  • Welcome to our first time watching Jaws (1976).
What a classic! Based on the Peter Benchley novel and written by him and Carl Gottlieb, starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and directed by Steven Spielberg.
We really enjoyed this and hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (one of us a long time ago). We both found it scary, gruesome, great fun, full of suspense, excitement and masterful storytelling. It exceeded our expectations. Not bad for being made almost 50 years ago!

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. Jaws is a truly well crafted classic from the 70s. Watch our review at the end. It’s still very impressive.
This is a re-upload because the first one we uploaded had glitches and we wanted to fix them. And then whilst we were doing that, we also did a re-edit of the whole reaction with more scenes and tighter cuts. We also adjusted the volume on the clips and reduced the opacity so it now has a better sound mix and better colour grade. We felt the film deserves this.

You know it’s a good movie when it can scare multiple generations of people from getting into the ocean, for literal decades. My mom saw this when she was 13/14 years old and is forever scared of the ocean/sharks because of it. I’m only 25 but when I saw this as a kid in the early 2000s it instilled the same fear into me! I swear I can’t get into any body of water without that fear of imagining that freakin shark swimming under me. One of the best movies ever

1 hour in and your boy freaked a little bit with Quint's passing. I don't mind saying that it's the SCENE, that haunts the nightmares of children because it haunted my own dreams for years. The Best information to offer, is that we human beings are just one link in the chain of being, we're on the food chain. when we enter the Oceans we are at the bottom of the food chain.
which should give your son the right ideas and caution when dealing with every part of nature.

While you can tell the shark is not real in some scenes, in two particularly - the very first time you see him above the water in the pond when he pulls the man under after knocking him out of the boat and when he breaks through the window into the boat after eating Quint - he looks absolutely real. They did an excellent job with the practical effects.

One of the things that ups the lightning-in-a-bottle quality of this films is that the only “actors” in this films are the three leads, Brody’s wife and Deputy, and the Mayor. Everyone else are just locals. The coroner in the film was the town coroner. Alex Kintner’s mother was a schoolteacher. All of the kids were just local kids.

The part where Brody told the mayor that the mother wasn't wrong is probably my favorite part of the movie because it says a lot about Brody himself. He could've easily passed the blame to the mayor but felt ala Harry Truman that the buck stops here. No matter how the decision to keep the beaches open was made and who was involved in making that decision Brody felt that it was his responsibility to keep that boy safe and he failed to do so.

sharks swim at that shallow depth. they'll 'trip' you, sweep your legs out, and that's how children have been taken, in the shallows. a shark will beach itself, chasing human prey. nobody really respects the Oceans or the Life it contains which would be why sharks are eating humans exponentially while Orcas attack boats. i think schools of dolphins will start on the ships....

I was a biology student at the beginning of the 90s and one of my teachers was a zoologist, not a marine biologist but with experience in ichtyology (fish biology). He showed us some pictures of a diver, one arm and the head missing. He collaborated with the navy authority to determine the cause of death of the diver. It was a single bite from a big white shark, the arc of the bite gave away a size of about 4 meters long. This was in Chile, this is proof of the cosmopolitan distribution of white sharks. They have known feeding grounds but they basically migrate worldwide. THIS gave me nightmares. Great review guys!

Love the concept of your reaction channel, especially seeing you both spend quality time growing a mutual passion for film. I’ve seen a few of your reactions so far and your son is already so perceptive about film making techniques and observing subtle things like how long someone is portrayed in a scene. One of the things I love the most is seeing you taking time to stop and discuss important issues and/or feelings that come up along the way, using the films not just for entertainment, but as opening opportunities to teach and spark discussions about life and people and feelings, as well as the craft of and appreciation for filmmaking and acting. I love how you are always watching and gushing if your son is okay and being mindful if he needs a break or to talk through any issues. Finally I love that while you are clearly observant in moments where there might be adult content or context or concept (whether related to sex or violence or other more adult topics) and noticing his reaction and balancing how much, if any, discussion might be needed and being age appropriate, not over emphasizing the moments or concepts and making them more weighty than necessary when there is no escaping him noticing, while also recognizing that there are moments and concepts that kids won’t even recognize as having adult concept that often go right over their head without even noticing them and this need no comment even if you notice them.
All around love the bond you both have. Thank you for sharing your reactions and giving us a glimpse into these experiences you are sharing.

I live in Adelaide South Australia Ron and Valerie Tailor filmed most of the underwater shots in SA. When the movie came out at one of the local shopping malls they had a great white shark on display in the back of a refrigerated semi trailer. There was a door on each end and the trailer had a big sheet of glass through the middle so you could walk through. The shark was on the other side of the glass. It was dead of course and placed in an underwater pose like it was swimming. It was huge and terrifying just knowing that this shark could have been swimming in the water when I used to swim at the beach. It was that day I swore never to swim in the ocean again. But I do think that the sea is the sharks home and if a surfer or swimmer gets taken we should not kill the shark. I think if you choose to go in the ocean you do it at your own risk. Great reaction to the movie.👍🏻👍🏻🦈

Yeah, didn't have nightmares but I couldn't sleep with my feet hanging off the bed or pull the plug out of the bath before I got out of it for years after watching the film! 🤣 Oh & I went on to study, practice & teach filmmaking & we often use the famous 'Trumbone' shot & Spielberg's use of music, mystery & suspense as a tool, what u can't see is often scarier than what u can see, of course the shark is not really seen in the first half of the movie because they had technical problems with it & it forced the filmmakers to build suspense in a really creative way, I think it's fantastic. Kiddo, you are sharp! I do believe you called each kill and caught the clue about camera time on the doomed.
I was 7 when this movie came out, and it was my first favorite movie. I loved it and I still do. I was rooting for the shark, which says a lot about the kind of little girl I was....
I wanted to explain the Mayor and the townspeople's attitude about closing the beaches. Most people assume its about greed but its more complicated than that.
As he said on the ferry, "Amity is a summer town. We need summer dollars." 99% of Amity's businesses have three months to make a year's worth of profits. When the lady at the meeting shouts, "Twenty four hours is like three weeks!", she's correct.
The Mayor is responsable for Amity's wellbeing and he wants to be reelected. He does not want to be remembered as the guy who financially tanked the town.
Also, you may remember the reporter saying, "We've never had a shark attack in these waters!" And, the tiger shark was confirmed as rare for the area. So there was reason to believe the right shark had been caught and it was time to move on.
When we see the Mayor freaking out at the hospital later, he is truly coming to grips with the fact he was wrong, AND not only endangered the public but his own kids as well.
His character is really very layered, and if he is a villian, he's an unintentional one. He is more guilty of bad judgement than outright evil.

Loved this Reaction Video. I was 12 when my Grandmother gave me Jaws to read, I had a very cool Grandmother. It was the only book I had ever read cover to cover at that stage. When I was 14 I got my first surfboard, with 3 Mates I went to Forster on the north coast of NSW. The first day there it was pouring down with rain so we decided to go to the movies before going to the beach. Yep, Jaws had just come out. Worst decision ever. We were all too scared to go any further into the surf than about 10 meters. We all destroyed our surf boards on the pebbled shore line. My Grandmother also gave me Midnight Express and Deliverance, luckily I didn't play the banjo or frequent Turkish prisons. Great Movie and Great reaction Sir and young Master Sir. Love from Great White Central. NSW Australia

Your son seems quite intelligent, and I admire how you ask him questions on his conclusions for you to get him to deepen his analytical abilities. Excellent parenting, if I were 30 years younger, I would apply this with my kids.

Spielberg really is amazing. I think the dolly-out zoom-in is from Hitchcock. One Spielberg scene that comes to mind that is pretty astonishing is the cliff scene in The Lost World...and the last few minutes of Poltergeist when everything just goes crazy, although on paper he didn't direct that film. haha Some directors can tackle such complex scenes and others can take command of such large sets, but nowadays it feels like that is a rarity.

"This is a re-upload because the first one we uploaded had glitches and we wanted to fix them. And then whilst we were doing that, we also did a re-edit of the whole reaction with more scenes and tighter cuts. We also adjusted the volume on the clips and reduced the opacity so it now has a better sound mix and better colour grade. We felt the film deserves this."
