Oh, yeah, "robust" children. I'm from an Eastern European country and I have several friends who have emigrated to various Western countries. A lot of them have been confronted by their children's teachers, principles and nurses and accused of abusing and not feeding their kids, because their children look too "skinny" and stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the class. These people are not even vegan or very healthy eaters. A lot of westerners just have no idea anymore what a normal weight looks like, especially in growing children. Babies and toddlers are supposed to be plump, not children.

@Axileus According to my now-grown children's family doctor, dark circles under the eyes are called "allergy shiners." I am an overweight vegan (yes, it actually happens) with dark circles - which I have had all of my life, even during omnivore years. During spring they are big enough to look atrocious as I deal with budding tree pollen. My kids who decided to not be vegan at adulthood still have their dark circles if they had them as vegan kids.

Eastern Europeans feed less processed food and more appropriate portions. I'm from Central Russia and grew up eating Russian style food combined with a German diet as I grew up in Germany. My Mum's frame was far less stocky than mine as she (unlike me) continued consuming an exclusively Russian style diet. I looked like the average northern Europe kid. Tall and stocky. Obviously that's just anecdotal evidence but Russian women overall have more slender figures than German women yet the Russian girls I know here in Germany have very "German" figures.

If you're older you remember most kids were skinny in the 60s and 70s...it was the default build for highly active kids. People have now become so accustomed to seeing people who are overweight or obese that they think there most be something wrong with you if you're slim. The reality is, a high percentage of people who live to be over 100 years old are slim...especially men.
Diets high in animal products have multiple effects. One is stimulating the release of insulin like growth factor. That will make your cells grow faster including muscle cells, but it also makes cancer cells grow faster. Health is very much a marathon...not a sprint...and you have to look at long term effects of diet and exercise to get a clear picture of what is likely to be good for your health.

Wonderful rebuttal to those concerns. Parents are often unable to correctly identify a child's weight category. In a 2014 meta-analysis by Lundahl published in Pediatrics, half of nearly 16,000 parents misclassified their child who had overweight/obesity as having a normal weight. If parents think a child with obesity is normal weight then they may easily conclude that another child with normal weight is underweight.

I believe they are healthier too thanks to the conscious food choices and trajectory we set as a family. Again thank you and please keep sharing what you learn and discover. Even though I've read and seen a lot, I have learned some great stuff on your channel since I found it a few months ago. I look forward to the complete interview with Dr Klapper in the near future. I really think Dr. Campbell is correct that the saturated fat in animal foods is only part of the story and animal protein plays a major role in the unhealthy aspect of meat. And it looks like the heme iron in meat is another large factor. More on that next episode.

At the end of the day, no matter how ridiculous science might look like, it has to make logical sense when doing the right logic thinking. Let’s say in front of your ancestors have two plates, one full of fatty red meats ready to eat, and one is great green salad, what do you think your ancestors would eat? He would eat as much fatty meats as possible before he realized it and had absolutely no appetite for the great green salad at all. I am an older millenial but have seen the devolution of decency in our discourse. It used to be that a small segment of the population would say/do egregious things to others (esp. in public) nowadays people commonly fight and harass others at retail centers and airports (among other places). I mention this because I think people are extremely critical of their fellow humans in ways I have not experienced before.

It was a very balanced diet, the problem was that my body couldn't handle the quantities of fiber without the issues above. I think it had to do with me being raised with very minimal fruits and veggies in my diet. Introducing animals products back into my diet fixed all those problems. And I tried everything I could to avoid eating meat also. I did a food journal, to see if it was a specific food. I've done every single surgery, painful procedure, and have tried all the awful drugs, and expensive alternative treatments available over the last 20 yrs. I eventually stopped every treatment except the meds that made me more stable/ comfortable, went on hospice and when we changed my diet to liquids, something amazing happened-- I started improving!
Then I started eating almost nothing but hummus, avocados, and banana baby food, and it was calming my entire body!
Three years later and I've graduated to whole foods, no longer bed bound, and I'm able to live on my own!
You know how incredible that feels?!

I think part of the problem stems from the fact that we now live in an era where thin children are the exception - but that wasn't always the case. I tend to marvel at old footage and photographs, and seeing just how slim everybody was.
And what actually qualifies Juliette Autumn to make such definitive statements about others? I mean, apart from failing at the relatively simple task of being vegan, what are her credentials or achievements?

I've been thinking a bit about a normal weight in kids and adults. As more and more people become overweight it will be hard to tell who is actually normal. I myself would consider myself a normal weighted 28 year old, but after going mostly vegan last summer I lost a few kilos I didn't know I could - or even thought about losing. Does that mean I'm more "normal" weighted now?
Linked to this is that as long as you preface your choices with being "vegan" people will express concerns or try to find flaws with things you're doing. For example would people question my food choices more if I'm explaining that they're vegan. No-one would object to oat meal for breakfast, lentil stew for lunch and bean tacos for dinner, except if they're vegan.

I was vegan/plant based for the majority of my life. Always very thin, would get sick more often than friends who didn’t care about their diet at all. Multiple blood tests per year, to make sure everything was on track with my diet.
Started taking fitness more serious, and lifting weights to put on a little size. No energy, joint pain, and not seeing many gains.
Decided to try and see what adding small amounts of meat into my diet did. Within a month you could physically see muscle size in my body. Keeping healthy weight on is easy, and I no longer look like if I trip I’ll break into 1000 pieces.
I go long periods without getting sick now. I used to eat very limited amounts of treats & grain and seed bread. Cut the sweets and “healthy bread” out and no more joint pain.

There is no other diet for me anymore. However, I do think raising kids on a vegan diet can be a tricky topic, not from a nutritional point of view, but from a social one. Our friends have a kid in kindergarten and they chose not to force special dietary wishes, since they don‘t want their kid to be excluded because Of it. And they can’t control what she is eating away from home. But if I had kids, I would raise them on a vegan diet and eventually give them their own choice.

4:28 looking forward to the episode with a hematologist. The topic of functional iron deficiency is very interesting, especially as it relates to allergy and autoimmunity. The work of Franziska Roth-Walter on lipocalin 2 and birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 is really interesting. Lipocalin 2 is an iron binding protein that has roles in host defense against intracellular pathogens and also neurodegenerative diseases. Regulation of lipocalin 2 expression seems to be inversely related to that of LRRK2 (seems to be, there's only one paper); LRRK2 is in turn inhibited by B12. I have been wanting to read more on this topic, but have not had enough time. But anyway, the problem with functional iron deficiency is that consuming more iron may not fix it, and might even make matters worse if the problem is gut dysbiosis or infection by something that is iron-dependent. My daughter had stool microbiome testing that showed an overgrowth of Klebsiella - if this is accurate then that would explain a lot as Klebsiella is iron hungry & host defense involves increasing hepcidin production.

I was an absolute rake for the first 16 years of my life. In fact, I was so thin that my mother was often concerned I could develop an ED right under her nose (I didn't). All this happened while knowing nothing about veganism, so I ate what most people would consider a fairly healthy Western diet: No takeout, no fastfood, almost no snacks or sweets, but vegetable rich homemade food with eggs and lean meat and one to two glasses of milk per day. I was very active too. (Portion size was not restricted. If I wanted seconds, I'd have seconds or thirds.)
Weird, how all this healthy food led me down a road of heavy IBS symptoms (and eventually being overweight) , that would only get a lot better when I found my way to the nutrient deficient "vegan diet".
Oh, btw., my congenital "definitely not diet related" heart disease, that's been in the family for as long as anybody can remember, has been getting a whole lot better too! No, it won't just vanish into thin air, but the difference ever since I switched diets has been absolutely staggering. My current cardiologist actually now believes he misdiagnosed me for the first 7 years. He didn't. The diagnosis has been confirmed by multiple specialists. It's mind-boggling what a really healthy diet of plants can do.
