I’m an American, and no one in the US knew, or knows, who Jimmy Savile is. When I was 13 in 1980 my father, who was a cardiac surgeon, took a job at a hospital in London for 2 years and he and I moved there. One day there was a fundraising lunch and party at the hospital to benefit the children’s wing, and my father and I went. Jimmy Savil was going to be there, and I had of course seen him on tv and thought he was bizarre (then again, I wasn’t bothered by him, because a lot of British celebrities were outrageous). I’d never heard my friends talk about him, so I didn’t know about the nasty rumors. I will absolutely NEVER forget meeting him. He was very loud and seemed to be having a great time, and he shook my hand and looked down at me (no sunglasses) and smiled and said as I shook his hand “My, my....you’ve got quite a grip, mate!”. My entire body went cold and I wanted to run out of there. What I remember most was his eyes staring into mine, there was nothing remotely warm or human about him. My father didn’t like him at all, he didn’t sense that he was a dangerous predator the way I did, he just thought he was a nut and totally fake.

When Savile died he received what amounted to a state funeral in Leeds, with thousands lining the streets and plenty dressed in gold tracksuits and smoking big cigars and everybody was celebrating his life. He certainly didn't commit any crimes since then so it is clear that not "everybody knew" as we here so many say now. Savile is clearly the wrong doer and I am not losing site of that but I believe that he very probably targeted vulnerable children as he knew that they would be afraid to say anything or wouldn't be believed and I am not sure that "everybody knew".

Although he never mentioned any particular reason or behaviour, I remember him telling me that in his opinion, Savile was a nasty piece of work, and that his charity work was just a screen. I remember being so surprised as I only saw him as a TV presenter and fundraiser. Of course now I realize what my friend may have meant. Shockingly, since all these dreadful crimes have come to light, 3 people close to me have all revealed that they had been abused, in varying degrees by Savile. This is an horrific case but so endemic. I went to an elite, all girl's school in & in my time there alone, there were 3 male teachers, in sexual relationships with 14 ,15 & 16 year old girls...and those were only ones who spoke up. They were handsome, charming men...often quite fit, who took a "special interest" in these girls. I knew that at least 6 girls reported this to parents or friends over time. One teacher was finally charged, in relation to 4 girls and another one was reported to the police but charges were never laid. Sadly, one was never reported at all. Some of these were my friends, girls I knew & walked past every day.... in hindsight, the relationships seemed inappropriately close but many of us just saw those girls as "lucky" and "a bit special to these teachers"...horrendous in hindsight and I feel so guilty for thinking this. 3 girls suicided as a result of the abuse and 2 had breakdowns....yet 2 of these men are still walking free. I can't imagine that these were the only girls....and I just can't see this getting any better sadly. I find it utterly depressing.

im totally loving your channel Emma ;) i have been fortunate enough to have watched most of your shows, on TV and now CZcams. Thank you for helping me understand about these people. For the longest time, i have wondered what makes people kill, (nature/nurture) that my quest for knowledge has spanned over many years and many more books. my childhood was excessively abusive (physically, emotionally, and sexually), frightening (my father was schizophrenic), constantly moving, being the only black child in the many schools i attended, (so very bullied), isolated, unsettled, and chaotic, but i couldn't quite grasp why i didn't have the urge to act on my anger and hurt anyone. YOU have helped me in such a big way, and i can't thank you enough :)

I'm born and raised in Aylesbury. I lived directly opposite Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and my mum worked there. I can't tell you the amount of times I saw this monster. He was either going for a run, first thing in the morning, around the outside perimeter of the hospital, and along Mandeville road, whilst we were walking to school, or in the spinal injury unit. He always stopped to talk to my mum, but only when she had my brother and I with her. Obviously he knew who she was and that she worked at the hospital, but he only went out of his way to talk to her when she had us.
Let me tell you, u was not a shy child. I would talk to anyone. I mean I was so loud and outgoing, but I do remember when he came up to us (my brother was really shy), both my brother and I would grab my mum's hands and hide behind her back. This was back in the mid 80's. There was something about him, I didn't trust, and I trusted everyone.

As a huge fan, I asked my aunt and mum’s cousin if they would take my cousin’s and I to Holiday On Ice. This was because Charlie Cairoli was doing the halftime show. As soon as the first half was over, I started bouncing in my seat with excitement and asking when Charlie Cairoli was coming on. I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and he was sitting behind us. I was thrilled beyond belief. He was very kind and charming. He kissed mine and my older cousins hands and bowed to my younger cousin. It didn’t just make my day, it made my year. I always cherished the memory of him choosing to make 3 children incredibly happy.
Years later, when Jimmy Savile’s appalling crimes came to light, I felt like I’d been doused in freezing cold water with ice cubes. Then I felt immense relief and thanked my lucky stars that Charlie fixed it for me so I didn’t have to meet Jim.

I read a book called ‘Today I’m Alice’ and one part of the book describes her fathers friend abusing her. The description of the abuse made me think of Jimmy Saville as there were many similarities. Very good book!
Thank you Emma for the video! ❤️
