Ford's Baby Truck Goes Rugged! | 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Review

  • While most of us wait for an AWD hybrid version of the Maverick, Ford is now shipping the most rugged version of their popular small truck: the Maverick Tremor. In addition to skid plates and all-terrain (and all-weather rated) tires, the Tremor borrows the capable AWD system from the Bronco Sport Badlands. Originally designed for on-road duty in vehicles like the Focus RS, the twin-clutch rear axle effectively becomes a locking or limited slip differential whenever the truck wants. Coupled with a more aggressive center coupling lockup and the Maverick is nearly as capable as a truck twice the price. Looking to go further off the beaten path in an easy-to-park truck? Check out the Maverick, but good luck actually finding one on the lot...

    I like the base Maverick. The off-road versions wouldn’t be anywhere on my radar since I have no need for off-road use. I like that they gave it their torque-vectoring rear diff. I was prepared to call the Tremor nothing more than a tire and appearance package, but the rear diff makes it worthwhile for off-road use.
    For me, the base Maverick Hybrid would be the best. It’s very practical, very efficient and very inexpensive compared to other trucks.

    I can only speculate, but I suspect one of the reasons we don't see an AWD Hybrid in Maverick is because the AWD system comes with a heavier (and more costly) IRS system instead of the Hybrid's lightweight twist beam setup. Add the AWD hardware and hybrid battery and you might eliminate much of the FE benefits since it will be heavier overall than the 2.0L EB.

      The Escape is available as a hybrid and it massively outperforms the standard ice configuration. I’d suspect supply chain is what is keeping the hybrid awd model from being released. Hopefully they’ll have an awd hybrid maverick available eventually. It seems like Ford is having more trouble than others with their supply chain.

      @GavinSwick Před rokem +6

      @@jeedwards1981 when it comes to marketing, the Maverick really sells itself. The demand has been there for years and only now is getting partially served by the Maverick and Santa Cruz. Any hybrid iteration will immediately sell itself regardless of where people think it should be slotted. Im sure the bean counters know something we dont. I wish they would to , dont get me wrong, i just dont think they will until at least the hybrid models can be built in higher numbers. I waited 2 weeks short of a year for my Maverick Lariat hybrid. It can deliver over 40 mpg in the summer, and low 30’s highway if you’re not doing 80+. A nice little truck, especially with copilot 360 with lane centering. Ford will be adding a 3rd shift at the plant that builds this plus the Bronco Sport, so this should permit a bunch more of the Ecoboost engine models to be built. For some reason they don’t build as many hybrid models which sees a higher demand than they expected. If you like this size of truck, I think it’s worth the wait, once the order books open up again this summer.

    Yes, it somewhat looks small, and in some ways it is, yet it's not tiny. I look at it from across a parking lot parked next to a lot of other Fords, and it looks small. I stand next to it, it looks small. Then I look at it next to my wife's Cherokee, it's longer, about the same width, and just a touch shorter. It really doesn't occupy a lot let space than my Ram 1500 did, but just a little less.
    I had someone park next to me in a first generation Colorado, and it's pretty much on par. This means similar to the original Ranger too. Though roomier inside than the current Ranger.
    As for fuel economy on an AWD XLT, I am experiencing just under 24 mpg commuting to and from work with a fair amount of stop and go traffic. On the highway I've gotten as high as 34 mpg in summer heat through some rather hilly terrain and speeds above the state limit of 65 mpg. There's no lack for power either, as it smoothly delivers impressive performance, too.
    It's fun to drive, though there are some minor things I'd improve. Overall, for the price, it's a bargain for a truck -- or as I call it a "trucklet."

    I live in Raleigh, NC and I’ve seen several of them driving around. I believe there’s at least two people in my neighborhood that have one. Ford is opening a 3rd shift for Maverick production, this coming summer. I really think we'll see some different versions of this in the coming years. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a fully enclosed SUV, at some point. People are buying cars but the vast majority of vehicle sales are used. Obviously, because of the prices. It's only getting more difficult. There is absolutely a market for a capable Maverick priced SUV. Possibly larger than the pickup? As a result of used cars selling nearly 3 times as many as new, availability is decreasing and adding to the used prices. Ford is in a perfect spot to take a chunk of that enormous share.

    Very informative, detailed and knowledgeable review. Your camera work and editing skills are top notch as well along with the presentation of the information. Keep up the great work. I simply don't understand why Ford keeps announcing new products and can't deliver on them in volumes. Same thing happened with the Bronco when that was announced. Took more than a year or so for some people to get their vehicles and then when they did, they had issues with the hard tops. Ford's quality control is awful as well. Maybe they should focus on producing a more limited lineup with higher quality. After all, wasn't their old saying, Quality is Job #1? At least this truck is affordable. The F-150 Tremor can get over 70k if you get it totally tricked out.

    The reason RWD vehicles usually turn tighter than similarly sized FWD and AWD vehicles is because the front CV axles are limited in how much they can articulate, so most steering setups for FWD vehicles are designed to not exceed those limits. You also see this when people lift their FWD and AWD cars where their CV axles die much quicker than with the stock ride height.
    RWD Vehicles don't have CV axles up front so with proper suspension design you can get obscene steering angles like on the Triumph Spitfire.
