- Now that at least some versions of the 2005-2011 Porsche 911, aka the 997, are available on the used market for somewhat reasonable amounts of money, we feel obligated to drive as many of them as possible. This 2006 Carrera S is clean and completely stock.

Watching this video in 2022 and the 997 still looks amazing.
And they are worth more now than 6 years ago when this was filmed.
@@dissaverone’s worth getting are 50k and even over 60k depending on options. Not even talking 997.2 unfortunately.
@@Nelbonepaid $53k for this exact spec car in May 2023
@@charleskrasucki2321 thank you for confirming my statement
same in 2024.
I've probably watched this about ten times now, over the past few years. I finally got myself a 997 Carrera 2S a couple of months back and I am loving it no end! It's a 2008 46k mile clean example with some nice options such as sports exhaust, short shifter and extended leather, sold the Golf GTI so it's our only car and so far so damn good! The gf was concerned as she's not the most confident driver but it's so easy to drive and visibility is excellent. I did have the PCM swapped out to a Pioneer unit to include mod cons such DAB/satnav/Bluetooth plus a reversing camera, which has modernised it. No one believes it's twelve years old.
I would highly recommend it to anyone sitting on the fence, now is the time to get one!
Thanks for this post. I’m actually shopping for one as we speak. I live in Fort Lauderdale FL so there’s a pretty good used selection
Hey i have a GTI right now as well and my dream is to get a 911 haha. How much did you pay for your 997?
@@domain300 £29k for a good condition, lowish mileage (45k miles) example. Still loving it 12k miles later! If I were to get a second car I would strongly consider the Golf R.
I also recently got a manual transmission 997.1 C2S with 14,000 miles and will be selling my 2017 Mark 7 GTI with 18,000 miles. Prices on these 997s have skyrocketed- $70 K for mine.
@@ronn878 Nice one, congrats! Everything is inflated right now, I imagine you got more for your GTI too. Either way I doubt you'll regret it and the 911 (especially yours having low miles) will likely keep appreciating. Enjoy it, don't be afraid to put miles on it (mines now on nearly 64k miles)!
Porsche owner seems like a genuine person
He REALLY does.
I worked at a European shop that's serviced and modified everything German and Italian. The Porsche owners were the easiest friendliest and genuine normal people I had to deal with.. didn't matter man woman doctor or construction worker..they all were very good people.
Would you bang him though?
this dude has a great podcast voice.
Prodriver33 who even listens to podcasts anymore
Hahaha I really should get a podcast.
Not even just that, but he's also pretty smart and well spoken, great guest!
you dont listen to the TST podcasts? YOu should, bro
Tomáš T. I'm one of those lame asses that has listened to every single one more than once lol. hooniverse too.
When a car doesn't have a turbo I'm naturally exasperated.
Wot? So you hate 911 GT3s?
@VirusTornado It's a joke :)
Mzn T "naturally exasperated" sounds like naturally aspirated. I get it now. I haven't slept well last night, first day of the week and all. lol.
VirusTornado
No worries, mate!
Oh yeah. Im lucky enough to have a 997 turbo and a Cayman GT4. The former is faster. The latter is better
That initial take off was impressive.
John Smith agree it almost looked like it was playing on a faster speed.
One takes are always better with some good conversation like this one.
The 997 is my absolute dream car. Fucking beautiful too.
This is the greatest road I've seen on a one-take. By far.
I love my 997.1 C2S with manual transmision in silver colour like the review.
It still has that analog driving sensation, which has been lost in the most modern models. The 991 and 992 are cars, bigger comfortable as a gt. The 997 still retain the essence of the classic 911.
Long life to legendary sports car.
7250 red line stock. Had a 2006 997S. Loved every minute. Mine had a GT3 shifter, full suspension, full exhaust and a few other things.
What did you upgrade to? (or downgrade....)
Phoenix Rising nsx in his picture maybe
can the tiptronic trans be tuned to a higher shift point? im coming from a ZF8 which was pretty adjustable

Checking in from 2022 and these 997.1 C2S cars have sky rocketed in value, $70k for low mile examples and $50-60k for mid mileage ones. 6 speeds add about a 10% premium. I’ve seen 100k+ mileage ones sell form $35-45k for a manual example.
Update November 22: market has cooled considerably and continues to do so. Slash those prices by around $5-10k depending on condition and mileage.
Love my 06 997S...one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Manual trans rocks!
I bought a 997.1 C4 today, my first Porsche. Love it already. Now I’m binging all the 997 videos.
"i bought it in january, it's my daily, i've done 1600 miles in it" how far away is your job, 2 miles? damn.
Nick Nack thought he said he picked it up in july :/
Even though he said July, you're still probably right. An hour on the 10 is about a half mile.
Nick Nack the drive from my office to my house is 20 minutes. It's 3.8 miles.
TheSmokingTire Must be nice diva
TheSmokingTire lucky sod. get an electric bike with all the beautiful weather you have would be so relaxing. my 25 mile bike ride in 3C is still pretty enjoyable.
997 is my favourite generation Porsche.
The perfect 997 package ... best looking 997 for me
GTS Manual ;)
Future classic
Yes.
a super clean, very low mileage 2006 997 that has been taken care of well instead of abused is a fantastic buy , you couldn't find better use for that kind of price,,,, awesome find....
The Man's voice is like velvet!
Was just going to say. I hope this guy works in radio. If not, he needs to. Or do voiceover work.
Nice solid 911 for the money. Good choice.
Totally a classic. Love those rims and that silver is perfect.
It would be awesome to see a Lexus ISF one take, these cars are a steal in the used car market now. Something unique and different from your common run of the mill M3 or C63.
He did a Lexus IS-F one take
SHHHHH!
Can't go wrong with a 911
Reliability, access to parts, able to work on it without spending 5k in labor, etc. Seems pretty simple to me.
I use to know a Porsche tech. He said they were really easy to work on...you just have to drop the engine for almost everything, after you drop the engine out it's all easy.
hopefully dropping out the engine is "easy" then?
there 6 bolts.. .two to connect stuff mounted to the engine and 4 that holds the engine to the car.. Obviously you need to disconnect the gearbox which is 6 bolts so in total 12 bolts that easily come off.
pokiou cool. 12 bolts. Does this mean that a lay person can do this? Or if done by a shop, is this an easy task which means low labour cost to drop the engine to do basic maintenance. I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect in terms of cost.
the exact porsche i hope to own in a few years
Man Like B How about now?
#metoo
Keith I bought one for 25k same everything but with sportcrono first week of 2019. It had borescoring bad. I did the 4 litre upgrate from L&N Engineering. It already had the IMS fix from them. I would highly recommend anyone to go that route. I Abselutly love that car.
Excellent video. Cheers.
It really does
I know right!!
ever drink baileys from a shoe?
If by baileys you mean tinia-infused foot sweat I'll come clean and say yes......why?
Phoenix Rising would you like to see my water colors?
Quite possibly....
Sounds great, these NA 997s have a nice soundtrack. I still think a convertible 997 S is the best fun/performance/practicality/value car ever made.
4 seats, no boot space comprises from roof unlike others, big front boot/trunk, fast, solid, reliable, and so affordable now. For a young person with one car for everything, it's pretty perfect.
Now that's a road that I like!
Angeles Crest and Mount Wilson Road, north of Pasadena :D
One of my all-time-favorites. I definitley see myself owning one of these in the future, once I finished studying.
This was a great One Take been looking at these couldnt have come at a better time
Drew! Congrats on your first Porsche 911 and One take review! What an upgrade from the "toilet van", haha! Great choice with the 2006 997 CS. 2006-2008 Had the final updated versions of the IMS bearing and very rare to see them fail . So Drive it like you stole it and enjoy!
Thanks so much! Oh I definitely do already, it's a fantastic car.
@@drewpelletier2917 still got it? Miles? Issues?
I'm impressed with the fact you can obviously have a good blast on those beautiful roads and not have cops jumping out from behind trees like here down under.
Congrats on a nice, unmodified 997. The refinement & character is perfect. Our 987.2 manual with LSD, sport seats & a few convenience options displaced a 450 RWHP turbo S2000 track toy on Motons, 285/295s etc. - zero regrets. Have fun & enjoy the ride.
Makes me sick hearing them talk about how affordable and plentiful these were in 2016 😂🤦🏼 man I wish I could have fast forwarded my finances a few years!
Great one take matt, loved the first road (the technical one) looks like a great, fun road with a nice view. Keep it up!
One of the best 911s ever. Future classic. Not really a fan at all, but totally respect anyone who chooses to drive one of these.
...OK Matt, you have driven just about every Porsche going now. Complete the list once and for all, and drive a 930 Slantnose a-la Condor Man [best bad guy car ever]. After that, I think you can take a rest from Porsche's, they all are essentially the same. Have been since the 60s. Unless there is one with crazy mods out there if course.
Loved the vid, and good on the guy for waiting and buying his dream car. Rare anyone gets to do that, I did, and it is the best feeling in the world.
ChaosphereIX they are far from the same
Dalton Villnave I know that, but it seems like they are...
I would love to see a 356 Coupe go through the canyons. Wouldn't be terribly fast, but super light and nimble.
I need to stop watching 911 one takes, so envious. Lovely car.
They are not that expensive mate.
gmansplit 38k is not bad for a Porsche but is still a lot of money for most people for a car.
gmansplit, I'm guessing they are more than the average yearly wage in the USA as well as most other places which is a lot of money for most people
Well think about it...if $38k (+ associated maintenance on a $65k+ sports car) is considered a "lot" then this is not the right car for the budget. No elitism here, just stating logical decision making.
I was basically saying, you're a lucky guy, it's a great car and those canyon roads are heaven.
Great car, Drew seems cool, and good review as always Matt.
love the auto uploads. like clockwork 4 am
Gawdamn...what a stellar score of a find. I'd jump on one too if I could find a an unmolested stock 997 S with low mileage for such a great price.
He sounds like he would be a professional car reviewer.
imo this is the best-looking porsche coming and going since the 930 widebodys. I really loved the 993 too, but when i saw the first commercials for this and the test-drives for the 997 GT3; i knew i had found my german motoring dream. Now if only i had the money to drop on a well-cared-for S in that deep metallic silver(darker shade than drew's here) with the chocolate brown leather I'd be in heaven!
Is this guy a radio show host? lol
6:46 "SUPER SPORTS BRO" "GT3 shifter bro" Give the guy a break. "They're not cheap but... they're what's on all my cars." The whole video is like "This car isn't all that bad for just an S", when you're talking about a Porsche 911. This is a benchmark car. I was almost surprised you didn't ask if he couldn't afford the GT3.
Matt has the best job in the world, he basically kicks the shit out of nice cars for a living ---Matt you are living the dream
My bro has had an 06 997 C2S for ten years and loves it. Said he will never give it up.
i freaking hate it when people change the rear lights into those aftermarket led ones
where you see that?
Herp Derp I think you're talking about the facelift.
Some people who have 997.1's feel for whatever reason that they're inferior to 997.2 so they install aftermarket lookalikes. I think both look stellar.
"fuck everyone that has different taste than me"
LED taillights just look better. I changed the ones of my 997.1 too. They just look much better (the ones from the 997.1 look outdated) and thes cost 500 €. That‘s nothing.
Great road!! More from there please.
It kills me that these have IMS... to avoid the loss of sleep I'm on the hunt for 09+ but the price jump is bananas and makes the 997.1 VERY appealing
Honestly IMS isn't that big of a deal breaker. You either look for one that has that issue sorted, or fix it yourself. It's definitely not as common as you think, and most IMS affected cars were affected early on in their life (i.e. before 20-30k miles).
Very true. I fell into the rabbit hole a while back and then you start to see that even the ceramic LN engineering bearings can fail if they don't have a pressurized oiling system. Granted the rate of failure is super low so it starts to become a conspiracy theory lol
Tedward LOL. Have you considered a newer Cayman S? No IMS issues and still drives brilliant.
Every day. I think I enjoy the dynamics of a cayman even more than a 911.. Once I'm cured of "But its not a 911 Syndrome" I will probably pull the trigger and add a mid engine car to the fleet. a 2009+ 987 S would be perfect. Plus money left over for a crazy exhaust
Tedward Honestly? Test drive a Cayman S with Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE). You might not need to get a crazy exhaust.
this is a good episode. it REALLY is.
He's so right. Michelin Pilot Supersports are fantastic tires. I put them on my Audi and loved em
Unreal road, loved it!
It is a beut. Just the right amount of luxury and sport. Congrats on your Porsche.
I got my 997 in June. It has been everything I expected and more. Mine is an '05 model, 62K miles. Not my daily, my Lexus GX460 is my daily. But, for a night on the town, this is amazing
Shifter. Lowered down about 1". Rims and a good alignment would make it a great ride and drive track day car. Thanks for the video Matt.
endless love for supersports. I had p zero before super sports and theyre so much quieter, more gripy, etc etc. such wonderful tires.
"a little bit" I couldn't stop hearing it :D
You literally manifested that shit for me. As soon as I read this comment .....
Aw yes. I was hungry for more Matt Farah action. Such a clean and basic 997 S. Hopefully you can do a review or a one take on an NSX.
That's a great new road, you should definitely run it more in future one takes.
You got a great taste in cars there, Red:). Can't wait to buy my first Porsche, it will be a 997.2. 4S, preferably in brown or green....
997 is a great gen of 911 and many prefer the gen 1.
For about $900 Pioneer offers an Apple CarPlay unit. LED tail lights and DRLs update the gen 1 looks nicely as well.
NICE, looks like you took out the vette Matt! hope you had a good time out there with it!
Very very cool, thanks for trying a 997 Carrera S gen1, glad you enjoyed it - this is valuable information since you get to drive so many cars.
The GT3 shifting mechanism does fit the 997gen1 and Porsche does a short shift kit for this model which ends up being even shorter than the GT3's.
And definitely a new set of Michelins whether it's pilot sports 2 or super sports + geo adjustment, that will make a world of difference.
Great car, good owner - nice video: twas a tasty route to boot.
I love 997s. I own 2007 Carrera 4 modified by Deman Motorsport 3.8L upgrade. After I bought this car 11years ago, i don't have any big problem so far. I think 997 is still in good condition!
Awesome review!
"Its got Hancucks..." "Nah, Super Sports Bro"
I need one. The only change I will add it’s a ducktail spoiler like the one in the Classic exclusive 997
Love this car ! The exhaust is stock ? It sounds loud
Erick Maynard exactly what I 'm thinking... It' s the right sound
12:03 The perfect definition of Porsche.
this is a beautiful car
Really enjoyed this!!!
Love Mt. Wilson and love the 997. I've driven an '09 997 and if i didn't have my '02 NSX I'd for sure need to have a 997.
Mt. Wilson is the BEST. So technical. It is dirty though.
I hope I will drive a 911 one day. :(
Tomáš Truněček don’t hope, instead say you WILL drive one in the future
Yeah. Cross out the „I hope“ and turn that sad emoji into a smile.
You totally will have a 911 one day.
GT3 “shifter” is a PDK automatic, and you would prefer that? - the manual is the dream! I guess that is why the 991 911R is selling for twice retail, with a 6-speed manual, and a 2016 991.1 911 GT3 RS (new with few miles) just sold at Golding Amelia 2018 for just over $190k, with that “amazing” 7-speed PDK... If the Carrera S in this video didn’t have a sunroof, it would be perfect!
very nice car. i like the styling of this gen 911. cool car.
Hey Matt I've always wondered what does it mean when you say something "comes on cam nice"?
Matt, how much do you start regret doing the fox body when driving a 911 or any other car for the same money? haha
Tomáš T. I kinda dig the lobster claws
Tomáš T. Not "any other car," but when I do math and think about the Ferrari 458 I could have had by spending less than the Mustang, it makes me depressed.
TheSmokingTire Good old money pit projects. Gotta love it
TheSmokingTire hell a 997 Turbo would be enough.
Abe Froman Enough doesnt make much sense to me in the car world. Too subjective. For some people, a miata is 'enough' but for some people, a 675LT isnt 'enough'. Hence the P1. What does enough mean?
I want one of these as well
It's time to add a 997 to my collection
finally my Mt. Wilson request was answered! crazy fast up that.
High 30s low 40s for a low mileage 997 cs is unheard of now
Will the GT3 shifter fit a 996 as well?
Ah the San Gabriel Mountains and a Porsche, nice!
I used to have a 996, my mechanic at Porsche Center told me not to change the IMS because it would've caused problem already and it is much more likely to be a problem in the future if I go with aftermarket IMS.
Love driving that thing.
Beautiful!
What a great video!!!
that road was awesome
SmokingTire/Matt, I noticed this 997 did not have Sport Chrono. Did the car feel any different without it? Especially, in a canyon road scenario like the one you drove in?
No love for the RS3s Matt?
I love the grip of those tires (once warm)!
In the beginning, of the car intro shot it looks like the steering wheel is slightly bent towards the driver. Is this just an illusion from the camera or is there a slight bend to it?
Diggin that jacket mann
...the sound when the throttle is blipped for a gear change... OMG ;-)
Nearly bought one of these puppy’s,but went for the mk2 TTs in the end.AWD and slightly faster 0-60mph.
Great looking porsche 997, I am in the market for a use one. The only difference would be picking up a s4 because the all wheel drive. I feel it balance the vehicle by adding some weight in the front.
Matt! Still waiting on the part 2 of your manual driving vids! - Long time TST viewer =)
Late to the party but I recently drove a nice 05 C2S with 73kms and nearly bought it. Really a great all around car. I have driven a 997 GT3 as well. In the end I couldn't do it for fear of IMS and bore scoring. A motor failure would hurt too much and I am the type to worry.
Is the GT3 worth 40k more? I'm deciding between buying a 997 C2S for 60k, or a 997 GT3 for 100k.
@@mariodiniz21 997 gt3 has gone way up some I was shopping 997 C2S. Now I am not sure it's worth the extra cost. In Canada a 997 GT3 is close to triple the cost of a C2S.
very cool car.....what are they going for these days?
This guy has been in radio or is in the radio business now.
Hmmm let me guess. Youre drawing that from the way he speaks?
Bingo. Heheh. When noone has to look at that shit then why the hell not eh?
Next career option maybe?
Phoenix Rising its his voice. You could look like a troll, but if you have a good voice you can do radio, voice acting etc. I've always been interested in that, because of my awful look and raspy deep voice
