Ineos Grenadier : 4X4 OFF-ROAD Review - Defender Re-Born? | Catchpole on Carfection

- Henry Catchpole takes the Ineos Grenadier Off-road to test if it just as good on the dirt as the car it so closely resembles.
In recent years, the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G-Wagon have slightly shifted their focus to double up as status symbols, which has left a gap in the market for a solely utility focused off-roader.
The Ineos Grenadier is an homage to the those cars but in more than just appearance. It is built using a body-on-frame construction and has three locking differentials which suggests that it will be a very capable off-roading/overlanding vehicle. Ineos propose this as work-first vehicle that is all business. But will it fill the gap left behind by the Defender and Mercedes G-Wagon of old?
The Grenadier is powered by BMWs ubiquitous and reliable B58 and B57 engines (petrol and diesel respectively) mated to a ZF 8-speed torque converter automatic.
Here’s our first look at the Grenadier: • Is the Ineos Grenadier...
If you’re unfamiliar with Ineos, they are predominantly a chemicals company. You may have seen their name as a sponsor on the Mercedes AMG F1 cars. It was founded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe

The love child of a Defender and a G-Wagen. Cool 😎
This car is much better than I ever expected, like most people when I heard that this car was going into production the first thought was its just going to be a cheap replica. But this new car just looks awesome.
Ah absolutely superb. Henry Catchpole’s presentation skills are supreme. Wonderful to watch this and gain so much knowledge and information.
So much better than that clown show in every Carwow review.
@@peadargill7565 don’t watch him if you don’t like him. Every reviewer does things differently. Shmee has his own thing, Doug demuro reviews differently, seen through glass contents are awesome and Matt Watson does it in a whole different way than carfection. I watch all of them and you know, it’s like the more the merrier. No need to resort to name calling.
@@diddydoodat4488 What “name calling”?
I don’t know if it’s just me but I love the modern utilitarian look of this more than any current Land Rover
It's not just you! Personally, I think most of the current Land / Range Rover line up is ugly.
it's just you. Take a look at how quickly the new ones are selling, how slowly the old one sold and how few of these will be produced.
Looking forward to seeing this vehicle put through its proper paces. All videos to date on the Ineos have been in light-weight easy 4x4 conditions that any "off the shelf" off-road vehicle could handle. If this is truly the utilitarian beast that it is being made out to be, show us what it can truly do!
Their choice of B58 and ZF Trans is awesome. They engine-trans combo is silky smooth.
I have got to get one of these!
I have to appreciate Henry's professional approach. He mainly drives road cars yet he managed to deliver a great 4x4 review touching on all the specific technicalities only a true offroad enthusiast recognizes.
Couldn’t care much less about the car but if Carfection and Henry are reviewing it, I’m here.
what an amazing car
If only Henry could present all of Carfection's videos then I would watch all of Carfection's videos. He's in a class of 3; Harris, Catchpole and Metcalfe.
Would add the guy that used to be on Fifth Gear now on Lovecars, just can't remember the name rn (Tiff Needell)

@@ultraguy8771 yes thanks I just couldn't remember
Totally agree, and those 3 are amazing. If they did Top Gear together it would not be a failure...
But I'm glad that we have their 3 channels to enjoy.
That CarWow bloke and his mates need cancelling, terrible 🤣🤣🤮🤮
Add Iain Tyrrell….
Definitely ask the people at the Land Rover Experience in Dunkeld if you can visit. You'll be impressed how well all of their range does on their off-road course. The Range Rover Sport doing the same as the New Defender, and it's really great fun!
Grenadier looks capable. But I can see issues with it that are still there. I'll wait for the final version to see if they're fixed by then or not.
In my personal opinion (I know you guys will have different views, which is perfectly alright 🙂👍),I very much like the new Defender, but this Grenadier is an absolute beast 😃. It's awesome that a chemicals company has sponsored a hugely successful F1 team and now have made their own car which can rival pretty much any 4x4 off the beaten track. Awesome as always Henry/Carfection 😃👏
Well, making a 4x4 than can go about anywhere is not rocket science, people can even build cars in their own garages easily that beat standard 4x4's off the road 10 - 0. The difficulty comes when you want to make the vehicle simultaneously good on road, good off road and keep the price in reasonable range. Then when you add safety, etc. requirements of modern car use. Most so called new 4x4's are crappy off road, because they aren't really meant for that.
I love everything about this car, except for the offset speedometer. That's always been and always will be dumb. Please just put the damn thing back where it's meant to be, It already works!
Great video..I do think Henry is one of the best car journalists ....very watchable 👍👍.
Cool as ever Henry
"You shouldn't do you see you shouldn't stop on a slope like that where it's slippery but I did"....the explanation was cool
Great video as always
Who wouldn't have one looking exactly like that. All those stickers ... and even the colour, that's not normally one I'd consider. 👍
I want one. Look forward to it's release, hoping it's not over 100k in Australia.
The latest I have heard is around the $85k mark for the 'commercial' variant.
@@nnoddy8161 Correct. The wagon version, with the accessories etc that you want. Snork / bar / winch / roof etc etc. 100k.
Ummm why ? We've got Toyota's 70 series here !
This will be MUCH more expensive than a Toyota !
Plus you'll have all the outback reliability of a BMW engine with all its sensors and plastic parts and the cost of their yearly replacements 👍 LMAO
I guarantee you it'll be way over $100k once you add shipping fees, import fees, customer gouge margin and delivery fees.
48k pounds is already 90k AUD$
that's without any of the above costs and rip-offs ! I'm guessing 120-130k.
(UK Land Rover Discovery S 55k Aussie price $119k drive away.)
@@edwardfletcher7790 .53GDP to the AUD the figures aren't actually that different for the Disco. Taxes in each state are the big difference.
I miss to see the grenadier in heavy off road terrain like axle twister trails with big ruts and some deepwater wadings.
I alway see pictures and videos like this one here. Hopefully Ineos is testing the Grenadier on such heavy terrain and with full payload
Not so keen on this vehicle but will watch any presentation by our Henry 😊👍
Reminds me of iveco or santana . They where good 4x4s so it's good.
Yeah me too,but i'm not so sure about this one, only time will reveal...
Good to hear that it lives up to expectations offroad. Last summer i was driving behind one of the prototypes uphill on a twisty mountain road on asphalt, and i was surprised at the cornering speeds this was able to safely go. (And there was no lack of accelleration either.) Just the rear braking lights i thought were a bit too small. (the part that lights up, and in bright summer light)
Henry, I know you like watches and I am always trying to see what you have on. I think a second personal watch channel is needed. Would love to see you do watch reviews :)
I hope this one will be available in the EU. We are missing quite some good cars in this segment.
Considering it’s built in France, you should be able to get it quite easily.
I’m sure it’s “good” however those who want a Landy experience will buy an old Landy. Those who want the name will buy a new Landy. Those who use it to work are mostly fleet operators and will buy a Hilux or equivalent because of the dealer support. Those who need a vehicle to really get to where they are going, ie in SA or Aus will buy a Landcruiser. Who’s buying this? I don’t think it bad intact I like it but I’m struggling to see the market. Plus it’s too much I think
Very true, and in the new Defenders defence (pun not intended), a lot of the owners actually take them off road and own the old ones aswell. 🤷🏾♂️
Well put.
'The Landy Experience'?
Bruised right elbow?
The old ones look good, and off road are great. But that's it. They are horrible to drive and uncomfortable. I used to have one.
People in Chelsea?
What about the military....now the Landrover and g wagon wont be build anymore?
I really appreciate the byline identifying Henry as the presenter in the newer videos.
I didnt like this car at first
The white and grey color dont look good on this car to me
But after seeing it covered in mud in that color it looks amazing to me.
And great vid as always Henry
Bravo for the navy jumper - maillot, even - beneath the red harnesses. I see what you did there, Henry.
This car will one day be great.
Going auto is a good call. Much better off road for it.
Decent engine. Three diffs.
But looks are important and there's something about the front grill and bonnet that looks crap. Can't put my finger on it, but it's there.
I love this thing it’s beautiful. Does what I need and I can use it as a work vehicle. I know they said a year or two which is fine by me. I’ll swap my 4Runner
I love this car so much
I want one… so glad they’ve used the bmw engine, it’s a peach 👌🏻
A perfect cross between a G klasse professional /Wulf and something Land Rover always wished to be but just could not get to that Mercedes quality . Even the looks is a superb blend of the 2 .
The problem with "passive" simple dual purpose vehicles, and one that decades of old landrovers have proved, is that they are heavily compromised. Take the suspension, you want it able to carry a heavy load? well that means stiff springs and a terrible ride. You want it to be amazing off road? Well that means soft springs and a rolly-polly road handling (and possibly ending upside down on the infamous moose test..) The new Defender, and in fact pretty much very JLR product since the P38 RR, has used electronics and clever but complicated systems (like air springs and electronic ARBs) to try to provide the widest possible capability across the biggest varriation in terrain.
So today, when the vast majority of miles are driven on paved and graded roads, even by 'serious' off-roaders, will customers paying a significant amount of money for this Grenadier put up with the necessary compromises? That, that is the important question.........
I largely concur with you. I think a good compromise is the 70 series landcruiser. It’s OK on road and great, and more importantly strong, off-road. I think the Ineos is going for the same market, albeit a bit posher.
this is a utlitarian tool.. last i checked there was nothing similar in the landrover lineup for a number of years now..
The answer is yes they will.
Reliability and durability is the two main characteristics it needs to have.
Nice Review Henry I hope it sells like hot cakes
Looks like an awesome vehicle. These would be super popular here in the USA. People would use them for all sorts of off roading adventures. My dream would be to take one of these machines on a trip through the Amazon Jungle down in South America! This and my ROKON motorcycle attached onto the back and 5 old metal jerry cans of fuel mounted on a rack on the back or side! Let the adventures BEGIN!
I have a friend that went to a launch presentation by them here in Seattle.
The majority of would absolutely not use the capabilities. It would be just like the majority of jeeps, broncos, defenders, and G-wagons: tax write off, shopping plaza runner, ego inflator. These cars are amazingly capable and purchased primarily be the uninspired and self absorbed.
I'm sure you won't get far with this car,by a Troller and you have a better suitable car for your dream.
@@marinusmourik9494 a what?
@@LiqdPT a Troller, a Brazilian car company who's building only 4x4. The older ones are technical based on Iveco engines. The new ones are developed together with Ford and are basically a kind of try out for the new Bronco.
Try to find videos on CZcams about what these cars are capable of,you will be surprised.
Reserved one back in January. Fingers crossed it isn’t delayed
You mean you paid to be on a list of people who might be offered a spot on the next list?
Love the vehicle. I think it needs to sit higher though. Not having a traditional cockpit is a little off putting. Reminds me of early EV cars. If the maker is committed to a center console stack then why not put a heads up display on the drivers side? Maybe challenging to do that with angle of this wind shield and the commitment to stay lowtech…….which I love. Great first effort. Bring to Houston and I’m a buyer. Cheers!
Agreed, having dials out of easy view to the driver seems to go against the thought behind this car. It’s a minor complaint, but I hope they change that for the production version.
Head up display is another needless cost. I think they wanted to keep it as affordable as possible.
@@wilfredowen5172 isn't it like $80k?...
Precisely. Head up displays, power windows, power seats are nice. However, Nobody needs them. Cost and weight remember.
The audio is very muffled for the first 1 min or so
That's because he's got a lavaliere microphone on but had to put it under his coat. It will have been either that or wind noise and no Henry for the first minute!
This is what the new Defender should have been. The new Defender should have been called Discovery. The current discovery should have never happened.
Totally agree.
Spot On
You can get a Landover Defender from £45K, so I think this thing will struggle to get traction (no pun intended) in the intended market, certainly in the UK. Off-road capable Chelsea tractors are the popular choice, but they all come with good road manners on tarmac these days. I suspect that old boat will not be a wafting experience on the motorway. They will sell some, but it is going to be a niche market.
Look what it costs to buy a G-Wagen. Thats your market.
JLR are in the foetal position watching this - the Grenadier is everything the 'new' Defender should have been.
Can someone please escort Gerry McGovern from the JLR Head Office????
I have not been so excited for a new car launch in a very, very long time.
From the owner of 5 Land Rovers.
Are they though? I was under the impression that the new Defender was selling very well indeed, other than the fact they're struggling to make them with the chip shortage.
My excitement at the launch of this vehicle is inversly proportional to the disappointment on driving the new Defender. I hope they sell thousands and thousands of them.
From the owner of 7 or 8 Defenders + Series + RR + Disco.
The new “defender” is stuffed with unreliable and superfluous electronic crap. Designed by the iPhone generation.
I wouldn’t take it anywhere that I needed to stay safe and alive. It’s an urban pretender for fake farmers who wear gingham shirts on a Sunday afternoon.
@@turbolevo8703 Priceless.
@@turbolevo8703 That's pretty much my take on it as well. Land Rover have completely missed the mark. Why aren't the Disco/DiscoSport/RRS/FFRR/Velar enough of a luxury line up to negate the need for the Defender to also be a luxury car. New Defender sales will just be cannibalising Disco sales.
No serious 4x4 driver here in Australia would ever risk their lives by going bush in any vehicle powered by a BMW motor.
I would even be doubtful about allowing my wife to take the kids to soccer in one on a Sunday afternoon.
Expect to see a number of black ones in the Hereford area, its a great looking vehicle, sadly the predicted price keeps creeping up. I shall be placing an order.
Yes, the Hereford men wanted a kill switch for all the lighting including brakes, not allowed, but there are blank switch spaces...
Be good for lamping rabbits
Great looking vehicle? Sir please get your eyes tested!
@@TIWNA851 Ha Ha I did on Friday still looks good to me!
I would really love to see this car lifted with bullbar/winch wheeled either by 33 or 35inch tyres.
Not wanting to be critical but i agree with your point on the tyres... they should have got at least a 33 in there somehow.
Land Rover and Mercedes Benz management must be losing there minds wondering who will get fired once these things take a chunk from there market share.
It won't affect either company. Neither Land Rover nor Merc make a vehicle in that segment. The G-Wagon may look similar, but is only bought for looks despite it's capability. And the new Defender is realistically a replacement for the old Discovery and is a luxary segment above the Grenadier. This thing won't set sales records, but anyone who buys one will buy it because it's the perfect vehicle for them and they'll probably love the hell out of them.
@@Kevin-hp5fk On the Defender part I agree to a point. Land rover isn’t the same Land Rover that used to conquer the great unknown.
But Mercedes’ Benz does have a G-Wagen called the professional. It’s a hard core mil spec version of the G. It’s sold in Africa, South America, Australia, Some parts of Europe and Asia. Sold to the public, military, and NGOs.
But Mercedes won’t sell it in North America or most of Europe because they want people to buy the lux version of there G-Wagons.
Hell here in Canada and parts of the states you can find G class professional from the 90s selling for more then a hundred grand. People want them.
With both models having very long waiting lists I don't think JLR or Merc execs are losing any sleep over this. Perhaps this will compete with the Wrangler at the high end but Jeep has strong competition from the Bronco. I think Toyota probably has the most to worry about with the 70 Series Land Cruiser but that's a very niche car only sold in select markets with excellent brand recognition. That being said, Ineos has pretty modest aims for this with 25-30,000 cars a year so I wish them luck.
@@mathewhumvee Thank you I have been wondering about this for quite some time. I think it may be exactly what I want.
@@Kevin-hp5fk I don't think Ineos will stop with the Grenadier.
This with the bmw B58 lol woah 🤙🏾
these will be a sales hit
People who want old design and technology usually buy used cars.
Can't see it personally, those who want the retro pared back off roader will just buy an old defender.
No chance!
Absolutely love the design. Great looking vehicle.......I have been a Landcruiser owner/fan my entire life. Always wanted to stick a toe in the Defender "water" but always heard/read nightmare stories of it being unreliable and a $ pit....bring it to Texas and I might jump in
Can’t wait to see what it can actually do. A Subaru Outback can handle this « off roading ». And the rear suspension attachment points are super vulnerable. Major design flaw.
We already had a few of these here in South Africa but probably for safari testing
Like walking into a workshop and seeing every tool you need... Ohh.😍
This is where Range Rover went wrong. No nonsense true 4x4 with comfort!
I don't think they did tbh. Sure we, who like simple no nonsense 4x4, love this stuff but this is not where the market and money is and that's just the reality.
@@robc6391 Fare cop. Saying which, we have to remember the mk1 Range Rover, was practical easy to wash down, fixed with Phillips screw heads easy to fix, a great machine in the outback. The new Land Rover, if stuck in the outback relies on internet electronic interface to get help! No signals out there & no available parts or even fix on route!
They are always on the right way if sales go well....and they do - especially for the new Defender.

I was in the Australian test drive vehicle for a 10 minute run through Glenworth valley and I was very impressed. The idea that a chemical company can launch a car company just because Sir Jim wanted to is amazing. I like the design choices based on function over form that still create a very comfortable vehicle that should be incredibly capable. Sure there are questions and concerns over reliability and access to service centres but Ineos has done everything within their power to answer those questions and have been full transparent in what they are trying to do. The big question for me is do I want one badly enough to pay roughly $100k AUD?
why? he has burned down all the reasons for doing it and entirely outsourced the entire design, development and production to car companies. Leaving the fact that all he has done is throw money at a dead end.
I think we need to seperate the hype from reality. My Ford Ranger does most off-roading with ease, it’s no rock crawler but does everything I need. Ineos needs to seperate itself from the field as most 4x4’s these days come with rear diff locks as standard and are extremely capable off the showroom floor.
This makes me really miss the old Landy. I think it just looked better in every way even though the Ineos is superior. I get he feeling that Harry thinks it misses the mark the new defender set.
Isn´t this the much anticipated brexitmobile which was in such high regard?
Wonderful video...the tool Nice!. I suppose that why I added a rather good 123 series to my motley collection
Dream machine, probably get one when it's 4th hand. 🙃
Will they make a 2 door version?
Gotta be honest I just don’t feel anything for this car. In theory I should but it just lacks the charm of a defender and although it’s likely a more practical solution I’m just left thinking I’d rather have a defender

Hundred percent agree! I’ll stick to my defender!
@@TIWNA851 what exactly is the charm of the Defender? They are truly woeful, hateful machines, cramped, uncomfortable, unreliable...

Here is the reality off-road a 100K USD 4x4 with unknown relability / no mechanic / shop support / rarer than Bugatti and no spare parts - u show up in car and coffee to hang out with G wagon / custom made old Land Rover defender
couple of things grate : ground clearance looks too low, though it could be a case of small-wheel syndrome. + that steering wheel would have to go, looks like something out of a Smart car - maybe they found some old steering wheels in the old Smart factory?
Love the switchgear, love the split rear door, like some other details, but… no. Not what I was expecting when the Grenadier was announced years ago as a fun, utilitarian, back to basics, British 4x4. Retro-chic, auto-only, Franco-German school bus, more like.
What's not utilitarian about the ZF 8HP? It's a very strong, reliable box. You wouldn't want a manual in an off-roader anyway. The economics of creating a factory from scratch in Wales just didn't stack up.
@@richardharrold9736 I'd have to disagree - a manual is something I would definitely want in an off-roader 👌
@@_TwoBobBit why would anyone want a manual in an off-roader? The auto ensures you are always in the right gear, it's one less thing to think about, it enables integration with hill descent control etc, you're more concentrated on the terrain and less likely to get stuck...
@@richardharrold9736 probably just personal preference really. I was just thinking of when you might need to boot it to get up a tricky bank or get through a bog - the last thing I'd want is an auto box shuffling around and dumping me in the wrong gear at the critical moment. Also I've never driven anything with hill descent control, and have never felt like there's any need for it (again, personal preference - I know many people may be less confident) - I've always selected the appropriate gear, and used my intuition as to whether I need brakes yet...
Looking forward to see the Defender vs the Grenadier in the real world! One question that I would like to ask the boffins at Ineos, why go with a BMW Engine? Why not pair up with Toyota or logically speaking Mercedes-Benz? Anyone know the answer to this?
Isuzu 3.0L 4JJ would make even more sense...
Agree. I would have preferred Iveco or Isuzu? Light commercial engine would have been preferable. This is my only question mark on the whole project.
Likely due to EU emissions laws? Sourcing availability in Europe where the cars will be built?
those bmw engines will not work well with gasoline and diesel of the remote areas
@@yousimtube123 This could be the case but it's not the exact same engine. It has been designed for this vehicle. I hope they have taken into account the conditions it will be used in. We'll need to wait for real world results.
Fuel economy vs new and old Defenders? All the reviews of this that I have seen all love it but never mention fuel economy. Is this the lurking trade-off that Land Rover had to deal with?
Will need to have a cab chassis version before it’s a proper utility vehicle.

Noice! And the wheels look like on a 1970s Puch G (and that is a good thing, it was made at the same plant).
Still to fussy with the details inside and out. And I’ve been saying all along it’s the missing link between old and new defenders. It’s the defender Landrover should have introduced in about 2005
