575 HP Porsche 996 Turbo X50 - (One Take)

  • The Porsche 996 has sustained a long reputation for reliable speed, and with the recent spike in 80's Porsche Turbo's, it now has a new reputation: the cheapest Porsche Turbo you can buy. Nyx bought this one in San Diego the day before the shoot with plans to drive it all the way home to Virginia, but she decided to swing through LA to let me have a spin first!

    Jesus you people are awful. This is a fair warning to keep discussion on topic about cars. Anyone who says some shit about Nyx that I find to be bigoted in nature will be quietly banned from commenting here. If you're a dick in these comments, it will be the last comment on a TST video you ever make, end of discussion.

    Hey everyone, thanks for checking out the video and thanks to Matt for having me on his channel!
    I left the shoot that morning and drove straight to Tucson--->Dallas------->Richmond, all in less than 3 days. It was a lot of driving, but pretty comfortable. On the trip back the car was great, no drama/tickets.
    Those wheels make the car look insanely good I think, they are the proper size and perfect offsets for a 19" wheel on that car. It's just slightly too low, but easy fix. My other cars are: 1999 m3(dakar yellow) 2008 135i 2008 m3(e90) 2003 Land Rover Disco 2014 BMW s1000rr

    Guys... this is Nyx. I wanted to update you on this car. I had it for awhile and did quite a few things to it, full paint correction, headlight restoration, hood and front bumper respray, ppf on the front, lots of maintenance. A friend near me bought the car and has done a lot to it. Engine out service to address gaskets, vacuum lines, pinning the coolant pipes, techart bilstein coilovers, retune, and several other mods including an even better exhaust, 4s michelins, intake, etc etc. I believe the car is over 600hp now. I drove it the other day and it was hitting 150mph easily ad traction was cutting in all the time. it has ~85K miles and is just getting broken in.

      The lights look like hell from the Amber. You can either deamber, get the newer lights, or go for litronics. Just don't get one with base Amber lights. Also the interior is great if optioned well.

      Sarah Dell Same here, haha. Immediately after watching this video I went on mobile.de to search for 996's, and found out that early 997's are often cheaper. I thought 996's were pretty cheap...

    • @nolanohana
      @nolanohana Před 8 lety +1

      +Tomáš T. Early 997 cars share the same engine as the 996, which has been criticized because of the IMSB issue, look at 2006 and beyond :)

    • @leloodallasmultipass
      @leloodallasmultipass Před 8 lety +1

      +Tomáš T. it's a little unfair because the turbo and post 2002 996s had a better headlight design. The turbos had a better fender/bumper with which to accent the newer headlights, as well. So, they look fine. not as good as the 997, but they'll do.

  • @rodanone4895
    @rodanone4895 Před 8 lety +40

    I couldn't agree more with every comment made. I also own a 2003, 996 Turbo. Essentially the same without the X50. So only about 500HP... And 500 LB-FT... only!
    The Mezger engine is GLORIOUS. And I've reached rev limit on more occasions than I care to mention. I have no issues with the car and I'm still able to get 1.3 bar on the turbos.
    The interior is something that we as 996 owners can argue with others over. I agree with Nyx. The heat that Porsche took was unfairly leveled. You cannot look me in the eye and tell me the 993, 964, or original 911/901 had a better interior because they were only beginning to have an interior at all by the 993. And the 997 was fairly unimaginative. It was simply to appease the 993 owners that were complaining that they didn't get round headlights and the interior was different. This is a common problem with long time Porsche owners. And I somewhat feel this way about the even newer cars. Though a 2007+ Turbo with a stick is also terribly compelling. But is it 2x in cost compelling... I don't think so.
    I could really give or take the 991 interior as well. I'm buying a sports car. Not a luxury GT. The wear on my 996s and Boxster has been much better than any other car that I have owned. The biggest aesthetic issue involves the full leather wrapped dash. Cover the dash in the sun. Repeated thermal/solar cycles will wrinkle the leather causing it to pull away from the speaker ports. It sucks pretty much.
    The 996 in many ways was the last of the more pure sporting 911 (Though the push towards GT car had begun). There was no Cayman in the lineup at that point. The 911 still had to fulfill that mission as well.
    My girlfriend got a 2001, 996 C4 after driving mine the first time. And before that she really didn't care what she was driving. Now she prefers her older 996 to her 2011 335i.
    Porsche is primarily selling to the MB crowd of late I think... Hence the lack of clamor for a manual. I'll give the PDK its heritage and dues... But it's just not for me.
    I also went through many BMWs before I got here. My 986 Boxster S changed my perceptions about what defined a car much more than pure power. The 996 turbo says... I will be great in all the same ways... But here, have some POWER!
    I also have a 996 C2 from 2003. The M96 isn't a terrible engine. You just need to take some precautions. I've put many, extremely hard miles on the 996/986 family of cars. I've been lucky so far. They've taken great care of me and put a smile on my face every time I start one up.
    You're going to love this car more and more and more. And the rest of the world won't understand. They'll just try to race you...

    • @rodanone4895
      @rodanone4895 Před 8 lety +3

      +Todd Felege One more thing... When one of the cooling tubes eventually pops out... Just pull the engine and have them welded in. That is actually the only flaw that I aware of with the Mezger engine. All Turbo, GT-2, GT-3 motors through 997 can suffer this issue.
      Let me just say it sucks when one pops out during operation. And since they are inserted with epoxy it's really more a question of when. My friend with a 2004 GT-3 went through the same incident.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Před 8 lety +5

      +Todd Felege We raced against a 996 GT3 in the 2013 One Lap of America race, and at hallet motorsports park that coolant tube came off, and the driver didn't realize for a full lap; ignoring the flags and everything. The whole track had to be shut down for hours.

    Hi Matt and Hi Nyx, very nice car and loved the video.
    Just a clarification about the Type 1 over rev, 33 000 you need to divide it by 3 to obtain the number of engine revolution and then divide it again by the rev limiter.
    Might not be exact but as an example, 33 000/3 = 11 000/6750 = 1.62 min (or 98 sec). So the car spent a total of 98 sec at rev limiter.

    Great find and nice choice Nyx! Thank you for sharing your car with us. Thanks Matt for putting Nyx on the schedule last minute and reviewing the 996 Turbo. Nicely rounds off your 1 take car library ;^) Although I used to be in to turbo cars, I am more of a naturally aspirated kind of guy these days, but I have always admired and respected Turbo Porsches. They have Great engines, Insane Power and torque, and Porsche build quality. The 996 Turbo X50 was about $160,000 + brand new and at its current pricing still looks nice and is a great bargain! The Mezger designed engine has no IMS issues and was taken from the design of the GT1 racing engine which means that it is virtually bullet proof. X50s do have a bit more lag around town compared to non-X50, but still an amazing package. Nice to see that Nyx is very car smart. That is a lot of power and car to handle so I highly recommend a few track days with a 911 Porsche instructor! Hope this car brings you lots of joy and Congrats on achieving your Porsche Dream!!

Okay you tough asses on the internet, where's your Porsche 996? Oh that's right, you don't have one because you spend all day talking shit on the internet, too lazy to get a job and acquire a car as such.
    Anyways, about the video: I've seen a few 996's at local meets and I don't think I've seen a cleaner example than this one. Definitely have a new respect for the 996 after seeing Nyx's one. In regards to over-rev: Ranges 1-3 can be achieved by bumping into the rev limiter (more likely if a car is driven in Sport Chrono Sport Mode). Ignition cycles here are no cause for concern. Range 4-5 This ranges (and beyond) can only be achieved by a miss-downshift and these speeds are pushing the range of physical damage. Carefully inspect the number of ignition cycles that have been recorded in this area.

    This was very cool, she shared a special moment with Matt... I bought a Porsche 2006 Cayman S this summer and it is the neatest thing, it's tight, it's got power, and the previous owners took really good care of it, like it's new. In this video, he hits the gas and they both smile, and I experience that every time I take someone for a ride... It takes a while to figure the car out and at each step of the way, your amazed... I wasn't disappointed (and that was one of my fears) and I don't think she is or Matt is in the least.... A 996 Turbo has to be quite the car... Thank you for sharing with us and good luck with it.

    New rule: Nyx needs to be in more One-Take-Videos. Because I really would like to see the BMW's she was talking about from a person who obviously knows what she's talking about. Also she had 16 Beemers in a row? I think someone is definetely qualified to talk about BMW, right?
    +TheSmokingTire , Matt aren't you planning to do One-Takes in Virginia anyway??
    Oh and this Porsche is awesome. I'm starting to respect 996 owners more and more because 996's are not that prestigous but they are still awesome cars to drive. Which means these are (maybe the only) Porsches that are actually being driven by enthusiasts who won't give a fuck about image, prestige and showing off but apreciate the 996's for what they really are: Fantastic sports-cars!!
