Now no matter what D&D would do, previously disappointed people will always keep complaining & find more reasons to justify their criticism. Think & speak, this episode literally or metaphorically fulfilled everything that was set up in the “series", not the books. If fan theories didn't come to life, it's not the show's fault. You can always go & read the books if you're not satisfied, because GOT, as a series, was never meant to satisfy anyone completely with their fantasies.

    The other part of her emulation of Tywin is that she seems to (in the books) only half listen to Tywin's lessons. Like the one about Robert wiping out the Iron Isles. Tywin literally tells Joffrey when he's being Joffrey that you need to both give fire and blood for defiance but then raise people up that bend the knee or else no one would ever bend to you. She just stops at the fire and blood part. It's like she just mimicks what she saw him do without clear understanding of the why. The thing is, in the books, Cersei does not love her children the way she does in the show. In the books she loves them as though they were physical assets. To add to Olenna's claim about her possibly being the worst person she's ever met, there's a fucked-up passage in the books that when Joffrey was younger, he cut open a pregnant cat for kicks, and Robert smacked him so hard for that, but Cersei enables Joffrey's psychotic behavior.

    Tywin told Cersei that he doesn't mistrust her because she's a woman, he mistrusts her because she isn't as smart as she thinks she is. Father knows his daughter well. Yes, Tywin is a horrible monster but even he only kills those who cross him or pose a threat, he isn't overly friendly or nice to anyone but unlike Cersei he doesn't just hate every single person. Jamie did say that Cersei likes no one but her children. Yara neither has dragons, nor did she have a father who loved her unconditionally, she endured her father and became who she wanted to. Cersei was afraid of her father, of Robert, of her son, everything she did, she did because she was a miserable human being. She didn't love her kids or even Jamie. Ofc, Jamie is responsible for the part that he played in that relationship but Cersei unknowingly or knowingly perhaps, had a relationship with Jamie, to slap Tywin Lannister metaphorically. She really wanted to be the one Tywin considered extremely talented, she knew that Tyrion wouldn't get anything but seduced Jamie and bound him by having kids with him. Jamie was the heir, by every right, he could have married a beautiful woman, he could have had kids of his own, could have had a good life. She made sure both her brothers seemed incapable in Tywin's eyes, she didn't have to do much in Tyrion's case. She never realized that Tywin was a miserable human himself, that he could not give her that validation that she desperately craved. One of the reasons why she was an overprotective mother yet wasn't a good mother at all. One of the reasons she hated the Starks so much, they had power but above everything they cared about family and people of the North. Why she hated Sansa so much, Ned got his head cut off because he believed in his 13 year old daughter so much yet her father doesn't even believe her even as a woman. She hated everyone.

    I wouldn't call what Robert felt love. He was infatuated with his mental construct of Lyanna that he created third hand via Ned's talk of her. Lyanna was understandably reluctant about the match, and I feel that if they'd married he'd have ended up much the same as he did in canon when he was forced to reckon with Lyanna as an actual person instead of the creepy one dimensional construct he'd created in his head.

      That's still love. Robert truly loved Lyanna. That doesn't mean he would have been able to overcome his lecherous nature but he clearly meant it in his heart. He probably would have killed her when he got drunk honestly, ironically for giving him stag horns (cucking him) as payback for him doing it to her.
      But we can't know that, clearly Robert was transformed by the trauma of a "perfect" life torn away from him and becoming king is bad for most people's morality. Also Robert was quick to anger but quick to cool and a charismatic friendly guy. Hehe. Loras is waaay too beautiful to threaten Cersei.
      In seriousness I wonder if it ends up being Sansa.
      Cersei is the person responsible for having Sansa's wolf "Lady" executed. I re-read this chapter today and it is incredibly emotional, because of the pure callousness of Cersei (Sansa and Lady had nothing to do with the reason why Cersei has Lady executed). As a character Cercei's only satisfaction is to triumph over others (who hurt her son in this instance), no matter the means.
      Having Lady killed, was the beginning of the awakening of Sansa (symbolically killing the sleeping naive girl in order to become the awakened woman). Jon goes through this transition too. When this happens in a girls life moving into womanhood, there's usually a significant gargantuan ugly moment that awakens them from their blissful ignorant slumber into the awakened carnage of reality. The story of Bluebeard is an example of this awakening of a maiden to the horrors of reality.
      Sansa is married to Tyrion and literally has her own debt to pay for murdering Lady. But I suppose the logical progression for Sansa is to focus on removal of Littlefinger. That seems a like a boring conclusion. I'd much prefer a leftfield outcome we'd never expect =)

    I LOVE the theory of Brienne being the 'more beautiful one' who would take everything away from Cercei, which I was not familiar with before now. Even ignoring the idea of inner beauty (which I certainly will not!), we have already seen hints in the book that Cercei's own beauty is diminishing quickly, partly due to her new fondness for drinking and partly due to aging. I also suspect that as she grows more and more like the Mad King, giving in to paranoia and rage, she too will grow more ragged and unsightly over time. Throw in some mishaps with wildfire, and it may get bad enough that Brienne might actually start looking attractive by comparison.

Tywin tells Cersei to trust “[themselves] alone” and let’s her see the bodies of dead children hanging above the gates of Casterly Rock when she was nothing but a child herself, teaching her that paranoia and excessive cruelty are ok. But OOOH, when she turns to be excessively cruel and paranoid AF, Tywin has the nerve to be all “oH ma GAwd, whY ArE yoU LIkE thIs???” Hypocritical fuck and no right to be giving other people criticism. Literally the only difference between Jaime and Cersei is that Jaime got lucky enough to find someone that could change him where Cersei did not. 17:11 "Ironically it isn't Maggy's prophecy, so much as Cersei's _fear_ of the prophecy". As Varys would say : "Prophecies are fulfilled when men believe in them, no more no less. They're tricks. Shadows on the wall." All fulfilled prophecies are self-fulfilled prophecies, as we can already observe from the prophecies of ancient Greek drama and some historical accounts - where in the place of Maggy the Frog there was Pythia ("Πυθία"), the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
    Interestingly the name "Pythia" itself betrays precisely the above function : "Πυθία" is an ancient Greek version of the modern Greek word "πειθώ" , which simply means "persuasion". Hence if the subjects of the various prophecies did not buy what Pythia said, and in particular did not fear and try to avoid the events of the negative prophecies, then they were safe from them.
    Of course almost everyone believed the pure BS the various Pythias sold them, because supposedly the prophecies (or, quite often, utter ramblings due to intoxication) were dictated by the god Apollo himself..
    By the way, excellent analysis as always, with a very professional looking presentation.

"The accounts made it clear that death did not occur as a result of suicide, but was a self-willed death caused by unconscious will. As a result of a malevolent spell or a curse, the individual felt a breakdown of communications or their good relationship with divine powers. In all cases, the person’s belief that they would shortly die was of crucial importance. When you think about it the prophecy is actually harmless, especially in the show. "You will marry the king" quiet harmless already. "A younger, more beautiful queen will cast you down." Unless she planning on dying early or marrying her son Cersie will be cast down by another Queen since her son, the king, will need to marry. "You will have 3 childeren... gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds" you will have 3 childeren with golden hair(I think thats what it means or maybe 'gold crowns' means her childerens power will come from Lannister gold) and they will die. Like no shit, everyone dies. It doesn't even say that they will die young. Valenquar is the only part of the prophecy thats directly ominous and even that doesn't mean Cersies younger brother just a younger brother.
    If Cersie wasn’t such a bad person maybe she could have lived a long happy life and would be killed crying tears off happines at an event or smthing when a younger borther just assassinate her when she is in her late 90s because someone lost a bet to her or smthing. That would fulfill the prophecy compeletely when her childerens eventually died as well.

      @dragoncurveenthusiast Před 6 lety +16

      I'm not that sure. I'd put the probability for Tyrion lower (maybe 5-10%, at least for the books, I think it's not interesting story-wise) and increase that for "someone else" to 15-20%
      Valyrian doesn't have genders. Thus, the valonqar could also be a little sister. Moreover, it doesn't say YOUR valonqar, just THE valonqar 13:29. So, it could be any little sister or brother. Some people think it's going to be Arya, Cersei is on her death list.
      Interestingly, there's precedence for the potential male misinterpretation of a gender-neutral prophecy. Before his death, maester Aemon convinces himself that Daenerys is the prince that was promised, because the prince was gender-neutral in the valyrian prophecy, so it could also be a princess that was promised and according to Aemon all the other signs fit as well.
      My bets are still on Jaime, though. It would be beautiful, dramatic, a 180 degree turn for the Jaime from earlier while at the same time being a repetition of history (mad king Aerys) and a conclusion to Jaime's redemption arc.

    I always thought that the younger more beautiful queen was lyanna. I know that given how the prophecy is worded it makes it seem like her downfall will come AFTER her kids have died but imo her children dying is her downfall - since they’re the people she cares about the most. Her marriage to Robert and the subsequent death of her children is the result of the aftermath of Robert’s rebellion which wouldn’t have happened if not for lyanna who was younger than Cersei and “more beautiful” in the eyes of some - rhaegar who Cersei was into. Also her being crowned “queen of love and beauty” adds to that. In got we’ve seen that prophecies don’t always work out the way the characters think they do had lyanna running away/ being kidnapped not happened then who knows maybe Cersei would’ve had a better life

  • @zardox78
    @zardox78 Před 6 lety +207

    I take issue with the statement that "Robert loved Lyanna". They go to great lengths in both versions of the story to show us that Robert loved an idea that he had that LOOKED like Lyanna. That is called "infatuation" not "love". Plus a good 45% of that supposed love came from the fact that marrying her would make his best friend his brother ("by-law"). The other 55% stemmed from the fact that she was pretty and had a wild spirit. Who she actually was underneath that didn't seem to factor in.
    Book-Ned is so frustrated by Robert's constant pining away for the perfect life he thinks he would've had with his fantasy version of Lyanna that at one point he blurts out "You didn't even know her." Show-Robert openly admits that he can't even remember what she looked like. Because what she looked like and who she actually was is not important. What she represented to him is all he knows of her.

    • @beckip8073
      @beckip8073 Před 6 lety +52

      Very well put, plus I would add Robert hated kingship, he liked rebellion and fighting but afterwards grew fat and bored- Lyanna represents that 'happy' rebellion period.

    • @paulchambers8135
      @paulchambers8135 Před 6 lety +27

      agree, but infatuation is the wrong word because by definition infatuation is short-lived. I would say Robert was obsessed with the idea of Lyanna, not the person who Lyanna was.

    • @zardox78
      @zardox78 Před 6 lety +2

      Coach Cro Does Robert seem emotionally dead to you? I'd say he's having a pretty damn good time in 50% of the scenes he's in. Sometimes he was angry or morose. But he obviously still had plenty of live emotions.
      But to answer your question, sure. It just depends on how much you've built it up in your own mind. Hell, you can wallow in self-pity for the rest of your life for any old random reason. People do it all the time. He fought a huge war and ended a dynasty, ostensibly for a chick who just wasn't all that into him. But the fantasy version of her in his mind was just as crazy about him as he was about her. That person never actually existed.
      Yes, this is an extreme case of infatuation fueled by insane circumstances. So if you want to argue semantics, there may be a more apt term to describe an infatuation that has been built up over years and years to such ludicrous proportions. "Obsession" maybe?

    • @coachcro7722
      @coachcro7722 Před 6 lety +7

      Hmm yes a married man with "three children" and what does he do? He only talks of Lyanna, he doesn't love his wife, he doesn't love "his" children and he's drunk most of the time. Does this sound like happiness to you?

    Another popular fan theory is that the young beauty to usurp her will be Sansa, as whilst Margaery is never actually stated to be as beautiful or more than Cersei, Sansa is actually compared to Cersei directly in a way that suggests she is at least as beautiful and potentially more.
    At least in this outcome Sansa would get to do something other than be a massive pain
