- Welcome to our first time watching The Goonies (1985).
Wow! This is great fun! A fast-paced adventure with a lovable bunch of characters. Written by Chris Columbus, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, directed by Richard Donner, starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Ke Huy Quan.
We REALLY ENJOYED this and hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations. We both found it funny, great fun, adventurous and entertaining. Maybe for some it might have some nostalgia but for us it was our first time!

Thanks! if you haven't seen them i think you might like 1.flight of the navigator (1986) 2.harry and the Henderson's(1987) 3.the Wizard(1989) 4 Labyrinth (1986)
Thank you so much! We've never had a donation before. Thank you! We can't do Flight Of The Navigator as we have already seen it, but Labyrinth is a good one!
@@GenerationMediaReaction I'm sure you will get lots move donations. Keep up the great content, labyrinth is one of my top10 favorite movies
How about “The NeverEnding Story” Another real classic of the era, or “Gremlins” Both from 1984.
Answer to your Question: A Goonie is a resident of the Goon Docks which is a small neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, USA. It's the poorest neighborhood of the city, filled with lower middle class blue collar families. In the movie, the entire area is in jeopardy of being bulldozed to make a high-end golf course for the upper class of the city.
Fun fact: The lads in Stand By Me actually watched The Goonies together, at the movies, while they were together filming SBM.
We need more fathers like you in this world.. the way you interact with your son is just awesome
Only fossils like myself know that "HEY YOU GUYS" is referencing an old children's workshop tv program called The Electric Company.
With the first live action Spider-Man and Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader
The Electric Company changed how a whole generation of people count to 12
Rita Moreno was the one who yelled it.
Loved that show.
me too
Chunk was so funny. When he cries after they take his ice cream away...🤣😆🤣
Mama Fratelli has the best one liners too 🤪
Many, many years later, Data won an Oscar !
And dont forget that he was Short round in Indiana Jones and the temple of doom
"Mom, I won an Oscar!"
The Sandlot could be fun to check out. That and The Goonies were the two "gang of friends" movies I loved growing up. It feels like a bridge between Stand by Me and The Goonies, with an adult narrator reflecting back on a childhood summer in the 60s but more light-hearted tone.
57 and i so watch it. I even named my dog Hercules - he was a little white pomeranian that thankfully lived 17 years. Miss him dearly
What’s great about this movie is it’s for kids and adults alike. I’ve watched it soooo many times I’ve lost count. I love how realistic the kids are all talking over each other and at the same time, that’s how it really is.
Ke Huy Quan (Data) Was in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!
80s slang term for fisherman houses on the boat docks was goon docks...they all live by the goon docks, hence the name "goonies"
It's so cool that you're sharing these coming of age films with your son. Thanks for sharing
This film and "Kindergarten Cop" were both shot on the Oregon coast in a town called Astoria. Maybe "Kindergarten Cop" would be a good watch. Or the original "Ghostbusters" from 1984 if you haven't seen it yet.
Thanks from Seattle for a great watch you guys!
“Short Circuit” was filmed/set in Astoria, too.
OOh!
The LOST BOYS 1987 - Teenage rock n' roll vampires.
EXPLORERS 1985 - Kids build a spaceship, after recieving instructions on how to in their dreams.
CONAN the BARBARIAN 1982 - Dude. Arnold in his prime... and the music..... truly a masterpiece.
I never realized that the eyepatch on the man in the shower was a joke in itself, until your son said "It's One-Eyed Willie." He made me laugh so hard, I rolled off the chair. Great reaction, guys.
Yeah, that was exactly why these reaction videos are fun!
This is part of the short lived 80s genre of kids going on perilous adventures, you’ve already seen Stand By Me. If you like this, you might like some others: Time bandits (1981), Flight of the navigator (1986), Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), Cloak and Dagger (1984), ET (1982), The Gate (1987), Space Camp (1986), Monster Squad (1987)
OMG, I’ve watched this film numerous times since the 80’s and thanks to you, I just got the joke of “one eyed Willie” 😂 😂😂
Is it only Brits who do the eyebrow raise and mini snigger whenever One-Eyed Willie is mentioned?
No. We put it in there because it was an inside joke here in the US that a one eyed Willy is a penis.
My all time FAVORITE movies! And I'm 71 years old! 😅
The younger of you two is very clever and understanding when it comes to logic. Figuring out stuff in the beginning
Although this is a timeless classic, and kids of all ages can and will love it, kids will never get it the way we got it back in the 80's. We had the same technologies, cars, shops, clothes etc, so we could truly see ourselves in those kids. I love reaction channels like this where we can see a new generation discovering our beloved movies. I wish you 2 all the youtube success you can achieve.
Martha Plimpton (the girl in glasses) dated River Phoenix for years before they broke up over his drug use.
"IT'S ONE EYED WILLY" LMFAO... Ok.. your son is funny too! He gets it haha
This was Steven Spielbergs Indiana Jones for children. I remember seeing it in the theater with a dear friend of mine that passed a couple years ago.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to see the younger generation discovering this film early, for us 80's kids this pretty much sums us up. The last of the latchkey generation always looking for adventure wherever we could find some. I remember being about 8 or 9 during the school summer holidays where my mum would kick me out of the house, give me a £1 if I needed food and tell me to get on my bike and have fun with my friends exploring and be back before dark.
A great time to be young
I love the reaction of the Dad every time something inappropriate comes on- cursing, mentions of drugs, etc. Kids in the 80's were rough and tumble for sure.
I think the filmmakers back then were just realistic about who kids are. Most of us learn about this stuff in grade school. Parents just try to shield us from it. A losing struggle I know.
How nice it is to see a father and son doing these videos together and spending quality time together.
What a well mannered, lovely young man.
Gave you guys a new sub. Good luck with your channel!
I just realized that I sound like a very old lady with an afghan on my lap and a butterscotch candy in my pocket. Lol!
I’m only an early middle aged lady but I think using the phrase “lovely young man” is something my Grammy would say.
I think Back to the Future would be a great series. I watched the first one when I was 10 or 11 and was hooked.
Such a classic childhood movie I loved watching and still love watching from time to time
Only found you guys the other night..Loved watching you both so much I Subbed, Your son is such a sweet smart boy and your a great cool dad. Loved the 80's my early teens was full of great movies for sure. But my most fav when it came out was ''Close encounters of the third kind'' have you guys seen it yet? It's fantastic.
One day this kid is gonna grow up and realize that this whole channel idea was a way for his dad to bond with his son, and he's gonna be SO MAD! 😛
I just want to say.. Your kid is extremely smart for his age! I really enjoy your guys reactions! Great bond it seems between you two as father and son.. Great to see!! Can't wait for more! :) just makes me smile!
“chunk” grew up to be a quite attractive acting agent ! He represents Ke Quan as an adult & got him into Everything, everywhere all at Once”! He won an Oscar 🎉
One of my top 5 of all times. I remember watching this being the same age as the kids in the movie
'It's HIM! I recognize him!' Data's too funny!
Goonies never say die! I got a T-shirt that says those words. 😂😅
You're a good dad, i'm loving these reactions . keep testing him with questions , it'll only make him smarter. I love how in awe you are with some of his answers, we can see the cogs turning...beautiful.
Thank you! We just recorded War Games, and it definitely got us thinking
I've seen this film a hundred times and just now thought, "Why were they hiring a new housekeeper if they were about to move?". And the character was completely unnecessary too. 😄
Goonies was filmed on the Oregon coast. My home state. Really enjoyed your reaction.
Bravo father and son. I enjoyed your reaction to "Stand by Me" but i kinda thought you spoon fed your a little to much to make sure he understood. Your son is quite intelligent and astute, he followed the storyline on pace and with a young persons perspective. He figured out that they were going to find a treasure map. In all my adult years when first seeing Sloth i never pictured as a elf or troll, so wonderful to see through the eyes of a child. Please keep up the good work.
Mikey’s Big Brother (Josh Brolin) in this movie is the guy who played Thanos in Avengers.
Interestingly, "Stand By Me" was filmed in Brownsville, Oregon and "The Goonies" was filmed in Astoria, Oregon.
If you're still looking for suggestions, from this sort of era, there's Flight of The Navigator, E.T The Extra Terrestrial. The Sandlot. Mrs Doubtfire. The original Jumanji, with Robin Williams. The Iron Giant. Honey I Shrunk the Kids. And Truman Show.
All solid 80s and 90's classics, in my opinion.
Would R movies be appropriate? Like robocop terminator 2 and escape from LA?
@@user-zd1oc3pz8s They've done Jaws, so perhaps they're open to some more mature-ish movies. It depends, I suppose.
I think Terminator 2 is a good choice. Not sure he's ready for Robocop though? That one's pretty graphic. Although I had seen it around his age.
This was a great video. You seem to have a great relationship and it translates very well. I'm loving the intelligence and attention to detail. A++ reaction, boys! Cheers
Thank you so much!
Perfect movie to watch with your young son.
I would love to see you two react to The Karate Kid (1984) and Back to the Future. Two of my favorites.
Mikey (Sean Astin) would go on to be Samwise in "The Lord of the Rings"
Bran (Josh Brolin) would go on to be Thanos in the recent Marvel movies
Data (Ke Huy Quan) was Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and recently won that oscar for "Everything, Everywhere, all at Once"
And you're right about Mouth, that's Corey Feldman from "Stand by Me"
Josh Brolin also played the young version of K in Men in Black 3
Sean Astin also played in “Encinoman”, with Brendan Fraser and Pauly Shore.
Never wiser than when we were children...they say it is true
That’s not good news for me, considering how many unwise things I did when I was younger. I hope I’m at least a bit wiser now. 😄
Night at the Museum is another choice for ya to try. I love those movies.
Not sure if you've ever watched "Dutch", "The Three Amigos" or "Inner space" . Would recommend them all! Love your reaction videos!
I can’t believe your son has never seen this, but as a father, I can’t believe at your age you have never seen this before the goonies is a go to classic
hehe, i know... it was just slightly behind my age growing up
Pretty sure your boy got treasure map in his mind because of the skull and crossbones at the start. Definitely could have a subliminal effect triggering the idea.
Great job again, guys. Keep them coming.
I really enjoying your channel.. I like your bond with your son and sharing movies that show connection
Thank you so much!
Great movie! You guys need to watch Big Trouble in Little China! It's a non-stop full on fun rollercoaster ride!
Fun fact: The first time the Goonies saw the pirate ship was the filming. Therefore these reactions were genuine.
5:23 Samwise Gamgee threatening Thanos.
One of the best films, just so fun, at 41 I still love it as much as a kid, I get sentimental just watching this
Astoria is a beautiful place another movie they filmed there is Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Swartzenegger you guys would like it I highly recommend
This is a great movie for you two ---> Three O'Clock High is a 1987 American teen comedy film directed by Phil Joanou. The script, about a meek high schooler who is forced into a fight with an unstable new transfer student, is based on the high school experiences of screenwriters Richard Christian Matheson and Thomas Szollosi. It was shot in Ogden, Utah.
One of my favorite movies!
@@RogCBrand Well made movie i love it too !
labyrinth would be a great film to watch, the lost boys, the burbs, turner and hooch, big...
also the breakfast club and ferris buellers day off
big trouble in little china
@@foreignmilk5589 "You know what ole' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?."👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
On a rainy Sunday afternoon when this came out, I was four. My dad and I were home alone and he suprised me with an afternnoon movie. We ran into the theater as it was pouring rain. I even had on the same yellow raincoat as MIkey. We could hear the thunder from outside in as the movie played and when the it opened on the Skull, I was hooked. When we left the theater back in 1984, both my Dad and I were officially Goonies. And I've been looking for secret passageways ever since!
Gotta watch TIME BANDITS my dudes!
Time Bandits definitely has our attention (neither of us have seen it!)
@@GenerationMediaReaction
You absolutely must.
Great reaction! Please check out another Richard Donner film - 1978’s Superman: The Movie!
3:02 That is the actual hat of Indian Jones
This came out before Stand by Me. Ke Huy Quan (who won an Oscar last year) and played Data was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. And the hat Robert Davi is wearing is one of the hats used in the Indiana Jones films.
What a nice, wholesome video 😊
Thank you! 😃
Great to see these classics getting appreciation from young and less young alike.
If you’ve not seen it I’d recommend “Young Sherlock Holmes” (1985)
Magic, adventure, danger this film has it all.
Hi guys, I'm loving your film reactions ! I've been trying to think of other age appropriate Films that you might enjoy reacting to.
How about ?
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Jaws 2 (1978)
Return to OZ (1985)
Beetlejuice (1988)
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Jurassic Park (1993)
ooo nice... Edward Scissorhands could be an unusual choice
I remember seeing this movie in the theaters. It was awesome!
Their reaction to the ship was genuine. None of them were allowed to see it before filming the scene.
If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend The Neverending Story.
'Stand By Me' was based on the story "The Body" from the novella 'Different Seasons' by Stephen King. It was published in 1982, which predated the Goonies.
Mikey grows up to be Samwise from lord of the rings, and the older brother Brand grows up to be Thanos!! (the actors lol)
And Francis Fratelli grows up (?) to try to get reinserted back into the Matrix. 😄
They are talking about making a sequel, where the kids in this one is parents to a new group of Goonies.
Pretty cool seeing a kid who was probably my age when i saw this for the first time and his father whose closer to my age i think. THIS is nostalgia the movie, Its so deep in my soul i can hear a second of music or one scene and feel.
Thanks for watching. It’s good it still resonates with the next generation
I’m almost 30 and absolutely love this movie it was one we’d watch nearly every weekend until my siblings got board of it, It’s always a pleasure to see people’s enjoyment of this amazing movie. Also you mentioned Indiana jones Raiders of the lost ark well the Chinese kid Data is going to be a familiar face when you watch temple of doom as he’s Short round.
Congrats on 600 followers...more red dwarf would be awesome..and for a movie watch my bodyguard 1980 with chris makepeace and matt Dillon great movie.peace ✌️
I live in Astoria, where the film is based and was filmed in parts. It's cool, they have pirate flags on flag poles and all sorts of stuff around town. I'm more of a Stand By Me and Karate Kid guy, but The Goonies is fun.
That's cool. I'm from Scotland. I've always wanted to visit Astoria because of the scenery I've seen of it in movies. I believe Kindergarten Cop was filmed there too.
Don't forget to show her The Time Bandits.
Another very good family friendly film is "The Princess Bride". It would be nice to watch you both react to that.
Great suggestion!
Love your reactions, and your son is so cute
Samwise and Thanos.😅
Great reaction guys!
Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you 🙌
Searching for Bobby Fisher would be a fantastic father son movie. It's a great film based on a real person.
Most people missed this great movie because it was released in 1993 . A year of some of the most epic blockbuster movies ever to come out in a single Year. Movies like Jurassic Park, Catlitos Way, Shindlers List, This Boys Life, and so many others. This movie, great as it😂 was, just fell into the background noise of all these other popular movies. But it's a really great movie with a truly great cast. Ben Kingsley and Lawrence Fishburn, and William H. Macy in one of his very first roles. All the cast are fantastic. And it's a very inspiring experience.
Sean Astin movie called "White Water Summer"......Corey Feldman movie "License to Drive".....
My Girl.
I play the piano and I loved that part i would have knocked it out of the park on that scene at her age.
It's amazing that I loved both of those movies and I never ever made that stand by me connection.
One thing i also never noticed before was chunks vomit story is the same as Gordies'
Y'all are becoming one of my favorite reactors
So cool getting a chance to watch these films with your son. I highly recommend Harry and the Hendersons.
Two fantastic but lesser known films starring that come to mind and happen to star River Phoenix are Running on Empty and The Mosquito Coast. They're a bit heavier like Stand By Me but really fantastic family films, although not exactly films made for kids. Maybe check those out in your down time. Quality stuff.
Alright now, excellent choice!! My two most favorite movies back to back. Might like this channel!
Enjoy!
I agree with everyone saying do the Sandlot at some point.
Great reaction guys.....
Fun Fact:
The scene with the pirate ship: They kept it secret from the kids till the day & scene when they actually see the ship... so its a real 1st time reaction.🙂👍
( sound familiar ✌️😁 )
Future movies:
(Baseball movies just in time for spring training)
The Sandlot (1993)
Bad News Bears (1976)
More movies:
Wizard of Oz (1939)
A movie every kid an adult should watch !
Ghost Busters (1984)
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
The one and only WW ✌️😁
Back to the Future (1985)
Toy Story (1995)
Another great movie that I think you would enjoy is The Sandlot (1993). It is a coming-of-age story centered around kids playing baseball.
This was amazing 😅
You and your son are great to watch react to films. He is so smart to call the treasurer map ahead of time. New SUB! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I think Stand By Me will be my next.
Thanks for the sub!
❤️❤️🥰
Little trivia tidbit- the DEA agent in the ice cream freezer was also the man in the rowboat who lost his leg in the estuary in Jaws! Ted Grossman, stuntman, appeared in SO many incredible movies, particularly some of those 80's/Gen X film touchstones (Star Wars, Indiana Jones)- it's fun to try to spot him, if you know he's there.
thats awesome !
I loooove This movie!
If you haven’t put The Princess Bride on your list, it’s time to watch that too.
Lucas is another goodie. Coming of age, family friendly movie.
Actually.. I am not sure if you have seen them or not... but you should watch the BEST trilogy EVER MADE with your son... "Back To The Future" Trilogy... would be so much fun for you two!
The Only movie where led by Samwise (LOTR).. he can work together with Teddy (Stand by me),, Shortround (Temple of Doom) and Thanks (MCU) can work together and work out their issues with a Lawyer (Chunk)
I came here because I saw your Matrix reaction. Love the reaction to this classic movie too! :D
Probably my favourite kids movie...I was a kid when I saw this for the first time...Amazing to see it again!
"When you get older you get more stupid" You are not wrong little man x We try our best. Young people make their own mistakes...I know I did. If only I had a map to follow? lol x
Boobie-traps etc...
Awesome! Thank you!
I love watching movies with you guys.. You both seem like some cool dudes
