Volvo V70/S60 P2 Steering Rack Removal - How To DIY (possibly XC90/S80)

  • This week I replaced the steering rack on the V70 just in time for my 600 mile weekend for Goodwood Revival 2021.
    Due to my unit being full with the M135i project I had to do it on the lift at my friends workshop, probably lucky I did too because it's no quick job!

    Absolutely perfect video. THANKS!! The job was still a struggle, but that was because Volvo apparently called these cars back and changed the rack including the pipes, so when my dealer looked it up on the VIN he got the wrong part and we had to return it. Bla bla... But the video made everything logical. I am impressed with how well you get the weird angles filmed :)

    Just changed mine on my 2009 v70, did it myself on axle stands, not too bad to do tbh, didn't need the second jack for the engine, didn't need to take the boost hose off either. 2 things to mention though, there is supposed to be a small non return valve on the supply hose to the rack (top hose), this is about the size of a button cell battery and sits infront of the hose in the rack, it fell out when I removed the hose from the rack, I realised what it was and checked my new to me rack to be fitted and sure enough it didn't have one, so I fitted the one that fell out to the new rack before I attached the hoses. Second thing to mention is that the thread length on my new track rods were longer than the old ones so I couldn't replicate the tracking settings. Cheers for the informative video, it was a big help!

    replaced mine with a reconditioned rack, now I don't have enough adjustment in the tie rods :/ I fear I have wrong length inners and/or outters, I see autodoc lists many different length inner rods, but I think the measurement difference is in the length of the rack side threads so wont help my situation, my next though is shorter outer rods but its turning into a frankenstein, wish me luck brethren

    Amazing video, thank you. I just had my steering rack replaced with a refurbished unit and it isn’t 100%. The steering is little tighter/firmer when turning right but left is fine. Also only when parallel parking I hear a light knock coming from the steering. It’s been back to the mechanic and says no issues with air/bubbles and pump is also fine. He couldn’t simulate the knock but visually all looks ok. Are you able to advise what may be causing these symptoms? Thanks in advance.

    • @IAMASPANNER
      @IAMASPANNER  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Santosh, glad to help. I get similar knocks in my steering, my car seems to get through bottom ball joints pretty quickly too. I guess I’d just suggest having all the suspension components checked as well as the sub frame bushes.

    • @IAMASPANNER
      @IAMASPANNER  Před 18 dny

      You don’t have to but it’s likely if you don’t it’ll damage the UJ and you’ll need to replace it like I did on mine a year or so later.

    Thanks for the video!! I plan on doing this job on friday. :) The only thing I found strange is that I've got a oxygen sensor cable, aswell as two transmission cables / gear shifter cables that need to be disconnected - because they were blocking the rack from getting out. I'm guessing because your car is English (steering wheel on the right side).

    • @IAMASPANNER
      @IAMASPANNER  Před rokem +1

    • @IAMASPANNER
      @IAMASPANNER  Před 2 lety

      Hi Nathan, that’s very kind and I’m really glad to help! I can’t remember if I put it in the video but if you’re struggling with it you can separate the column inside the car which is much easier, that way you’ll be able to remove the bit you’re struggling with away from the car. It also may be easier to swap this part to the new rack before refitting too, sorry if that wasn’t clear in the video. Good luck!

      It took me approximately 7 hours to do the whole job so I’d suggest a garage that isn’t recording like I am could do it in 6 hours. So 6 hours labour plus the cost of parts I’d hope.
