    I think that you're supposed to put those disk/pellets in a container and pour hot water on them. Then let them sit, soak the hot water. and cool before starting seeds in them. Don't quit! After watching I just ordered some seed starting pellets. I've been watching gardening videos and researching gardening for awhile. I was putting it off. but you've inspired me to go ahead and just try. It's okay if I mess up I most likely will, but that's part of learning. Keep gping!

    There’s nothing you “should” do with vermiculite. You *can* add it to your soil mix to retain water or to create voids for drainage, in a similar way perlite does, depends on what your soil mix needs. You *can* sprinkle some on top to help prevent some of that green algae that sometimes forms on the soil surface.

    You are doing great, when you start seeds make sure you put a clear dome over the containers or saran wrap to create a humid environment that will help your seeds germinate. Make sure to water your seedlings and personally I don’t think you should be adding anything to your seed mix wait until everything germinate and your seedlings have some true leaves then start to fertilize 😊

    I used to help my dad with the gardening. I started trying to do my own veggies in 2013 and tried again and again every year or two. I finally had a tiny harvest in 2020 and have gotten better harvests every year since. I strictly did container garden the last 2 years. 2022 I put 5 zuchinni in the ground and got a good harvest from them. Last year I put in 10 crops and got tomatoes, green beans, peas, bell peppers, zuchinni and hot peppers. This year I am getting 20 in ground beds ready to go and pretty and have garlic, onions and peas planted so far in the ground and tons of seeds. It's taken me a long time to make the garden a priority and keep up with them. Every time you get to harvest even one tomato or pea pod or anything it will probably spark you to be more avid and want to learn more and do better and keep trying! Once you get the hang of one crop it will make you feel so accomplished and so excited to get the hang of more every year. It's worth it to try and fail and start succeeding. I PROMISE! used to buy fertilizer but stopped. I don't use anything in my stuff. I get soil out of my yard and plant seeds in it. I have gotten soil from Walmart for when my soil doesn't drain but I think last year is probably the last time for buying that too because I just set up a composting area to make my own soil/compost from my rabbits and chicken manure. I've never had any issues with my plants without vermiculite or anything similar.

      Sounds like you had a great growing season last year, congrats! Twenty in ground beds, wow!! I can't wait to harvest at least one thing from my garden.
      I hope to be on your level of not purchasing soil from a store and making my own. I do recall my mother just planting right into the ground and not using any soil...but I also could be remember incorrectly. lol.

    I use vermiculite within the soil I mix, and when seed starting I have begun to sprinkle a little on top (after seed planting) to keep fungus gnats away from laying eggs in the soil. I top dress with the vermiculite because my seed starting is inside my house.
    And this is what I found on vermiculite:
    The biggest difference between vermiculite and perlite is moisture retention.
    When making the perlite vs. vermiculite decision, keep in mind that differences between the two include the fact that vermiculite contains nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which perlite doesn’t have.

    • @ButItsVegan

      Yes, I use both when I mix up my own seed starting soil. Which is: Burpee cocoa coir compressed brick, vermiculite, perlite, worm castings and a small amount of organic fertilizer.

    Espoma has a range of fertilizers. I mainly use the garden tone and had great success last year. I don't think you need to get the specific fertilizer for tomatoes, for example. You can get them at the big box store. Also, Black cow manure compost is what I use on top of soil to feed the plants as well. Also, are you able to put your planters and pots out in the sun like when you dried out the soil? That would be best. Also, Pro-Mix seed starter mix is a good mix. You should moisten but not wet your soil before planting.

    New gardener here. You remind me of when I first started. It's been 4 years now and each year I get better. If you find pots on sale...buy them because your garden will grow larger each year. The seed packets have the seed starting time on the back. Vermiculite helps drainage in the soil so it's mixed in your potting soil. I use sharpie's too. I don't think you have to cover the onions like that. My set instructions say to only plant them so basically the roots are covered with soil. Fill your bags up so you won't have to worry about topping off after you plant. Your straw could have seeds so that's why you have what looks like grass. Don't give up lololol. I would have had a talk with myself if I saw a snake too but you've spent too much money at this point. Can you put some rocks or something in the hole so it has to find another home? I'm excited to watch your journey. Also when you have to repurchase liquid fertilizer try the Alaskan fish fertilizer. Research miracle gro and I think you may stay away from those products in the future. Anyway, good job and keep growing. It gets better each year.

    • @ButItsVegan
      @ButItsVegan  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The seed starting packets throw me off, I won't lie lol. One packet said my zone can't plant them from March-June and I thought that was such a wide timeframe, lol.
      Dang it, so I done messed up onions, huh? 😞
      I was wondering if the "grass" was coming from the straw but wasn't 100% sure, thanks for confirming. 💚
      I wish I could put a big rock there but I rent and I never know when they are coming to cut the grass.
      Is there a vegan alternative to fish fertilizer? Oh no, what's wrong with Miracle Grow?!!?😨

    • @janicejennings6245
      @janicejennings6245 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ButItsVegan The planting time is a range based on frost dates. The best source is the Farmers Almanac, which you said you looked at, but sometimes it's incorrect (you can plan a pretty picnic but you can't predict the weather lolol).
      Let the onions keep going and you'll have your answer. Maybe they will still thrive, maybe not but you will learn from it.
      I don't know if there is a vegan option but that's a great subject to research. If you find an alternative let us know.
      I'll say it again. I'm so excited to watch your journey. You had me cracking up this whole video because it reminded me of when I started. One time I even let the horn worms eat my whole tomato and pepper garden because I wanted to understand them better. I think this was the same year the aphids sucked the life out of a couple of plants because I didn't know what they were or how to combat them. Now I grow a decent garden. I am going to try to do better this year with watering with fertilizer more often to see if I can grow more food. It's all about just to keep going and getting better.

    Congrats on the onions and garlic growing! And stop buying so much stuff. 😆 you don't need 10 different fertilizers. For me, if i buy a bunch of stuff i thinking I need to all, it just stresses me out more. So maybe hold off buying pots until you know you need them. Its easy to get sucked into buying all this stuff because 10 people on you tube did. Are there any seed swapping groups near you? That could be a great place to find local support and also free stuff (pots, seeds etc..)
    I agree with the previous commenter, don't add fertilizer to your seed Starting mix, it's already there. I've never used vermiculite. My veggies and herbs grow just fine. I also second covering the seeds with dome/plastic to create a humid environment. I've never used a heating mat, just lights. The grass if from the straw, not potatoes. You can try the layer of straw layer of dirt with your potatoes and see if it works, but it's not necessary. A lot of gardeners, just mulch at the top. Read your seed packets, they tell you how and when to plant. And just a heads up, a lot of herbs and flowers are hard to grow from seed, so don't get discouraged if nothing happens. Try to look at them as fingers crossed kinda planting.

      @@ButItsVegan I use straw instead of mulch, it's cheaper in my area and I pick out the grass. So if you like it, then use it. That's weird your tomatoes smelled like ammonia, I wonder if it was something from one of the fertilizers you used. I've started tomatoes w/out grow lights before (because yes, they can be expensive). I purchased large clear totes (10 gal maybe) and used them as mini greenhouses and kept the tomatoes outside, they did fine. I'm in zone 6, I think you said you are in SC, so that would more than likely work for your area as well - they just need to be in sun all day take the lids off if it gets too hot. There are plenty of gardeners/farms who do not use grow lights and use greenhouses so don't feel like that you have to use them.
