      I hope you come to the south again. Maybe you can come to Alabama or Mississippi to hear the southern accents. You know in Alabama coke is a general name for soda and I have never heard anyone get confused. Before I started doing accent challenges I had no ideas other states called it something else.

    WV here. My daughter is living with friends in New Hampshire. They came down for a visit and my daughter immediately went crazy about how the "sweet tea" up North is like unsweetened water and insisted her Northern friends needed to drink "real" sweet tea from here at home. They were blown away and have now said they are bringing me "sweet tea" from New Hampshire next time they come down to show me just how watery and unsweet the sweet tea is. Her friends also like to listen to me talk, my daughter's accent fell off a little up there but dips back in when she's home. My daughter says my accent is thicker depending on my mood or what I'm talking about. I guess when I get all wound up I sound real hillbilly.

      It’s literally below the Mason Dixon line, according the U.S. Census, google, Wikipedia, and literally any other official source it’s a southern state. I’m not even from WV and I can tell you this.
      Just because it’s not Deep South like SC, GA, AL, MS, and LA, doesn’t mean it’s not south.
      Kentucky, W.Va, Va, all southern states too.

    • @jKLa
      @jKLa Před 9 měsíci

      @@HeyBigChriss It is actually Appalachian. Greater Appalachian in the cultural sense (not geographic) can be argued as being a form of Southern culture but it is actually a pre Southern culture that is one of the main American parent cultures of true Southern Culture, along with the Chesapeake Virginian culture (which is also in Southern and Eastern Maryland and Southern Delaware). Appalachian culture, especially in its Southern reaches, was then partly Southernized by migration from the deep South.
      Likewise with the Chesapeak (sometimes called "Tidewater") Culture which has sence also been diluted in part by mid Atlantic- Midland culture. Yet it remains substantially Southern in chericter as well, except for most of the DC area which isn't really part of any surrounding regional cultures these days, although it's exurbs still are to an extent.
      But State lines or the historical Mason- Dixon line do NOT define what is Southern CULTURE today. Most of Southern Ohio or nearly all of Southern Indiana or Illinois other then the St. Louis area for example is predominantly part of Greater Appalachia culturally but with substantial lower Southern and Midwestern influence. On the other hand parts of Maryland and Delaware are Chesapeake Southern but niether is a Southern state overall despite being South of the Historic Mason-Dixon line.

    • @jKLa
      @jKLa Před 9 měsíci

      @@HeyBigChrissin other words your definition of Southern is acurate in terms of "official" geographic regions, but that is NOT the same as cultural or historic settlement based definitions. There is more then one definition of "The South". Yours is NOT the one most comonly used or relavent today however and does NOT reflect the main cultural boundaries today, and you can read many history sociology books telling you as much.
      What is today Southern culture was largely formed by the synthesis of migrants and settlers from these two regional cultures over time along with West African (from the huge slave population), Caribbean, French Huguenot and somw other French, other British Isles but mainly Southern English, Welsh, Northern British Scots-Irish as well as many Irish Catholics who came without preasts and largely converted to Protestantism in America.
