  • Luis Garavito was known as the 'Beast' or ' Tribilín' (named after the Disney character "Goofy"). Garavito is thought to have raped, butchered and killed over 400 children. Let Emma Kenny take you on a deep dive into when and where this serial killer was allowed to roam and commit some of the worst killings by one man that we have ever known about. He only comes second to Harold Shipman.

Of all the cases you’ve covered, this one hurt the most. A little boy on my street a few doors down came and sat with me and helped me pull the weeds out my front garden over the weekend. He’s about 4 years old, he’s so funny, so chatty. And so trusting. He even offered me some of his marshmallows. The thought that this man took little children like him and did what he did, and the authorities didn’t care. It’s moved me to tears.

And you keep an eye on him. And that is so wonderful that he helps you with the yard. And he wanted to share his marshmallows with you. So far he seems like he's not damaged. • @caroline4540

That's crazy! Guess I'm so used to hearing about executions, being from the US. Especially in the 80's & 90's. During that time, it seemed like a few times a month men in my state were put on their 24hr Death Watch. These days, the appeals system takes longer and less states use it. Plus, more & more US citizens are against it.
Charlie Manson was supposed to get death but I think California outlawed the death penalty a few years before being reinstated. Believe once a prisoner is given clemency the state is not allowed to change their mind.
When I was 14, my mom was sequestered for a month to serve on double rape/homicide capital case. I'd sit for hours each day beside the phone so I wouldn't miss her designated call home. Of course, she could not discuss the case. My father, also, had to go out of town to Puerto Rico & left me home alone w/ lots of cash for ordering food & school lunches. It was amusing because when she called, mom couldn't discuss the case & was instructed by my father to not tell her where he was at. Guess he didn't want her freaking out while on the jury knowing she'd most likely be unable to leave.
The precious minutes on the phone w/mom was spent listening to her talk about a new game of solitaire she learned that day. I read & watched news daily about the case hoping to spot as to how she was doing with regards to the jury. It was difficult being
cut off from her for so long.
When mom finally got home, she sat w/me for hours to talk about the case, why they ruled to execute the man & how making such a decision made her feel. She hated to do it but needed to follow the law. Even tho the crime was absolutely horrific, she hoped the choice of execution was quick. My mom hated seeing anything suffer & prayed for lethal injection b/c gas took too long and seemed like a horrible way to die.
Her explanation & experience is why I still believe in the death penalty. However, as a politically liberal person, Im not proud of my belief & glad to live in a state w/no death penalty. I know our system is broken & want to make sure people are completely guilty of egregious acts before it's considered. 'The Beast' definitely falls in that category.

@@sonjialancaster8813 I entirely agree, I spent my entire life working in child protection, so sadly saw the worst side of life on so many occasions. People do need to be more aware & if their instinct is, that there’s something wrong to report it, however, many people fail to do this, because ‘it’s none of my business’ or ‘I’m sure that it’s already been reported’ etc. It’s far better for the authorities to investigate & find nothing wrong, than for them to not be aware until it’s too late. Also, when an incident does occur & a child dies, the first comment is usually ‘why didn’t the authorities do something about it!’ Whilst failing to realise that they too have a part to play! When interviewed they’ll say ‘we saw / knew x y or z’ but when asked if they’d reported it, the answer was often ‘no’. Whilst issues can be identified from our public health role, it’s still essential that the public pay their part too.

Hello! I’m from Colombia and just wanted to clear some things up. In Colombia, life sentences and the death sentence have always been a huge debate because well, they’ve been considered unconstitutional throughout history. The maximum sentence anyone can receive is 65 years. When Garavito was convicted the conversation about allowing a life sentence or a death sentence hadn’t even started! It’s crazy to think about this but there is a huge movement going on right now about constitutionalizing life sentences and death sentences for rapists and murderers. Thanks for the great video!

I say the exact same thing as you...I know with 100% certainty that I WOULD NOT survive the death of my child, especially if he was murdered. They'd literally have to put me in the grave with him. I can't wrap my head around that, just the thought brings me to tears. I have so much respect & admiration for parents that not only go on once their child is gone, but make sure that their child's death wasn't in vain & change laws or start charities in their honor.
And no, if he was in the US he'd get the death penalty. Even if he wasn't in a death penalty state, he'd be murdered by someone else in prison.

Hello Emma, I'm a Spanish fan watching from London. As someone who has been weirdly fascinated by this case for over 6 years, I can say that this video was absolutely brilliant. A few years ago, a Spanish journalist managed to get an interview with Garavito, he visited his cell in Colombia and the documentary that came from that interview, showed a cold-blooded psychopath who did not care about his crimes. He didn't even call them murders, unless the interviewer used that word, he refered to his crimes as "morally unnacceptable conducts/acts". I can't belive he'll be up for parole in just two more years.

    • @lorenazurita2480
      @lorenazurita2480 Před rokem

Luis Garavito is the kind of man who, weirdly enough, you wouldn't feel threatened by; he had long-term relationships with women who already had children and he never hurt those children.
He was very intelligent when choosing his victims, alway poor, and also, he operated in a time period where the police forces where overwhelmed between chasing "guerrilas" and trying to end Pablo Escobar's reign of terror.
He knew what, when, and how. He was organised, cunning, and sadly, very efficient in killing. And he does not regret it.

The story of the hart children resonates deeply with me. Being puppets, told how to think, feel & riddled with fear but smiling( well hidden.) To scared to say what the adults are doing is wrong. Being with strange humans you sense din't want you around your just good for the money an object to serve their purpose. Being mixed race & born in the 70's & in care don't get me started. Hense why i'm finally studying counselling! I am a self healer but had no confidence in education( when your told you are stupid all your childhood by the people choosen to foster u your in deep trouble. I just remember bracing myself as a child for what was to come. I think the only abuse i didn't suffer was sexual. I'm here & i'm strong! Self taught & happy to help others xxx ❤

Emma - your point about the amount of people who disappear without trace & how it just doesn't seem to be taken seriously is so, so massively important.
I strongly believe that in some of these cases people in authority/ positions of power are involved & that's why so little effort is taken to resolve the situation.
If you're responsible for a crime (or a series of crimes) & in a position of authority or power, you're not going to allow some sort of coordinated task force to be formed that will investigate what you've done. End of story.
I know a lot of people will think that's a far fetched theory, but we know these high level establishment abusers exist now. The likes of Savile, Cyril Smith & Edward Heath prove it. It's happened in the past, so you can bet it's still happening now. Given the level of abuse involved in some of these cases it's also not much of a stretch to believe that some of these establishment creeps are killers as well as sex criminals.
We need to confront this on a societal level. We need to make it stop, expose the people responsible & put them in jail for the rest of their lives.

Trauma has a lot of effects on the brain.
You really helped me when you said the GABA is the Nero- transmitter that prevent you from doing yourself harm. I suffered with Benzodiazepines, ( which interferes with the amount of GABA) I thought about killing myself everyday( for 5 years) not normal thoughts, and so many irrational fears, not myself at all. So brain chemistry could be involved in abnormal brains.
SRA does happen, very hidden, but it’s there and covered up at higher levels. This is inhuman.
