    When I was 17 and working at Virgin Megastores I had a *massive* crush on a 23 year old guy I worked with. Upon telling him, he said I was attractive, but at 17 I was too young and he didn't think that dating me would have been appropriate (bearing in mind I'm UK based so we were two people of legal age). I was devastated but when I turned 23 the idea of dating a 17 year old was not something I entertained - and I realise now that I'm in my 30s how much of a decent guy he was. 23 being in a 'relationship' with a 12 year old... So many levels of wrong.

      @wvrjl Před 3 lety +9

      @@6AlphaMikeCharlie9 - Hey, yeah. Let's do like the USA, and put 11 or 12 year olds in adult prisons, so that if they ever get paroled, after being raped & abused multiple times a day, they have ZERO chance of being rehabilitated. In fact, they'll be 100% sociopaths. Now, I don't agree with all their decisions here (trust me on that one), but I DO know that:
      1) The crown/prosecutor's story is often just that - a story; not the truth.
      2) There are MANY followers that have killed that would have NEVER killed without the leader. Especially someone twice their age. Those kids have real capability of being rehabilitated (I know that your culture is more about revenge).
      3) I was APPALLED when I found out that young children can be put in an adult jail with adult inmates. It's terrifying for adults! Putting CHILDREN IN THERE TO GET CONSTANTLY RAPED?! I don't CARE what they've done. The state should do better. Your country doesn't seem interested in rehabilitation, and since privatized jail is now a business in the US, that judges often invest in, WAY more people are going to jail then should be. And since you often don't even supply education, how are these people supposed to change their lives around?

I remember my english teacher at the time taught me the idiom "Justice in Canada is nothing but a slap on the hand" precisely quoting this case lmao. But like FUCKING NO ONE agreed on this bullshit law that prevented her to get away yet MP keep passing these idiot laws people freaking abhor. I thought it was endearing people had nothing else to talk about but this case at the moment (it went on and on for days or weeks, pretty much until I left in August) I thought it was endearing this was the most newsworthy thing happening while back home the whole war on drugs shit was spiraling out of control and every time I turned on the TV I would hear about horrible shit like people being thrown sliced into pieces in public plazas, mass graves, public shootouts and shit of that kind.
      But yeah man, fix that shit. Politicians have their head up their arses when they come with this bullcrap, obviously they aim more for reintegration rather than punitive punishment but there should be exceptions for incredibly vile and reprehensible acts such as these, smh.

    Wow, Emma, what a case. I know she was a child still at 12, but she was old enough to know murder is wrong. I find it v worrying that she's just getting on with her life after that, with no record and no monitoring. Expertly presented case with great analysis. (PS I've got a fabulous The Mission t-shirt that you'd love, I'm sure! I think we must be the same age as I remember them from secondary school time too!)

    Is this also the best part of anyone’s Sunday evening or am I incredibly sad that it’s mine? 🙈
    Can’t help but love Emma though, the facts but also the brutal honesty rather than just being impartial and trying to stay in neutral.
    It’s nice to hear facts on the case but actually have real emotions attached to it.
    I’ve always loved Emma on TV programs but Emma on CZcams...totally different ball game and she’s winning by a mile!

    Absolutely love your take on these cases. Love the fact you're educated and experienced in this field but always you have a no BS attitude to the horrific deeds these people commit. I think it's so very important to understand the background and childhood events that shape their lives when they have these extreme traumatic abusive childhoods like the Gypsy Rose case. I don't think she should have received the sentence she did due to the absolute emotional abuse and lack of control over her body and identity that led to her actions. I would love to see you cover that one. However when it's situations like this it blows my mind.

  • @Dances.In.Storms
    @Dances.In.Storms Před 2 lety +2

    I think that when it comes to killers or even serious offenders being released there are only really 2 questions that need to be answered to reach a conclusion. 1- would you want them living next door to yourself or a loved one, and 2- is their life as "deemed rehabilitated" worth more than the lives of the innocent public should they then go on to re-offend? I think in every single circumstance the answer would be a resounding no. If these people are concluded to be rehabilitated and recovered (and punished) enough that prison is no longer a suitable environment then maybe some sort of communal living situation should be explored whereby a "normal" living environment exists but is still 100% segregated from the rest of society. I dont think that people who commit heinous acts should ever be given the opportunity to reoffend in the general population.
