your videos are getting bad.
So I fly across the country to share this event with you, and you respond with this? C’mon
“I do Cars” says we love you too
why do you have to be a party pooper ?
Block em Ray Block em!haha
Nobody likes the haters!!
Wow, that's quite the Fiat owner response right there. Someone piss in your Journey's gas tank or something? Rather than complaining, why not go out there and make better videos?
I like the new Generation 3 wrench. It's a good thing Lauren is there to keep an eye on Ray, otherwise he'd be coming home with all sorts of new toys!
That's why she's there, she now holds the purse strings.
Only thing the gen 3 seems to miss is a 3/8" or 1/2" square drive (breaker bar hole ) to counteract obscene amounts of torque applied by someone else . That would be perfection.
He might anyway lol.
There is always a work around, order it online. 😂😂😂. Of course, there will be hell to pay when she finds out. Shrug.
I have been wanting this for awhile. I have a wall of oil filter wrenches and none seems to work well or fit right.
I still resort to a hammer and screwdriver through the old filter for removing hard ones and just hand tight for tightening.
This morning a puddle of oil was under my car from the oil filter leaking and it was less than hand tight.
I guess the hand tight eventually loosened up again.
Great to see that Lauren has been able to attend SEMA this year. The new gen 3 wrenches look great. Hope you all have lots of fun!
^wife unit
When I worked as a oil changer at a car dealership in the late 70s to early 80s. We had to use the band type, the oil filter didn't have flutes and sometimes I would have to hammer a large screwdriver through the middle and loosen them up with the screwdriver. Things sure have gotten better.
If need be used the screwdriver 🪛 trick and on many of our truck and tractors filters I used my trusty 18 inch channel locks.
That's all I use is the band/strap wrench
I like how wife unit had to "lefty loosey" as she decided how to untwisterate the oil filter :)
The JM3 wrench is neat.... but at the end of the day, you can't beat the universal fit of a strap wrench... I've never failed to get an automotive filter off with one. The ONLY filter I failed to remove with one was the original filter on my log splitter... It was practically welded on.. crushed it seven ways to Sunday... I think I ended up having to drive a big screwdriver through it to get it off.
It needs a square drive at the end of the handle so you can connect a 1/2" breaker bar in extreme cases.
Seeing my favorite mechanic hanging out with other great mechanics just makes me smile. I probably should get the wrench that fits the k&n 2006 cause I use deep filter on my 05 Chevy 5.3. But I'll just keep stabbing a long screw driver through to make it happen. Great video. Good to see wife unit defeat the over cranked filter with that thing.
Ford boss and Rainman Ray did a joint venture sometime ago where they shared each others life stories/journeys to become the auto repair pros they are today. It’s insightful. I get Ford Boss can come across as rough around the edges, but when you understand his past and all that he has had to overcome his demeanor makes more sense in that context. I appreciate all the content from both these guys
I'm working on it man I am getting better, I have been going to business management classes and I have been going to communication school on how to address and deal with things differently and all I can say is I'm working on it but I do appreciate the fact that you understand and do support
I get you Rich.
Totally agree, that was a great collaboration and both videos provided a rare view behind the curtain into how these 2 masters of the auto repair world got to where they are.
Big respect Rich, we all have some rough edges, some just a little easier to spot than others.... Your continued effort to learn, grow and succeed demonstrates your commitment to yourself and those around you. It's easy to talk a big game, not everyone can back it up with actions and you deserve to be commended for "walking the talk".
@@hot_wheelz tyvm I know Ray Appreciates It And So Do I
I had a filter tool that was like a steel spring that wrapped around the filter with a 1/2" square drive hole at center. Never had one I couldn't get off after that. Gave it to the youngest boy, he's a motor head. :)
I have 2 of those, a large and a small. Never found a filter that I couldn't get off. Never even marks the filter. If the can is destroyed, I chisel the what's left of the can off even with the base. Then use a chisel or a punch against the holes in the base. Works every time. I got several off in a DIYers driveway. Messy but easy.
The 4th gen should have a "torque wrench" click when tightening so you don't over tighten!
thankyou Ray,enjoy your break and see you in the next one,,👌👍
I always used a 15" or larger slip joint pliers to take oil filters off in the 70s, worked really well
I've seen people stab them with a big screwdriver and use the handle to torque them off when someone overtightened them prior. Crude method, but it worked.
I used an 18 inch channel locks on many filters when working on farm equipment over the years.
Awesome! Thanks for taking us with you Ray!
I'm reading a book on the history of lubrication, it's non-friction.
This guy
Haha very good !
🤣🤣🤣
Definitely seems like a great tool. I can see the narrow profile also being a huge asset in an overpacked engine compartment.
I prefer a screwdriver through the side because one size fits all filters 😊
Good day to you Ray...great job Lauren on getting that filter off I hope you both have a great time in Vegas you both deserve some away time for yourselves have fun guys!!!😊😊
About 1980 girlfriend bought a used '75 Chevy Luv. I could not get the oil filter off for anything, broke two strap wrenches. I tried the screwdriver through technique, that just tore the oil filter off. I took some time off, then saw the threaded oil filter nipple assembly bolted to the engine case, so unbolted that and put that in my bench vise. Then 1 hour more to chisel the base of the filter off the threaded nipple, simply amazing. Had I only known in advance....a shop would've got the job instead of me !
We all know Ray is the real superstar at the booth.
I used to work the pits at Jiffy Lube and Oil Express back in the 90s, and I think the worst car to change an oil filter on, was an early / mid 80s Nissan Maxima with the v6. Kevlar sleeves and destroyed knuckles were the order of the day.
Old 82 Ford Escort was a cast iron bitch. Same for a 1980 Pontiac 4.9 turbo motor.
Sunfires with auto transmission.. where you had to go throught some god awful stretching to get to the oil filter
The late 80s - early 90s Saab 900 turbo is a real design winner, with the filter so close to the starter power line. I've seen a few guys weld the filter wrench after hitting the connector stud.
A cool idea, but many engines just don't have the clearence for that to work. Gm 4.3, 4 wheel drive is an example.
Hope you have a great time at SEMA. Enjoy.
Your videos are a great start to my day, Ray. Nice to see the Wife Unit involved too, and visiting the industry expos lets us see another side of the legend, aka Rainman Ray.
I have never seen an oil filter with so many flutes. I may have to get this special oil filter wrench for my toolbox.
Thanks Ray. I can hardly wait. 😊
I have an strap style oil filter wrench that I have had for over 60 years now that I have never failed to remove even the tightest Oil filter. The metal handle is sized for a 1/2 inch socket wrench . Always works. Always. Some of the comments talk about stabbing a screwdriver into the filter. Before I had my strap wrench, I actually wrecked a filter with a screwdriver before I could remove it. Ended up using a chisel and hammer to remove that one.
Love, love, love this. Thanks!
Appreciate the demonstration details in your video, as always!
Ray, thanks for the demo. Just pre-ordered the new gen-3!!
I like generation 3. Bad Mama Jama 🤣 Great Job Lauren 👍🏻 Enjoy the rest of the time, Ray and Lauren. Look forward to the next video.
I love that filter removal tool. I bought the old one that looks like pliers and boy did it mess up my filter
Thanks for sharing SEMA with us Ray 👍 glad I held off on getting the Gen2, definitely going to snag me a Gen3.
I have to have three different oil filter wrenches for 4 cars, Can never remember the one I need. I'll be buying this one.
I've changed thousands of filters and some have been real mothers. Ironically the worst was on my own newly acquired used truck; the can would spin but the base stayed put. Busted it apart and had to weld a couple studs on an old socket to engage the ports in the base.
folks just need to learn to hand tighten their filters
1st or 2nd! GOOD THURSDAY AFTERNOON RAY AND THE WIFE UNIT! SEMA! And the two new employees! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
I found a really great oil filter adapter for my 1/2” impact, you should try it!
😂
🤣
That's a really cool product. I wouldn't use it going back on, but would be nice for the tough filters.
The crazy thing is, if certain mechanics wouldn't crank oil filters down, there would be no need for a tool like this. Having said that, it does look like a great tool to have if you do frequent oil changes.
Are you suggesting that every fastener be hand tight?
@@michaelnomura5196 Where in my reply did I mention fasteners? We are talking about oil filters which, in most applications, only need to be hand tight.
Thanks for sharing ray and wife unit
Cheers from Nova Scotia
Now you need to invent a tool that will overcome the idiots that torque on lug nuts to the point they can only be removed with a torch, where even hi-torque impact wrenches can't budge them.
Any Wrench that will make the Mechanic's Life Easier is a Godsend, All Mechanics should Agree...
I have purchased several JM3's and love them all.
Happy day of the dead day Ray. Looks like everyone having a great time of SEMA. Just remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and don’t forget to have yourself a great day.
Not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, sometimes nine months later it shows up and is a constant reminder for the rest of your life. 😂
@@onryboy2264 OK that would be an exception 😆😂🤣.
That's awesome! I do like that gen 3, I wouldn't mind getting one😊
I wonder how many non mechanics have had to chop off a filter that some idiot over tightened?
I have. I had a Fram filter once that was so tight that the band style wrench collapsed it. It was a long time ago... We didn't have cap wrenches at home back then. We stuck a screw driver through it, and that nasty cheap filter just ripped off. We ended up getting it off with a big terry towel, a hammer and a chisel. I never bought a Fram filter again.
will get one of these for my Xciting 500 Scooter.
I want one for my water RO filter for my home! I hate taking them off!
It took me a bit to realize what I was looking at. A oil filter ratchet wrench. I need to get me one of these. Way better than a rubber strap and plastic handle that breaks in my hand.
I was the service writer at a WalMart tire and lube. Our lead oil change guy came to me with the base plate of an oil filter. Somebody was unable to get the filter off, so they cut off the can leaving the base and screwed the new filter down to the old base. The nipple stuck thru the base just far enough to allow the filter to screw on.
The filter wrench just keeps getting re invented.
Ray I see that you were in the north hall. Funny I am in the north hall with my company.
I need to brake away and come over to the jm3 booth to get a set of filter wrenches.
That oil gizmo looks like something you'd find in a dollar store
Well says USA😂
I just watched a video were a guy took the def fluid spout and put it on a jug of transmission fluid makes a great funnel
What a neat idea!!! Will that work on my C5 LS1? The filter is recessed into the oil pan.
Ray and Rich together, I love it
If you're really desperate, you can use a regular belt. I had to do that once on an overtightened filter. I loaned my strap wrench out and couldn't get it back immediately (I did get it back though).
Good to see you’re enjoying SEMA. Great tool too.
They should have had an "Engineer Dunking Booth"
Lauren reminds me of my late wife, very sweet and I miss her tremendously 🥲
So sorry, hugs.
Thank you!
I’m going to get a couple of these.
I never expected such excitement over a filter wrench.
Those oil filter tools are great
You might check on Reilley's Rebuilds in Sarasota....might need her some day..
Nice idea but a lot of fuel filters on diesels most don't have the pleats to grab month and are very hard to get to on the equipment we work on
Great tool.👍
Hey Ray, Good day to you and Wife Unit... Hope you 2 have a great time in Vegas !!! Love the Vids Ray keep up the good work, But, Make sure to get out of there for awhile and take the Wife Unit to a few shows and what not... Later Gater ;)
CZcams is making me watch a commercial and it never let me skip...
I heard they were doing that
Ray, as long as the filter has groves on the bottom, works great. My semi filters are smooth. How's that work on those filters.
Did I miss it or was there not a link to the website to buy some of the displayed wrenches? Thanks for sharing.
Looks good for the filters with the flutes. What about smooth sided?
The worst oil filter I ever had to remove was on a 64 Bel- Air 6cyl. Wrenches crushed it. Driving a screwdriver through it simply mangled it more. It ended up as nothing but the filter top plate against the block. I had to heat it with an oxy- acetylene torch and loosen it with a hammer & chisel.
I need one of those for my B18. Everybody who has one knows you damn near have to crawl up in the trans to change it.
Those look great. Do you know if those Gen 3 are more or less universal? I have two different manufacture vehicles and I don’t want to have to use two different wrenches. Maybe this could replace it or is this more for having a more reliable wrench? In other words, instead of the old school wrenches that slip you could replace those with these?
THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO EVER DUDE !!!!!
As this 'shade tree' mechanic ages I look for what makes the automobile matinenance task easier.....
Looks good but how much are they and how many do you need to buy for the different filter sizes? Strap or chain type 1 size fits all.
671! Exactly which one I wanted.
I used to punch a screwdriver though them works well just a little messy 😂
LOL, If Wife unit can do it i can Do it, hehehe, she is precious RAY
back in the day when i drove fords i have used the old screwdriver through the filter trick , LOL
My question is about the tool for larger filters. We all know Ford 7.3 filters are a pain to get off, Isuzu NPR diesel are a pain. Does the larger removal tool have an adapter so a strong arm can be used for removal?
What did you think of Tavarish's Florida hurricane flooded P1 McLaren? He did a helluva job rebuilding it.
You have sold it to me, I have just ordered one AND I DONT EVEN OWN A VEHICLE😆
i use a giant pair of Channellock's!!!
I live in Vegas .
Thing is all filters are not made with the serrations on the end like those shown !!
Interesting idea, however I still prefer using the cups. and the traditional band wrench. This would be good if you don't have cups, or the filter brand doesn't fit your cup and you don't have any band wrenches.
If I remember correctly, one should always rub oil on the rubber gasket and not over tighten. This video appears to go against all of that. A basic tenant of vehicle maintenance.
Hi Ray, great video!, but you have to treat these expos like going to Disney world, set a time and place to meet everyone, and if the other guys are suppose to meet for a demo, text, and email everyone's cell phone !!, they'll come running!!, lol 😆, by the way, that auto ratcheting oil filter needs to be made to angle the handles so That you can get them on a chevy Silverado pickup truck!!, including yours at the shop !!
I have a suburban with the 5.3 and was thinking the same thing, there is also not a lot of room on the sides of the filter between the filter and pan. Not sure if any of those styles would work well !
Hi Ray, how much do the jen3 oil filter removers cost . And how much are the commercial ones cost? Thanks.
Never met a filter that a screwdriver through the side didn't take off.
Yup. No reason for anything else when a filter is stuck.
I think you and the wife should have been the attraction of the show , and that ratchet oil filter is great, thanks for the video
Been lucky as every vehicle I've owned over 50 yeats the oil filter has been very accessible.
I will use my strap wrench for un tight.. (fits all sizes). And some lubricant and hand strength to tighten 😊
The oil wrench .. Where to get it? Can you drop a link in here where we can order those oil wrenches? Thanks
Will the JM3 Gen III work on the oil filter for a GM 5.3L? It’s an ‘07 classic in case they vary over the generations.
"Michael found a way to defeat the lube techs" Walmart lube techs are now crying plotting ways again.
So did Erik bring you a Subaru engine to replace the lost one?
