- Welcome to our first time watching Titanic (1999). This is Part 1, due to length of film.
Such a great set-up to this story that really pulled us in as an audience. The writing of this love story is exceptional and sets an epic scene for Part 2. Written and Directed by James Cameron, Produced by John Landau, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and Bernard Hill. Shortly after filming this reaction, it made the news that the great Bernard Hill sadly passed away, so we wish his family well. We compliment his excellent performance in this.
Please check out Part 2 as well ,where our reactions become more animated as the drama unfolds. We thought the story, filmmaking and emotions are on an epic scale. Hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (admittedly one of us 25 years ago). We both found it a rich and complex and is truly justified as a great film.

I like how at the start of the drawing scene dad is more uncomfortable than his son. His son is being real mature about it, and just taking it is for what it is - real mature for his age. Dad quickly realizes this, and then relaxes.

The boy is very perceptive (more so than many adult reactors). He quickly picked up on how well Jack handled himself at dinner while being subtly insulted by cal and rose's mother.

The lady that was nice to Jack Dawson was The Unsinkable Molly Brown! She & her hubby became rich unexpectedly and went from being poor hill country folk to the very, VERY rich! They didn't fit in well with the American rich elites, so she went to Europe & they LOVED her! She was on her way back to America after many years - on the Titanic! That's why she's so "down to earth" & accepting of Jack when no one else is. She helped to save many people off the ship. And became quite famous.
There's a famous movie/musical called The Unsinkable Molly Brown about her. You should react to it! It's a lot of fun! 🤗 💞
From what i read her son passed and that's why she had some of his clothes with her.
and there have been multyiple movies and even musicals about her couldn't pick a better person to play her than chatty Kathy, Nice to see her in some good Edwardian frocks too divine

He’s young enough that he’s not desensitized to everything yet but also old enough to properly analyze what’s happening/have genuine reactions to what’s going on.

dad is doing a lot of talking and exposition. As if his son is deaf and blind . I personally like reactors who react to what they see, instead of repeating what is said on screen or pointing out the obvious to fill up the silence
or maybe the dad's narration is part of the reason, that the kid picks up on so much.

He then drew the drawing mirrored, had some light guide lines on the paper during filming which can't be seen under the lights. He then drew it as seen with his *right* hand. Jim told us himself at a museum event here in Australia in March. The guy is just endless talent

@@dicekolev5360You’re so very right. Personally, my obsession didn’t start until 2018, 20 years after seeing it the first time. Still obsessed…. There is a clip from behind the scenes of a man talking about the perfume vials they recovered from the wreck, and he became very emotional. That’s when my obsession began.
@dicekolev5360 it doesn't matter what decade it is, a lot of kid's first special interest in history is either titanic or ancient egypt lol
So the rudder line is completely false. Titanic could actually turn incredibly fast, but from the time the lookout saw the iceberg to the time of impact was only around 30 seconds. The fact that they were almost able to turn the ship in time says a lot about how fast Titanic actually could turn.
I read somewhere that if they hadn't tried to turn, and hit the iceberg straight on, then it's unlikely the ship would have sank
@@GenerationMediaReaction that is almost certainly the case but completely understandable why they wouldn't do that. If they had hit it head-on, quite a few people would have died when the bow collapsed. Perhaps with hindsight they may have chosen that instead of running against the side of the iceberg, but they had basically no time to make a decision.

Fun fact: Most of the dive footage were entirely done with underwater sets using large scale models of the wreck. There are a few shots in the underwater sequence where they used actual dive footage of the wreck. You can tell because of the low quality of the images. Any footage where you see the other submersibles and lighting in the shots are all underwater wreck set footage.

My 4th grade teacher had us studying the Titanic. She took us on a field trip to see Titanic, the Broadway play and the movie. She was an extraordinary teacher. I wonder where she is and if she is still living.

Another inaccuracy is that no one got trapped by the water tight doors. The compartments had ladders that allowed people to climb up to the top deck. They wouldn't need to go through the doors to get out.

I do like that the first half of the film they do everything to show how large the ship is. After the berg they show just how small it is.
Fun fact, young man...the director of the movie, James Cameron was the one drawing the sketch of Rose with the necklace. And may I say, as a film critic, myself, I am very impressed with your astuteness and ability to understand the intricacies of the story. You have a good eye.

The drawing of Rose was done by James Cameron itself.
James Cameron was the artist who sketched Rose naked, and he did it from life for the sequence. All of the sketches of Jack's were made by Cameron.

Its interesting the mythology that surrounds the Titanic story. Being a titanic enthusiast you learn overtime how public perception of the ship and the disaster is often overexaggerated. For example, the designers of the olympic class ships, titanic was the 2nd set of triplet ships. The first one build was the Olympic which actually performed exactly as her designers intended her to. She fulfilled a successful career up until technological advancement made her obsolete and was scrapped in the 1930's due to the great depression. The claim that the olympic class ships including Titanic were unsinkable was not directly said by White Star Line or the ship builders. It was a promotional headline that the current media and tabloids exaggerated on which became public knowledge and stoked blind confidence of the ship's capabilities. Now the olympic class liners were designed with very specific scenarios in mind with typical ship accidents of the day, mainly collisions with other ships and rough sea conditions. Titanics builders never considered a ship would side swipe an iceberg and open her hull with an over 100 foot long section of damage that completely compromised titanic's safety features. Titanic was designed to stay aflot with the first four compartments breached or any two adjacent ones. The iceberg breached 5 1/2 of these compartments which meant the ship was surely doomed.
The titanic's sister ship the Olympic had an accident early in 1911 with the HMS Hawke naval cruiser which punctured near the Olympics stern. It breached 2 compartments but only went about 10 feet into the Olympic's hull, the Olympic of course survived this incident with not much issue, required about 6 weeks in drydock to repair the damage. The Olympic then got conscripted into war service during WW1 as a troop transport ship, escaped a few attack attempts from german ships including a torpedo that punctured her hull but never actually detonated. Then the Olympic deliberately ran into a german u-boat sinking the german sub and managed to carry on under her own steam. So the Olympic actually proved that the Olympic class ships including Titanic and the later Britannic (lost in WW1) were actually sounds ships with more than adequate safety features. Titanic's misfortune was just the nature of the accident in gernral.

I have been a subscriber for a while now and I love the fact that you sit together and talk about what's going on and getting two unique perspectives. James Cameron actually did all of Jack's drawings in the film, including the one of Rose wearing the Heart of the Ocean. Those are his hands being filmed as he's sketching her. (Is there anything he can't do? Maybe he's terrible at singing.)

Saw titanic in cinema around 15 times when I was six years. The one time my dad came he looked at my reaction during the painting scene. He’s probably so upset it was jack I was all in for. Great reaction vid.
They called LOST IN SPACE the “Iceberg” that sank the Titanic because it was the film that knocked it off the #1 spot.

I haven't watched your whole reaction yet, but this child looks to be about the age (how old are you, Sweetie?) that I was when I first saw the movie...with my parents. To say the drawing scene was awkward would be an understatement.

The rooms they were assigned b52,54,56 was Ismays room. The line when the father says it’s only for a little while is an actual real scene.
But Rose's stateroom is styled after Straus suite C-55,57.
This reminds me of watching this movie with my son when he was about that age. He had a very tendency to get bored with movies and wander off or play while it was playing in the background or something. But he was absolutely RIVETED by this film. It was the first time I'd ever seen him sit still more than a few minutes.

Billy Zane also starred in "Dead Calm" with Sam Neill and Nicole Kidman (early in her career). Zane also starred in "Back to the Future " as a member of Biff's high school gang.
Molly Brown was a real person on board the Titanic. She was looked down upon by many of the upper-class passengers because she was from "new money" and not an aristocrat. She is played by Oscar-winner, Kathy Bates.
Actress Debbie Reynolds played Molly Brown in the 1964 film, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown."

In my 70 years I've seen many hollywood versions of the titanic, this one being the best. The first version "Titanic" was made 1953 a year before I was born. Peace ✌️ Gary

Actually 3 films alone about RMS Titanic came out in the year which she sank in 1912 for a total of 6 films made before 1953's Titanic. Interestingly one of them was made in 1942 in Nazi Germany which portrays the fictional German first officer as the only hero. This film was shot on the German liner SS Cap Arcona which was later sunk in 1945 by the RAF in the Baltic Sea when it was packed with Nazi concentration prisoners which resulted in the loss of 7,000 people - nearly six times the number that died on the Titanic.
I was obsessed with this movie when I was a kid. The fabulous sets and costuming was fascinating. Once I got older and the gravity of what happened hit me, I can’t watch it without getting super emotional.
What an absolute cutie that boy is, you can tell he’s a very smart boy and that you’re a good father. Always love to find new reactors!

If you have VR or a can use a friend's VR, I recommend it.
Fun facts: Leonardo doesn’t actually draw Rose. The director, James Cameron, is the one who actually draws Rose. James Cameron also directed Terminator, Aliens, and the Avatar he also drew all the pictures in jack’s sketchbook. Also, James went down to the actual titanic site in a submarine and that’s some of the footage you see. He also went down to the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, in 2012. He’s one incredible man.
Lastly, your son has a beautiful heart. Full of empathy for others.and he picks up on a ton of the story and understands a lot of what is happening. That’s sadly not the case for many, especially at his age. You have a special man in your son. Thanks for sharing him with us.

I was 8 when I first saw this film and I didn't catch anything much except history and a love/romance. Now that I am older, I see so many iconic things in this film. I also hate Cal as a character but goodness, I appreciate Billy Zane's acting in this film so much. He made me hate Cal. lol

how old is that kid,6,7,8 at best???? i genuinly feel sorry for the new generations to come. they missed out on so much good stuff from back in the 90s. a era goneby sadly but it was one of the best times for sure. i was 9 when titanic was released,yes seen it on the big screen (times 97,2012,2022) it never gets old. im surprised that kid knows quite some basics for his age.titanic became that instant cult classic,and survived the time.25 years later it still gives packed cinema's which proves WHY it won best movie in 97'. dispite titanic being told over and over again since 1912,somehow nobody done it better than cameron captivating a audiance for decades and mixes real with fake storylines and events. which is part of the succes i think.,have good storytelling,the right producer and a good score,and voila

I just saw a Night to Remember from the 50's a few nights ago. It's not that bad, of course Cameron has the better effects.
My 12 year old was shocked when i said the footage of the ship under the water is the real footage from the director himself.
Idk about the underwater safe part but most of the reveal of the ship is real footage
