I’m glad you guys did this movie. I’ve never seen anyone else react to it, which is surprising. I appreciated your words at the end about people moving on to different things in their lives. At 52 I’ve seen it happen quite a few times.
Drew loves this movie. Yeah life is funny, you don't know where it's going to take you, but you grow from every situation. We are glad you loved this reaction. We will pin this comment.
Susan, exactly. One of the best 80s films and no one has it. But hopefully like w/ other films it'll catch fire with others.
We hope so... it's a great movie
@@SomethingCinema Has Drew read it as well? It's a Stephen King short story/novella called The Body - maybe a good birthday present some day ;) The version I have is in a collection called Different Seasons and three of the four stories in it are, in my opinion, mini masterpieces AND have been adapted into films: The Stand, Apt Pupil and Shawshank Redemption. 👍 (The fourth one maybe has too, I'm not sure.)
No he hasn't but we all need to check it out
RIP River Phoenix
RIP
A legend
Definitely
RIP🙏🏿❤️

Gordie grew up to be a writer Wheaton is a well known blogger
Vern had a normal life wife and kids like O’Connell
Teddy couldn’t get past his childhood trauma to find success as an adult like Feldman
Chris dies at a public place like Phoenix and is still the only one who has died
The end of the movie predicts what happened to each kid in IRL as Adults
.... That makes the movie even more sad
Wrong! Vern and Teddy die in the book. Just not Mentioned in the film to make Chris's death more impactful. Teddy dies in a car accident and Vern dies in a house fire.
@@MrParkerman6 yes that's why I compared it to the MOVIE not the book
Awww
@@MrParkerman6 glad Teddy didn't die in a fire
This movie has a special place in my heart, makes me miss childhood
It’s a classic! Thanks for watching!
My favourite movie of all time second and equally is The Breakfast Club. I got a dog a week ago and name him Lachance
That's another good 1
Same I love this movie
It's really good
Will Wheaton once said that when they were filming the scene where Chris lays out a hypothetical truth about the milk money incident to Gordy, River Phoenix was having trouble with making the performance convincing, so the director just told him to think about a time or imagine time where someone has wronged him. Apparently River was in genuine tears by the end of it, don't remember if that was after they shot the scene or after his talk when he followed that exercise. Nothing's ever been confirmed about whether or not something happened to him when his family was in that cult when he was a kid, but people have often suspected that.....all we know is that his parents realised how wrong a lot of the teachings of the cult was so they left with all five of their kids, we're pretty sure that Joaquin, Liberty and Summer at least were too young at the time to have anything happen to them if anything happened to any of the kids.
Wow that is crazy... great fun fact... really sad though.
@@SomethingCinema very, though like I said we don't know what actually happened, and we only have Wheaton's word for it. Still, it sounds real, feels real as well.
Yeah that sounds real and the performance was great so it feels real.
River Phoenix was an amazing talent, who left us far too soon.
Far too soon
Such a great film. Still impresses the hell out of you no matter how many times you watch it. The ending when they're all quiet, having been changed by their experience and to come back seeing the whole town differently is my favorite part. You guys should react to Running On Empty if you haven't already seen it. It's another film that River Phoenix was spectacular in - he got an Oscar nomination for it.
That's one of the best parts of the film... Great movie. We will also add Running On Empty to the list. Thanks for watching our video.
Running On Empty, that gets me every time.
We have to watch it then.
Wow, i think you are the first to upload reaction to this classic.
We are glad we are the 1st and we are glad you enjoyed it. Great movie
Back then kids didn't have video games, cell phones, computers always attached to them. We went outside and played most of our parents didn't want us inside unless we had chores to do😂.
Those were the good ol days! What a time to be alive!
This is a special movie for me because of the way I connected with it. I saw it in the theater when it came out with 2 of my best friends. We were the exact same age as the kids in the movie, 12 and getting ready to start junior high. Not only that, but my one friend looked exactly like Vern, I mean exactly, down to the haircut and red cheeks.
That's really cool... that must have been a great moment for you and your friends to see that movie.
I grew up loving this film as a kid and the older I get the more I relate to it. Probably my favourite film of all time
It’s such a classic!
RIP River P. I loved this movie as a teen.
RIP... yeah this movie is great.
Jerry O’Connell lost the weight when he grew up. He went on to be in the science Fiction series, Slider where he and others travel from parallel Earth to Earth. He and his brother were on until Sci-fi channel picked it up. Then they left the show. The show stayed on until one more season than it was canceled
Yeah he did lose the weight once he got older.
@@SomethingCinema And married Rebecca Romijn
I KNOW!!
Not a Horror movie but based on a non-Horror novel by Stephen King.
Great fact... we love that
The Body, in that four seasons themed book of his made up of four novellas. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and Apt Pupil were also made into movies. I don't think The Breathing Method would make a very good movie, but it's a good story (with a creepy vibe). They all are -- if you like books, you should check them out. The movies they made are pretty good too.
Definitely have to check them out
@@SomethingCinema Yes, as Shirlee Hicks, above, commented - NOT a novel, but a novella*, from the brilliant book of four ( 4 ) novellas "Different Seasons" ( published by Viking Press, 1982 ) by famed, ( mainly horror fiction, ) writer Stephen King. In the book ( NOT the movie adaptations ) each story had a season-of-the-year themed subtitle, reflecting the changes of each season of the year ( hence the overall title of the book. )
They were: "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" ( subtitle = "Hope Springs Eternal" ) - adapted as a movie as: 'The Shawshank Redemption' ( 1994, )
"Apt Pupil" ( subtitle = "Summer of Corruption" ) - adapted as a movie as: 'Apt Pupil' ( 1998, )
"The Body" ( subtitle = "Fall from Innocence" ) - adapted as a movie as - 'Stand By Me' ( 1986, movie you are reacting to NOW, )
"The Breathing Method" ( subtitle = "A Winter's Tale" ) - NOT adapted as a movie, YET.
*novella = story longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel.
Oh ok... learn something new everyday... appreciate the knowledge... thank you.
Y’all need to see Vern all grown up. Check out Jerry O’Connell. He had a serious glow up🤣
Right! Dallas said he looked familiar but couldn’t figure out where she’d seen him before. We looked up his IMBD and realized he was in a lot of movies! He also was in Scream 2 and we just watched that.
@@SomethingCinema he was also in the movie calender girl .....deff an awesome movie
We might have to check that out
To put things into perspective about free time in the summer before 1980.
I was these kids age in the late 70's. My friends and I spent all the time outside.
Riding bikes, playing games, goofing off. From the time we got up to when it was dark enough for our parents to call us home.
We were allowed to roam on a two block area. Basically within earshot of someone yelling for us.
Once video games came out this kind of stuff slowly stopped happening.
Yeah kids don't go outside and play anymore... it's really sad
I grew up in the 60's and 70's. I was sent outside after breakfast, and was rarely seen until supper time. Our group of neighborhood kids took turns having lunch at different houses. Great time to grow up.
*Drew Talking* .. Great times. Growing up I was never inside, and when I was, we always had all my friends in the house too... it was fun
Ahh River Phoenix Lost but never forgotten
Exactly... RIP
His last film, Sneakers is really really fun, and has an amazing cast. it still holds up
We might have to check that out too
R.I.P River Phoenix. Gone far too early ❤
He would’ve done great things! RIP.
Oh, and if you want to see something really crazy regarding what kids used to do to pass time, check out American Graffiti. It even stars Richard Dreyfuss, the guy who played grown up Gordy and narrated this movie.
It's captures what a typical weekend night for older teens was like in the late 50's/60's. Basically just cruising in their cars up and down the strip. It takes place in 1962, but the movie was made in 1972, and has non stop 50's/ early 60's rock n roll through the whole film.
George Lucas wrote and directed it based on his experiences as a teen cruiser. It was his first hit movie and it allowed him to get backing to make Star Wars.
Oh that's a really good fun fact... we will add that to the list.
@@SomethingCinema please watch The Lost Boys(1987) it's a teen vampire movie directed by Joel Schumacher who recently died this year at the age of 80.
RoboCop(1987) it's my favorite Science Fiction movie of the 80s. It's a social satire & has a lot of action. It's notoriously extremely violent. It's directed by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven.
License To Kill(1989) it's my favorite James Bond of the 80s. It's one of the darkest stories for James Bond & was polarizing for audiences at the time that James Bond films went on hiatus until 1995 when Goldeneye came out & introduced the world to Pirece Brosnan as the James of the 90s.
Please react to them. You won't regret it.
Thanks. We will add that to the list
Also stars Ron Howard, Paul LeMat and Harrison Ford... and Suzanne Somers is Dreyfuss' character's dream girl.
Good to know... thank you
The girl on the right had the best reactions. Especially at 28:52
Chris: "Who told you that you had a fat one Gordy?"
Girl: "The leech" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂... glad you enjoyed it
Actor that played "Chris" is the greatest late actor River Phoenix who passed away at a young age and he was the brother of great actor Joaquin Phoenix.
Yeah we know smh
This is actually a short story from Stephen King called " The Body ". He based some of it on his years as a kid .
Ok that's a great fun fact... love that
Another short story in that same book was shawshank redemption. Another great movie people don't realize was stephen king . The green mile too.
We need to watch that movie too
My all time favourite. Funny story-while filming the trestle scene, Rob Reiner was getting so annoyed because the kids weren’t acting scared enough. So he instead of trying to direct them, he ended up losing his cool and yelling at them and it ended up horrifying them. So the tears you see on Vern’s face are genuine lol
Great fun fact... love it.
This is SUCH a good movie. ♥️ Loved the reaction too!
It’s a classic! We appreciate you watching and glad you enjoyed our reaction. 💕
That’s one of my favorite movies
It’s so good... and sad
I remember when this movie came out I went to see it twice the same day. It wasn't till some time later that I found out that it was a Stephen King short story. The Body.
Yeah that's really crazy

You said it best... if you had a childhood full of adventures, sleepovers, playing outside and hanging with friends, you miss it... there's nothing like it
a great movie that never gets old. more people need to react to this movie.
We were very surprised when people said no one else reacted to this movie... it's a classic.
Literally my favorite movie ever
It's so good
yeah i did the same thing as those kids, we took long trips down the tracks to fish though, no dead bodies but dead animals and creepy people and older bullies with knives, very similar situations, back in the late 80's-90's, always outside till dark
It was a different time for sure... great times
as a 14 year old rn i wish i could go with friends and go on long walks and adventure but sadly i cant :((((

*Drew Talking* ..This movie always makes me miss my friends growing up
Have you guys seen 'My Own Private Idaho' yet? That's one of River Phoenix's best known performances.
I'd argue Stand By Me was his best-known, but My Own Private Idaho is probably underrated, because of the themes the film deals with...
No we haven't seen that... so we have to add it to the list
@@SomethingCinema If gay/bi themes don't freak you out, you might also check out Brokeback Mountain (Heath L. and Jake G.), Total Eclipse (Leo DiCaprio), Johns (Lukas Haas), Twist (Nick Stahl), Bully (Brad Renfro and Nick Stahl)... I think a lot of actors like to play challenging roles, for the chance to flex their acting muscles, and all of these films show a range you might otherwise not expect.
Leo is Drew favorite actor... yeah those roles were very tough to play but they did a great job in them
My favourite film of all time. So glad ye reacted to it. Great video again. And yeah one of the most powerful aspects is how you lose contact with many friends during your life, especially from childhood. You go down different paths and the separation happens without realising.
Such a sad thought when you think about it... everyone you grew up with and had great memories with might not be your friend in 3 years smh
This movie is so amazing thank u for reacting to it👍🏾❤️
It is so good... Thank you for watching it
My friends and I watched this all the time. I am 29 now but the crazy thing is that all of the “adult” stuff they talked about whether it was an abusive home or other struggles we would talk about them and we were 11-12 we all talked about until we would get distracted by kid things so that for just a little bit we were alright
This was such a good movie
Little known fact:
John Singleton based his first movie, Boyz N The Hood off of the template of Stand By Me.
There are a ton of similarities if you think about it.
Long story short, John Singleton worked security for Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman, on Pee Wee’s Playhouse.
John gave the script to Pee-wee, who then passed it to Laurence Fishbourne, who was a character on the show.
Laurence read the script, he was so touched by it, it made him cry, and he helped to get the movie funded and sold.
You wouldn’t believe it, if it weren’t fact.
Good fun facts
“Teddy just wanted to die man”
“😟 that’s that’s that’s that’s not ok 😳”
🥺🥺
His older brother would've probably stolen them if Vern hadn't buried them
Yeah his brother was about that life.
“I think their part fearless, part stupid”. So basically you’re saying they’re young boys.. Yep.
Lol! Yes boys are a lot lol.
Saw this in the theater with 3 friends at age 10. It’s still great.
This would have scared us at 10
@@SomethingCinema it was the 80’s, but we were just like those kids.
That's true... being out like that probably didn't scare anyone at that time
The same infamous line from *(Stand by Me) & (Boyz in the Hood)* do *"you want to see a dead body"*
Definitely
Just stand by me. I think that's the message.
So many messages in this movie
Really enjoyed your reaction and review.
Thank you... we are glad you enjoyed it
3:55 Gordie LaChance's story begins.
Thanks for this... this is when the movie starts everyone.
@@SomethingCinema I looked at the song listing in the credit crawl at the end of the movie and compared it to the "official" OST CD.
There's something missing! A trip to a well stocked used music CD/comic book store corrected (most) of that. What's missing?
Track 1: Orchestral version of "Stand By Me" ("Red River Rock" by Johnny & The Hurricanes, 1959, substituted)
Track 2: "Rockin' Robin" by Bobby Day, 1958
Track 3: "Sorry (I Ran All The Way Home" by The Impalas, 1959
Track 5: "Ballad of 'Paladin" ("Rebel Rouser" by Duane Eddy, 1958, substituted)
Track 9: "Book of Love" by The Monotones, 1957
Track 13: "Come Softly To Me" by The Fleetwoods, 1959
Track 14: "Hushabye" by The Mystics, 1959
This 17 track, custom music CD is arranged in "movie sequence," which puts things into perspective.
We gotta check that out
This film and Goonies are Corey Feldman's best performances... He tended to get worse as he got older...
River Phoenix worked with Harrison Ford in two films, both of which are worth seeing: The Mosquito Coast, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Yeah he was a really good actor
@@SomethingCinema Unfortunately, I think Feldman leaned too heavily on the "mouthy obnoxious kid" character, as he used it A LOT in the 80s (Stand By Me, The Goonies, The Lost Boys), when he was paired with Corey Haim (they were known as "the Coreys," in the 80s/90s), he kinda took a back-seat, and became more of a sidekick.
Dang that is true... that's what happens in Hollywood though... they put you in a box
Sneakers was great too. Great cast... Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Ackroyd, David Strathairn, James Earl Jones, and Phoenix!!
That's a great cast.
Lives are shaped in many ways, best with friends, for better or worse. Friends grow apart, It is a fact of life. I narrowly escaped death 4-5 times fucking around with my friends at that age. also, ty for making be sad remembering all this shit..
Our memories are all we have... so we have to live in the moment and appreciate it when we are in it... glad you escaped death and now have a story to tell.
I love this movie, but the one part that forever bothers me toward the end where Chris's older brother didn't tackle Ace for walking up to him with a knife. Like wtf!? It's one thing to bully, but to threaten to kill with a knife? What a shit brother.
Yeah his brother was trash
Love the reaction but about half the time you could only see about half of the picture. Btw it was narrated by Richard Dryfess of Jaws and Mr Holland’s Opus plus American Graffiti.
Yeah we are sorry about that... youtube kept giving us copyright claims if we didn't do it this way... we literally tried it every way... this was the only way that worked.
Did you know in the bridge scene the Train is actually McCloud River railroad 25
No we didn’t! Thanks for the fun fact!
@@SomethingCinema No problem😁
I didn't have that long of a childhood it probably ended when I was 11 or 12. And because of that lack of childhood with a mixture of other things I went into severe depression as I dwelled on the small bits of the childhood I did have. Wishing I could go back to those days when I was young.
Definitely my favorite childhood memories all revolves around me being outside or with those I was close to at the time. Getting into trouble, doing stupid stuff, and hanging out with friends but in the modern age such things aren't that common anymore and I've become anti social. At the age of 17 in high school I really wanted to savor my school life (The remaining bits of freedoms before I became just another adult) but it seems even that simple thing was stripped away from me to.
Life is cruel
It's definitely a different time... this doesn't happened anymore
Shit. I always forget how good this movie is.

@Something Cinema Another to react to also directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Kiefer Sutherland (Ace) is Flatliners. It's about med students experimenting with bringing each other back to life from near-death experiences and having to confront the demons from their pasts. I think it's underrated. Man, sweet vikings lap quilt. But do me a favor? Show tgde fuckin film. I watched this because i havent seen the movie in 20 years, i wanted highlights, half the time is spent on you guys. No offense, but your knees and a sliver of the scene in thw bottom... kindda sux.
I made it 10 minutes.. you gotta get a better setup
The way you want it youtube kept getting us for copyright... we want to do it that way but we just can't so we make it work the way we can. sorry you couldn't enjoy the movie but we still do recommend you watch it.
@Tom Andrews: As Something Cinema noted, below, they HAVE to do the reaction that way to avoid getting copyright strikes from CZcams.
