Recently, I ran into a situation where I witnessed a child being hit in a park by his mother in a way that deeply concerned me. I turned to my boyfriend and told him that I didn't feel right about that. He told me that he didn't like it either, but there was nothing we could do.
I remembered what you said about risking to offend, despite me having horrible anxiety about bothering people and causing trouble for them. I told him there was absolutely something that we could do. My boyfriend and I called the police and tailed this mother and child to provide updates on their location while we were on the phone. The police arrived to speak to the mother while she was at a bus stop waiting for the bus, and her immediate reaction to seeing them was to get up, grab her kid, and try to run.
I do not know what happened in the end, but that reaction alone told me that I did the right thing that day. The lessons you provide us are powerful. Thank you for your content, Emma.

This is one HORRIFIC case. I'm so terribly sorry for the babies that lost their lives to this maniac and I am so glad that the little boy from the theater saved himself. Why his earlier crimes were so dismissed is beyond belief.

It is such a gross insult to see that wikipedia states he only had 3 victims (between sept-nov 1989). He had so many other survivors of his abhorrent actions basically get no justice for what he did to them.

Agreed- I often think about how skilfully Emma manages to structure the narrative so that we can gain a deeper understanding of the predator/ crime, as opposed to the linear narrative which most presenters use which doesn’t always allow for such a thorough deep dive!
Emma's knowledge and ability to communicate and/or teach psychology as it applies to offenders,their families and victims and their families is always interesting and spot on. I have yet to truly disagree with any of her thoughts and opinions, and only rarely would like to add a bit or offer a parallel opinion.

I am not always in agreement with Emma on some of her more “extreme” views, and that’s okay I think. I don’t think it would be a great day if everyone was identical, in thought, manner and behaviour or looks.
I do like her use of humour like the sarcasm and alike, it puts the sheer ridiculousness of some of the events, into a context that is comprehensible, yet compassionate toward the subject matter at hand?
I think she captures the frustration of the events as they unfold, makes a mockery of them and does it in as tasteful a manner as is possible.
Reminding everyone that we can all do better? We do not have to be a species with amnesia. Endlessly repeating the short comings of those before us.
But some of the things that have been put out there haha. I don’t know how I would judge if I were asked personally and I don’t know if I could in most cases... like what to do with society’s failures... not always of the same opinion.
I have not seen or experienced her experiences though.
Maybe I would be less on the merciful side in some cases if I had seen or maybe more merciful?

I once read a crime article, where upon interviewing a victim (lucky enough to be saved) she said never ever let them take you in a car, fight to the death there and then, dont let them take you. I totally believe that, sometimes there are worse things than death.
My dad used to tell me and my sisters never let them take you to a second location that’s where you die . There is a reason they need the second location they can’t do what they’re planning where they grab you so make it impossible to move you .

That’s like the little girl who almost got abducted from a department store (maybe a Walmart). As soon as the man snatched her she started kicking, punching & screaming. She literally became too much for that man to handle so he ended up dropping her & taking off. Plus w her screaming like she was it didn’t take long for her mom & other customers/employees to realize what was going on.
The local news in her area interviewed her about the experience & asked her what made the man let her go - She replied that her parents taught her if anyone ever tries to grab/take you, then you need to make as much noise as you can scream you aren’t my parent and help, you kick, punch slap scratch bite etc anything you can to make it as difficult for the person to hold onto you.
And when the news called her a hero and what she did was brave - her response was something like “it was scary but every kid should learn what to do in case it happens to them. Never thought it could happen to me and it did” those aren’t her exact words but that was the over all idea
I read "When the monster comes out of the closet" just recently, it was Westley's own words. Chilling, scary, horrifying, sad and something you can't wrap your mind around. I never got the feeling he was ever sorry except he knew there was something wrong with himself. But he just got worse and worse. There was quite a few kids he molested time and time again and I often wonder what they remember? Have they ever spoken out? I can't find anything but if they ever read his horrifying words and read the words and awful things done to them. How did they feel? I mean one can only imagine but still how terrifying for them. My thoughts go out to those kids, now adults. Let me warn you that book with keep you up and night and it's just hard to get through it knowing it's true and the sick way he described a three year old as sexy. Ugh ... I'm just glad he's long gone. So much more I have to say but it would not be readable and it would be a book in itself.
Almost certain that his surviving victims are fighting PTSD every moment of their lives. I devoutly hope they are being treated or have been treated with EMDR.
@@bobtaylor170 What's EDMR I went through abuse from age 7 to 12 its a constant struggle. I did well till after college and my marriage fell apart my career was ruined after 5 years. It took years for it to hit me not till after trying to have my own kids did I realise how vulnerable I was. Tbh o equate that abuse with murder as they ruin the adult the child would've been. Its not an easy existence and the sentences they get make me feel like nobody gets what this does to person. I get therapy and I've good days and bad but I've definitely not achieved what I could've if that hadn't happened.

Because of you Emma, I’m so much aware of my surroundings. Even more so when it come to children.
I was walking down a crowded street last week and a man was carry a 3yr old child she looked distressed and was shouting for her mother. Not one person batted an eye, they just let him carry on with this child in clear distress.
My gut instinct was there something wrong here. I turned round and followed them. I heard him say to her, “I’m taking you to your mother”. So I kept following them, her mother was not around she was no where to be seen. He then took pictures of her which I found weird. She didn’t call his name she didn’t seem to act like she new this man.
My instinct was don’t leave that child so I kept following them and phoned the police.
The police arrived fortunately shortly after the call all the time I’m in close proximity watching him with her. The police came and spoke to him.
And you know what they arrested him and called her parents.
I wouldn’t like too have to think what that creep had in mind for her.

Stevie, you're the reason that child is still alive. There's no doubt about that.
Thing is, from what I've learned, when the sickos are desperate enough to be attempting to abduct a child in broad daylight, with hundreds of people around, i believe that points to them being already very prolific. Because he's potentiality already harmed children within his family or circle and possibly has already been caught.
He is experiencing extreme cravings, just like an addict craving their drugs.
The cravings are not able to be pushed to the side any longer and he would be literally unable to think about anything else.
This would've been very uncomfortable mentally and would have usurped all other logical thoughts about needing to make a plan in order to maximise the chance of getting a victim without getting caught.
And so for that reason, he simply couldn't stop himself from doing what he did and committing an extremely risky and disorganised crime. The compulsion caused unfathomable desperation.
Luckily that desperation meant the child you saved was being taken in such a way that rescue was even possible.
That's my opinion on him. Did you find out anything about what happened to him afterwards? Or who he was or what his past crimes were?
It's either that, or he's suffering from some severe mental health issues similar to the scumbag who abducted Polly Klaas.
I'm so so glad that little child experienced something that he likely will be able to recover from very quickly and won't suffer any lasting trauma thanks to you stevie, you absolutely wonderful woman! You are a very rare breed, sadly. You shouldn't be being congratulated, it should be just what everyone would've done but it's sadly just not the case. Most people are not interested in helping others and it's definitely getting worse. Many are cold and heartless and this society is literally perfect for producing such people, narcissism and such traits are definitely on the increase.

These vile monsters should all be rounded up and caged forever. I am sorry, but I am all for human rights blah blah blah but when it comes to kiddies, NO, that is a step way too far. The mom who didn’t press charges for fear of trauma to her molested children taught her children the wrong lesson. Running away from evil, like running from dogs, only makes it worse. Always face it.
My sister has lived in Vancouver WA. since 1964. During the time I'd been in that park, cuz it was a few blocks away from my sister's house. I freaked out, when we heard about this horrific crime. We kept our children closer than ever. We lived in La Center. About 25 kilometers north. Thank you for covering this case. It's to close to home. ❤✌
I remember the park incident. My Ma was terrified because I and my brother were the same age, in Central Washington. I’m a 41 yea old father now and still think of them often.
I remember watching an interview with the officer who worked this case.
That interview has stayed with me because of how utterly broken that poor police officer was, how haunted he was, after working this case.
I was talking to a friends pre-teen girls about sex attacks I experienced as a young girl and I said to fight. My friend told her daughters to comply. I couldn’t believe she thought they would rape and not kill.
Im always torn with this idea because some men rape and dont kill I worry that if I tell my daughter to fight it could lead to murder
You need to react based off the circumstances you’re in saying to do one or the other isn’t really realistic, neither one or the other will end in the same result .
I read his diary & quite honestly I wish I could scrub it all from my brain... It has haunted me since. The most frustrating thing about this case is how many times his sick & troubling criminal actions got him into trouble. But, not ever enough trouble to deter him from continuing. It was abundantly clear that he was a predator & his crimes were escalating in severity. Those boys didn't have to die. He should've been institutionalized safely away from anybody he could victimize very early on.

Another splendid, deep dive 👏 It is extremely perplexing so many judges make poor decisions. Just like Jeffery Dahmer, a judge “didn’t want to ruin” his life by sentencing him as he should have been. Gave him 1 year with work release. Think of all the lives that could have been spared if he’d only been sentenced appropriately. Despicable!!

These cases would make you never want to take your eyes off your kids even for a second. Terrifying that these predators lurk out there. There isn’t a (legal) punishment good enough for these monsters.

My husband is the "step dad" to our boys but the bio dad has been gone since,...forever, and that is the only dad they will ever want and need. If my husband had heard such a thing about our boys or our little girl we recently had together, he would have done the same thing but he probably would have killed him honestly. That's what a REAL parent is supposed to do. Protect that child AT ALL COSTS. Good on this step dad who hunted this p.o.s. down like the dog he was.

I've just been watching obsessions : dark desires and came across the forgotten serial killer Stephen Peter Morin/Moran The Chameleon . Now; that has a Kenny deep dive written all over it! He was expected of murdering 47 women and 4 men from 1969 untill 1981, although he was only charged with 3 or 4 . He had a terrible relationship with his Mother, and they believe murdered the women who reminded him of her. He would change identities from men's death certificates and had many disguises.He was executed in 1985. I've never heard of him and doubt many others have as there is'nt much on here regarding documentries. It would be great if you would do an episode on him please! x

I am at a loss with this case, the failings of law enforcement is astonishing & we hear it time & time again. I have a 7yr old child and I always want to teach how to be careful, not comply etc but it is such a fine line as I don't want them to be scared of the world as it can be amazing. Has always been a scary time to be a parent but as we hear about these more it makes it that much scarier 😥as always you told a rather horrendous case very well and did the victims proud x
@23:00 if soliciting children to play strip poker isn't a crime, I think every body who was ever arrested, punished and shamed for trying to buy/sell sexual activity deserves a massive apology
In the UK there are 5 categories re sexual offences against children, from grooming ( which that would be) & semi naked or naked pictures right through to intercourse. I find it odd that strip poker wouldn't come under grooming.

Question: do people think that the “Polly Klaus” law would have meant that he was incarcerated before he could start killing, or would he have still wiggled his way out of any form of harsh sentencing? I’m not sure which way I lean with this, there is the issue that the US justice system seems to sometimes (or perhaps often) drop the ball as far as allowing psychopathic predators freedom, only to have them go out an perpetrate more (and often worse) crimes!

I think it would be absolutely priceless and could potentially save so many of our babies harm. I would 100% attend or insist that my children are educated.

This comment is a great idea … this would be so valuable … I would definitely make my kids watch it or go to the live talk. Emma would be able to talk to kids and reach them in an age appropriate way because of her profession but in a way of letting them know how they can keep themselves safe. It could be also be rolled out in schools .. would be fantastic

This guy is just one example of why I said the dad who killed his son's abuser was spot on and why I'd do the same. The justice system let him off time and time again to keep hurting kids, free to escalate his horrific behaviors. Too many predators/abusers get the same light treatment, and kids pay the price because our courts do not value children's safety and well-being enough.

So, I hadn't seen this video yet, but just stumbled over the killing of Seth Williams. I missed a few minutes of it here and there, but I can see the intelligence and sincerity in you Emma. Okay, I'm wondering in and out and doing things, CZcams bumped me to another of your vids. I can't believe I'm telling this publicly, but around 1980, when I was in the 8th grade, I saw this monster face to face. He lived in a city just up the road from the city of Prosser, very near Benton City.
When I saw his face on Reader's Digest some years later, I knew exactly who he was as soon as II saw the photo in the publication.
My friend and I were taking a back road to both of our sisters homes, when a car pulled over to where we were. Somehow the way he was driving split she and I apart and he turned the car so that he was facing the road rather than the direction of the path she and I were headed on. I remeber the car was fairly loud and fast and I think we just got out of thecway. He called us both over to the car, I was on the passenger side, she was on the driver's side. We both went toward the open windows on a sunny day near the end of that 8th grade year. It would have been a Thurday bc I took piano lessons down the road from my sister's house every Thursday - my friend came with me often. She got close enough to see before I did and backed away. When I got to the passenger side, he had an erection and exposed himself to both of us, like the girls in Benton City. He didn't ask us to get into the car that I recall, but I have a fairly good photographic memory and that is a face embedded in my brain forever. I knew he was a little older than us and thought/ prayed he was a Senior and hoped he would be gone by the time we entered 9th grade. I thought he went to PHS at the time, again I prayed and prayed he would be gone when we started high school that fall.
I spent my first days just horrified that I would see him or that he would see me. I watched for a couple of years relieved by 1984 when we graduated.
On the day of the incident, it was fairly hot but we ran the path to our sister's as fast as we could. When we got to our sister's we each went our way.
Murder and torture is horrible, but him exposing himself was hideously scary. I said to him, "you're gross". I had never seen "that thing" he showed me before, we took off but I took one last look back to make sure we weren't being followed. I saw he was highly arched in the seat, which I now know was him masturbating. I know now it aroused him to scare his victims and turned him on enough to do that. The face he made at me was pure satisfaction for what he had done.
When I arrived and went inside,my sister greeted me and instantly knew something was wrong. I was too embarrassed and ashamed too tell her. I was completely unnerved and very upset but I told her, I had just been running. She let it go.
Eventually, I calmed down at her house but as summer drew to an end and high-school approached, fear struck at least until 1983. I knew he had to be an upperclass student bc he was driving, he was driving an older 4 door, blue-green car. I have lived in fear and silence for so long, I still have never told my sister. I told my daughter's so they wouldn't make the same mistake. Having someone expose themselves to you is fearful and it caused a lot of anxiety, but I thank God for being spared unlike many of his other victims.
I graduated high-school married. I loved my husband, but I think I needed his safety as well bc he was a tall, strong football player - it NEVER left my mind and I had his protection over me and locked doors.
By 1985, I was working for a little fashion shop where I worked for 18 years. My employer kept magazines for us when it was quiet in the store. There on the desk was that Reader's Digest, I saw his story and the the photo they featured in the publication. I knew instantly this was the man that scared me for so many years. I knew his face, easily. I don't know what year that was, but I KNEW his face very well, it was burned into my brain.
When they hung him, it was actually publicized on the local news station from Walla Walla, we were able to see some of it. There were people seated there who wanted to see, by that time I knew exactly who he was. I made sure to see that newscast from Walla Walla, I wanted to know he was dead. You could hear the trap release and then you saw his feet behind the wall, that's all they allowed us to see on TV.
I cannot express the feelings of relief that he was dead and my mind was completely relieved, I was no longer his prisoner. He admitted he had exposed himself in small cities not far from Richland. Well, yes, he did.
My best friend and I never really spoke of it again. The day he died, I was never so thankful! It was the day that I read Reader's Digest that we had been approached by a serial killer. I'm relieved of my fears and I'm relieved no one else had to suffer from his evil crimes.
I hate him and DEAD IS RIGHT WHERE HE BELONGS. DEATH ISNT EVEN GOOD ENOUGH.

I now realize I shouldn't have been ashamed but I was and I was so afraid for so long. The fear is gone, but a piece of shame remains. I can't say why, those were innocent days or so I thought. Today, I watch crime shows and pray for the children that are missing and that they be spared of any of depraved minds. His type of mind just doesn't care what they do or who they hurt. He took a piece of my innocence and tortured and killed innocent little ones, I hate him. Dead or not, I hate him. Protect your children and never, ever think a small town is safer. I think they prey on small towns bc of the trust we have for each other.

These beautiful children were once again let down by the system! All those times he should have been put away but wasn't,lead to the murders.... were they thick as shit!? Makes me so angry 😡 why do we keep hearing the same thing over and over?? Thank god for Will!!!!

Makes my blood boil when people get away with things and then go on to kill. Those murders could have been avoided. If I was a judge who let someone "off" who then went on to kill, I would feel responsible for those deaths.
Emma, Living in the Pacific Northwest and living behind a park at the time this was all going on. We did not need to be notified that a Serial Killer was at work we already knew. I was a Teenager at the time so I would walk the neighborhood kids to and from the park. Everyone was on High Alert.

Lee's aunt was living with my family at the time all of this happened. Such a heart breaking and scary time in my youth. Dodd was the first execution by hanging in WA in 30 years at that time.

It’s crazy to know that Dodd took Lee to a store to buy him a toy to try to calm the boy down and there were people who saw Lee crying and commented to Dodd about Lee being upset
Heartbreaking and enraging. People have to quit being afraid to ask questions. Witnesses saw Ted Bundy abducting his last victim, 12 year old Kim Leach, who was crying and clearly upset, but they assumed Bundy was the little girl's father.
I grew up in Vancouver Washington in 1989. I was seven years old and completely terrified when this was going on. I also watched the hanging on the news. This was showed on tv behind a sheet. I also lived a block away from David Douglas Park. 😢
I had never heard of this case. I thought I had heard it all until now. Authorities surely was on his side. Damm those.
The cops and support systems were clueless about predatory behavior back then. The whole forensic psychology thing was still in its infancy. Nowadays I would hope we would take much more seriously early behaviors that lead to interaction with law enforcement, like, say attempted kidnapping!
