    Super lesson! I tried this at the range today and it truly worked. Best thing about it was I wasn't focused on getting the ball onto the green from the bunker but imagining how much momentum it would take to get the divot of sand out. I also had a huge smile after I easily got a plugged ball out using the closed face position. Thanks! You truly are the #1 most popular golf teacher on youtube. Ian, Philippines.

    Hey Shawn, yesterday I hit the bunkers after work.. I hit short to long shots using a sand wedge and my 60degree. I used tempo and rhythm to avoid bladed and shank, 22 out of 24 balls landed on the dance floor..with out the tempo and rhythm I hit a blade and a shank.
    . The size of my swing gives me my distance!
    This swing is simple, and it becomes very controllable. Talk about confidence!
    Again ,thanks for your insight (wisdom).

    Shawn, thanks for the video. I have tried your thought of imagining the momentum required to toss the sand to the hole. I have since had 3 sand shots in 2 games. 2 shots bounced in the hole for birdies (no lie). One went by the hole and stopped within "gimmie" range. I did open a 60 degree wedge with a cut swing. I surprised myself as I don't usually get my sand shots close to the hole. I hope I see more of it. Thanks again!

    @dancemonkey1313 Rarely will you ever need to modify the swing as this will be more than adequate for 99% of your bunker shots; uphill, downhill, sidehill, use the same techniques I talk about in the "golf pro lesson uphill downhill sidehill" video; except you are skipping across sand instead of grass and ground. Think high fade for the highest pot bunker lips with the same technique; Shawn

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  Před 14 lety

    @mondeoclub Well if you can't blast it that far, then you need to make it a pitch where you catch the ball first and feel how much momentum you need for that! Same as the web tip on the golf channel video I submitted! Shawn

    @clemshaw when the sand is hard pan do you just pick it?

  • @golflessons
    @golflessons  Před 12 lety +1

    exactly the same technique! You will feel the texture of the sand through the feet and if you keep the focus on using momentum to move the sand forward using the sole of the club, you will feel exactly how much momentum you will need to use! Just try it with sand only and then when you put the ball there, DO NOT LET YOUR FOCUS GO TO THE BALL!! It is just a grain of sand amongst the rest of them and continue to use the same focus as when you were simply skipping sand onto the green w/momentum

  • @bluejfk

    This drill helped me make a birdie today. I went for a drivable par four with a waste bunker down the left side. I clipped a tree branch and was 50 yards out. I used this method and was pin high ten feet to the right( I forgot to tallow for the own club face) normally I would have tried to pick it.

  • @bluejfk
    @bluejfk Před 10 lety

    The closed club face method works great when your ball is nestled in the green side cabbage. You do have to compensate where you swing to a lot for the closed club face though...

  • @bman342a

    I used to be able to hit great greenside bunker shots. I would get my club nicely under the ball, get some loft, and some check, and generally be within a four-foot radius of the pin.
    All of a sudden, my club is skidding through the sand, and I am continually blading sand shots. I cannot any longer seem to hit underneath the ball as I used to. Oddly, it is the same sand wedge I have been hitting with for ages.
    My ball position is usually back of center (ball towards my back foot, just past center), open stance, and relatively open club face. Thank goodness for the lip, as that has saved me several times in recent rounds, with my ball just popping out of the sand instead of 30 feet over the green. Heeeeellllppppp!!!!

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 7 lety +1

      You missed a lot of stuff in this video bman!
      When you open the face, THIS IS A FADE SHOT!! The fade has the ball forward of centre and THERE IS NO UNDER THE BALL!!! There is only spraying sand onto the green by skipping the sole of the club ALONG THE SAND; the ball is just another grain of sand so do not ever focus onnthe ball, focus on where you want the sand to land! Skip a few pennies onto the green and then place a ball over the penny and skip the penny on the green again!

    • @bman342a

  • @golflessons

    @shinji0843 It is exactly the same technique! This just means that you are focused on the ball because you are wondering what to do with that lie! If you are not sure how the ball will come out, your focus is no longer on the spot you want to land the sand!! PICK A SPOT WHERE YOU WANT THE WET SAND TO LAND AND USE THE MOMENTUM NEEDED TO GET THE SAND THERE; when you do that without a ball a few times then put a ball there and repeat the SAME FOCUS!!

    Shawn: I live in Sedona and our green side bunkers are very compacted do to nightly irrigation... therefore it's very difficult to keep the club from bouncing off the hard pan. Any tips for a compacted bunker? The 60 degree has lots of bounce and just skip's off the sand and thin's the ball.

    • @WisdominGolfPremium
      @WisdominGolfPremium Před 8 lety

      You never want more than 8 degrees of bounce on any sand wedge when in it to perform the task properly. And there is a big difference between compacted sand (very easy to move with the sole of the club) and clay hardpan where there is no sand (much more difficult)

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 5 lety

      That would put your focus on where you hit the sand; WHICH IS NOT YOUR TARGET. The target is the spot on the green where you want the sand to land!
      Your eyes are on the spot of sand an inch behind the ball but the VIEW BECOMES GLAZED OVER AS YOUR MIND FOCUSES ON THE PICTURE OF A SAND DIVOT LANDING ON THE GREEN WHERE YOU WANT THE BALL TO LAND.
      You are using the momentum of the arm-club unit to spray the sand divot onto that spot; The ball is a big grain of sand that goes with it.

  • @risajajr
    @risajajr Před 6 lety

    The snow plow analogy confuses me. It seems like you are saying the part of the club below the leading edge (aka, the bounce) is used to shoot sand onto the green. That sounds like you are trying to throw sand and the ball with the plow-like action of the bottom of the club, without the club actually going under the ball. Maybe it is the case that the plowing action moves sand and ball up and toward the green before the club actually gets to the ball position and, thus, the club glides underneath the ball? I always thought it was the club face that shot the sand and ball.

    How about what to do when the quality of the bunker is pretty, or absolutely, awful? The bunkers at my local barely deserver the name of 'bunker'. They're not raked (no rakes supplied because they get stolen), the sand is clumpy, full of leaves, twigs and even stones. It's more like hitting off loose concrete than sand.
