I decided to build a new front splitter out of wood. The splitter itself is more solid than my previous front splitter and cost less than $50.

built mine from 12mm marine ply and some fibreglass. works great.
Dude this is awesome, im actually building one right now for my 98 lexus sc400.
Real good video really
awesome diy!
Thanks! Now build one for your E36! LOL
Nice DIY as always, Sean. I really like that you are budget conscious on all your mods. At first I thought that “wood” was a company name. Haha!!! What did you use for the wrap on the splitter/wood edge? That is not just gloss black spray paint. Thanks for another E46 M3 track car vid! I appreciate your work, ingenuity, build style and track skills.
awesome dude, like everytime !!!! perfect job =)
Thanks!
Nice video Steve!
Thanks bro!
Very cool
Thanks Blake!
wow, very supportive.
Yes, better than before. :-)
I want to try this for my build but I was wondering would this be a fire hazard? Dumb question I know😅
Think of it this way, if it were really getting that hot down there, the plastic would have caught on fire from the factory
Where did you buy the rear spoiler?
BimmerWorld. Here you go: czcams.com/video/WDsxXzks6Uo/video.html
You could use that to make a mold and then make it out of carbon fiber. Making parts out of carbon can be time consuming, so maybe as a "disposable part" its not worth the time? It sure would be lighter.
Anyway, it looks good!
There's a good idea but I don't have any carbon fiber or fiber glass skills. :-)
Is the hard motor spliter for saleeee?
I don't think you want it. The front lip is slightly bent and I drilled a few extra holes in certain areas. :-)
Look great but how much does it weigh compared to the splitter you removed?
I didn't weigh it but it felt lighter, plywood isn't as heavy as other types of solid wood. Also, since the splitter is at the lowest point of the car, a few lbs here or there will be immaterial - unlike removing weight from higher spots (roof, windows, etc).
@@SeanS54 you also have to consider the fact that its adding weight all the way on the nose of the car and even past it. A few pounds will make a bigger difference there rather than in between the axles.
sjpro1 This plywood splitter is lighter than the hard Motorsport one so it’s still weight reduction. Not only that the weight added is nothing compared to the aerodynamic benefit the undertray/splitter provides
Looks heavy as fuck!
Its always better fabricated your own track parts. I did the same 😉
Yup! LOL
Looks good. If you want to go lighter look for alumilite.
Thanks James. Yes, that's an option but a little more expensive and harder to come by (~$150 a sheet, sign shop?).
Probably just me but would like to see better how you had the car up in the air.. Stand locations and stuff.
I place jack stands on the jack pads (side of the car) and I usually have a back up jack, jack stands, or wheels underneath the car just in case. To lift the front, there's a round jack pad in the center bottom, front. To lift the rear I use the subframe "bar" in front of the diff. Here's a good guide: www.google.com/search?q=e46+m3+jack+points&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=JSPGSoqAYEQIrM%253A%252CAJQWWKfxxex10M%252C_&usg=__abdRfuf3o2oLJWZuBIXsNyymnTI%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj2or2dq7DbAhWkOH0KHehOBcUQ9QEILTAB#imgrc=JSPGSoqAYEQIrM:
SeanS54 ah ok. Managed to pause the video at start and see where your other two jack stands were and that the rear was on the ground. Cheers for the reply
It's okay spliter made out of wood on a bmw ! I thought it was better to make out of bamboo sticks!
Wood is heavy and likely to crack or chip
This plywood actually felt lighter than my previous splitter. I agree about cracking and chipping but since it's so cheap, it would be easy to build a new one.

You should trace and cut a template (out of plywood or otherwise) incase you need to replace yours. It'll be faster the second time around.
yes, I did. :-)
Atrocious!
lol someones never been to the track
