From INEOS about the Grenadier:
“The idea behind the Grenadier is to develop a 4X4 that will be an uncompromising, no frills, no fuss vehicle
that provides the best-in-class off-road capability, durability and utility. It will support those who depend on
a vehicle as a working tool, wherever they are in the world. INEOS Automotive set out a vision to build the
world’s best utilitarian 4X4, and we have done just that.”
The Grenadier is available as a five-seat Station Wagon, and a
Utility Wagon with the choice of a two-seat or five-seat layout,
depending on market availability. The standard variants of each
model are a blank canvas ready to be configured for the exact
needs of customers. They are built for those needing a stripped
back, no-nonsense workhorse, but still with the comfort, safety,
refinement and standard features that today’s drivers expect.

Why should God get the blame for anything Defender-ish?
The fact it can take a Euro pallet is so underrated 👌
Yup just like my old E91.
Agreed!
More important is to have loadspace without wheelarches getting in the way. Unfortunately that is not the case so you loose a lot of usable loadspace now.
Not understanding why they put they tie down rails in the cargo zone though. Like, engineer the hooks into the pockets either side of the wheel arches. And, being recessed, those rails are going to collect all the crud.
So does an amarok and a ranger.
As a Land Rover man, I'm still intrigued by this car. It combines both the long travel coil springs of the previous Defender as well as the tall progressive bump stops of the early G Wagon. This means it should have quite a ride.
Tony can say what he wants, but this is what the Defender should have been and the defender is what the disco should have been. Finally a tank for the road!
I tend to ignore Tony 90% of the time haha
It's an alternative to a transit etc, British Gas/Rail company's/Electric company's will love them (ignoring the price)
Yes it's what enthusiasts would love but would a genral customer have the same thoughts 🤔
@@seenthroughglass😂😂😂😂
I agree with Tony
Really did not expect to like this video so much, as the normal ones. Sooo, never miss a chance for videos like these! Especially from not so common brands.

It’s no wonder why you have the best car channel on CZcams. Not many people could make a Defender type vehicle video super engaging. Some of those film shots Sam were just sublime.

Which is even more impressive considering they are a new company
Dream vehicle right there! I struggle to spot flaws with it... Sure, its expensive, but it offers something we dont have today anymore! This feels exactly like my fathers old Land Cruiser from the 80's..! If I bought a new car today it would be electric... BUT... if I really needed anything like this, I'd go for this instantly! Its just perfection! And I believe an electric variant is coming of this as well!

The whole video was superb and this British 🇬🇧breed off-roader is a 10/10 in its off-road league eventhough a bit pricey but with big capabilities. Your presenting skills Sam were on point and i coudnt even have done it any better. As always so articulate with some good sense of humor.

People say this is what the new Defender should have been, but the new Defender after three years is still selling all that Land Rover can make, and it's their best selling vehicle.
So Land Rover would say that the new Defender is a success. Most owners would not cope
with the compromises that a more focused off road vehicle has.
Which means we have a choice, which is great.
Grenadier, an off road focused vehicle that's still fairly competent on road.
Defender, on road focused vehicle that's still competent off road. Not that most Defenders will go any further off road than the local horse show.
Absolutely love these things. Like myself a bit old school but brimming with character. Down side.. The price, possibly a little hard to justify, but I'd love one!!

Creep
I think Ineos nailed it with the Grenadier. It’s an old school 4WD SUV with a proven drivetrain. Hell, it even uses an old school steel ignition key. Try finding that feature on another new vehicle. When the apocalypse hits this is the vehicle you want to own.
I have one on order... so excited I occasionally pass wind
Finally the PERFECT REVIEW ! On road .. it has out the icing and cherry on the cake for me. Can’t wait to see it in person ! Thank you for a great overview and great honest commentary. We know it’s most likely awesome off road, it was the on road I’ve been itching to see .. super happy today .. 😉👍
Just got to drive one of these offroad and it is quite impressive
Really interesting seeing this review by someone who by their own admission does not drive off road but who made it absolutely clear that the small sections that were off road in the countryside were the day's highlight. Driving so many miles and to say he felt bonded with the vehicle is a big positive tick. The great driving position and clearly comfort being recognised. Nice one!

Very fair review Sam, I'm a farmer and I'd have a billy basic diesel one tomorrow. BTW, I thought you were old money 😉😀
I hated the new Defender at first but after a few years and a couple of my neighbors having them I absolutely love them and prefer it over the old one. I don't think I would get this over a new Defender.
I always thought this would fill the gap left by the old Defender, in that it'd be a cheaper more robust workhorse than the new Defender. As much as I like the Grenadier I think the fact that it's pretty much price matched with the new Defender may be an issue
Agreed. The market has spoken. The old generation defender was a poor seller worldwide. Land Rover obviously know this and hence why we have the new defender, which has been very successful in terms of sales number. Where does it leave this offspring of an old defender and a g-wagon? I am not sure. I think it’s pretty cool, but not £70,000 cool.
Considering how many new defenders are around, there's not much hope for this car. Worse inside and no better offroad, for the same money
@@theseb1979 The old Defender wouldn't have stuck around for decades if it was a poor seller. Production only ended because it couldn't meet newer safety requirements. No space for curtain air bags or thicker doors to make them better for side impacts, pedestrian protection at the front or any space up there for radar and all the other rubbish they put in cars to 'make them safer'. The previous Defender had a major part in the commercial market alongside the Chelsea tractor group. There were several companies dedicated to modifying Defenders with luxury interiors if they were such poor sellers. Army, police, electrical companies that needed a compact chassis based offroader to mount more specalised equipment on, farms, the lot all used the Defender too. The electrical companies now use Isusu D-Maxs and the like, same with farmers, the army is using their Defenders/Counties then I don't know what, and I don't know what NI's armoured Landy's are going to be replaced by. There are touring industries in various countries with fleets of Land Rover Defenders too, so plenty of other markets with continued demand for them when they stopped building them. The new Defender only replaced the Chelsea tractor crew to sit around London and the like with their G-wagon and other Land Rover stablemates.
I've forgotten what channel I watched it on, but they mentioned seeing a farmer measuring the back of one of these for transporting sheep with lambs. They would be replacing a Ford Ranger, but one of them only lasts them around 5 years. The Grenadier has an anti-corrosion guarantee on the chassis for 12 years, so for that farmer the higher price is justified as it's effectively replacing their next 2 Rangers, at least, so being up to twice the price as a Ranger doesn't concern them for that reason, especially if they depreciate less per year during that ownership. If it's designed to last that long, it could easily go another 3 or more and replace a third Ranger, by which point they're saving a lot of money. The Euro pallet fitting being a marketing line should show who they're aiming for, something everything but the 70 Series Land Cruiser in Australia misses completely. Look at the mk1 Transit. They specifically designed that to fit a common building material while being able to deal with the higher speeds possible on the new motorway network, and look how successful that was. This could be seen as an updated proper Defender platform capable of motorway speeds. This isn't quite bursting into a new market, but it's still filling a gap that has opened up as greed poured everyone else into the easy money of the faux-by-four market where all they want is a several thousand pound body kit on a hatchback platform. Just because the commercial market isn't stupid like the general population who is happy to throw money away on appearance lacking any function doesn't mean there isn't still a steady source of income to be had there. It won't make you the richest person on the planet, but you should be able to make a living off it if you stick with a good basic product. Industry that doesn't deal with the public doesn't change the looks of their products every 3 years or less just to invent the next fashion. If INEOS stick with this design for a decade or two, they'll get a consistent group of returning customers who just want something that works, and by not face-lifting it constantly they will eventually get their money back and be in steady profit. Anyway, the person who put it into production just wanted a capable vehicle on the market again, and had the money from their other businesses to do so, so I don't think they did it for any huge profit, unlike Land Rover, etc.
Major issue
It doesnt have near as much style as a defender. Range Rover has peak car aesthetics.
Best videos are driving the porche Dakar and this video your crushing it
Much appreciated
It was nice to see the GT3 briefly again, near the start - that color continues to grow on me.
I think that you said some things that other reviews have been reluctant to mention. Firstly, it wasn't the manufacturers who made their vehicles 'school run cars' but the consumer. The new Defender, Land Cruiser 300 and Prado and the G-Wagon are all still very capable off-road vehicles. I think that people tend to forget two developments in automotive history that has lessened the need in most of the developed world for an off-road vehicle. One being the expansive network of paved roads and the other the quad bike and its variants. I grew up on a Welsh sheep hill farm and yes, when I was a child many, many moons ago, the Defender was the go to vehicle. These days, a farmer will more likely use a quad bike to get a sick/troubled sheep out of a field and not a 4x4 that churns up the ground and leaves a mess on a muddy field. The truth of the matter is, that the school run crowd are the ones that keep the development of these models on roads whether we like it or lump it. Ineos are going to find out pretty quickly that they will need to cater for this consumer too or the Grenadier will not become a viable going concern. In any case, the SUV price point of the Grenadier and its rugged looks is possibly going to appeal to the celebrity crowd as the Defender has here in Japan and it too will end up being a school run vehicle. The off-road/overlanding market is small. That alone will not generate enough sales. It is also a high-tech vehicle unlike the Land Cruiser 70 series still sold in some markets and getting parts/fixing it for it are going to be less challenging than the new Defender but more difficult than a LC 70 in many parts of the world. On top of all that, the Grenadier is unproven, has no reputation and so far, no sales - only pre-orders!
Another great video from the nicest guy on CZcams. Thanks, Sam!

I absolutely love these. I’m going to be watching these like a hawk on the second hand market. If the market doesn’t take too kindly to the Grenadier, then these could be a bargain in 3-4yrs.

gM FROM JAMAICA YOU ARE A REAL REVIEWER THAT DOOR SOUNDS LIKE G WAGON I LIKE HOW U TEST THE DOOR SOUND SIR KOOOOOL
Driven the 3L petrol on road.....very sluggish take-off from stand-still. Quiet, smooth, comfortable. The footrest that intrudes into the footwell isn't noticeable on short runs but might be annoying on longer ones....the solution would be to make the accelerator and brake pedals longer and move seat back a bit. Speedo position not a problem. Visibility is good....even out of rear window with the split and tyre....wing mirrors give good vision. There is a lack of feel from the steering but there's no problem actually turning...but you only know you're turning when you actually see the front going round. The 'play' isn't a problem, can't say it was really noticeable and the slow return to centre isn't either as personally I don't leave it to the vehicle to do that.
Price is comparable to other vehicles of similar nature...it has very good build quality and judging by reviews excellent off-road capability...with the benefit that having far less electronics more fixable in the field compared to the new Defender for example.
10 month+ wait though unless get a cancelled order....spec and price as is of course.

I saw them in Silverdale a couple of weeks ago crossing Morecambe Bay. Love one and would swap my L322 Range Rover for one….if they were about 40k. I think there’s a market for a basic utilitarian motor with modern running gear that would rival the pickups. At north of £50k starting price, £0 pm on my old L322 V8 is very attractive in comparison.
Shame as I think they’ve missed a trick here as did the new Defender.

Looks fantastic, but for me this is very much a bespoke option. This has to be a specific purchase. A tool that's needed. Much the same way as a farmer buys a plough. I've always wanted a big enough lawn to justify a ride on mower. Now I want a property with a long unmade drive.

Who the hell wastes that much time until actual review
Great review, Sam! You capture the unease around what is a pretty exciting new vechile perfectly. At the price, the offroad ability isn't enough. In the UK, most people (even enthusiasts and people who genuinely need it) will be on the black stuff a significant amount of the time. Therefore, the 'cool factor' or use case needs to be significant to want one and live with the quirks as a daily
There is a huge world out there. The tiny UK cannot ever be a benchmark. Having said that, even the W463 Geländewagen can and do go places here in Africa. I think the Grenadier is closer to that than an old Defender.
These are gona take off, this is what the defender should have been but that’s now to polished. Cheaper too if you get into a base. 60k gets you nothing nowadays anyway

Great video, yet again! Superb!
Been following this for a while. The main caveat I have is the front appears a bit pinched to my eyes, don't know how else to describe it. Servicing doesn't bother me as I used to drive to another country for my previous car and can easily fix multiple issues myself.
It would be a lovely car to drive, I would be particularly interested to see how it behaves at motorway speeds and also towing. A lot of people keep commenting about the old Defender. I wonder how many of those have driven one. The old Defender is horrid to drive on paved roads...I have one. It is not cheap to run either... of course you can run it on a shoestring budget, but proper maintenance isn't cheap. I am fortunate to also have a new Defender as well and Land Rover have genuinely hit the nail on the head... superiorly comfortable, safe and exceptional at towing. I would love to try the Grenadier at some point, looks very capable.
Here in 🇿🇦, I really used Tracks4Africa to find dirt roads. My Defender Puma was unhappy on tarmac. The older Diesel series Landy was worse, despite an overdrive gear. They both thrived in the rough.
I have a feeling these will hold their value better than other £70k utility vehicles. Time will tell..
Land Rover missed a trick.. big time.. the new LR Defender is not an evolution of the original Defender .. yes, I know it's more capable... but like you say Sam, the Grenadier is focussed.. in the same way the old Defender was.. Had I not modified my own 110 Defender to the same spec as mr JWW's, but without the jacked up suspension and big wheels, I could've easily seen myself ordering a Grenadier in a heartbeat. The Ineos Grenadier shares something else quite unique with the old Defender... It's a classless car.. You can't pigeon hole anyone who drives one. The only point I don't agree on is price.. having looked at one closely in the flesh last Friday in Edinburgh, I think it's an absolute bargain for what you get. All personal of course! Great video!!
Biggest disappointment is the Instrument cluster, not were you can see it safely, in front of the driver. Perhaps a HUD will be great as a option, aftermarket option.
It’s only 53k when you look at it. Remove the vat
It's the fusion of a G wagon and Defender
I prefer the looks of the new defender both inside and out, cant see this doing as good as the new defender, to me the Ineos its more like a purpose built vehicle for a mountain rescue team then the average person
Was really hoping for the off-road bit.
Would be good to see Truffle and the GT3 together. Also, missing 360 content.
Too many cars to drive nowadays haha. Lots of plans for all three this year though!
Nice vid, Sam. Being a new manufacturer, at £70k the only chance it has is, if at least a 7 year warranty offered. If so, buy it for farm or adventure, and keep it 10 years plus. Presumably, part of their initial brief was to beat Land Rover build quality?
Durability is one of their key objectives ;)
They offer 12 years warranty against corrosion... but of course the mechanical warranty would be more interesting.
The utility version starts at 58k and for commercial use you can get the taxes off... I think it could make sense if they can build a dealer network with maintenance service. But cooperations will be difficult since the mechanics are such a mixture of different brands.
Should Last 30 years for the money they want for it
70k! I was expecting 40 max fully specd
🤣🤣🤦🤦
Good luck with a BMW engine rich person utility vehicle
it will be an excellent 2nd hand car
Like it, looks very cool and has niche appeal, but just can’t see there being enough of a market for it to be worth making long term.

@@seenthroughglass that's very interesting Sam, it was Johnny (late brake show channel) that highlighted it. I will look forward to trying one myself.
@@sweetfreedomGBI’m about 6ft tall and got to sit in one here in Australia. I can confirm that the RHD driving position is ergonomically a disaster for me! My left leg was jacked up and pinned between the wheel and centre dash due to the “foot rest”. Brake pedal and accelerator are skewed to the right with an awkward stretch to the accelerator pedal.
