      thing is, its not, bad story telling would be here is a hero (Jon) here is the prophecy (azor Ahai) oh it happened, what a shock, thats bad storytelling, in the very story the prophecy is in they also warn you not to trust in prophecy. in the first book the prophecy of Rhaego (Dany's son the stallion that will mount the world ) was a thing, but it didn't come true did it?.
      its good story telling because you had so many choices about who azor ahai could be, but is it actually clear what he will do? what is lightbringer? (i think lightbringer is Arya btw, Jon gave her her first weapon) the part about plunging a weapon into his lovers heart wasn't about the weapon but about bringing the dawn itself (killing Dany)

      That's the thing, they were just theories and not really in line with the show. More so in line with the books as possibilities. Then again, if a theory is too detailed it is most likely never to come true for fans who hope it might be. I figure by now that people will just give up that the show went a different direction than the books are going a different direction. A no need to compare them anymore. But also that D&D seemed to be real lazy with this season and last (in my opinion) season. They lost their passion and care they once had.

      @marleymarss Před 4 lety +1

      @@M7md_n29er Yes, the main story from the show was indeed mostly about Danny and Jon. They were the ones for the most part driving the story forward. But I have to be completely honest, Jon was my least favorite and never understood why so many fans liked him. But hey, that's just me. And yes, all that character development (for 8 years) we have followed these two all these years, feels wasted and all logic out of the window. I can understand Danny's arc from naive young woman to being a villain. It makes sense, but how D&D approached her character journey, the development (transforming) of how she got there, didn't make sense and rushed. Same with Jon's journey as well. I do feel like D&D knew where they were going with the story and knew how they wanted to end the show. It's good to know when show runners know the end to the story and a direction, but even show runners have changed their endings because of the writing process changing and so much more. And based on the writing from S7 and S8, feels like D&D were tired and really wanting to work on different projects. Understandably being a show runner takes a toll on anyone, but there is a thing called passion. D&D didn't seem to feel as passionate than they were in the beginning or excited. Which is why all the characters' endings felt abrupt and many of us are like "What?"

      And Lightbringer isn't so much a sword but it's still quite the powerful weapon. Lightbringer is Jon. Lightbringer was said to be attempted to be forged twice before it was successfully forged. Was just about to mention this too. In the show you see Ned place Arthur Dayne's sword Dawn at the foot of the bed when Jon is being born. The camera also focuses on it for a second, I think to show its importance. They didn't have to show the camera angle of Ned placing it down, but they did. Dawn is also forged from a fallen star, so a sort of "bleeding star" (since the trail would give the impression of it "bleeding"). You could also have Lyanna bleeding after birth, so a quite literal "bleeding".

Jaime Lannister is reborn after he passes out in the sauna with Brienne (steam representing smoke) and when he "shares the salt" with Roose Bolton, where Roose spares Jaime's life. This scene is in the books and the show, and yes there is a ham in the show. Plus the red star bleeds is not the red comet. That is a comet, not a star. The red star is the sigil of House Martell, and that star bleeding is Oberyn getting killed by the Mountain. Plus darkness gathering is Bran meeting the 3 eyed crow. Yes, Bran is most likely the bad guy (hence why he is always cloaked in darkness in his dreams) and Jaime is the savior of humanity. That's why he's always shining golden.

It would feel a little cheap to me if Dany swooped in to be the saviour, personally.

    • @princessshei9171
      @princessshei9171 Před 2 lety +61

      Jon is the red herring here, not Dany. A Game of Thrones starts with The Others and ends with Azor Ahai, Dany and the dragons are the fire that will destroy the ice. She completes the entire Azor Ahai/Lightbringer ritual in the first book before the prophecy is even introduced in A Clash of Kings, which is classic George to give us the answer before asking the question. She is the first and only POV character to witness the comet in the first book, she places Drogon's egg under Drogo's left arm to be nearest to his heart so she pulls Lightbringer from her lovers heart just as Azor Ahai did to Nissa Nissa, she walks into the flames herself and is reborn amidst salt and smoke, she wakes dragons from stone, and her chapters are the only ones to mention "the song of ice and fire". Xaro calls the dragons "a flaming sword above the world" and they are described as "fire made flesh and warm to the touch" just as Lightbringer was a flaming sword that was warm as Nissa Nisaa had been warm. Nissa Nissa’s dying screams as Lightbringer was forged left a crack across the moon, this calls back to Doreah's story of the sun (Drogo) wandering too close to the moon (Dany) and it cracking bringing forth dragons. There's also Dany's "slayer of lies" prophecy where she sees "glowing like sunset, a red sword was raised in the hand of a blue eyed King who cast no shadow". The vision acknowledges Stannis as a king so the only lie left to slay about him is his claim to Azor Ahai. The sword is described as glowing vs burning. When Jon is fighting at the wall he wishes for "a dragon or three", I think his purpose is to forewarn and assist in the Battle for the Dawn vs being the main hero. His entire story is built around him embracing the Stark identity he so craves and he's heavily tied with the magic of the Old Gods rather than the magic of R'hollor. I think he's a head of the dragon but not Azor Ahai. He's the result of Rhaegar doing the one thing you're not supposed to do with prophecy; guess it/induce it unnaturally. Dany, as of the end of the books, still has no idea who Azor Ahai is but she is a perfect subversion of the prophecy.

    I just realized now how the reveal of Jon as Azor Ahai could have been during a battle vs. the Night King or his White Walkers, Longclaw was thrown to a Dragon's mouth and due to the pain the dragon breathes fire to the sword and Jon would have to remove it from its mouth-- A burning Valerian sword unsheathed by a Targaryen Stark from the fire.

      @mikeplaysit Před 8 lety

      ***** Well of course. I'm just saying, I got the impression that they weren't simply doing it to melt the snow, but to guarantee his victory. Just as Melisandre "guaranteed" his victory at Blackwater. I don't know if Stannis would have sacrificed Shireen simply to melt the snow and have a _chance_ at victory. Because you have to remember, it's not like it's giving Stannis and advantage while the Boltons remain disadvantaged. The Boltons reap the rewards of the sacrifice also. Now, when fighting against white walkers on the other hand, sure, snow melting and a heat wave would seem to definitely be an advantage to the humans, while being a disadvantage to the white walkers.

    • @mikeplaysit
      @mikeplaysit Před 8 lety

      ***** Though, in these times, I don't think it would be considered that Stannis had an heir. Well, in the traditional sense, to carry on the Baratheon name. Because when a woman gets married (not always during modern times, I don't know if it's common or even allowed in mideval/fantasy game of thrones times) she takes the last name of the groom and is no longer carries her last name. So she wouldn't be Shireen Baratheon, she would be, let's say, Shireen Stark. So Stannis' name doesn't carry on. Either way, sacrificing any children, whether they have the means to carry on the family legacy or not seems, a bit much.

    My favorite uh "theory" (I guess? maybe more like fanfic) is that A Dream of Spring will be all about The Others overrunning the world as neither Dany nor Jon turn out to be Azor Ahai, with the penultimate chapter being the Iron Throne being covered in snow. Then, the last chapter is titled "The Prince that was Promised" and will be from Rhaegar's PoV as he rides off to the battle of the trident to be killed by Robert Baratheon (implying that his death then doomed the rest of the world to eternal winter).
    I think someone even wrote a little fanfiction of that but I can't find it at all.

Stephen King did something very similar in his Dark Tower series and so did, to a lesser extent, the Cirque du Freak series. However, for a series like Song of Ice and Fire, I wouldn't particularly want that kind of "go fuck yourself" ending. I would prefer something more akin to the ending of Wheel of Time series if anything, another epic series that had weird things happening throughout.

    I personally find the theory that Rhaegar is Azor Ahai and Jon is his sword, the lightbringer, to be far more interesting. That his whole reason for starting the war by running off with Lyanna was to fulfill the prophecy and possibly visions he was having. Knowingly condemning thousands to their deaths all to bring about the man that would save the world.
    Daenerys fits a lot more of the criteria, but I don't see her path following that of a savior and hero, but more of a mad tyrant like her father. Of course the show portrays this awfully and nonsensically, but Martin has said that D&D were aware of the true ending. I don't think they displayed it even close to properly and most likely changed a lot about it to fit it into a couple episodes, but Daenerys going mad in the end is probably true. Especially when considering how much more brutal and cutthroat she is becoming during her rule.
    Regardless I just hope that Martin finishes ASOIAF before he dies.

      Dany and her dragons are going to help burn those wights but she is not going to win the final battle without Jon's help who is going to rally the ground forces and Bran too with his immense magical powers will play a huge part. A thought for Hodor he held the fucking door he too was a chosen one, sacrificing his life and sanity for Bran he is just as special as any of them.
      It is never one person who saves the world ultimately, Bran will be leading the magical forces, Dany the aerial forces with her dragons, and Jon the ground forces with his Valyrian sword and Jon might as well be the last one standing fighting the last WW but it will be a combination effort by everyone.

Thus far we have seen the Red God's power in action, and the Faith of the Seven has been relatively useless, divisive, and uninvolved with the events of the book and show. I think it is a great twist that the faith of the seven, would literally mean the world's faith in it's seven living saviors. djj 125 the hero must have a hero's blade ... like none that had ever been ... plunged into water ... captured a lion ... he knew what he must do ... know that I love you best of all that is in this world ... he thrust the smoking sword through her living heart ... her blood and her soul and her strength and her courage all went into the steel ...
      What's the fastest route from Slaver's Bay to Westeros?
      The Smoking Sea.
      What's in the Smoking Sea?
      Smoke and salt, of course.
      What else is in the Smoking Sea?
      Brightroar, a super badass Valyrian sword that was plunged into the water.
      Why hasn't it been recovered?
      Most sailors fear the Smoking Sea and avoid it.
      Who are the bravest sailors in the world?
      The Ironborn.
      Where are they?
      On their way to pick up Dany and take her back to Westeros.
      Would Victarion want to prove that he's Euron's equal by sailing the Smoking Sea?
      You bet.
      Will Dany be keen to take a shortcut to get there faster when she hears that a fake Targaryen is stealing her birthright?
      Absolutely.
      Who did Dany promise to give a super badass Valyrian sword to as soon as she has one?
      Jorah.
      Who captured a lion?
      Jorah.
      Who loves a woman more deeply and passionately than anyone else in the series?
      Jorah.
      Who's going mad and may have to be killed by someone in her inner circle?
      Daenerys.
      What character could be killed to give a sword maximum power against the Others?
      Daenerys.
      What's the worst thing GRRM could do to Jorah?
      Make him kill Daenerys.
      What is now branded into Jorah's face?
      A demon mask.
      Brightroar is done being tempered in the water.
      It will be pulled from the smoke and salt and presented to Demon Jorah.
      He will kill Daenerys in the most powerful act of blood magic possible.
      When he removes the sword, it will be covered in fire and blood.
      He will take the black, as was his father's dying wish.
      He will be the 1000th Lord Commander.
      He will drive back the darkness.
      Demon Jorah is Azor Ahai reborn.

    Azor Ahai is Drogon. Born under a comet, from a burning pile of salt and smoke. He woke from a stone egg. He's part of the three heads of the dragon. Born from targaryen blood. (Dany,s kid was a price paid for their life) lightbringer is just drogon breathing fire.

    My problem with Danny being Azor Ahai is the so far her story has had nothing to do with the Others outside of 1 maybe 2 visions whereas Jon is uniting the free folk and Jon against the others recognizing their threat

      (plus, she was reborn through fire with 3 dragons, who are the lightbringer)

      Alt Shift X I wouldn't disgard Aegon VI. Targaryen completely, he is a very new player in the books and hasn't appeared in the TV series till now, I hope he will. If he really is the one who claimed to be, he fits also lot of parts! A comet (red star) was also seen during his birth in King's Landing, close to the ocean means close to salt, and I'm pretty sure there was smoke somewhere. He has also the blood of Aerys and Rhaelle in his veins through his father Rhaegar and his sword could be BLACKFYRE, the blade of Aegon I. This weapon passed later to the legitimized bastard of Aegon IV who founded House Blackfyre, but it was taken by Bittersteel to Essos where he founded the Golden Company, and they are now on Aegons VI. side, so he could wield Blackfyre. The other parts, let's see! Perhaps he will marry and sacrifice his love and there are still dragons in Meereen, and he could get his hands on them

    Is there an explanation WHY Melisandre so desperatly tries to influence Stannis, make him Azor Ahai etc.? I mean, where did she come from? Why did she choose him? It can't be that easy. But i'm not finished with the books yet, so maybe i'll find out.

      +BravesSheet Supposedly her earlier visions lead her to Stannis at Dragonstone but she does claim to misinterpret them herself sometimes. She comes from Asshai. She also believes a Stone Dragon could have been awoken on Dragonstone if she had a sacrifice of Kings blood.

    • @BravesSheet
      @BravesSheet Před 8 lety +2

      Hm, the "Dragonstone"-thing makes sense, but it's hard to believe that a woman from Asshai would travel the whole way just for an old castle on the other side of the world. Otherwise, her belief in the Red God seems to be veeeery strong.

    I love going back to your old videos and listen to them cause it gets me reconsidering some things.
    A thought I just had that I haven't heard yet, is the ides that Mel may turn around and burn Stannis for King's Blood when she realizes Jon is likely Azor Ahai. And how fitting would that be? The very thing that has driven Stannis to appalling actions and questionable choices is the very thing turns on him and becomes his undoing.

  • @michaelhenman4887
    @michaelhenman4887 Před 9 lety +113

    I don't really think your dismissal of Stannis over his personality really holds water. Don't get me wrong I doubt very much that he is, mostly due to Lightbringer not being lightbringer, Melisandre trying too hard and him being the first candidate we are given.
    However your statement about him not being a hero basically boils down to you saying, he's not young, attractive, and unlike Jon and Dany doesn't have social obstacles (bastardy and being female) in the way of him achieving power.
    He may be harsh and cold, but was it really kind for Jon to threaten Gilly as he did? Was it righteous for Dany to allow torture of witnesses and crucify 163 people, most of whom had nothing to do with the murder of the slave children?
    All the characters have their edges, Stannis more than anyone, as some have pointed out there are many who are complex morally, but few could fit the bill for both hero and villain as Stannis does. I don't think this necessarily excludes him from being Azor Ahai, in some ways he fits it better that anyone (though to be clear once again, I severely doubt he is), he was willing to sacrifice Edric Storm, even though he hated the idea, he is the only one who arrived at the wall to help defend against the wildlings and the others, and is the only king that understands the real threat beyond the wall, he sees himself dying during his quest in the fire, but he willingly continues anyway because he sees it as his duty.
    Sorry to waste y'alls time with my blatant Stannis fanboyism.

    • @shadedamarion
      @shadedamarion Před 9 lety +38

      Just think of it this way, Melisandre created the salt, smoke, and flaming sword for Stannis. You cant just take a prophecy and recreate it in hopes that it will come true for who you make it for. You have to let the prophecy play out naturally. The way I read and seen it, Melisadre is trying to hard to make Stannis something he can never be. But that's my opinion.,.

    • @michaelhenman4887
      @michaelhenman4887 Před 9 lety +16

      TomaHawkSDCS I agree Stannis almost certainly isn't Azor Ahai, I just complained that I didn't think the assessment of his personality was fair.

    • @AltShiftX
      @AltShiftX  Před 9 lety +23

      Michael Henman Yeah you make a good point. I guess part of what I was trying to say is that Stannis is not a character who we are really able to relate to, as readers. Jon and Dany do have moral complexity, as you say, but the books help us to understand and sympathise with the internal struggles that underlie these moral issues. Stannis, on the other hand, is far harder to connect to on an emotional level, and I think that's important for a hero. But yeah there is ambiguity here.
