- Welcome to our first time watching Stand By Me (1986).
Wow! This is a classic! Based on the Stephen King novella "The Body", screenplay adapted by Bruce A Evans and Raynold Gideon, starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, Kiefer Sutherland and Richard Dreyfuss. Directed by Rob Reiner.
We LOVED this and hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (one of us a very long time ago). We both found it nostalgic, humorous, visceral, great fun, sad, happy and simply great. It left the Dad very emotional with a big wet wobbly one, watching it with his son added so many layers to the experience. Upon watching, we now rank this film as one of the all time personal favourite films now. It's a film that becomes ever so more rich when watching at different stages in life.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. When we watched this together, for the Dad the film immediately ascended up the list of favourite films ever. For the son, it’s his favourite of all the films we have done reactions for so far. It’s an amazing piece of work and watching it together was particularly special. Not many films have this effect across generations and also over the decades.
This is a re-upload because the first one we uploaded had glitches and we wanted to fix them, as they annoyed us. Since we loved it so much, we also added some more scenes and tightened some of the other cuts. We felt the film deserves this. This is the last of the re-uploads, sorry for any confusion.

The older I get the deeper this movie gets.
It's outstanding and hard to express and articulate why. But maybe that's exactly what makes it's so strong.
Same. I didn't understand a lot of it when I was a kid, but I watched because I still enjoyed it back then. With time and age I now find myself relating to so much of it, especially how friendships/relationships just slowly end. It's not because you had a fight or disagreement or anything either. It's just because you drifted apart for no reason other than time passing by.
This is the genius of Stephen King and his writing. He remembers what it’s like growing up. The joys, the pains, the growing awareness of the world around you. The fears, from which he created his renown. He didn’t always write horror, but managed to weave it into his stories.
Rob Reiner did an excellent job directing as always. Keeping the important elements of the story into the film.
At the end, when adult Gordy steps back and looks at his complete story, I like to imagine Chris' voice in the background: "You're gonna be a great writer someday, Gordy." 😢💔❤️❤️
He might even write about’us’ if he gets hard up for material…. When Chris and Gordy are walking the train tracks and their conversation is about being a father, it begins with Gordy asking Chris “Do you think I’m weird?”. As an adult at his screen, his son remarks to his friend “Yeah my Dad’s weird, he gets like that when he’s writing.”
I saw this with my brother and my older sister at General Cinema in Griffith that year. It was a theater chain in America. Gosh, what a theater. One of the movie theaters I've been to growing up.
It hits so differently as an adult. And River Phoenix disappearing at the end is especially painful, all that potential lost. From all accounts he was a very kind and gentle person in real life. I remember when he passed, it took the air out of me. Someone I didn't even know. FYI in the RHCPs song "Give it Away" there's a verse abt River. He also appeared in their "Breaking the Girl" video. He and Flea were good friends after meeting on the set of My Own Private Idaho.
When I was in about the 6th Grade, my teacher brought in the movie "Brian's Song". By the end of it, the whole class was crying. This might be a very good time to share it with your son

Agreed! Brian's Song is one of the few movies men allow themselves to cry over. I'd also like to see y'all react to other "manly" movies like Tombstone and the origional Roadhouse.

Oh, man, I've laughed and cried through this film over the years. When you two were watching the leech scene, I couldn't help laughing from my belly, because your faces were exactly what Steven King intended, raw cringe. As a director, Rob Reiner told this story very well. Steven King isn't always translated well from book to film. Good one.
I am so glad you are taking the time to watch so many amazing films together.
My parents loved exposing me to so many powerful films when I was young in the 80s and 90s.
They wanted to be there to explain the good and the bad, strong and the weak, the brave and the cowardly.
If something went over my head, they would do their best to help me to understand and see both sides of the story.
There is so much worth watching, and so much that can shape our lives.

River Phoenix was DeCaprio before DeCaprio was DeCaprio, if that makes sense. He was widely considered that generations best up and coming actor, and had he not died, there may not be a Leonardo DeCaprio, at least not the one we currently recognize. Phoenix was actually Cameron's first choice to play Jack in Titanic. Imagine how different things would be!!
Love love love this movie. I was 18 when it was released in 1986. I always say that every boy, guy, man, father should see this movie.

This is truly one of the greatest movies of the 80s, if not ever!

Two films to suggest: E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982) and The Last Starfighter (1984). Both are appropriate for your son's age range.
The term "hiding" in the context used in the film is from the phrase "tan your hide" which is taken from the term for turning animal skin into leather (tanning). Colloquially here it means to spank on the bottom. In the case of the character in this movie (played by River Phoenix) it implies that his father will spank him severely, usually done using a leather belt. "Hiding" is a very localized term used only in certain regions of the country. Corporal punishment of children by parents is still common in certain areas of the United States, particularly southern and conservative states. Northern and liberal states (the majority of the population) consider it barbaric.
Yes, back in the 1950s, "hiding" would have referred to the use of that tanned hide (leather strap) on the bare hide of the hind-end of the boy - pants down around the ankles. They would even do this in school - "bend over and grab your ankles!" In and old British book from the 1920s I've seen this referred to as "receiving a leathering".
Such a fantastic film and the pie eating contest scene has always been the part that I remember seeing when I was 12 in 1989. I wasn't allowed to see it so I had to watch it at a friend's house on a sleepover, along with Terminator. Very difficult to see and not fully understand the emotions at 12. So glad you both got to watch this together and talk about it. 💙💛
One of my most favourite movies
Hiding is a term used to describe being whipped with a leather belt. A belt is made of leather, the “hide” of an animal used to flay your hide. That’s a hiding. Also you hid your tears alone because big boys don’t cry.
We do have that expression in England too, my mum used to "give me a hiding" if I swore at school, but she'd use a slipper instead of a belt, my granddad would use a belt but he only ever did that to me once

I love this movie: it’s so well done and hugely nostalgic for me. I grew up in the sixties, in the eastern U.S., but the music, the kids, and their hijinks are exactly right. This is how it was. We never went on an overnight adventure like that, but we played in the woods and went on 5-mile bike rides starting at age 10. It was a different world. The bridge incident really gets me. We had a trestle, only about 50 yards long, but our big dare was to climb down the wooden girders and hold on as a freight train passed overhead. Sometimes they could be 100 cars.
I’ve seen every combination of paired reactors, except a parent with a young child. It is wonderful to see you guys share these moments, as I am a big believer in passing on the cultural torch. I’m subscribing.
Hard to know what to recommend without knowing what genres you like or what you may have seen already. You can’t go wrong with the three “Chronicles of Narnia” movies (2005-2010), which I think were British productions.

River Phoenix 😔😔😢😫😪🤧 Such a loss. Gone way too soon. Wil Wheaton is so under rated. He was great in this movie. And I feel a bit of his real life (at the time) came out a little in this performance. Corey Feldman always gives a great performance. He apparently was going through stuff too horrible to mention. 😢 And of course Jerry O'Connell.... So awesome. And can't even go by without mentioning Kiefer Sutherland. A great beginning to a great career. Richard Dreyfuss... A class act always. I can't think of any negative for any of this great cast. Rob Reiner did a phenomenal job directing. Last and certainly not least Stephen King always being an awesome author! Sorry for being long-winded. 😁

Loved Stephen King's 1982 novella book, I think all of them were turned into great movies. This one is a timeless film.
Took us by surprise
This movie keeps being incredible no matter how many years go by. The ending is brilliant and resonates deep. I was about 15 when it came out , saw it on theaters and now after all these years it’s still an amazing movie. The Blu-ray has fantastic audio commentary. Go get it if you love the movie.

Absolutely. Wil Wheaton's delivery of "he hates me" about his father hits like a truck now.
My next film recommendation for you is the 2013 film "The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet". It is a bit dark, but not as dark as "Stand By Me", and also involves a journey and is a "narrated" story. The main protagonist, TS, is 10 years old and the story involves a journey. I feel the film has been underrated, and never had a wide release. That is rather unfortunate as the cinematography is great (though it was originally filmed as 3D), the story is heartfelt, and the acting is fairly solid. Most of the film is rather humorous, with only a couple of times where it is a bit dark and sorrowful. I think you will like it.

A fav of mine. I read the story before seeing the film. I recommend reading it, simply to see what a great job they did of translating it to the screen. That's very rare I think?

Thank you for watching. Yes I agree, this adaptation is a good example of being potentially better than the book. They’re different mediums of course, but the little changes enhanced the story for Gordie. Also in this book was another adaptation which is better being Shawshank Redemption

@@GenerationMediaReaction The one that stands out in my mind as being accessible (as well as resonant in the modern world in a way that it wasn't necessarily when it was originally released) is *The Birds* (1963). Regarding the suggestion of *Rear Window* (1954), I feel moved to mention that a non-Hitchcock film made only five years earlier, *The Window* (1949), has a very similar premise, but features a juvenile protagonist, Bobby Driscoll, later the voice and image of Disney's *Peter Pan* (1953).
@@GenerationMediaReaction Rear Window is the best Hitchcock. But The Birds, Vertigo, Dial M For Murder, North By Northwest, Rope, Psycho, and others are all really good. The best Hitchcock for a first watch is tough, since they all have adult themes. Kids nowadays handle gore better than the romantic/sex stuff so maybe start with The Birds.

If you haven't seen The Sandlot (1993), I highly recommend it as another coming of age story. Still very moving, but not as somber themed.

I don't know if you actually reacted to this one before "Jaws" but if not, did you bring to the young one's (sorry, idk his name, or yours for that matter) that Richard Dreyfuss (pronounced by him as DRY-fuss) was 'Hooper' in "Jaws"? Another great Dreyfuss movie you both would enjoy is "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (sci-fi, aliens, 1977.)

I’ve had a few people recommend that. The one with Jacob Iremblay isn’t it? He’s a great actor. One of his movie that I did that I wish these two would is ‘Wonder.’ It’s one of the best films I’ve ever seen. And it’s got a great cast! (Julia Robert’s, Owen Wilson, Noah Jupe, and obviously Jacob Tremblay himself.)

Yes Good Boys was a big departure from Jacobs normal dramatic roles but it proved he could do comedy as well. Be aware Good Boys is rated R and has a lot of language and some would argue adult humor although its really nothing your average 12 or 13 year old boy would hear amongst his peers. The film is sometimes referred to as a preteen version of Superbad.

Look up Jacobs small part in Dr. Sleep which was the sequel to the shining. But be prepared, the scene could be hard to watch but Jacob nails it as always.

Ace wouldn't wait so long for his revenge (and didn't, according to Stephen King's novella), nor would he attack so indirectly in a place with so many witnesses, but this speculation (by the son) was an interesting by-product of Dad pointing out that Chris was the subject of the newspaper article in the prologue, a fact that doesn't register with most first-time viewers until the end. As for the Jeep accident, it's interesting that a Jeep is specified, because that's a military vehicle. It suggests that he might have joined the Army (though I think many Jeeps were also in civilian use by 1959).

Not really, those titles are set in more harsh environments. There's not much of a British equivalent to Stand By Me to be honest. Which is why it's so special. British films with young people like to have a socio-political edge to them. One film might be Quadrophenia since it depicts a particular scene of the mods, East is East is good.
