- Mario is 35 years old! Yet, a lot of what lent itself to Mario’s success has been forgotten. Today, we take a trip to the 1980s to see the origins of Mario and Shigeru Miyamoto and to find out how Mario's first game defined his untouchable success.

How is this comment older than the video?
Soup before it got cold.
You know what's ironic? People love to hate on Miyamoto for his "distaste" for story in video games, and while I'm guilty of once being like that myself, you have to give the guy credit for what he did in the original SMB. Back then, games had pretty much no story, but Miyamoto thought that even a basic "Hero rescues Princess from Dragon" scenario would be a powerful tool in motivating the player. In other words, you aren't just playing because it's a game, you're playing because you have stakes in the matter; you control Mario to help him reach his goal.
Miyamoto likes simple stories in games, not complex or deep ones. I personally prefer the latter type, but I'll take a game with minimal story over one without any at all.
Yeah but I miss the old Miyamoto. I don't like how he's an anti-story guy nowadays. Always remember that Paper Mario Sticker Star would have been TTYD 2 but Miyamoto put a stop to that and said that a good story wasn't even necessary. How many like Sticker Star over TTYD again?
@@4xzx4 Yeah not alot of people do, myself included. Not really a good game IMO.
@@4xzx4
It’s important to note that Miyamoto didn’t “put a stop” to anything, aside from Galaxy 2’s extended narrative. In the case of Paper Mario, he simply said that Sticker Star’s prototype looked far too much like TTYD when he was approached for input.
He gave his two cents, and that’s entirely fair. He didn’t seize control. An interview in 2019 with AlphaDream, creators of Mario & Luigi, indicated that Miyamoto actually was an active proponent of wackier stories in tertiary, non-action Mario games. He isn’t wrong to say that “Mario games don’t need story”, but he didn’t actively discourage them. At least, that wasn’t likely his intention.
@@TiStardust Well, you're kinda wrong. Look up the interview about Sticker Star's development and you'll actually see that Miyamoto became angry at the team for making the new Paper Mario like TTYD and thus forced them to do it just like we got: Paper Mario Sticker Star.
@@4xzx4 except that's not true, myamoto even said he thought sticker star was a bit boring
When he said what the next one will be, I instantly assumed shrek
Same!
still i wonder what it will be
I mean, him watching Shrek on tv, and layers thing really gives me Shrek vibes too. And it really fits the magnum opus theme. But this might just be me being a hopelessly overambitious Shrek fan.
@@endre7984 i mean, he never said that the series would have been exclusive to videogames, soooo
I mean he mentioned layers...

This channel reminds me why i do what i do. Thank you. I just watched these two magnum opus videos back to back, and they were the best content i’ve seen on youtube for a long time, honestly since your mario sunshine video. Genuinely good, passionate content these days on youtube is hard to come by. Keep up the good work and before you know it you’ll have a million subscribers
*cries in Canadian*
Thank you. I'm really really putting a lot into this series of videos because I care a lot about the topics. I'm excited to get to some later episodes done. Truthfully a series like this won't be great for the algorithm in my experience, but after considering everything I really just wanna talk about these things more than anything. Your comment is very much appreciated :)
I'm surprised you already didn't have it

“Time is a fake human construct.”
He’s technically not wrong. How we perceive time is a human construct.
Everything is a construct of u are pretentious enough!
Cool. Stfu
Fletcher Reed I mean everything is technically a human concept
No, that's not it, it's not about time perception(which we share with countless species regardless). Months, days, hours, they are the constructs. It's not like they didn't technically exist as they're measures of time(and based on astrals), but the importance we grant them is entirely man-made and artificial.
If I tell you your mother's been alive for 4 dogs, you'll tell me "who cares", right? Well, exactly.
Yeah is a constuct, but If you dare to express opinions against the scientific way of viewing the reality then all the gremlins come out of their caves and start to burn you alive.
I think a popular CZcamsr named Schaffrillas Productions defined Magnum Opus the best: "A Magnum Opus may not be your best work, but is is your most important one."
As the only Pikmin fan in this room, I'll salute and congratulate you for such an amazing masterpiece of a video, as the wood burns with you tied up on it and Garden of Hope (Or Environmental Noises, I am a nice guy and will let you choose which one you prefer to listen to while the flames rises) plays in the background.
Jokes aside nice video! I totally agree that Mario Bros. Is more of his Magnum Opus, Pikmin still has ways to go in order to become that, we'll have to wait for Pikmin 4 to find out *Enters Cryostasis until 2121*
your editing skills are fire man... the pixel art animations too, it fits perfectly with the visual style.
thank you sir !

Alternate title: How gaming was born by a solar eclipse.
Lmao
The Magnum Opus that saved the gaming industry and would change how things for the longest time.
It’s incredible how such a simple game saved the entire gaming industry from the brink of collapse in the US
It wasn’t sinple then
People always say that but I think that's mostly just in the West. I doubt the Japanese were buying ET and then being disappointed. Plus with no consoles arcades become more popular and consoles would have eventually come back cause it's the arcade but at home even if only niche.
@@ZLunas I'd probably say R.O.B. is more of like a positive trojan horse more so than a key reason why the NES basically resurrected console gaming in North America. He was just there to pretend to be a toy since marketing the NES as a game system would've been suicide at the time.
Imagine living in 2021 and still thinking the 1983 gaming crash affected anywhere but North America.
You don’t have to be a jerk about it
I have a Colecovision, DK does NOT look like that.
You should make a video: Cole Johnson's Vision of the Colecovision
The colecovision port of DK is fun.
@@maximumeffort2729 there's actually a reason behind all of this. Coleco had the IP to make Donkey Kong for home consoles. and they decided to do something scummy. they started out by making it a coleco exclusive, and then one year later they had an even more devious idea, release it on the other consoles but make them completely inferior to make people think that they don't have the superior console and to get a Colecovision for the full exprience. and to put a cherry on the cake, they refused to make an Atari 5200 version because they full well known that they would be caught out on this little scheme. and the most rediculous part is that Coleco totally got away with it! bearly anybody knows about the story and they still don't suspect anything and STILL think that the Coleco was a more capable console rather than it just being gimped.

As someone aspiring to one day make my own game from the ground up, learning Miyamoto was 33 when Super Mario Bros. came out was honestly the most relief I think I've felt in my entire life.
Alax would you please make a full remix of the song Otherside used in the Evolution of Mario video I’m a huge fan of the channel
Discovering this channel was the best thing that happened to me in 2020
For reference, Cat's theme starts at 19:47
Oh alax, always with those silly Alax fan service references.
It’s always a miracle when a Robot, A Dog and this games main character stand up with the NES to help save Video Games as a whole.
This was great Alax! Thanks for continuing to put out quality videos while pushing a unique presentation style. It does not go unappreciated or unnoticed!
Time is a social construct, lol I fuck with cats vision.
Might want to improve your grammar on this since my first interpretation was "I like to mess with cats eyesight"

Happy new year! Can't wait for more content as the year continues
Hey, I’m here kinda early, happy new year to one of my favorite content creators!!!!!
Scott the Woz has made a new video?
that was the 1st 4th wall break
we had the same experience with the warp zones right down to the stopping of playing at 8-1
eventually i pulled through tho
still havent played all Mario 1s levels
Love your Magnum Opus vids looking forward for the next
The OG SMB has this weird charm that always makes me nostalgic for how simple video games used to be. I could never think about classic NES games without this one coming into the picture.
This series is so cool. Good video as always
Amazing video as always!
RelaxAlax' Magnum Opus to me is the video game music video. However alot of the current videos are turning into nicely packed documentarys which i love.
keep doing these bro they are amazing
I really like these magnum opus videos, keep it up man
Wow. Knowing this story already, its still an amazing video. Well done alex
Welcome back Alax and Happy New Year!
It’s so cool how you re use assets in different creative ways.
This is the best youtube channel period the love and research that this man has and does it's insane
HAPPY 2021 Alax and everyone who reads this comment.
I am loving these videos.
Man I these first two vids were fantastic I can’t wait to see more of this series unfold
Good to see you again Alax! I mean ofc on the main channel, but hey. It was worth the wait
20:31 oh my gosh he’s finally gonna talk about onions!!
Your delivery seems to be somewhat back up to snuff good to know you’re feeling better, think I’ve seen about every relax episode that isn’t the smash characters ones multiple times over and I mean that, I just wanted to let you know man I fucking love these and it was hard to watch you trug along when you got back into making videos again. Glad you’re back at it

"something with a few more layers". SHREK!?
Loved the balloon fight music at the end
This is definitely the best timeline if Alax is making these great of videos and hopefully still happy with himself!
i cant believe it...a relaxalax video with no persona reference shoehorned in?!?!?! 2021 is off to an amazing start!
8:30 Damn! Miyamoto had those pretty locks back in the 70's!?
I knew I was going to like your channel as soon as I watch that video
Brother, this is one of the best shows on CZcams.

My sides fell apart at "A Peach Rosé."

Happy New Year Alax :>
Happy New Year! And great video series! I hope Sonic Adventure 2 gets a magnum opus video. When it comes to Sonic games, that was the creme of the crop!
Everyone gangsta till Alax "Scott The Woz"-zifies one of his thumbnails.
Me not paying attention to the video and being angry that Alax doesn't know the B button exists.
Wait a minute, WHAT THE HELL IS THE "B" BUTTON! WHAT DOES IT DO! Omfg, I can't believe I didn't notice it!

Starting the year i see. Nice!
I love this series mang
Keep on making content Alax, no one does it like you
Mario was originally supposed to shoot enemies with a gun on horseback.
That’s just yoshis safari
Alex with another classic
Happy new year, Alax!
Love the new series 👍
Your content is so special
14:46 Cat definitely didn't see that one coming.
I love this series, excited to see more. Maybe Majoras mask and Sonic the Hedgehog will be next
I'd also love to see Pokemon Platinum even though Alax would never cover it
20:32 very subtle alax. Very subtle.
Ok now you have to beat the lost levels
Actually, I've never thought about it but you're right, 1-2 is actually the most important factor in sending Mario straight to eternity. The song, the 4th wall break... That's why they always repeat that theme in any 2d mario game.
I am really enjoying this series
Happy New Year!
These are beautiful Alax! Do something for the 25th anniversary of smash later
Alax: *reviews Mario 1*
Wilstuff: “finally, a worthy opponent!”
Happy new year, yo!

SHREK 2 THE GAME REVIEW BABYYYY LET'S GOOOOOO
"I still got time" when finding Miyamoto was 33
I did that a few weeks ago
am 34 though :(
dude it has been so long since I have seen you
first time I played this was on a clear plastic n’ purple gameboy color (deluxe) when I was 5. But it was a hand-me-down and the previous owner had a save point already in the game…on world 8-3. That was my first Mario level I ever played and I died so many times that I gave up myself. Wasn’t until later that I found out that you could restart and there were 7 other worlds. A year later on a family trip right before bed, with the squiggly gameboy light on, I got back to world 8-3 without using any warps, beat that, then beat the 8-4 in the same sitting. Was hooked from there (:
Great video! Although i thought Mario 64 was Miyamoto’s “Magnum Opus” it was his last game as a developer and it defined the 3D genre. Id even say Mario 3 set the standards for snes/genesis 16 bit games as a NES game.. Cant wait for the next Magnum Opus!
You know now that this series is a thing, I would love to see a Magnum Opus on Doom or Doom II. It would be really cool to see Alax talk about ttheir success and impact it had on the modding community and the gaming industry as a whole
1:41 pacman fever sound effect oh wow
In my first apartment I made world 1-1 down my hallway wall.😂
Eyyyyy, it is a series
Hey I hate to be one of those guys but one little thing...
At 16:06, the music is actually made from four channels, as there are two square (or "pulse") channels available! There's also a fifth channel for playing really low quality samples, but they didn't use that one yet in Super Mario Bros. They did use it in Super Mario Bros. 3 for stuff like the timpani drums, though!
BE THAT GUY! You're correct I was going to do a whole long section but it added so much time to the video. In short - the sound chip could be a whole video itself, and I very much told a slightly wrong half assed version of it's functionalities. It was so cool what they did with it!
Nice foreshadowing joke at the end Alax!
So I did a little googling and it looks like the "90% of people can't beat Mario 1-1" actually comes from a satire article. It's not quite that bad.
2:15 I don't remember what was my concrete first console/handheld game, just a bulk of the first handful that I owned for my first three gaming consoles… The first I remember owning were like, a couple hand-me-down SNES games like Super Mario World, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Gradius III, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Kart, Mario Paint, and Monopoly.
Then I had the Gamecube, with games like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Kirby Air Ride, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Luigi's Mansion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Heroes, and of course, Super Smash Bros. Melee.
'Round that same time frame I got a Game Boy Advance SP, though I didn't get a GBA-native game until around the time Chicken Little hit theaters. Before that, I had Yoshi's Cookie, Aladdin, and Dr. Mario, all Game Boy originals. I do specifically remember, my first GBA game was Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. It was fun, I thought.
so this whole "magnum opus" thing is really becoming a series, huh
I love this new series
Bro I'm half the age of this game, and it was still the first game I ever played
On the breadbox no less
