The Collector Car Guru Sam returns to the driver's seat of a 996 after two decades ago to destroy beliefs the 996 is anything other than pure awesomeness and show the days of being worth half of an air-cooled 993 911 are certainly going to end soon!

Yes here in Australia. Picked mine up 6 years ago for $36K and immediately did IMS replace. Money well spent.
Use it on long trips to Sydney and out to the bush. Love every minute of it. Such a joy to drive. I’m 80 and it takes years of my life.

In 2015 I was looking for a air cooled 911 but came across a 1999 996 a few towns over from a private seller and picked it up fo $11k. This car has the less problematic dual row IMS bearing but was at the height of the IMS panic so this is why I got for that price. 70's - 80's air cooled 911's were selling in the $30k range so I thought I scratched my itch for a 911 however while the 996 is a great 911 I wish I would have not settled and bought the air cooled model I originally wanted.

While the 993 and 996 drive similarly and have a common feel, trying to compare an 80's G to a 996 is like comparing filet mignon to Copper River salmon. We always consult with our customers to really be in tune with the motivating factors and align them with the realities (good, bad and ugly) of the available options. Even if everyone else loves Copper River salmon, if you really want steak and you're in a great steakhouse, getting the filet mignon is the right call for you! Same goes with choosing Porsches.
