+Euphorica I agree that lots of people talk shit about things they do not on, this is the internet after all. Having said that class action law suit don't come out of nowhere. And Porsche has been sued in such as suit for 2001 to 2005 models using the M96 engine. That is fact. It's one of the things that kept me from buying a Porsche from that generation, because you can't tell if an engine without IMS upgrade has caused damage already. Or can you?
Do a good pre-purchase inspection and replace the IMS and RMS if you have no records. Problem solved, it's not an issue then. If someone is looking to purchase a 996 and does not have the means to get this done, they need not be looking to purchase this car.
A PPI won't involve inspecting the IMS as that is an engine out job. So you could end up with a car that has already had engine damage sustained. Or is there a way to tell even in its early stages? A Porsche shop advised me that you sometimes can tell from the oil (material) but if somebody is dishonest and does and oil change before the sale there's no way to diagnose this. If you know otherwise please share.
I have such a soft spot for the 3.4 liter 996 Carreras. So much of Porsche 911 history has been appealing to enthusiasts with more flares and wings and vents, and yeah of course I love me some 964 Turbo Ss and 993 Carrera RS 3.8s and 930s and all that jazz...but as much as the 996 cribbed the 986 componentry, I felt the slim fender look was a harkening back to the original 911. Just a slippery shape that was very clean, and the way they're aging, to my eyes, is proving that it was a good design. A 1999 911 that's well kept doesn't look 16 years old in terms of design.
I love the 996, it's honestly my favorite 911. I love the luscious curves, rear vents and long bar taillight design of the 996, such a beautiful clean design.
PistolWhip Sadly, many cool cars are destroyed in america for belonging to criminals or dealers. Instead of making cash for the state, they throw them away.
Purists don't like the headlights or interior I was one of them, then I drove a 996GT3 and I couldn't have been more wrong, they are all 911s and utterly amazing to drive.
I was never really into Porsches, but I needed a winter car while I rebuilt my Subaru and I'll be honest, it was kind of a disappointment to drive. With its reputation of being a 911 (996.1 C4), I was expecting something better than all my other cars in every way, but that's not the reality of it. I have an MR2 (MK2 NA), FC RX-7 and Legacy GT wagon B5. In terms of acceleration and speed, I'd say it's slightly better than the LGT, but not by much (this could be in issue somewhere in the car, I'm not 100% sure yet), in handling it felt a lot heavier than I was expecting and didn't corner nearly as well as the MR2, maybe on par with the RX-7, braking honestly felt the worst of the 4 to me, not sure why, but it never stopped in what distance I expected it to. The interior was decent, but nothing special. It's expected because of the age difference, but the LGT interior is much nicer. The one thing I will say was nice about the 996 was that it's very smooth going into 5th. In the other cars it was always a chore to shift right and up, but in the 996, it goes right in. In terms of value, It's very similar to the STI in price, power and having AWD, so I'd say it's worth it, but keep in mind for like half the price, you could have a car nearly as good. It's really not a car I'd recommend to someone besides as an investment though. In terms of a performance car, I'd say the MR2 Turbo is a much better buy or for daily use, a Legacy GT
Fantastic wheels on that 996, I love them! I like the 996, I don't understand the big hate on it. Here in Europe you can get a pre-facelifted C2 or C4 for roughly 15-20k euros with max 150k kms. Nices cars and the cheapest way to drive a 911
The quick glamour shots in the beginning are appreciated Matt. Makes the video a lot better while still keeping costs low. Great price on that Porsche!
I’m seriously thinking of getting out of my WRX next year, and a 996 is definitely on the radar. It’ll be slightly less powerful but I don’t care. No WRX can match the sheer feel and precision of a 996, not to mention the flat-6 howl 🤙🏽
I love that people hate them like they do, AND now we have the IMA going at it as well. All in all, most people still forget this is a Porsche. I am all for the plummeting value, because it'll allow more people like this kid to experience a car they generally would not afford. You can't get much for 10k...and a 996 with a manual box is certainly worth owning at that price.
A couple of years ago, one of my dad's friends divorced his wife of 30+ years, bought a new Boxster, and started dating a girl 15 years younger than him. A few weeks after his friend got his Boxster, my dad bought a 996 with 35k miles for 19K. I think he spent another 3K on the IMS retrofit, clutch and brakes. His friend came over with his girlfriend to check it out. The first thing the girl said when she got out of the car and saw my dad's 911 was "he has a real Porsche." He no longer has the girl, but he is still making payments on the Boxster.
Wow! 155K miles and still looks nice. And it made it to 155k on the original, single row IMS? I just picked up a very nice black 1999 996 C2 for $11,000 in Illinois from a private owner with 102K miles. No leaks and likely still has the original dual row IMS. I plan to change out the IMS and RMS over winter just for peace of mind. I'll do it myself however I've received quotes from 2 respectable specialty shops for $2,000 parts & labor for the ceramic IMS and RMS seal which is certainly tempting vs doing myself. As far as not being that fast, low 5's 0-60 for a non-turbo 3.4L 911 works for me. As a current mark I 928 owner, I researched the snot out of this car before buying one and knew the issues beforehand. One thing that has been pointed out with this model is to stay away from low mileage garage queens. These 996's are an excellent choice as long as you know what your getting into.
I've heard it said a lot that, if the car made it to high miles without an IMS failure, it's unlikely to have one. I was looking at a 150k mile Boxster and the locak Porsche mechanic gave me a big list of non-IMS things to be more worried about. Of course as soon as I drove it, the thing turned out to be a fantastic motor in a basketcase chassis. Go figure.
Wow, I daily drive an 01 996 C2 Carrera Cab! It has muffler cat deletes and sounds amazing. Matt I'm 6'9" 260 and for me the best upgrade I did was the T96 steering wheel. I had the same problem with knee bumping, and that smaller diameter D ring fixed it. The conversion in total was only around $1k to do. I only paid $15k for mine with 60k miles, and it already had the IMS done. They really are a bargain buy now. It's a great cheap reliable DD to have.
I wanted to give a LOUD THANK YOU to LN Engineering and Flat 6 Innovations for returning us a much more reliable and the most affordable 911 you can currently buy. While no Porsche will ever be 100% problem free, their great work contributed to the 996 (and early boxters) getting a second look and new life. When everyone catches on, I'll be willing to bet prices go up.
Nice to see an expensive car like that with high miles! Awesome video, and funny comments too I hope someone on here in California has a Volvo V40 (the old ones from 2001-2004) and/or a Matrix XRS/Vibe GT with that 2ZZ.
Wow. Great buy!!! Makes me regret how I spent my car money. Who could pass up a $10k 911. God I wish I had found that deal before I went the direction I did.
If you put smaller tires and wheels you will feel a big difference in the performance of the car. In my opinion 295 tires and 19" wheels are to big for this car. Anyway for that amount of money this guy has bought himself a really nice car.
Can you please tell me more about your wheels? size/offset/price/tyres? I love them and I want some too. How did you lower it so much and how did lowering it/the wheels effect the feel of the car? Cheers.
I recently purchased a 99 Carrera convertible w a 6 speed manual for 30k miles for $18k I love it it's still tight as new and a blast to drive I love it!
alexlam24 no it was not replaced and I haven't really got around to it it's probably going to be 1500$ but all together great car gives me no problems love it
great video, watched it a few times before buying my 996.2 3.6l Targa. interesting it looks lower than stock yet there no A/M springs listed in the equipment list ?
ims failure rates are between 1 and 8 percent. Too high, but not high enough for everyone to shit on them. Personally i plan to replace mine when i do the clutch, simple as that.
Thanks, there are great cars. To many wanna bees, non drivers, non owners just repeat what they hear or read on the internet with no real owner experience.
+Doogie Spence simple supply and demand: the 996 was the most sold Porsche in history with 170.000 Cars. So there's probably more 996 Porsches on the market than People wanting to have it. The "horrible" front lights and first water cooled Engine make it a bad choice for Porsche enthusiasts. That's why the price dropped over the time..
+TechStyle so only why Android has ~70% of the Smartphone market (sorry for Bad English) and Apple around 20%, this means to you that Android is the more commercially successful? (Which is according to numbers actually the other way round the Apple store is generating more money than google play store) Yes the first words on Google say that the 997 was the most commercially successful but this is because of intelligent selling and rising prices of a 911 www.total911.com/the-six-most-popular-porsche-911s-of-all-time/ shows it roughly as well I only said that the 996 is the most sold generation of 911 and this many cars means more cars than people wanting to own one adding up to the 996 not being an young/old timer yet, as well.
Matt's a great guy and has experienced more cars than most of us will in our entire life time. Yet 3 years later it's interesting to revisit this One take and hear Matt's comments about the 996 when Matt was just starting One Takes and also just being introduced to many different generations of Porsche's. Matt mentions that it's not that fast, but the 996 3.4 liter has always been a screamer with power coming on strong above 5000 rpm and pulls hard to 7000 rpm. I don't think Matt really gave the 996 a fair shake and proper drive on these tight and twisting roads where he never really got to ring it out and feel the power. I can tell he spent most of his time between 3000-5000 rpm. The 996 3.4 is a momentum car for sure. Also what is very interesting is that 3 years and 600 one takes later and many Porsche 911's driven under Matt's belt, Matt decided to chose a much slower, not as well handling, and inferior braking Porsche 911 to buy for his own personal collection. Goes to show you that Matt saw the light about what makes Porsche's special. It's not necessarily the straight line speed, but how the car makes you feel submersed in the driving experience and connected to the road like no other car no matter the speed. You can enjoy these cars going slow or fast. Nice to see Matt warm up to Porsche after all these one takes. There really is no substitute. ;^)
Who does this guy think he is? His comments show he is not exactly on top of his game. Typical unfounded 996 mocking, amplified hearsay of hearsay. He mocks the brakes even if he doesn't go very fast and no way near the braking limit. Talk guy!
The one to try and which is surprisingly great among the non GT 996s is the 40th anniversary. Well underrated 345bhp engine and almost as raw and fast as a GT3 on the road ... And some have modified it as GT3 rivalling race cars. Awesome cars and really cheap.
TheSmokingTire HELL FKN YEA, i have a clk55 and wish i could have you drive it. Too bad I'm in nyc. Hopefully that review is up soon. Would love to see your opinion on it.
I totally agree that's why I'm Offering my 2015 designo edition E63 type s AMG that's been modified and I'm interested in the smoking tire could test my car up in the canyons.
EminentLine we are doing a pair of RX7's for tuned next month: one has a boosted rotary making around 500 HP, the other has an LS3. Should be interesting.
I believe it was the modded 335i Matt drove last week, or maybe the week before. The video should be easily found on the Smoking Tire channel or even in the "Up Next" section of this video.
When are you coming to NJ? I'm putting a smaller turbo to replace my current turbo on my Subaru and i feel like you should drive it. It should make 450 ish when all is said and done. Built motor, built heads, brembos, suspension work and more.
A full-blooded porsche, with porsche feel, that makes you look and feel expensive as hell, all at a price that can reasonably be expected to end up in the parking lot of a high school - ask me how I know. I am in love.
Mulholland Highway, Agoura Hills near Malibu. Between Cornell Road and Kanan Road. Known as the 'Snake' by motorcyclists or the 'Rock Store Climb' by cyclists. Go early like in the video or on a weekday. The road gets crowded by noon by drivers and motorcyclists trying the canyon.
Yay! about to pull the trigger on this exact model. Of course I need to get rid of a car first. I hate the steering wheel position, and it doesn't move up/ down. I get why... but, still.
I got an AMG that's 2013 e63 Biturbo modified by Weistec after having stock performance package from AMG but I know you already did a segment on the preface lift Biturbo m157 from Weistec and I'd like to see my new 2015 E63 designo type S be tested by you and I'm in SoCal in Orange County. Completely different beast compared to my Rwd the awd system hooks up much better barely any tire squeal also it's been modified and I think it be great for the canyons if you're interested let me know. I know the previous post was a guy from Canada with the cls63. So for the AMG fans it might be great thing to get your opinion of the car and see how it feels. Thanks again Sean
TheSmokingTire Matt is there a release schedule for these videos? I'm really enjoying them but I'm constantly checking CZcams for an upload and I hate the disappointment when there is not anything new.
Christopher Garcia most of the time one takes go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This one went up on a friday because I'm in Dubai working on /DRIVE, and with the very long work days combined with the time change, I just couldn't get it done.
sgfreak96 I know. I've been looking for one but I'm finding ones for $20-$25k and they all have over 100k on them. I test drove one and it was very well maintained but I'm having a bit of a hard time justifying over $20k for one. In addition to that I'm sure there will have to be some suspension components here and there that need tending to among other things. Gonna have to keep looking.

otherwise you would have to rely on paper work from previous owner(s) showing it was replaced.
Just how I feel about mine 👍
"996 turbos in the high 30k's".... 4 years later their in the high 60k's
Lol yeah they even surpassed the 997s
Now it’s 70s in 2021 :(. My cayman will have to suffice.
I love the 996, it's honestly my favorite 911. I love the luscious curves, rear vents and long bar taillight design of the 996, such a beautiful clean design.
reminds me of a shark, looking in the side mirrors the hips are cool.
***** I can see that! Cool perspective man. 💯
the long bar taillight is only one awd models though
Yeah! That's one of my favorite features of the car. I long for the winter to be over so that I can take it out again
S models only

I love the purity of the base 911 Carrera's. No gimmicks just understated German engineering. Classy not flashy.
"everybody shits" on these cars? It seems that a lot of the people that are promoting those myths are not 996 owners. 996's are great cars.
Eric Yingling It seems that most people who talk shit can't even afford a Porsche to begin with

Great chemistry between you guys for this video. I laughed quite a bit.
...very nice video. Have a 99' 996 don't drive the car much but when I do its such a nice combination of speed, handling and looks...thanks!
This man got one hell of a deal! Perfect track rat at that price
It’s so funny watching these older videos and seeing what Matt thought made a good car. Nowadays he’d never criticize this car for not being “fast”
I appreciate this format, driving used, real cars that the average Joe could own. Thanks.
Porsche build quality is stellar. Fix their glitches and they will run forever and look beautiful.

One word for this review, breathtaking!!!!!!!
Chris seems to be a happy smiling fella. Can imagine with a porsche 996 at your disposal. Wicked!
Great series idea, Matt!!
Wow! What a bargain. Great car. Congratulation
Nice to see an expensive car like that with high miles! Awesome video, and funny comments too

Amaxitrella Was the IMS replaced before or after you got it? Want to get one next year if I have enough money from my internship or job.
alexlam24 no it was not replaced and I haven't really got around to it it's probably going to be 1500$ but all together great car gives me no problems love it
Amaxitrella Just saying... You should replace it. IMS can happen at anytime. Forums have IMS grenading the engine at 100k and at 10k
i absolutely love the 996
great video, watched it a few times before buying my 996.2 3.6l Targa.
interesting it looks lower than stock yet there no A/M springs listed in the equipment list ?

That's what I did! Phenomenal cars.
Thanks, there are great cars. To many wanna bees, non drivers, non owners just repeat what they hear or read on the internet with no real owner experience.
Chris or Matt, how much did the preventative engine maintenance (rod, etc..) cost on this 996?
Awesome! How does this 911 Carrera do in the snow? I'm thinking of purchasing one of these!
It's not about massive 1000 horsepower. Handling, ride comfort, braking, shifting, etc, is what a car review should be based on.
those swirl marks though! apart from that, seems like a cracking car! :)
$10,000.... How is that possible.. How the fuck is that possible.

Yes the first words on Google say that the 997 was the most commercially successful but this is because of intelligent selling and rising prices of a 911
www.total911.com/the-six-most-popular-porsche-911s-of-all-time/ shows it roughly as well
I only said that the 996 is the most sold generation of 911 and this many cars means more cars than people wanting to own one adding up to the 996 not being an young/old timer yet, as well.
I see them for 7k
It needed to replacement parts tho there's a few 1000
February 2020 I bought a 99’ 996 with only 84k miles for the same price!!!! 9800$ is so much car for the dollar amount, love mine so so much
Would love to know what's quicker in a straight line, this or a Seat Leon Cupra or a Golf R
There really is no substitute. ;^)
How much does it cost to maintain those? Oil change, change brakes, transmission fluid
Would you please review a 914-6? I am thinking it will out handle nearly anything on the road today.
Long gears and brake pedal effort (ie: it feels like you need a lot of pedal effort to get the damn things to stop) are 911 traits.
Euphorica long gears are a veeery Porsche thing.
Matt - whats the better car at this point 996 911 or E46 M3?
Nice Porsche !!!
for 10k its not fast!!? lol most cars under 10k barely have a 150hp lol... what a steal! walked into the Porsche club without braking the bank.
You can get fast cars under 10k hell you can get sub 5 sec cars for under 5k
Ah....memory...I used to have a 996. I was a rock solid car.
911 FOREVER!
Is this expensive to maintain? What can b expected yearly?
I've always liked these and the gen after great car when given the right care like every car I guess.
What's jenson button doing in the passenger seat??
Great car,great guy,cheers
Love it. I wanna make a move on a 996 sometime soon-ish. One gripe I have is the paint is swirled to crap!
I still love my 02, 75k miles and still like a new car in every way. The 996 is a great car...
Matt: I don’t like the brakes, I don’t like the styling, it’s not fast, it’s going to explode.
Everyone else: BS
Who does this guy think he is? His comments show he is not exactly on top of his game. Typical unfounded 996 mocking, amplified hearsay of hearsay. He mocks the brakes even if he doesn't go very fast and no way near the braking limit. Talk guy!
The one to try and which is surprisingly great among the non GT 996s is the 40th anniversary. Well underrated 345bhp engine and almost as raw and fast as a GT3 on the road ... And some have modified it as GT3 rivalling race cars. Awesome cars and really cheap.
Paint looks like it could use some /Drive Clean attention but wow hell of a deal on that car. Hope he keeps its for a long time.
Is the smoking tire just the snake videos and one take now? Cant wait to see the finished Fox Mustang. You're the best guy on Drive.
Any AMG's contact you Matt? I would love to see one and i would volunteer my own 2015 cls63 but I'm all the way up in Canada
mc hash yeah we've got a CLK55 and a C63 in the works.
TheSmokingTire HELL FKN YEA, i have a clk55 and wish i could have you drive it. Too bad I'm in nyc. Hopefully that review is up soon. Would love to see your opinion on it.
I totally agree that's why I'm
Offering my 2015 designo edition E63 type s AMG that's been modified and I'm interested in the smoking tire could test my car up in the canyons.
Have you had an RX7's come up yet, Matt? I'd love to see you tear up the canyons in one! Prefer one that isn't engine swapped, haha.
EminentLine we are doing a pair of RX7's for tuned next month: one has a boosted rotary making around 500 HP, the other has an LS3. Should be interesting.
TheSmokingTire Awesome! I'll be looking forward to it! Thanks for the reply.
TheSmokingTire Ls3 all the way... how much power is the Ls3 putting out?
TheSmokingTire
try to contact motortrend channel to give the 240ss a spin
Dacrazy-can or I could just drive over to Carlos's house and take it.
Awesome deal 👍
dear god at the swirl marks on the hood
is that a BMW M Coupe in the background at the beginning of the shoot? Love me some clown shoe!
I believe it was the modded 335i Matt drove last week, or maybe the week before. The video should be easily found on the Smoking Tire channel or even in the "Up Next" section of this video.
sereneturmoil Im talking about a :45
krodista yes, we're doing the shoe next week.
TheSmokingTire wonderful! Love the show chap!
TheSmokingTire Awesome. I've always liked the look of the clown shoe Z3 M-coupe
I love these 'real life' reviews...
omg black Porsche needs some ammo treatment. dem circles one the bonnet are crazy!
Matt, 996 Turbo or Mint E39 M5?
I LOVE Porsche but just can't get over the looks and quality of the 996. Still it seems like a great buy under 10k.
how can he say it is slow, it does 60 in 4.2 seconds, and tops out at 184 with minor upgrades
IKR.
Those numbers are a turbo. Non turbo is about 5 seconds. Still nothing to sneeze at.
I wonder if there are any MG ZS 180 in America would love to see you review 1 especially since they are so cheap in England can get a goo 1 for £750
What happened to that Datsun I saw in the background on another video? Are we going to see video of you driving that?
Mitchell McGarvey yes next week
They are not $10K anymore. Inflation, market prices, and interest ijn the car have raised prices to about $20-30K.
Give that thing some paint love
996 sound great
under 10k$ ? -.- last time I checked (one week ago) they are 15-20k € in germany -.- I'm still considering to buy one next year or so.
When are you coming to NJ? I'm putting a smaller turbo to replace my current turbo on my Subaru and i feel like you should drive it. It should make 450 ish when all is said and done. Built motor, built heads, brembos, suspension work and more.
J Lang I do one takes in LA. If I'm somewhere else, it's because I'm working, and therefore don't have time for one takes.
I really live on the wrong coast for a car lover. I'll just keep watching and hope to get my car and me out west after i complete my mse.
sweet car!
Clean 996. Dat Z/28, though!
A full-blooded porsche, with porsche feel, that makes you look and feel expensive as hell, all at a price that can reasonably be expected to end up in the parking lot of a high school - ask me how I know. I am in love.
Does anyone know what the wheels are on this 911 ?
Where was this filmed? Wanna try driving here once!
I get why... but, still.
Did you make it happen?
944 FTW!
This is the perfect car to practice stick and have some fun.
Classi 911.
Love it
I got an AMG that's 2013 e63 Biturbo modified by Weistec after having stock performance package from AMG but I know you already did a segment on the preface lift Biturbo m157 from Weistec and I'd like to see my new 2015 E63 designo type S be tested by you and I'm in SoCal in Orange County. Thanks again
Sean
Where is this road located? How can I get to drive these roads
Mason McGavock It's Mulholland highway in Malibu.
This is like Comedians in Cars getting coffee just less funny.
Man I wish had I can find used Porsche for that price hopefully someday =)
TheSmokingTire Matt is there a release schedule for these videos? I'm really enjoying them but I'm constantly checking CZcams for an upload and I hate the disappointment when there is not anything new.
Christopher Garcia most of the time one takes go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This one went up on a friday because I'm in Dubai working on /DRIVE, and with the very long work days combined with the time change, I just couldn't get it done.
9600!? That's awesome! I couldn't find a 911 below 20k in my area!
sgfreak96 I know.
