  • When ATS Diesel needed data acquisition to evaluate their new Stage 3 turbo for 2019+ RAM trucks, they called Banks. The ATS team was so impressed with the iDash DataMonster its suite of pressure and temp sensors that they replaced all of their existing gauges with iDashes... Not just in their development trucks but in the dyno cell too!

This was a very informative video on many levels.
From the technical perspective, the drive ability perspective and so on.
My wife and I just purchased a 2016 Ram Laramie 3500 Diesel Dually. I know nothing about this vehicle other then it can tow my toy hauler and Harleys inside and to not allow the fuel tank to get to E.
Anyways you brought up some great points about towing. From driving through the plains up through the foothills of this mountain range and the things to be mindful of to not pushing the vehicle to hard to what to keep an eye on.
I noticed I have lost of temp gauges in between the RPM & Speedo that I can read and keep an eye on.
I will be traveling from So California to Central Utah in about a month towing the toy hauler along the way.
You’ve definitely planted some things in my head to be mindful of.
    Thanks.

I know I've heard tales of the 94.5 and up OBS Powerstrokes having both the Ford OBD connector and the OBD2 one from the factory but had to have the PCM flashed so it could use the OBD2 port which also left the OBD1 port useless afterwords. All that said would an iDash work on my 95 since it does use the J1850PWM protocol?

    • @bankspower

The iDash 1.8 (iDash DataMonster and iDash Super Gauge) read CAN data. Your 96 is pre-CAN. Yes, you have OBD, but not CAN. CAN was mandated in 2008. Our current iDash offerings are CAN data only. However, we do hope to release a pre-CAN (J1850PWM) at some point in the near future.

Like all of the others on the Road who build their Tow Rig backwards . Buy a truck, then almost immediately install a lift and large tires, then they have to start keeping up with The Joneses. Next comes the "Toys" and the trailer to haul them, then 6 months later they find themselves at the RV Super show buying a place for The wife unit to sleep and possibly stay dry, which might last a year if they're lucky because 98% of RV'$ built in today's world start coming apart the moment they hit the road. Then, if the initial unit wasn't a Toy Hauler, then it's time to Reup to an even more shittily built Toy toter where they find again they are constantly at the RV Repair shop trying to get that warranty work done only to find out that it's going to take 2 months to make that happen, because all of the cash paying suckers get 3 to 5 techs because they charge $120/Hr so warranty might get 3 techs, maybe. So before long, they're discovering that it cost 1K to have a weekend out with the toys, and the truck still needs more upgrades. But they also find that in the last 2 years, new trucks have all of the upgrades performed, so its more decisions. And they may have to go another 60k in debt. And with both looking for better paying jobs so as to keep up that ever more expensive weekend play time, and keep The Repo man away. Enjoyment has gotten out of hand in today's world.

I'm going to put my ass on the line (because I'm still under warranty and currently waiting for warranty work) and tell everyone that can see this to go to Revmax or some other builder. I'm on my 4th or 5th (I think, can't remember because its been so much) transmission in 2 years from ATS and now has to be replaced again. They had blamed it on my tuning from HPP (now CTT) saying that 220psi line pressure was too much on their stage 3 68rfe, so they had me purchase their co pilot. They blamed it on my factory transmission cooling capacity 2014 ram 3500 dually so they told me to purchase a external cooler/fan. I bought a derale 35,000btu fan/cooler combo. 2 transmissions were bad straight from them when they shipped to their "authorized installer". Each time I have had to wait for over a month before they even ship a transmission even though they have them in stock and sell them to new customers without a delay. The first failure the torque convertor failed and took the transmission with it, second failure i got the transmission and the OD and UD clutches failed within a couple days and would slip with anything over 30% throttle and the transmission ran 214°F plus from the day of install. 3 transmission failed on the test drive after install, its replacement had a bad valve body found on the test drive after install and now after a year of babying a transmission that I told them was bad after install because the torque convertor clutch would slip under 60% throttle in OD and UD (they told me it was just the new GPZ clutch packs needing to break in) I have a failed transmission again. It takes 30 days to get a replacement leaving me without a vehicle that I need to tow my RV around.

The ATS transmissions SUCK! They probably had to rebuild it once it made it back to the shop. Towed back is more like it! I had to remove my transmission twice, and paid for the shipping from Texas, so that they could rebuild it. The reason they offer a 5 year 500,0000 warranty is because most people won't pay to remove and ship it back to them. By far the biggest mistake I have made. My transmission is still under warranty and needs to be looked at for the third time since they first rebuilt it. I am not even going to bother sending the transmission back to have them look at it. I rather just pay someone locally to rebuild it once it goes completely out. Also, if you live in Denver and still plan to have them rebuild and replace anything on your truck, you better think again. I had them remove and replace my transmission once when I was there. The next time I had to remove it I noticed that they didn't properly torque the bolts ( some being finger tight). They also cracked the rear engine cover where the starter is located. This was because they placed one of the longer bolts in the wrong spot. In the end, this transmission and anything else will cost you more than the initial purchase price.

What your actual “limitation” is and what you should find out when you first get a truck is what your specific truck is rated to tow or haul by the manufacturer.
