It’s always made sense to me. When you tilt the menu, you realize the outer characters are literally on a lower level. You’ll notice that these characters are all clones that are positioned right next to the character that they are based on. This idea shows the clones as an extension of the characters they’re based on in the menu itself.
I remember seeing a video that featured unused animation on the character select screen where those six characters were supposed to slide out from under the Smashers they're based on...!

If Alax does go the Sonic route, it's either gonna be Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic Adventure 2. He's already made an entire video talking about SA2 and expressed it as the best 3D Sonic game, and in the Genesis Sonic ranking video, he said S3&K is among his favorite games of all time.

@@Junior13113 I personally prefer SA1 over SA2. Yes, Sonic 3&K is the best 2D, Mania is good and all but it's basically Sonic Generations in 2D (almost all levels are basically rehashes of the genesis games minus 4 original levels).

Incredible video. I'm so glad you made this. So fun fact, the reasons the clones were set a part from the others on the CSS is originally they were going to slide out from underneath the characters they cloned. The animation can still be played via a Gecko code. Also with unlocking Mewtwo, if you use four controllers and play Lighting Melee special mode, you can unlock Mewtwo in just 4 hours. I love how the N64 and SNES era is what inspired the art direction and movesets of these characters. This game is a masterpiece. It's without a doubt the magnum opus of the Smash series. It's incredible both as a casual game, and as a competitive game. The opening cinematic for Melee is by far the best. It was an amazing introduction to many series I didn't know about, just like your experience. What a great watch. Thank you.

Yeah a lot of people forget that. It followed the trend of each Nintendo home console selling less and less.
Snes sold less than nes, n64 sold less than Snes, GameCube sold less then n64.
Wii broke the trend, but then wiiu sold less then even the GameCube.
22 million units sold is not failing miserably. See how many units Dreamcast sold, or the Saturn, or the Virtual Boy, or the Wonder Swan, etc

The fact that you are comparing the gamecube to other failures speak volumes. The GameCube sold 22m units, while Nintendo predicted 50m units. The GameCube followed curse of each Nintendo home console selling less and less, with the GameCube selling worse then the n64, which already lost to the ps1. GameCube was in 3rd place.
It was by all means, a failure. Great console, but failed.

I know what a magnum Opus is, defined as the most important work of a studio or series ect, not always the best, but the most important. Before i click the play button, what I believe is that the magum opus of smash for general audiences may have been brawl, since that one pioneered how the games would be played in the future, what reveals were like, and all. but I believe the unintentional magnum opus of the platform fighter genre is melee for sure. Does that make sense?
Also, a magnum opus is usually associated with a creator ("John Smith's magnum opus") and Sakurai himself doesn't think that Melee is that great of a game

Melee just like Smash 64 are fair, it all started with Brawl retroactively doing revisionism about Smash, that's why tripping was added and other stuff.
Maybe Nintendo executives forced Sakurai to make a dumb Smash gameplay like Brawl had for the sake of the extremely family or kid friendly nature of the Wii/Wii U era of Nintendo, so that explains the RNG like tripping, the floaty characters and a lot of other nonsense because they don't believe the fact that skill is important in a fighting game...
Fortunately, that backfired and now we have Ultimate, the best selling fighting game of all time.

I've never been super into fighting games (mostly cuz I'm just bad at them), but I still have fond memories of playing both melee and brawl with my brother. Like you had said, some of the franchises these characters come from may not have continued to exist if it wasn't for melee. It's like the ultimate marketing campaign. It introduced me, as it did you and many many others, to characters and games we had never heard of before. I think that's really amazing

Nah it terms of content, brawl was walking. Single player especially.
Smash 64 was great at the time but it felt like a prototype of the smash formula we have now. Melee set the standard for the other games to follow and it hasn’t really evolved all that much since then.

4:14 you know this happened to me too. When i tried to replay melee, gamecube wouldnt read the disc.
I figured out that the wii would run it but not the gamecube so i didnt have to buy a new copy.

In the box where it shows each trophy's game origin, the Animal Crossing & Pikmin characters was labeled "Future Release" since those games probably wasn't fully announced or released at the time of Melee's development

If I can introduce someone to the game, I don't care how they play it. As long as they enjoy their time with it.

They will never remake Melee just like they will never remake Mario Kart Wii: they'll just make the next entry in the series instead
Also, if they remastered Melee, they'd probably fix the unintended glitches and mechanics and then nobody would be happy with it

@@lorenzoniccoli99ln Wavedashing is not a glitch since it's a product of directional airdodge just like Ultimate also has it, same as L-cancelling because it's intentional just like in Smash 64.
Fixed bugs would be like yoyo glitch, less phantom hits, entry name (playing as Master Hand), Game&Watch's shield, spotdodge, the lack of L-cancelling for aerials, Roy's hitboxes...
A rerelease of Melee can actually improve the character balance, specially Bowser and Pichu less crappy, PAL Melee has less glitches than the NTSC but i disliked it because they removed Marth's down-air spike (goodbye Ken Combo).

That was the last time I went to a tournament I think, It wasn't for me past then and even then i wasn't that good.
