Well well, this video comes out two days after i did a similar bit of work to my s60, same symptoms with knotchy steering due to a seized uj, luckily i have managed to unseize mine so it lives to fight another day plus i cant afford a new one yet, a few tips for anyone who is going to do this job diy style, removing the strut brace it gives you a lot more room in the engine bay to get to the rack end, inside the car if you pull back the carpet you can get to the circlip that holds the big rubber shroud/boot in place, the circlip will release with just your fingers, this makes it so much easier to refit the bearing on the column because you can fit the bearing into the rubber shroud/boot then just slide the lot down the shaft back into place, adds a few mins to the job but prevents the struggle in relocating the bearing back into the shroud/boot as shown in the video, hope this input is useful to someone. Oh and watch your ribs on the door aperture while you are in the foot well, just cracked the same rib for the 3rd time on this part of my car.

Regarding the when scrub, I bought a Trackrite gauge that you just drive over in a straight line and it'll show if the tyres are scrubbing at all. Might be work a go? I must admit this is the only alignment I've done to my own car and touch wood it seems to have done the trick.

Nice work there mate. Great video by giving me a perspective on my issue. Much appreciated.
I am curious to know why exactly did you changed that part? Was it because the tire is getting worn out from the side?
I have an issue with my volvo s60 2004. The steering does not come back to the center smoothly after turning. I changed both top strut mounts but the issue remains. I am afraid maybe the complete steering column is faulty which is causing this issue.
My mechanic is ripping me off by failing to identify the issue and keeps on changing other parts like strut mounts and tie rods but the issue remains. The steering does not return to the center after turning.
Also how did you identify the exact part number of UJ ?

Thank you very much! The steering becomes notchy when the UJ is damaged and will stick incrementally. If you buy the part direct from Volvo they can find the correct part number using the vin or you can use VIDA. Otherwise you just need to identify which of the 2 power steering variations are used and you can see this by the unions on the rack and pump.

Hi, my XC70 03 has a lot of play in the steering wheel. If it put grips around the lower UJ i can see there's movement where it bolts inside to the upper column. It looks like the plastic bit at around 12:50 is missing from my car. Is that important?

Question, I’m getting a creaking noise on mine v70 d5 2004. I noticed the bearing on the rubber actually sitting on top of the rubber. I’m getting a creaking noise when turning left and right any ideas ? Bottom arms both just been done for MOT.

The strurt bearings are probably worn out or dirt has gotten up there. Clean it up and use som WD-40 to get grime and stuff away. Clean it out as best you can. I had the same and cleaned it out and it worked wonders.
