  • Hi there!!
My name is Evita and I have decided that I am sick of wondering how the produce I consume was grown. I want start to paying a major role in growing a lot my own food. My hopes for the future is to have my own homestead where I can grow and store ALL of my (and my family's-not vegan) food.
I want to share my journey with everyone because I know I will make a few mistakes and some of you may be able to help me along the way. ❤

Don't panic. Don't give up. My first year gardening I didn't know much either. The second year was better. 2 things I'd suggest. 1) make sure your beds are sufficiently wet. 2) plant the seedlings with the growing medium rather than separating the seedlings from it. Keep gardening you will learn as you go. The first time you are able to harvest and eat what you've grown it will all have been worth it.

soil is soil love, let it do what it do and when the white spores on the top form its normal it will die off as soon as its exposed to sunlight and the weather it will do away. you can never have enough worm castings and you dont need top soil for raised beds. get out ya head because you are doing great love! keep practicing and keep making mistakes this is how you learn! watching from Virginia 7b grow zone!

Don’t stress about what you have done so far.
A few tips with your next elevated garden bed (and you will get more 😂):
    1. Use potting mix. Potting mix is light and fluffy, great for elevated garden beds.
    2. Worm castings is good to use, the amount you used isn’t an issue - the plants will not suffer from it.
    3. With the garden bed liner, I too staple the liner to the sides so when I add the potting mix, it won’t slip down.
    4. In your area, I don’t think the night temperatures is a problem, unless it gets to freezing/frost temps. Unlike here in Central Ohio where we’re expecting snow flurries tonight.
    5. Right before you plant your seedlings, moisten the soil first, it’ll help the roots.
    6. Not necessary to add twigs to the bottom of the box. Those boxes are usually only 8 to 10 inches deep.
    7. I have used those peat pots before and they didn’t decompose as advertised. So removing the seedlings from the peat pots is a good thing, otherwise as your plants grow, the roots will become restricted and stop growing properly.
Last thing I’ll mentioned, but it’s not necessary - to the potting mix I also add vermiculite, perlite, worm castings and organic fertilizer.
And to retain soil moisture, particularly during the summer months, I use animal pine bedding from Menards or even Tractor Supply.
    Hope this helps some.
    Happy Gardening!

      @ButItsVegan  Před 3 měsíci

Thank you so much for the advice! 💚
I shouldn't have used the raised bed soil?
I have perlite and worm castings but I can't find vermiculite but are you saying to add it in addition to my seed starting mix?

    • @deboz8793
      @deboz8793 Před 3 měsíci

      @@ButItsVegan
The raised bed soil you used is just fine.
The seed starting mix don’t actually need other amendments to it. But for big bags of potting mix, those I do add vermiculite, perlite, worm castings and organic fertilizer to.
I used to buy ProMix potting mix in a 2 cubic compressed bag from Menards, but they stop selling that for this year. Now when I do need more, I’ll have to get something else.
And next year if you need to revitalize the soil, that’ll be a great time to add sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, worm castings and organic fertilizer. And if you have other containers of soil without and plants growing in them, use that too. I do this all the time. It saves you money so you’re not buying a lot of bagged soil.

Last year I planted my first garden. I purchased my seeds from MIGardner as well. My beets, radishes, carrots and Swiss chard did so well in spite of my inexperience. It got really hot here in Texas and my butternut squash and cucumbers only bloomed male flowers so they did not perform as normal. I will definitely try to grow more this year. I’m going to do succession planting especially with some pepper and tomato plants. Keep going and don’t give up! You got this. Even if you don’t get the crop yield you wanted you will gain a lot of experience!!! Good luck and thank you for trying and sharing your journey with us!!! ❤ PS. Hey Sis!
I love the idea of creating a garden notebook. So important to be able to look back to see what worked and what did not work.
Please give yourself some grace. This is something new for you.
Gardening can be easy and gardening can be not so easy sometimes. 😂
Remember, each seed represents a full plant.
Thinning out is very important. It can also be very tedious work.
I would suggest that you plant a lesser amount of seeds and spread them out so that the thinning process will not be so tedious.
Also, start out slow, don’t stress yourself out trying to grow all the things. It’s best to master just a few and add on to that later on.
Watch lots of gardening videos, and just try to have fun and enjoy learning the process.
Also, the raised garden soil is fine, however you can also use regular ole potting mix as well as it is very fluffy.
All the Best! You got this!

Bless your Heart Girlfriend! 💚Gardening is ALOT of trial and error! There's great instructional videos I found on CZcams during my journey and I'm still learning! This year will be my First with Real vegetable garden beds, not just pots here and there. I have always had flower gardens in my backyard but no True veggy garden so wish me Luck!....when searching Start with planting for your zone- everyone's different as far as timing depending on your frost dates. As far as the fruits buried -I don't know? I have a kitchen scrap compost bin and throw Everything in there to break down First! The soil is fine...everything is a Living bio-organism -just like everything in nature it has living things in it that are decomposing. Those are all cold hardy veggies! If your concerned you can cover them if it gets too cold (take it off during day to get sun and air) Potatoes from the store sometimes won't grow because they are treated with chemicals for the grocery store. Potatoes take A Long time! You can order "seed" potatoes online? Or just "chit" organic ones. Seed starts need to be more established before going into garden bed (need at least two sets of True leaves and hardened off First (if grown inside) before going out in cold. Otherwise just direct sow into garden and let Mother Nature do her Thing! Some things prefer direct sowing, like carrots, beets, radishes etc...Also check to see How big things will grow when mature to make sure they're spaced properly and don't crowed out other plants or if they grow really tall, that they don't shade out others from the sun. Check out Companion planting to see which ones like to grow together! Fingers Crossed for us Both on our journey into Veggy Growing! 🤞😉🌱

So, what you are saying is that I need to dig up my store-bought potatoes that I planted, lol.
I guess I need to do more research because I didn't know about true leaves before plating into the raised bed. I am happy you told me about carrots, I almost put them in a starter container...You just made realized that I have A LOT more to learn. Lol, thank you 💚🌱

@@ButItsVegan You're Very welcome! Seems like we are on a similiar journey with our new veggy gardens! It's alot of trial and error-even with research it's mostly what works for You in your area and your space! NEVER GIVE UP!!! It's never a failure if you learned something along the way.... I made a Very easy compost bin just using one of my old (outside) garbage cans with a lid. Mine just happened to have wheels -Bonus for Me! You drill a Bunch of holes in the bottom (for drainage and also to let worms in to help decompose the organic matter) and then a bunch more holes up the sides for air flow. There's a couple cool DIY videos on CZcams if you want to see how they do it.
For the carrots-I'm going to try a trick I saw starting them in cardboard egg trays! Then you can take the whole thing and plant it in the garden and it will decompose in the soil. Also looks like they will be perfectly spaced as well.
I live in Upstate NY sooo I have the challenge of a looong winter, so my actual growing season in short Because it gets very hot come July/Aug. I'm excited because all the kids pitched in and bought me a little greenhouse last summer for my birthday! So it's tricky up here!😜

Congrats on taking the first steps in starting a garden! You are doing great, do not get frustrated. Gardening is supposed to be a stress reliever, don't overthing everything. There are about 1000 different ways to garden and everyone thinks their way is the best. 😅 i follow square foot gardening, it tells you how many plants can go in 1 sq ft, that way you dont over crowd and maximize your space. Also, remember you dont have to geow 200 different things youre first year. We all started with just a few pots and a couple of plants. Gardening can be a very overwhelming hobby with everyones "rules", so starting small can help you figure out what will work for you. Each season you can add a few more plants. If you do want to add more cole crops now some suggestions are peas, beets, turnips, kholrabi, radish, cilantro, carrots (which i can never grow, but i still try 😅), mizuna, and lots of other leafy greens.
The plastic was a great idea to help the seedlings. The days that it get above 55 and is sunny, you can take it off, then put it back on at night.

Nothing wrong with a little rust (re your staples), just more mineral iron for your plants! And there can never be too many worm castings. You are basically composting in place, with all the stuff you put in the bottom (I would have eaten the oranges though - they look whole? - and then put all the peels in). They are in the bottom, so hopefully they will be breaking down as your plant roots reach them. Gardening can be messy, but it is a good messy. Your raised bed soil is just fine. I usually buy the same brand for my pots and even seed starting. Be super careful of the stems and leaves of your little seedlings - hold gently by a leaf and gently tuck in the little baby roots. You have a nice start, and I would suggest once they start growing so that they have maybe 8-10 leaves already, harvest a leaf here, a leaf there, going from the lowest on the stem and upwards as they continue to grow, to start enjoying your garden in your meals; and do more of what grows well. For spacing, as things grow, you will learn by watching them over time what is crowded and what is not. Give your little plants a chance to get used to where they are now and to grow! That is plenty of potatoes for each pot, no more than that. You will find that the things that like their location, will really go crazy and things like kale can get huge. Spinach can be tricky to get to grow depending on where you live and how much heat or cold, but most of the other things you are trying are quite forgiving for whatever conditions you have.

I am just a worry wart. I did end up removing all of the fruit I placed in that raised bed. So, don't add layers of potatoes to the pots that they are in? I was thinking I planted my kale, lettuce, etc. too close to each other. Well, too late now, I don't want to keep bothering the roots. If I can get one to grow properly I will be happy. 💚

Gardening is a wonderful thing, give yourself credit for trying and your interest in gardening is well founded. Gardening challenges everyone in many ways, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I find myself becoming attached to not only the plants I grow but also the environment around me. Gardening challenged my perceptions about the weather, insects, birds, animals, even the sun . So, my advice to you is hang in there, don’t be discouraged, the cycle of life is what your journey is all about and it will reward you in so many ways, you’ll be Amazed.

Hey sweet lady, new subscriber excited to support you ❤❤ I LOVVVVE gardening, I'm no professional at all it was my psychologist who recommended I get into gardening almost 4 yrs ago , and when I started, I went full out omgosh it's such a theropy for me❤ my garden is 80% perennial fruiting garden, because I need things that you plant and they come back every yr with Beautiful harvest, so I came up with a plan to turn our backyard into a Beautiful fruiting garden, and then I also have a 20% vegetable garden. It's all still a work in progress but not only me and my hubby but my family and neighbors have been enjoying the amazing garden blessings❤❤ our garden is 100% chemical free, and I use free healthy natural fertilizers, at our local coffee shop I get buckets and buckets of coffee grinds, I use non treated grass clippings, vegetable and egg shell compost, and I get garbage bags full of beautiful seaweed, full of natural salts and minerals. Like I said I'm no professional and I can't follow rules and directions it has to be easy and understanding for me.i pray over everything and the biggest thing I know God blessing each plant and vine and all the soil and all that is His anyway.been having wonderful abundance

    hi evita 🤗
hope for a full recovery of your foot injury.
new subscriber. saw this video in my feed. im a small backyard gardener in southern california, zone 10b.
your potting soil and manure are "alive", so it's a good sign that a few things are growing in it. those eggs were probably from flies and that would've creeped me out too (ive never used black cow, and have seen mixed reviews).
i usually pour out my soil in a wheel barrow or a large tarp, stir it around a bit, and let it sit for a day or two in the sun before sifting and using. the oranges will eventually decompose and add nutrients to your soil. I don't think you'll end up with orange trees in your raised bed 😂.
i grow in buckets, planter pots, grow bags and raised beds (my native soil is hard to work with).
gardening is trial and error, therapeutic, wonderful, frustrating, fulfilling - all the things.
the yt gardening community is awesome and a wealth of knowledge and support. zo's homestead is in fayetteville, nc and has a really good yt channel.
there are many amendments that add n-p-k and trace minerals. the potting mix will get you started, but different plants need different amendments (or you can use a general fertilizer - same number for npk, like 3-3-3, 5-5-5, etc).
over time, you will learn what works best for you and your garden.
generally, brassicas, leafy greens and root vegetables do well in cool weather. most seed company websites list cool and warm weather crops or you can research the plants and seeds you've already purchased.
my comment is already a novel, so ill end it here. be encouraged and take lots of notes. your videos will also become great references. looking forward to following your gardening journey. tfs

So far I have experienced frustration while gardening. Lol, can't wait to experience the fulfilling part. I will check out Zo's Homestead; thanks for the suggestion.

  • @christopherpolanco1126

Gardening is like anything else, you get better with time and experience. The most important thing is to have FUN with it. Don't overthink stuff, don't stress yourself out. Gardening should be pleasurable. You're def gonna make a million mistakes, you'll learn from them. I wouldn't worry about the citrus you put in the beds. Worm castings are good as they add additional nutrients to the soil, you don't need them however, you were perfectly fine with your raised bed soil by itself, that soil comes with nutrients in it already. The seedlings next time you should wait until they are hardier looking and grow them on a little more, a strong seedling is gonna make a strong plant. When they start looking like the ones from the nursery that you bought, you'll want to expose them to sun for 30 minutes to an hour a day and increase the time each day for a couple days, this is hardening them off so they can get use to the sun and the wind, that is when they are good to plant. When you buy them from the nursery they are already good to go and you can plant them as soon as you bring them home.

Stay encouraged. Gardening is truly a learning experience. It’s just like raising kids. With the first one everything is by the book and you make all your mistakes and they still turn out all right. When the second one comes along you know what works and what doesn’t. I’m in year three of gardening. I live in zone 5b. And I’m taking everything I learned and mistaked in year one and two and building on that. With your seedlings you started indoors want to wait until they get their first true leaves. I call the first set seed leaves. True leaves are what they will always grow. Then you hardened them off by placing them outside in a shaded area for I think 30 minutes and you gradually increase the time you have them out. I know when you do this you don’t put them in direct sun because they have to build up a tolerance to the UV rays. To prevent the leggy seedlings. Use grow lights if you star them indoors. Many folks say they are leggy because they are searching and reaching for the light. In the open area you can try some direct seed sowing just in case the ones you planted don’t make it through.
    Hope this helps 😊

The raised bed is fine. The wood and fruit on the bottom will compost into soil eventually but next time you should put the fruit and other materials like that in a separate container and let it turn into compost before using it in your growing container. It's okay. You will learn and you will get better. When you grow seedlings make sure they have grow lights or strong sunlight. Wait until there are three sets of leaves before transplanting into the raised bed. Don't worry too much about the roots. If the seedling has three sets of leaves the roots should be good and strong, The first set of leaves on a plant are condeleon and are the baby leaves the second set of leaves are the true leaves, and the third set of leaves will also be true leaves and then you can plant them into the raised. You can actually plant most cool weather crops by sowing seeds straight into the soil. That works with collards, spinach, kale, mustard, beets, carrots, radishes, grow great when planted right in the raised bed. The one mistake you made with your seedlings is that you did not give them enough light. That is why they grew leggy and floppy. We all make that mistake at first. Keep trying! You will do great!!!!! Worm castings are great and you can not over do it so do not worry.

    • @ButItsVegan
      @ButItsVegan  Před 3 měsíci

Don't get discouraged. Keep getting advice from your friend and do garden research. Try different things. Even if some things don't make it, something will grow! Learn from your gardening this year to improve your results next year. And always remember, you can always try again! By the way - I wouldn't worry about that citrus, unless you put a ton in the bed, it's not going to matter. Don't worry about the worm castings - it's just a waste of money, it won't hurt your plants. Don't worry about the whole veggies you threw in, they will eventually break down.

CaliKim29 Garden and DIY - from Southern California
    MiGardener - from Michigan
Epic Gardening - from Southern California
There are others, but these are the three I view the most. They have lots of videos for recent gardeners to glean from.

You don't even need "raised bed soil," regular potting soil or outdoor soil will do just fine. 😅😅😅😅

Don't take them out of the biodegradable containers. They biodegrade for a reason. 😂😂😂😂

Oh, yeah. They were stressing me out I had to. Lol. Crazy because I purchased bigger ones too… I will try to leave whatever I put in them, in them lol.

@@ButItsVegan Yeah, it's for the best to leave them in. Les transplant shock, and I figure the containers become a part of their nutrients.

12:45 I don’t know if anyone said this or not. I’m too lazy to read through all of the comments. You want to wait until your seedlings get their “True Leaves” before transplanting them.
