  • The Epiphone, Inspired by Gibson, Hummingbird. A complete work of art folks. As promised in the video, Hayes Tech did a review on the J200 version of the IBG and you can find a link to that video below:
    • Epiphone J-200 Inspire...
    I am adding some info that I found out from another comment on a review I saw recently. You may find it as interesting as I did. This made me smile, so here's the brief conversation:
    Bruce Sistrunk
    2 months ago
    It actually is more or less a bench made, it’s a master built so that means it’s hand built start to finish by one luthier, a lot of folks don’t know that though.
    Steve Bernard
    2 months ago
    how did you learn it was by one luthier?
    Bruce Sistrunk
    2 months ago
    @Steve Bernard I had spoken to some individuals that had ties with Epiphone directly and they told me all about it with it being in the old Sammick factory and how they had set up the sammick location for the masterbilt process and high quality acoustic work cuz we were comparing a Gibson hummingbird to the new masterbilt hummingbird and how they were basically the same minus the fretboard and bridge wood and the type of lacquer being different but still a lacquer none the less, we measured them sonically and they we’re basically identical and then acoustically they were the same other than the minor variances you see from like one Gibson hummingbird to another Gibson hummingbird being that no matter if it’s from one Gibson to another they still would each one not sound exactly like the other but still in the same range sonically with subtle differences.
    Update: These IBGs, as of 2023, are now being manufactured in China. Buyer beware. My recommendation is to find a used one with the factory code 23, which is the old Samick factory in Indonesia.

    Very nice review Randy. You hit every topic and I got a very good sound sample out of it. I don't understand why Gibson would let Epiphone build these, because I think they are as good, if not better than the original. We love our (Inspired By Gibson) Epiphone J200 and will be getting more from Epiphone. I want the Exellente so bad I can taste it...lol...

      I play his J200 every chance I can get. The thing that really stands out is it looks as good as it sounds. The solid maple back and sides are even quilted, with very highly figured wood. It's amazing how they can make that guitar at that price.

      Exactly... I'm telling you, these all solid wood guitars that Epiphone are putting out now are phenomenal. Our "Inspired by Gibson" Epiphone J-200, and our "Master Built" Zenith, arch top, are excellent examples of what they are doing. I love what Epiphone is doing.

    I bought my Humming bird inspired by gibson back in August2023 .I changed the strings and dicovered the sadle was a loose fit and fell out with the strings removed, so I replaced the sadle. There was also a small fkaw with the paint job on the top when they applied the cherry paint. It also has a buzz on the second string when frettef on the 1st and 2nd fret, It has a beautyful sound, I am surprised the paint job was not picked up during final inspection.

      Hi Dave, do you happen to know if yours is a code 23, or 15? It was around that time that the factory moved to China. Appreciate you sharing your experience here.

      Just seen yr update on the factory code and mine is code 15 which is made in china and that makes sense for the two flaws that passed inspection. I am disappointed and am considering contacting the store where I purchased it in August.@@randysrhythm

      Question Randy. I see your Epi HB has what appear to be ebony pins. Did you change them for look, or do you find they make a difference in tone? I have heard that ebony smooths out and tame down the tone. Just curious. I have some ebony pins, and also some white Ivoroid pins from stewmac. Not sure what I'll use in mine yet. Thanks Randy. Love your opinions!

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Před rokem +1

      @@guitarlight3935 Well sir, I am not sure it really makes a huge difference, but I hate plastic on guitars. That said, I only own one guitar without a spec of plastic on it, but I specified everything on that guitar. It is a custom built, 12th Root Guitar. It wasn’t cheap 😁, but worth every penny. There you have it. It likely does make a small difference. In my opinion, the nut, saddle and bridge pins should be bone, or ebony. It just seems more fluid to me. I think it simply boils down to preference. When I can afford it, I’ll always chose quality over quantity.
      I really appreciate the questions and the feedback. This is the very reason I decided to create a channel 👍🏻.

  • @WithCarePlz
    @WithCarePlz Před rokem +1

    I appreciate your review.
    I can vouch for the modern epiphone electrics, or at least the one I had. I had a 2019 Epiphone Les Paul Custom. The alpine white with 1 piece mohogany body, gold hardware, ebony fretboard with mother of pearl block inlays. That guitar was PHENOMENAL. It was AS CLOSE as you’re gonna get to a les paul standard. Just to put it in perspective at least for the customs- if you put a epi custom like I just described next to a gibson les paul studio the epi puts it to shame. It was about 98% of the sound of a Gibson LP standard, and about 95% of the feel. To be fair- it was only a 700-800$ guitar. So it makes sense that the frets/neck wouldn’t have quite the same amount of man hours of labor into them. The fretboard was phenomenal, there was fret sprout bigtime though, but once I filed those down and rolled the edges of the neck a bit it became like the destroyer of gibson base model studios.
    In closing I can say if you’re a beginner player who has made enough progress so that you know you won’t quit- you will most likely be in a spot (if you’re a les paul fanboy like me) where you are ready to get out of your first guitar and step up to something that’s a lot nicer- but you aren’t ready to pay 2500-3k for a proper gibson les paul standard- get a 2019+ epiphone les paul custom. It does the Les Paul thing. It is a quality axe that will absolutely take you to the next level where you’re good enough to reward yourself with that big step into a gibson standard/custom. It’ll take you into minor pentatonic land and if you stick with it- just keep playing- you’ll make it to your dream les paul. These epiphone inspired by gibson guitars both acoustic and electric are *phenomenal* at even double their price. Stop thinking about where they’re from. Let go of your preconceived notions and give an epi hummingbird or les paul custom a shot. You’re worth it.
    P.S. don’t ever feel bad about owning a nice guitar with a low skill level- because a guitar you’re in love with will inspire you to play it more often. Seriously. And keep it on your wall! Because if it’s out and in your line of sight you’ll pick it up more often.
    And stop copying eveyone’s songs at some point. Don’t be that guy who’s been playing for 5+ years now but when you pick up a guitar to play you just start playing the same damn radio riffs as everyone else. One little piece at a time start learning WHY these notes sound good and start playing your own stuff. If you been playing 5+ years I don’t wanna hear a radio riff I wanna hear an improvised blues lick.
    I own 2 gibson lp standards now.
    I’m not trying to crap on the studio guys with no binding lol- but I’ve owned both and I promise you a 2019+ upper tier Epi LP kicks the crap out of your studio on every level. just go play one and see uk?

Occasionally I’ll play an electric, but I really want to get that one next. Yes sir, Gibson has finally realized that the budget line needs quality and their efforts have not gone unnoticed in the Epiphone lineup. Thanks for the kind words and the detailed response to this video. I hope folks read what you’ve written here, as it testifies to the quality, brother man 👍🏻

      Yes sir, it’s interesting on the IBG 200 that so many varying opinions exist. I’m glad you have one that makes the grade. Thus far Nick, the IBG J-45 and the IBG Hummingbird are batting 1000. The IBG J-200 has 50/50 reviews. What’s most interesting to me is that Jamie Johnson touts the IBG J-200 and he loves it too. Maybe the message is that the J-200 requires something of the luthier touch, due to the complexity of the size? I do know that all of the IBG models are built by an assigned luthier in the Custom Shop. That also goes for the Masterbilt line. Regardless, you ended up with a winner and that makes me smile 👍🏻

Were you able to play the IBG 45 prior to getting the Slash version? No doubt we're on the same page with Epiphone, as it relates to the Masterbuilt and IBG line. I recently bought a used Texan from Epiphone, and while it is well built, there's not any real punch to it, which I suspect is due to the narrow body. Appreciate you stopping in.

      @@randysrhythm I played both before deciding which one to purchase. IBG is a solid guitar but it did not come with a case, and the finish is satin which I prefer a glossy finish. The neck on the IBG is great and feels really god and it’s comfortable to play. The Slash J45 has a thicker neck and takes some time getting use to. It comes with a better pickup and the fit and finish is incredible. The case is rock solid and what did it for me was the Vermilion Burst. Love that color on the guitar. Both guitars will need bridge pin upgrades, as I installed tusk on mine. Both guitars are similar with the exception of an upgraded pickup, case, and color scheme that separates them. The Slash definitely has a thicker neck profile and stays in tune because it’s more stable.

    Great review, Sir! I'm just curious how's your fretboard looks darker than other IBG hummingbirds I saw on other videos. Does it came that way or did you put some oil on it? :)

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Před rokem +1

      Hi Marshall, that's a great question as I've noticed that it did darken up after oiling the fretboard. Admittedly, I did oil it twice, in a short period of time (I normally do it twice a year, or perhaps 3). The first time was just a precaution (coming across the ocean - a good reason to do it right away) and the second time was to see if it would darken up a bit. It is a little darker after doing that, and I'd expect it to darken up as time moves forward. I use MUSICNOMAD Equipment Care. Don't misunderstand, the fretboard doesn't darken up to the point that you mistake it for ebony, but it darkened up more than it was, let's say. I hope this helps and very much appreciate the input and the question.

      Hi there, appreciate the compliment, feedback and question. I replaced them with ebony. There’s a private luthier in Forney, Texas that I spent a little time with and he had some in his inventory as we worked on the setup. You can typically find these at any guitar shop. I have considered changing the ebony out for bone, but just haven’t done it yet. This thing sings so well at this point, I just haven’t seen the point of it. That said, I’ll probably get to it in time. I have mostly been a fan of bone. I have a custom built 12th Root guitar that I spec’d ebony on and the tone is so fantastic on it that I’ll never replace them with bone, simply due to the balance. Hope that helps.

    My father, has the Gibson cherry burst hummingbird.
    I have the Epiphone hummingbird, and cherry burst, same as yours.
    I kid you not when I say this, they pretty much sound the same.
    I’ve played both extensively, and don’t get me wrong, they Gibson is nicer in terms of fit and finish details, but it’s really not night and day! The price of the Gibson is three times the price of the Epiphone, and it’s not remotely three times the guitar.
    My father and I both played them together, and we were just astonished, looking at each other because they genuinely sound about the same!

      Hi Bobby, there’s a huge difference between them. The IBG Hummingbird is a solid wood and the studio is not. The IBG was built in the Masterbilt factory, which pays a great deal more attention to detail and has one luthier assigned to it from start to finish. Of course there’s nothing wrong with the studio, but there is a massive difference between the two, in terms of quality. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the studio, as they are a nice sounding guitar.

    Hello Randy! First of all, thank you for the amazing review! May I ask what’s the material that the bridge pins are made out of, as shipped from the factory? I’m asking because I just ordered an Indonesian IBG Hummingbird from Sweetwater, and would like to know exactly what I’m getting. Hey Randy.. having both Epi's.. l think the IBG Hummingbird is all around a bit better than my Excellente.. it seems to project better, more balanced tone, a better neck profile for me, it just is simply amazing! I really am no fan of the looks of the guitar, a bit strange burst finish, the parallelogram inlays are a bit odd, the pick gaurd l simply removed.. l do not like the 14:1 ratio tuners ( prefer 18-21:1) and never liked pearloid tuning key, the Indian laurel wood on mine is WAY lighter than yours which is hideous color (almost greenish tan color) so why would l buy one?¿? Well, it's THAT GOOD! It plays like a dream sounds WAY above it's low price point, the guitar is heavy, built like a tank, how it sounds so great with wood so thick is mind blowing! The fret work is near plek'd level, when l changed strings to Nano Elixers l did shave the saddle down a bit to lower the action which was a breeze, the neck is near dead flat no buzzing.. lve had it 3 months and still have not plugged it in! It is loud! Huge difference to the Hummingbird Pro! I can't explain it but it simply is! Sounds like the Beatles spot on tone! Great job Boss!! I loved the first video too btw!! This one was GREAT!!

      Hi James, I think between you and I, we’ve provided every possible reason for someone to buy this underpriced guitar. I am also taken back by the fact that the weight isn’t impacting the sound by dulling it. It seems to me to add to the volume and that surprised me. I think the Excellente is a work of art, but the Hummingbird has such a beautiful tone, it begs me to play it. The Excellente is more of an attention to detail, while the Hummingbird is more of an attention to tone.

      These guitars WILL go up in price just as the Eastman guitars have and just as Shijie guitars have..made in China yes, but made with superior quality to the American made guitars which they emulate.. l have both and l have the American counter parts and can give you many reasons why but it is not an issue where something is made..my point being that great guitars are being made for less money relatively now than anytime in history, the Epiphone is at it's apex since Gibson acquired the superior company building it's best guitars to date (inside Gibson era).. we were lucky or smart enough to get them early on, before they to become $1600-$2200 instruments..and you can believe these prices will be here before you know it!

I actually have it out today playing it. The Hummingbird IBG has become the greatest sounding guitar, square shoulder dread that I have ever owned or played. I adjusted the truss rod when I first got it, just an 1/8th of a turn and that took care of my action needs. Sure you don’t want to move to east Texas?? @bronzesnake7004 Před 2 lety

    Hey Randy. I think the reason Gibson are allowing Epiphone (which they own of course) build these very high quality copies of Gibson guitars comes down to money.
    You most likely know Gibson came seriously close to folding a few years back, and they were forced to liquidate a huge portion of their assets, which were quite numerous as Gibson were famous for hostile take overs of competition, and in many instances they would get majority stock and take over a company and drive it into the dirt, which is shady business to say the least and all the big corps do this for tax reasons.
    The Gibson brand are under very stringent court ordered boundaries where an established percentage of their profit goes to their debtors. Now, this is just my opinion Randy, I have no way of knowing any of this with any certainty, but I've thought about this having had the question you and many other musicians are asking, and that is "why is Gibson allowing Epiphone to not only build these copies, but build them to where they're superior in every way!
    Superior materials, superior construction, and superior playing and sounding instruments!
    Why wouldn't they do this? Epiphone was not in default and therefore anything being produced and sold through Epiphone is pure profit after whatever overhead they have. None of the Epiphone profit is going to the creditors.
    So, knowing how corporate people think and operate, this is my best explanation which makes sense to me, and I've thought about this and cannot come up with any other explanation.
    So, take it as it is, just a regular old man's opinion!
    Take care brother Randy!

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Jack, that never occurred to me, but the logic is sound, to my thinking. I'm just surprised that the price point remains for them. The IBG Hummingbird is a true ringer, since it has that Spruce over Mahogany, all solid. I think the woods may be a touch thicker, which may lend to the additional weight, but that may well be an adder to the tone in this case. It's hard for me to say, but regardless, I couldn't be more pleased at the craftsmanship, tone, playability, sustain and beauty (the latter being just that, the latter as it is the least important, but pretty cool as an adder). What phenomenal comment/input you've added here. A truly quality statement and your input will always be valued on this channel.
