Losing Annette marks the end of an era. The original Mouseketeers were probably the last group of unspoiled showbiz kids who were just plain wholesome, with no creepy reactionary cultish vibe. The '80s-90s incarnation was already full of mini-pop-divas-in-training. Never got that sense of calculated commercialism from the original group--even in restrospect, their corny innocence is still endearing. We boomers wanted to be Mouseketeers in the '50s--did Gen Y kids feel the same? Doubt it.
Jimmie Dodd died way to young (in his mid 50's from cancer). He was such a kind-hearted, beloved man who left us way before his time. If there's a Rock and Roll Heaven, Jimmie Dodd is the head songwriter.
Seeing these MMC clips bring back fond childhood memories for me. Sad to know a few of the original mouseketeers are no longer with us, especially Cheryl who I also had a young boyhood crush on. No doubt like many other little boys who watched the show back then. She was 6 years older than me, but I loved to see her smiling face each day after school.
thank you for posting this; i lived thru this era and saw every show/rerun they had plus SPIN/MARTY AND ANNETTE. it was a good time growing up where the innocense was there. RIP JIMMY, ANNETTE, AND CHERYL. loved them all. i get to watch BOBBY BURGESS every saturday night on lawrence welk and he has talked about his walt disney days and updated us on annette's health status during fundraising PTV weeks. bettyg, iowa fan forever and loved this song ;)
I used to watch The Mickey Mouse Club on Vault Disney as a baby in the early 00's . Annette's death really shocks me. R.I.P. Annette. And thanks for all the memories.
Walt Disney was a disgusting human being.... I guess he's coated in nostalgia in your mind but there's nefarious motives behind everything he did. The amount of molestation victims who were involved with Walt Disneys productions. Its not a coincidence. Reality isn't what meets the eye. The casting couch applies to children as well. And the " mickey mouse club " moonlighted in grooming children for pedophilles. Whether thats directly or indirectly who knows, but we do know Walt Disney isn't the man he was portrayed to be. You should be " having the feels " for 1/4 of the children featured in this video because they're were probably victims.
@@kairussell7372 Yeah, I heard there was a lot of paedophilia associated with the Mickey Mouse club. It was tolerated in those days. Also Walt Disney was a racist.
Originally, Jimmie would say, "And now, Mouseketeers, here's one thing we want you always to remember...", and there'd be a little musical fanfare before they started singing...
What a trip down Memory Lane! As a teen I wanted to be a Mouseketeer more than anything in life! I even took tap dancing lessons. Never got around to auditioning. But I so loved this show!
As Mouseketeer Sharon Baird remembered, “Jimmie was one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever known in my life. He was genuine and he didn’t speak down to kids, he included them. He was a great person to look up to.”
I sure wish that they would re-release ALL of the old Mckey Mouse Club shows. In order. AS well of the Disney World shows. There is so much from the Disney studios that have not been seen in 20 + years. The children of today are DEPRIVED!!!!
OK,I know I will sound real old here but you can just see the innocence in these kids faces.I am only 39 and I am no religious type but I really wish kids these days could be as pure as these kids.I remember watching re-runs of this show when I was a kid on WTTV 4 in Indiana.Sharon was definitely my favorite.
As TV further devolves into chaos... One day, people will look back on the stuff from the 2000's and say, "Man, remember when TV was so simple?", like we are doing on this vid.
I had a big crush too. Remember she also played as Mary Ellen Rogers on Leave it to Beaver as well. And now even the youngest of those little kids are in their mid 60's. What happened?
The thing I think about the Mickey Mouse Club was that they cast children who were dancers that could sing. Most of the emphasis was on the dance numbers. But the singing was nothing all that special, such as here. there's no harmonization. Sounds like a school chorus.
Really interesting comment. I'm a midwestern boomer too. The original MMC was certainly wholesome and even looking back at it from a perspective of over 50 years,it doesn't come across as crass or commercial in any way. If anything, MMC seems like very old fashioned entertainment adopted to TV in the best ways: good dancing and fun songs with very nice ppl--I'm really impressed with Jimmy even 50 years later. And unlike many, I liked Cheryl and Karen best, not Annette.
You got it right..pure as these kids and then we can send 'em to Afghanistan, Iraq..anywhere to make 'em real Americans..as god intended! God bless Mister Disney and his wholesome intentions!
I thought Dennis was cute!! He was my favorite of the boys. Sharon is a real cutie in this clip!! But there was something about Darlene that just didn't sit right with me....I can't put my finger on it but there was something about her I didn't like. Karen and Cubby of course were adorable!
I thought it was a bit strange to have Jimmy and Roy as Mousketeers was strange but don't forget that back then paedophilia was tolerated, even encouraged in some circles.
Not as pretty and melodic as the first season, and the tempo is painfully slow. Were they padding with stock elements of the show to require less original footage in season 2? Perhaps. But you have to admit that, if you're a baby boomer, this still kind of gets to you. And of course, seeing Annette as we first fell in love with her, is just heartbreaking. Thanks, Jimmy. Thanks, Uncle Walt. You made our childhoods happier.

It ran from 1955 to 1959
It was cancelled due to unknown reasons
What a goodbye song!

The Mouseketeer countdown was to see who hit puberty over the summer.
Amazing how many times Doreen's hairstyle and hair length changed throughout the singing of this song.
