Loved your review, my only downside to owning my 2002 911 Carrera cabriolet black, on black w/whale tail & flared rear fenders, on a yellow suede & black leather interior w/6spd Manual, is the insults, the birds I get at traffic signals, happens too often in Arizona.
Road rage seems to be no crime here. DO NOT DRIVE WITH TOP DOWN !

after I made a deposit on 996.1 I came across MB SL55 in perfect condition at friends dealership, should I buy instead?? “No, it’s still not a 911” he replied. 8 yrs later, I’ve confirmed wisdom of that

The 996 is a fab car, but it is still a Porsche and maintaining it is commensurately high. It is still an upper middle class toy notwithstanding its comparatively lower price of entry.

4s is 2 wheel rear wheel drive UNTIL the PSM kicks in when you get yourself into trouble!

Its not underated and its not a gem. It is a fatally flawed car in design and execution.

It's not a perfect car for sure. Some of its flaws you can work with, some not so much. The IMS is easily sorted even if not cheaply. Other things such as not having a glovebox, or the foolish electronic frunk release are annoying, but you adapt pretty quickly. Sort the IMS & RMS, get a sprint booster and you're good to go.

@@juryca Not correct. All 996.1 were made without a glovebox. The earliest year was 1998/99 and they didn't get gloveboxes until 2002. My 2001 has no glovebox.
