We’ve had a 20hp Honda four stroke in our family for a long long time now. It’s done loads of shingles and a lot of trips where it’s Barely able to get on plane at the end of the weekend from island to shore. Love the motor and its reliability. We just need a transom that can last 85years now. Our grummans 50yrs on now so that’s our next to do.
Is it me or does every class of boats have some sort of gem that’s able to handle more hp and g forces despite insurance companies not covering over powered boats..
When i was a kid, i had a little boat with a 9.8 mercury. Drove that for years full throttle jumping waves and over revving the engine. Never had a single problem. Absolutely bullet proof. That was the 70’s. Good times.
The Merc 110 was underrated for its power output. Solid motor for sure.
still running 2001 yamaha 175 hpdi 2 stroke. as long as fuel filters are changed on a regular basis runs great.

The EPA cracked down on two strokes yet one big factory belches out more pollution than all of the two stroke engines in the country. The people pay while corporate interests pollute with impunity.

BRP has strong armed all the OEM boat companies that comes under their umbrella that a certain percentage of the boats must have the new BRP outboard installed. All major boat manufacturers have retooled their deck designs and the argument about the OBs taking up too much transom space is total BS. We have a Monterey M65 OB and our platform rivals any IO version. A person jumping off the center an IO swim platform has the same chance of striking the prop as with an OB. Anyone that doesn’t run non ethanol fuel in an OB or IO is a fool. Ethanol fuel left in a tank for extended periods will screw up an IO the same as an OB. Mercury Verado has two fuel filters/separators on the power head plus the external inline fuel filter. Agree that it’s best to have a starter and house battery. We alternate usage between the two with the selector switch. I’ll also agree that the time to retire all the two strokes is here, even the Optis are stinkers. There is zero benefit to buy a boat with an IO other than a few grand cost for the OB.
How do you define consistently running a boat?
At least running a tank of fuel a month and if not running for longer than a month, you treat the fuel (and run thru the fuel system) and do other prep as needed depending on the specific engine

Which is more advantageous (less costly) for repairs/maintenance, outboard or stern drive?
Outboards for sure, especially in areas that freeze
Alot of bull in this video. Nothing wrong with outboard motors. If ur having problems especially with a yamaha. Thats a you problem. Bot the motor. The right outboards can last 30+ years
