I think it’s good for chosen cast to be in the show… so people remember to separate them as actors from the historical characters they portray in one interpretation of a Biblical series.

I pray that we are in the midst of another Jesus revolution with chosen becoming so overwhelming popular . This world is so broken I feel god is this time to remind us that he is and has been you only need to say YES

I went to Calvary Chapel in the late 70's. Chuck was an amazing teacher. Lonnie was used by God to bring in a huge number of young people. Chuck discipled them (us). So many awesome pastors came from that.

I recommend watching the documentary "Frisbee: The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher". It gives an in depth view of Lonnie's struggles and how the church reacted. An eye opener for sure. No spoilers, but there is much more to the story than what I saw at the movie tonight.

I went to see the Jesus revolution this evening with my adult daughter.
I thought it was excellent. Nothing is perfect. But this was a true story also.
I think that many people should see it because it speaks truth and it’s really good for the younger generation to see what the glorious ideas of hippies are not!!
It’s history. I was there at that time, but not a hippie.
I remember all of that. I hope this starts a trend and maybe even a beginning of a revival because we need to all be Jesus freaks for sure.

I too saw this movie. So this wasn’t just a movie for me it was my “coming to Jesus” testimony. I left religion and ran to Jesus Christ after a teen acoustic guitar trio was invited into our very religious church and harmonized the word. I saw with my own eyes that impact these teenagers had on the then (My Generation Z) I believe the movie was excellent however the actor that played Lonnie was not a fit. The person Lonnie actually was fit the stereotype California hippie teen. The trio that played in my church that Sunday in 1973 were blonde sun tanned and creatively dressed. Hahahaha. Praise God. 🌞🌱❤️

This movement came to Minnesota where I lived in the north suburbs of the Twin Cities. I'm sure it was a greater area than this, but I was only 16 so this was all I knew. It hit our church and surrounding churches with the power of the Holy Spirit. This was so very different for our Wesleyan church. It wasn't a Jesus People movement. It was it's own Charismatic movement. It was very powerful!! Miracles happened. But also division. Many left their current church to find a church who allowed the Holy Spirit. It was life changing!! So amazing!!

  • @kyrilascully7828

I saw the first showing of the Early Release and was so excited because I lived that era and was a hippie in Arkansas who met some people from Calvary Chapel as they came east to "evangelize" hippies across the country. I loved the soundtrack--the soundtrack of my youth, and felt the songs chosen were perfect to backdrop the emotion of the scenes. You're right about it being very honest about the brokenness of each character, and I admit it was very difficult watching those scenes where "Lonnie" is exhibiting problems with his Christian experience. I know those things happened pretty much for real, and it did kind of side step some of the more serious backsliding he went through. Still it was tough to watch--and Jonathan did really well portraying that dark side. I met Kelsey in high school when our schools competed in theater competitions--and he won all the awards, so I'm partial to him, and he underplayed Chuck Smith, but that was needed for this film. No grand gestures, but gentle transformations that still have cracks revealing weaknesses. Beautifully portrayed. Joel carried his first major motion picture quite well, and I'm sure his co-stars helped him with that pressure, because he performed as if he had been carrying pictures his whole life. Cinematography and other production values were top game. I thought the sub theme of a young man dealing with abandonment is one that a lot of people--including myself--can resonate with--and to show that God the Father never abandons us--and though Lonnie left Greg, Chuck never did. I really hoped there would be some salvation event for Greg's mom, but not knowing the true nature of their relationship, I guess they open-ended it where they needed to--leaving the viewer hopeful that "mom" would accept Jesus. I did enjoy the movie, and I will go back, and probably buy the DVD. Also I was jumping in my seat when Paras showed up in the cameo and laughed at the exchange they had on screen, kind of an "inside joke" for Chosen fans. That was well played. Thanks, John Erwin, for a great film--and if you need new material, I have a book about a lay minister (dear friend of mine) who was framed on four counts of murder and how I spent seven years trying to prove him innocent. I can send you a copy if you contact me on Facebook Messenger with your contact information.

I got saved during the tail end of the Jesus movement in 1978. I was worried you wouldn’t like this movie. A lot of folks have focused on Lonnie’s flaws later in life and use that to dismiss how God used him. The 70’s was weird and crazy but also an amazing time. Great take brother! I just watched the film last night, too. My hubby and I have been pretty excited about it since it’s been the theme of the Harvest Crusade last year, so we watched it ahead of time. SPOILER ALERT. A common comment about the movie is that there was so much going on, Pastor Chuck’s story, Lonnie’s story and teenage Greg’s story and also some of teenage Cathy’s story. Then of course, the hippies coming to Jesus. Overall, it’s our favorite Christian movie as of now and we’re happy that it’s been reaching a wider audience than just the christian community. (Feel free to delete if spoilers aren’t allowed) Btw, I’m wondering if you watched the new Left Behind. How about if you make a video on that? Glad to meet you! -Hanna

Lonnie Frisbee did indeed repent from his sins, and he returned to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, before his death from AID
Pastors Greg Laurie and Mike MacIntosh were able to visit Lonnie Frisbee, at a hospice facility in Newport Beach, CA, right before his passing. They prayed for Lonnie, who knew that his sin was terribly wrong and that there was no better place to be in this life and eternity than with Jesus.

I agree. I don't hear anyone speculating about whether Greg and Cathe indulged in sexual immorality during their "Free Love" phase. We don't need to know every time these believers stumbled. We can know them by their fruit. Sadly, the Alphabet Mafia want to make gay heroes out of anyone who has ever been tempted. Lonnie himself stated for the record that he never lived a gay lifestyle. That is good enough for me.

I particularly support the point made about characters in Christian films needing to be more multi-dimensional, and showing their flawed, human side. The Bible is replete with these kinds of examples and there is nothing wrong with the audience leaving the theaters realizing that, for example, Lonnie Frisbee was a very troubled man who met with a sad end. The Chosen shows this kind of vulnerability and I'm glad this film does so as well. The Father uses all kinds of people in so many different ways! Looking forward to seeing it on Sunday. :)

Now, knowing how they display the "faults" in the characters, I might watch once it comes out streaming. I'm still on the fence about going to the theater. I've only gone to the theater 4 times in the past year; The Chosen Christmas show, and the Season 3 final. The other 2 times were for my brother visiting from out of state. I got saved on a street corner in Greenwich Village NYC in 1976, praying with the Forever Family, one of the many controlled cults coming out of that movement. The salvation was real, and the dragon waiting for our rebirth to devour us was real, too. I'm afraid to watch this movie because I turned on, tuned in, and dropped out and then found Yeshua. I read the Bible before ever going to a church and was shocked at some of their doctrines, like pretrib rapture. No wonder Lonnie lost his way. LSD showed him a truth that no one who has not done LSD can ever understand. Trying to turn him into a good republican, which I'm sure Chuck Smith tried to do, is the reason why he back slid. I back slid in the 80's, too, when the things the Evangelicals taught me turned out to be off the mark, and tied up with amerkkka worship. Back then, Pat Robertson was paying for gun running to Central America to fight the Contras. We are supposed to love our enemies. Be ware of non hippie Christians!!! Turn on, tune in, drop out, get saved, stay out!

The director of the JESUS REVOLUTION movie, Jon Irwin, personally sought out Pastor Greg Laurie, to make this film based on the historical time in American history specifically, through the LENS of Greg and Cathe Laurie. Also, based on the TIME magazine cover (and article) entitled JESUS REVOLUTION, and Pastor Greg Laurie's book of the same name.
Director Jon Irwin's intention was to make the 1/3 storyline about Pastor Greg Laurie, his and his now wife, Cathe Laurie's conversion to Christianity, and their love story, which is an important part of the film.
The real focus of the film is the JESUS REVOLUTION itself and the Jesus movement that swept across this nation, and the world, which literally changed the lives of tens of millions.

Wow, so much hatred. Not a Christian value--we are to love those who hate us, and especially reach out to those we don't understand. The Outcasts are the ones Jesus singled out to find. The sinners and prostitutes, etc. Not to condemn them, but to show them a better way. I hope you learn to let go of your hatred. Plus, I'm well aware of the Moonies and Krishnas, as we used to hand out Bible tracts to them on the street corners while we played our hand held instruments (Guitars, harmonicas, autoharps, tambourines, bongos, whatever else we could easily carry) and sang Scripture songs. There were also Children of God, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Ba'hai, and others we witnessed to of the love and power of Jesus. I would say those who joined some of those groups were not attracted to Christianity at all---not people who tried it and left Christianity for Sun Yeung Moon or Buddhism or Hinduism. And they were mostly following after the Beatles anyway. Speaking of which, Ringo accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and Paul converted to Judaism. I could name dozens of popular Rock Stars who have come to know Christ, and have even attended church with a couple of them. You're right--Satan always has an anti-movement to counter the workings of God through the Holy Spirit, and certainly tried to hijack the love fest at Asbury the last two weeks. To their credit, school officials made the right calls to toss them off campus and shut it down on a specific date.

Bro! There are MANY things wrong with this movie, and you DIDN’T touch on ANY of them.

This sounds like a movie I'd want to skip as a Christian. Was the simple Gospel (1. Corinthians 15:1-4) ever taught in this movie, or is it all about feelings, experiences but not truth, like the mayhem going on at Asbury right now? If it's a false Gospel, then it's a false "revival" (and they invariably are false because people are so easily deceived by emotional experience and not the truth), a false Jesus and not the Holy Spirit.

Why can't revival involve feelings and experiences? I agree with you that if it's all about a spiritual high with no real conversion, then it's a waste of time. However, unless you are God, you can't call what's going on at Asbury "mayhem". You have no idea what God is doing there.

@@misspriss2482 I have an idea because I've seen clips of that false revival and the Gospel was never once taught. It was all about "repent of your sins" (which neither Christ nor His apostles ever taught) and get baptized to be saved. That is not the Gospel. It's a false gospel that saves nobody. The Gospel in a nutshell is 1. Corinthians 15:1-4, or in the book of Acts where Paul told the Philippian jailer how to be saved: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." Grace alone through faith alone, in Christ ALONE is how to be saved. That's not the Spirit of God at Ashbury, it's the Charismatic/Pentecostal spirit and it's downright demonic. I'm not buying it. False gospel = false "revival". It happened in the Jesus Movement, it happened in Azuza Street and it's happening now at Asbury. False gospel = no salvation. It's sad that so many are buying into this ecumenical movement that's straight out of the pits of hell.

I would like to assure you that the Jesus Movement was a GENUINE REVIVAL! And yes, it was highly charged emotionally as a RESULT OF BEING SAVED, WASHED IN THE BLOOD, BEING GIVEN HOPE WHEN THERE WAS NONE, AND FINDING TOTAL PURPOSE IN HIM! The joy of having found Him of Whom your heart longed was palpable. But this new faith also craved information about Christ, and Bible Studies with sound teaching were gobbled up. Also, though works themselves don't save, tone of the litmus test is to ask are the converts displaying fruit of the Spirit and going about doing good? Another resounding YES! Giving people the in literal shirts off their backs was common as was the free sharing in of worldly goods. Many helpful ministries were founded. ( A good example of this would be to view "The Keith Green Story" where Melanie, Keith's wife tells their story and it's a case study of the times then-from unbelieving hippies to fruit producing abundantly believers.)
You pose a good question. But examination and research and TALKING TO US,THE JESUS FREAKS THEMSELVES (yes, many/most of us are still alive 😄, may be quite re-assuring

@@ms7953 Oh wow, I'd love to talk to you since I've never met a member of that movement (I'm in Germany so I wouldn't anyway). But I do have one question right off the bat. If I asked you how to be saved and how to know I'm saved, what would your response be?

    • @ms7953

@@beautyforashes3929 Hello! I think the most direct scriptures would be Romans 10:9" If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Of course this is on a discussion on of Who Christ is.) And a good pairing with Romans would be Ephesians 2:8,9 "For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God lest anyone should boast (or so no one can boast.)" As to the question of how do I know I am saved? The most concise answer would be- I know on the authority of God's word. If someone needs that explained, we used to say "God said it, I believe it,that settles it." I think most believers struggle with this at some point or points in their lives, especially when the enemy of our souls brings it up. I have used on occasion used this excercise which I observed by someone else many years ago. If someone has doubts or is troubled about their salvation, I ask them if they want to be a Follower, even if they feel they are. I say, "Well, let's make sure." We get a piece of paper and pen, and write these 2 verses (Romans and Ephesians) on that paper. Then I ask, "Do you confess Him with your mouth?"
If they say yes, I say, "Go ahead, tell me Who Jesus is." And maybe also some other things about Christ- His purpose, His death, His resurrection, His return, that He came in the flesh, resurrected and has sat down at the right-hand of God, etc. Important things to say aloud. And that He has covered their sin, and they have asked for forgiveness, and want to follow Him. Then I have them sign and date that paper right under the verse from Romans. Then they write out the verse from Ephesians, read it aloud, explain it, then sign beneath it with the date and their signature. Then I tell them, " Next time the enemy or your own soul doubts your salvation, you say "That's a lie" and pull this paper out and say, " On this date, I was saved on the authority of God's Word." Then go seek His face as His lamb and ask where you need help or if He is prompting you to examine an area in their life. Having the actual date seems very, very helpful in resisting the enemy. And especially for new or not as committed individuals, it is a good reminder that the stirring they feel may indeed be something that He is bringing to light to work on.
**I Am SO SORRY I FOUND ON RE-READING MY ANSWER I DIDN'T TYPE THE FULL ROMANS VERSE. I tried to fix it but HERE IT IS JUST IN CASE:
" If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9
