vegan being healthy.

Happy to see a study from Finland 😁 veganism and vegetarianism are rather popular here, although hunting is also common and so there seems to be two loud groups fighting about what to feed our kids at school (as the school lunch is free and for everyone) and food in general. In my former high school the vegetarian option is first and meat second and meat is only served on certain days. It was easy to give up meat in high school because of that, and I've been vegetarian for six years now 😁 I enjoy the availability of vegetarian and vegan options in restaurants and grocery stores: for example, we have had a vegan burger in mcdonalds for years now and it is delicious!

I agree. My dad actually went vegan a couple of years ago, thanks to all of the climate-conscious literature that's been published.
Fishing as a leisure activity us extremely integrated to our culture, especially in rural areas. It's way more acceptable for me to be vegan in a bigger city (Tampere) than in a smaller, more rural city (Lohja) for example, although there are vegan options all across the country - even if it's some sad bags of TVP in the most peripheral areas of the Eastern lands. Many of poor students actually use TVP, even if they aren't vegan. It's cheaper.
Granted, I grew up near a huge lake. I wonder if a part of our fishing culture is connected to survivalist - we do have *certain ecologists* that lived in islands in the middle or nowhere living off of fishing, which is pretty much the only reliable way to find food at that point except for berries.
It's still hard to find vegan options at some events, but it's way easier than it used to be a couple of decades ago.
A sociologist called Semi Purhonen has actually found a connection with heavy diets and rural areas in contrast with light diets, vegetarianism and cities. Quite interestingly, the preferences in diet also coincide with your cultural preferences, I.e. high-brow literature vs. Low-brow rock festivals. I've found this applying to vegan options in certain places as well. Not a lot of vegan meat pies at the marketplace.

I am not sure if height even is a sufficient indicator of health. It‘s not good when babies are getting too big in the womb for example, it is increasing risks at birth, risks for the child‘s health later on and it is associated with gestational diabetes. In adults being too tall isn‘t always a good thing either, tall people are more likely to develop cancer and the reason they are so tall sometimes is hormonal health issues. Maybe people on meat and dairy get taller because of the additional hormones they consume?

You want to be careful with supplementing minerals like calcium and iron. Supplementing calcium has been linked with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Around 500mg/day of calcium is considered adequate by the World Health Organization, and many people in cultures that eat predominantly plant-based diets consume around that much ever day. That's the standard I usually go by. In Britain, the recommended intake is 700mg/day. I wouldn't supplement to above that. There is little evidence that supplemental calcium helps increase bone density in otherwise healthy people.
Iron can also build up in the body, especially in men. Excessive iron levels are believed to contribute to oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease. Also, the majority of lipofuscin in aging nerve cells is filled with iron. At present, there are no known ways to safely remove these from nerve cells.
It seems most vegans get adequate levels of zinc, and in most studies Vegans have had adequate blood levels, so I remain skeptical that zinc is a serious problem for vegans. Again, this is an element that accumulates in aging nerve cells, impairing their function, so it's not clear if supplementing zinc in high doses is really a good thing. The best thing is probably to make sure you eat a wide variety of foods, and you should have adequate levels of zinc, since it's found in small amounts in many whole foods.

I think there is an important asymmetry here. If you find an unhealthy vegan kid, that doesn´t prove that vegan diets are in and on itself unhealthy. But if you find a healthy vegan kid that means there´s at least one way of doing it right. Right? One could argue that only the ones with awesome genetics thrive and the ones with average or mediocre genetics get ravaged no matter what. But still if vegan eating is just an unsustainable pipe dream a vegan from birth should be falling apart by 20 yo regardless the wonderful genetics. We know that is not the case. It´s harder to research the ways of doing it right, yet very doable.

What? I'm sorry you had that experience. If you have access, consider consulting a dietitian. Watching iron very is important, especially if you're menstruating. However, like I said earlier, supplementing (without consultation) can also be a devil.

@sphumelelesijadu Thank you. The NHS is terribly underfunded now & I was told they'd only order blood tests if there were health complaints. Not sure where you're based but Americans talk often about getting regular blood work. It seems it's cure over prevention here though, sadly

I remember the amount of hatred this channel got, at the beginning, because of the insistence on supplements. I found this channel because a friend of mine was not taking them and suffering the initial consequences. She did not like it, insisting on the idea that primates are by nature vegan. Today is supplements are common knowledge. I am not concerned, then, about vegan diets for adults. The problem with kids is that it's too early to know. We also have politics, today is almost certain that no alerts will be sound if the vegan diet affects mainly boys. We have the left behaving toward cannabis as the right did with big tobacco. Most people believe is safe when a proper description is: it's mostly safe for women and teenage girls. If science is not 100% in the hands of the PC police we will know the effects in 20 years. I hope that it will be 100% positive. The benefits of a vegan diet are so well known that it will be sad if it's not safe for kids.

the vegan way of eating is actually a fast mimicking diet. the benefits that the veganic eating pattern has are very similar to the benefits of fast mimicking diets, but they are not intended to be a long-term way of eating. those for whom excess weight is an issue will probably benefit from a veganic eating pattern, provided that it lasts only as long as necessary. after that period, problems occur that are otherwise associated with undernourishment and malnourishment. however, losing weight, except in rare cases, during a child's most dynamic developmental stage is still not a good idea.

Caring about meat-eating kids is different because people have been eating meat for millennia and it's the natural thing to do for humans (we are after all, primates). Understanding the risks for kids of a traditional diet requires study and abstractions: We are not calling 50-year-old people old any longer, so the average person lives enough for the consequences of such a diet to manifest themselves. We don't work all day doing physical labor We don't walk many km all days of the week. Ethical concerns beyond the natural order and others related to industrialization. We have far more evidence that animals are self-aware. Finally: the number of people in the West who can say: oh my mother raised me a vegan as her mother did is quite small.

Saturated fat doesn't cause heart disease. Humans are also perfectly fine with less fiber. These are non-issues for omnivores. On the other hand, vegans just can't get enough bioavailable nutrients without animal based foods. Animal husbandry isn't just a vegan issue and these things can be changed without jeopardizing our health with a vegan diet.
