- Manchester-based, Malawi-born comedian Daliso Chaponda will be talking about the counterintuitive notion that where painful things have occurred or are occurring you often find that comedy is not far behind. As an example, during his star turn on Britain’s Got Talent, Daliso made light of his home country’s poverty when he informed the audience he was from Malawi and said, “If any of you don’t know where that is, it’s where Madonna adopted all the babies from… I do miss my little brother.” So what’s going here. Why do painful realities and comedy so often partner up? Daliso Chaponda has been a stand-up comedian since 2001 beginning his career in Canada. He moved to the UK in 2006 where he opened for other comedians such as John Bishop. In 2008, his comedy earned him a spot in the Edinburgh Fringe “Best of the Fest” list. Daliso shot to primetime fame in 2017 when his audition for Britain’s Got Talent received a golden buzzer from judge Amanda Holden with his BGT performances going viral on social platforms and receiving 200m views.
Daliso has since continued to appear regularly in broadcast media including The Royal Variety Performance 2020 (ITV), Britain’s Got Talent Champions 2019 (ITV), QI (BBC2), The Apprentice: You’re Fired (BBC2), Good Evening Britain (ITV), The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), and The Now Show (BBC Radio 4).
Daliso is also the writer, creator, and host of his Rose d’Or nominated BBC Radio 4 show Citizen of Nowhere that has aired for two series. Born in Zambia to Malawian parents, he now resides in Manchester. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. He is just brilliant, understands human behavior like none other and is able to talk just about anything that somehow could be slightly embarrassing or 'not done'. You just keep at it and enlighten the world!
200 years ago this would have been an auction is one of the best one liners I've ever heard, it gets me every time.
It’s been almost a whole day without comments. Probably because we’re all speechless.
This is incredible. Well articulated and communicated. Thank you Daliso Chaponda
I love the Daliso method. I remember slavery joke from BGT and it was very hilarious. Thank you for giving the world another weapon in our arsenal to fight trauma. God bless you ❤️
A highly intelligent person this guy is.
Love this man, he has a great sense of humour. I struggle with depression and anxiety and I have a very warped sense of humour that is what gets me through. So he is right, add some humour to your situation and it will help.
👏❤️
Daliso is such a true inspirational figure, he really love to share his own feeling and his observation on reality events through his humor joke, when I saw him the very first time on BGT, I already like this person not just he has that humor, he also got a big heart. At the same time, he is the very first comedian writing joke without any offensive languages.
Hi maureen. My teenage Chilean daughter had depression & we spent 4months together in my native india, and she saw the teeming millions of people travelling, selling, working walking but all with hopes/plans to have a better life but facing the hardships in their own way all around, made her think/react on how lucky she is to have what she had back home and now she is back in the university in a much better state of mind. Just wanted to let you know. Hope you are good now & wish you the best
Huge fan, love all your jokes and what a great mindset! Maybe next TedTalk could be a workshop on being funny and cracking jokes about yourself! Congrats on the gig Daliso 👏
I’m a big fan of this guy since I saw him on BGT! Brilliant comedian 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If it hadn’t been for comedy, in my case dark humour, I would not been alive today.
But I learned to laugh about hurtful, dark and depressing stuff in my life from my mother.
I am so grateful to have that gift in my life; humour in, and about, dark and terrible things x)
And yes: God have a great sense of humour!
Very very smart, humble, insightful, wise, and totally inspiring.
Thank you Dr. Daliso for this wisdom. It is exactly what I needed. Greetings from a huge fan from Croatia.
This method is priceless in every sense of the word.. doesn't cost a cent but can't be bought.
I love intelligent comedy ❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
unbelieveable how accurate that sounds ... I actually learned the 'comedy way'/'daliso method' ... relive it until you find something to laugh about - there always is that one part (even on the darkest days there is a possibility for joy)
I love Daliso Chaponda's comedy. We have to treasure and protect this man.
Recently discovered the guy and now I'm a huge fan!
Brilliant, simply brilliant.
This man is much more than just a comedian. He’s a teacher. I feel more intelligent just from listening to him.
Comedians are honest healers...
The Daliso Method got me and yeah, I will be doing it from now on. I didn't realize the speech was 14 plus minute long. It seemed so short. I wish he could have talked more. The minutes flew by.
Me sentiments exactly. Listening to him I was somewhere between laughing and intrigued at his pure genius. What a guy ❤️❤️🥳🥳
"I think it is time for the Daliso's method: Relive it, but change some facts; MAKE YOURSELF THE WINNER! "Great new Paradigm! Congrats and thank you.
12:49 "Sometimes you feel ashamed for things you should not feel ashamed about." Amen to that!
Oh! My! Life is Beautiful is one of my favourite movies of all time.
Wow, I love this guy. He seems like such a good human being, and so funny.
This is how I like comedy. The truth!
This guy is one of the best comedians I know. I wish I could attend to his show one day☺
Am a fan. Love your jokes about africa. Wish you come to Nairobi
Infact he will always make my bad day a very memorable day with his comedy and he exposes the world view about Africa to everyone. More so, he is an educationist with a lot of experience in lighting listeners with his unique jokes. Simply the best comedian. Love you.
I was fascinated with this. Therapy through humor for bad situations or memories. I love it. I love this suggestion to rehabilitate. And I was fascinated with this. I'll have to try it.
Been a fan of Daliso’s since BGT. He is a fantastic comic. Would love to see him in his own sitcom!
He plays the role of the Court Jester - who tells the King the truth in a humourous way. The King is vain and humour is used so as not to offend his ego.
Finally glad to see more of you on YT from Chile.
Thanks man
Always! Always fantastic! 👏👏👏
Humor has to be the tool to shed light on the truth which helps us to reflect on it in a very optimistic way i am grateful for stand up comedians and any art containing comedy
Wow man. You are a great help to the people
Loved listening to this..Laughter is therapy indeed.
Daliso, great and true man, many thanks indeed!
Rebuking historical wrongs and societal misgivings through comedy. He's enticingly and amusingly provocative😂. That's a top-notch creativity. Kenyans love you, Daliso. Do your thing, Amigo!
He is awesome! I like him tons!
He is so funny. Love him
Oh I can’t believe how wonderful and healing that was. Especially for me about the game “Operation”! I needed to hear that. Thank you! I love all your humor!
Thank you so much for talking about humour to heal. You’ve inspired me, and you’re my new role model. Looking for more from you ❤️
One of my favourite people 💪
I'm a very huge fan, more love from this side
I've found this guy recently and I just love his non-PC humour! He is totally right ğas soon as anything bad happens people start cracking jokes about it (looking at you, my beloved 9gag, the community which we are proud of!)
Daliso is one serious comedian. Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
If Malawi was the influence for other comedians like he is, he's the best! I know Chappelle, but you better know Chaponda! 🤣❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you 🤩👏👏👏👏 you gave us a gift of healing ❤️🩹 through jokes & laughter . I think it’s wonderful
Dalitso is naturally funny. What a gem.
Real talk well done, 👍
Very funny and therapitic. So awsome. Keep it up.
Fantastic!
A new breed of comedy.....keep going heights
Great!✨♥️
Thanks, I did this sort of thing when I was a kid and still do, I was told by others that I should not say this or that about myself. However always in the back of my mind was that IF made fun of myself it took the STING out difficult / bullying situations, since in my mind I did not believe it about myself.
Respect 🥂 powerful stuff🥺
This man is genius loce him. Going to heed his advice. Love him
so good. so talented man
Clever man!
10:10 Speaking of modern trauma therapy: this is, what's actually done. E.g., read about the IRRT rational. There you imagine the traumatic sequence/situation (with help of a therapist) AND then you introduce a helping figure/person into this stream of memories, helping your younger self. It's not easy, but very effective.
Great Ted talk 👍🏽
Amazing stuff
What an absolute genius.❤️
This man is a legend let hope we can all live in peace and harmony after all we are all God's children and we all go to the same place in the end
Great Piece
This is very true n much applicable... Sometimes we make jokes over things that were so hurting back in em days
Look at us now 😂... Well said daliso
I've become a massive fan.
About almost wining “ always a bridesmaid, never a bride “ 😂
sharp guy in deed
Great guy!
I am so sorry I cannot help provide a healing joke for him... but I got nothing bad to say about him. Dude is hilarious. This was a great talk, but his standup routines are wonderful! 😎
4:00
This realy hits hard with the whole underwater can decompresion
He is very, very intelligent!...
It s very sensitive thinking and action .Good for him to give this show from that point of view.
1-2 more months left for that joke 🤣.
Awesome talk and the truth was said about laughing about painful things.
There are people who say funny things and there are people who say things funny. And then there are people like Daliso who can do both. Irish comedian Frank Carson's catchphrase was "It's the way I tell 'em" because he was acknowledging that some of the jokes were not necessarily all that funny in themselves. His delivery was the key. Daliso has both the content and the delivery.
Intelligent, original and with a PHD in psychology!! 😅😂
I have extremely advanced fibromyalgia so I deal with constant physical and emotional pain and I cope a lot with fairly dark humor. Sometimes my bf asks why I constantly deflect with jokes and why I can't just be real and I tell him if I didn't somehow turn this pain into something I can laugh about, even if he doesn't think it's funny, I wouldn't be able to survive it.
as a person with depression, I am appreciative of my developed humor 🤣
great guy
I’m your fan
I love this guy! Where do we see more?
CZcams-- duh!!
Interestingly his point about reliving trauma and changing the outcome is not far from what the psychotherapeutic method of psychodrama aims to do.
Great
I LIKE DALISO HE SAY GOOD THINGS.
La vita e bella all the way
IMO, it’s hardly an unlikely partnership. It’s a big part of how we survive and transcend pain.
This is so true. Every time something bad happens and my wife is mad, I tell her "after a few months or years this will be something hilarious to bring up".
❤😂daliso 😅 very true cery genuine .
If you haven't watched his comedy please do.
yeah well, you have to be so emotionally intelligent to understand this, man if we could just teach these emotional tips to everyone the world is gonna be something else.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Genius. That what he is
Have all the comments been deleted??
Probably
喜樂的心是靈药
憂傷的心使靈苦乾
Tragedy + time is a comedy. What is the tragedy in your life and become comedy?
That why suicide people love suicidal joke
it not the joke itself urge us to do so
but it relieve us by thinking
"Wow, that worst idea since people would laugh if my suicide attempt failed that badly"
Is this related to Will smith and that comedian guy
he kind of sounds and looks likes Mr. Popo(Dragon ball)
what do you buy from the slavery Museum gift shop ? Chains ?
I have really enjoyed your acts and this talk, I think you are brilliant in your craft and very funny. I push back though on this "look what you people did" sentiment. It was maybe just a punch line for you, but it permeates so many discussions and attitudes...and is wrong. I didn't do anything. Isn't lumping me in with the white people that participated in slavery rather blatant racism? Racism isn't going to be diminished with more racism.
