Welcome to the channel folks. My name is Randy Cox and I live in East Texas. I spent most of my life unsatisfied with my guitar progress. So, if you are like I was, I look forward to helping you make some measurable progress. On this channel we do a mix of guitar topics, such as guitar reviews and basic fingerstyle guitar. From time to time we also feature other CZcams artists for a variety of different, but well worth it, reasons. My videos will almost always have commentary as an accompaniment to the music that I either teach, or play. I like getting to know the subscribers on this channel, so that I can better serve them. That said, we'd love to have you on the channel and very much appreciate the opportunity to help you, and/or learn from you. I will always respond to comments that are respectful.

Mackenzie & Marr Review
zhlédnutí 820Před měsícem
New guitar week! I recently ran across a company called Mackenzie & Marr, located in Montreal Canada. Scrolling through the available inventory, I found a Grand Manan Too, which sits somewhere between a dred and a OM/OOO. I received it this week and I have to say, WOW. This is one loud, resonant guitar that screams fingerstyle. If you have a problem getting any volume out of your guitar while p...

Yamaha FS5 Review

The Yamaha FS5 - Would I buy it again?... No Not a bad guitar folks, but far from mind-blowing. One correction to what I said in the video, per a commenter, the color of the top is apparently not due to the cooking of the top, but rather a stain, or? According to him (Wobbz9413) I'm way off line about that. He has a LL16D with an almost white top and it has been treated with the same process. J...

Been following M&M for years, but YOUR review of the Grand Manan (and Cindy's Baby Boat took me over the edge). I just ordered the Manan with Anthem .. so I will be playing soon .. but not as good as YOU or Cindy .. as they say .. "Practice makes Perfect" NOT!! I volunteer and teach GED Math . I tell my students that "Practice Makes Progress" .. Anywho totally enjoy your site Randy!
I have the Epiphone J45 and I think it is an excellent guitar, but my question is if the 2 guitars weigh the same, because the Epiphone is very heavy, I don't have how to compare, since I don't have the Gibson, could you clarify this doubt. And if all solid body guitars are that heavy?
Hey Randy, appreciate your videos. Very helpful. I just bought a new ibg j45 from music store. Brand new. It has small pick guard instead of the really big that they come with. Any idea why? I’ve seen a few online that are new with the smaller guard. It’s very thick. Thx
Hi Brad, appreciate the kind words. Just curious, are you sure it’s not a Banner IBG 45? These are being produced in China, since Indonesia is no more. The reviews I’ve seen are not too shabby, but I’ve never played one. Thanks for reaching out, brother man 👍🏻
Thanks for the video and the sentiment🇺🇸
Hi Michael, you are welcome on both counts, brother man 👍🏻
Oh , Killer guitar !
Thank you for hooking me up, brother man 👍🏻
Colonel , first off , you are right on with your comment. Like Mr.Trump or not He is a man with a family and is human as each and everyone of us. One one should wish something like that on someone. I was not around when the event happened in Dallas but I heard stories of what it was like for my family in Kentucky , Cuba happened and Vietnam was starting up and No one knew what would happen. Pres. Trump could be re-elected or not ,, but the chaos that could have brought to this country , remember we have people who hate the U.S.A. are are looking for a opportunity. All American`s were Blessed ! Now Colonel ,,,, James Taylor ,,,, what could be said. Different tunings , capo placement , different finger placement to make up unforgettable tunes. Randy , You did a great job , might not be 100% but as he say`s he does not do 100% he goes by how he feels when he play`s. And you can say that again "That Girl Cindy Can Play " !!!
Colonel Terry, I can’t think of a single thing to add to that opener! Well played. Always appreciate the kind words as well, brother man.
Awesome cool video thumbs up. Stay well and safe in this crazy world. I agree with you. God bless Donald Trump and His Family.
Much appreciated, Tommy. Mr Smith and Mr Wesson work hand in hand the Lord God to ensure that 👍🏻. Thank you so much for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I agree, lol.
Just a fabulously detailed lesson on this song that most any guitar player wants to play. Brilliant job, Brother Randy ! My No Pick Saturday will be a busy one 😂
Brother Paul, you’re the man 😂. Before long you’ll be teaching fingerstyle on your channel! Thanks for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
I love USA!!
Nuff said 👍🏻
I have to say I totally agree with your review. I bought this exact guitar. I was hoping to be stoked about it, but ultimately just kind of disappointed overall. I’m really leaning toward selling it. For the price point, there are better options and for a little bit more cash the options area lot better. As always great review. God bless.
I think it looks like a 1960’s, but the vibe just isn’t there for you and I. I guess that’s what happens when your expectations are too high. I may have let the reviews taint my expectations a tad 😂. I did find another guitar company out of Canada recently called Mackenzie & Marr. I sure wish I’d have went there instead. After my disappointing purchase of the Yamaha, I found those guys. I was blown away. The prices were much better than Yamaha and the quality was just killer. Appreciate you sharing your experience with us, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I know what you mean. I watched all the reviews and I’m sure that’s what caused me to over expect the build and quality of this guitar. I will definitely check out Mackenzie and Marr!
Top drawer brother. Love from the far side of the Atlantic jamieson and Guinness 😅
Much appreciated, brother. Based on the two flavors you mentioned, I know exactly where you are 😂. I still have a bottle of Middleton, 2002, unopened. A good friend gave it it to me in 02 and I can’t bring myself to open it yet. Appreciate the love and right backatcha, brother man 👍🏻
@randysrhythm I bought a load of epiphones 23s based on your expert opinion . I'm not sorry. Maybe I suffer from too much aquision syndrome and not enough ability. Yeah that's a fact. Your gentle approach to .making me cry is greatly appreciated.
What a kind thing to say. I actually have my Hummingbird out this morning and I’m still in love. I think you made a great move, picking up those killer instruments, brother man 👍🏻
Moved by your statement and subscribed from down here in Australia. Love the guitar lesson. God Bless you brother.
Hi Sam, first of all, thank you for that opening, encouraging message. I have several of the “down under” folks on the channel. I suspect it all started with my good friend Johnny L, who I’ve known for several years now and a good man. Appreciate the the kind words and grateful to have you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
How much do they go for?
I believe these are still going for around $850.00 USD, without a case.
It’s a stunning song, loved listening ❤
Hi Layila, great to hear from you and hope you and yours are doing well. Thank you for the kind words, ma’am 👍🏻
Great lesson and beautiful performance my Dear friend Randy!! Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thank you, my wee brother man Kyle 👍🏻
Love that old song. Thanks!
My new friend, Ms Cindy! So great to hear from you. Yes’m, it is a beautiful song. I have some great memories of when that song was released. James Taylor is a musical genius.
@@randysrhythm I was in high school. Loved that song 😀
I started learning and picking this song on the guitar about three months ago, that is strange . I put the capo on 3rd fret, now I know where to put it. Thanks --- Prayers for Donald Trump ---
It’s a lot of fun to play, brother, eh? It’s always great to hear from you. Yes sir, the research I did told me it is the second fret, if you’re of a mind to do it in the same key. Always appreciate you, brother man and I agree, God bless Donald Trump 👍🏻
Cindy, guitar notes and notions. Nice lady, nice channel. And that was nice playing there at the end bro.
Thank you, brother man 👍🏻
Hey Randy. How goes it my friend? Sir, I may not agree with your politics, but I agree that something intervened to save Mr Trump from that deadly bullet. Im not a religious man, so cant personally put an explanation to it, but he is a very lucky man. Anyway, my friend, its nice to see another post and hope all is well with you and yours. I dont finger pick, just bash away at strumming in a pretty crude way, so the vid is not for me, but Im always happy to see and hear you, brother. Take care, and my hope is that all is well for everyone. Peace and love brother.
Right backatcha, my friend. We are doing better than we deserve over here. It’s okay, we need fingerpickers and bashers 😂. Great hearing from you and the very nice comment, brother man. You’re always welcome at my fire 👍🏻

Sending love right backatcha, Ms Brooke. I count you as a friend, ma’am. Hopefully you and I will be able to sit together and learn from each other before I exit this world 👍🏻
@randysrhythm amen. None of us is getting out alive. 😆 I haven't played in so long. I'm ashamed ro say. The last 2 days i have played a lil bit.
I came back to watch your demo again. I still play my Epiphone IBG J45 . I've used it live quite a bit . I had an LR Baggs Anthem pickup installed in mine . It has plenty of low end . I was looking at my serial number. Mine was also built in July of 2021 and it's #9,142. Our guitars sound very similar. Thanks for the video. I enjoy listening. God bless
@@joshfeatherstone8546 God bless you too, Josh. They are quite killer guitars, brother man 👍🏻
Randy my brother-smooth playing as always and that’s a beautiful guitar. Also, I’m a life long Democrat, but before that I’m an American and public servant, and I hope God continues to watch over us, no matter our differences. It’s only about the red, white and blue. God bless, brother.
@@jamesbruss84 Always appreciate such kind and thoughtful words, my brother. You are too kind. Yes sir, much appreciate your candor and love of country, brother man 👍🏻
Well, Randy, you don't care about me. I'm sorry to hear that. That's a big problem in this country. To many narrow minded people, that don't worry about others .I am a very Christian person, and my god never taught me to be like that.God bless you but I will not give a nickle to your channel.
Hi Larry, perhaps unknowingly, you really just twisted my comments. MSNBC & CNN do that routinely. Just FYI, I have never taken so much as a penny from anyone on this channel. I’ll just end it there, but you deserved a response.
Hi Randy. I'm a new subscriber ... thanks so much for an excellent lesson. I live on the east coast, but became a fan of Texas music years ago when I bought a Radney Foster CD. It had a coupon in it for a subscription to Texas Music Magazine. I remained a subscriber for many years and enjoyed the frequent "sampler" CDs (both new and emerging Texas bands) that was included in many of the issues. BTW, I love your new M&M Manan ... beautiful guitar as well as your playing.
Hi Michael, great to have you here as part of the family. Yes sir, Texas music is a great genre for sure. I used to work with a guy when I was very young, named Deryl Dodd. Our dads were in business together. Deryl went on to be featured in that magazine several times. Really glad to have you here and you are most welcome for the lesson, brother man 👍🏻
Really, I'm just here to hear Randy play; great lesson @Randy's Rhythm.
Hi David, we are going to have you fingersyling like Roy Clark before long 😁. You are too kind. Thank you, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I could only hope; my fingers fumble, lol.
Hi Randy, this is great my friend. You play it really well! I’ll have to learn it now! Stop creating and inspiring more work for me, will ya??? 😂😂😂 Seriously, thanks for the lesson buddy. 👍🏻 Regards, Dave
Hi David! You are most welcome and thank you for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻. Now, off you go to work 😂
Easy to follow, 👍👍
Hi James, mission accomplished, brother man 👍🏻
Great to see you again brother. Always enjoy your playing and videos. Sounds really good. The great thing about that song is that you don’t have to play it exactly. James himself doesn’t play exactly the same every time anyway. Good bless you and your family. I also agree about the bad situation in Pennsylvania.
Great to hear from you, brother. Much appreciate the kind words and support. Lord bless you and yours too, brother man
👋🤠👍✌️Thank you for the lesson 🎶🎶
You’re welcome, brother man Bruce 😁👍🏻
Love that song Randy. You play the lead and I'll play the rhythm.. And yes, this country is really messed up. The media is constantly keeping everyone fighting. And man, you are very good at teaching. Noah picked it right up, in just a couple minutes. Just another awesome video and I'll talk to you soon. Enjoy your vacation too.
My friend, David Hayes! You are too generous. Always appreciate you and your family. Thank you, brother man 👍🏻
Love the song, love your style and especially love your comments 🙏🏻. God be with you.
I paused the video early on and, my phone is being weird and I can't comment without a restart, so I will tag onto this comment and say, Amen and hallelujah. I truly appreciate you Randy. Much love!
Hi Lenny, thank you very much for the kind words and right backatcha, my friend 👍🏻
Hi John, no worries, my friend. I found your comment 😁. Always appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻 Much love, right backatcha
Wow so glad I saw this!
Me too 😂
What a nice, nice fella!! I just happened across this video, I told my wife recently I'd buy a new Bosch dishwasher for the house, (I work for them) , a holiday in Athens for us, and another guitar for me. I don't play live these days but have started busking again and got the love of music/guitars back. I use a Martin dreadnought junior (Mexican made) which I love dearly, but have always wanted a "Gibson". Have seen these IBG and every time I've seen a video I've completely dismissed the Hummingbird for some unknown reason, and only listen to the J45 and J200. Man, I put my studio headphones on to listen to this and goshdarnit if that Hummingbird didn't bring a lump to my throat and a little tear in my eye! I'm absolutely shellshocked now! I live in a small Spanish city and there's only a small guitar shop here and even the big ones in the capital Madrid (a few hours away) don't stock these, so I have to take a gamble on a second hand one if I can find it. Great video and way of presenting, I subbed straight away and will enjoy looking through your content! Thank you!
Well I’ll say this, Mr Busker, welcome back to the world of guitar love! Glad to have you back. Appreciate the commentary and hope you land a great one, just as I did. Don’t forget to check the serial number to be sure that the 5th & 6th digits from the left are 23. That’s the factory code for the old Samick factory in Indonesia. They are really great instruments. You are most welcome, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I will be looking for a IBG model with the serial 23, just to ask, is a Hummingbird Pro with that serial 23 a bad one then? Or just not as good as IBG? Many thanks for your help!
The Pro is laminated back and sides and the quality of build is definitely not the same. The IBG guitars are built in the custom part of that factory. They are daylight vs dark in sound and build quality.
@@randysrhythm Great to know many thanks!
Do you think it is lighter because it has Less internal bracing. I believe they call that scalloping. It’s to bad they changed such a nice guitar. I was going to order one but seen another review that was not all that positive for the one from China. Perhaps they will get better in time.
It could be a combination of things. I forgot to look on this one, but I had also heard that there was not any side bracing, to go along with your thought of less bracing. To your point, less overall bracing. From what I understand, the Chinese factory for Epiphone has experience building electrics, so I think they are in their early days at this factory for acoustics. Appreciate the feedback, brother man 👍🏻
I had older D-45 Martin that would not hold a light to your guitar plus it was very hard on the fingers. Traded it off a few years ago and have never missed it. Love your picking.
Now that’s a compliment! Much appreciated, brother man 👍🏻
I'm looking at 000-15m and the 000-15sm for playing the Blues and flatpicking bluegrass. Leading more towards 000-15sm. I now own Martin 0-18 but I did switch out the saddle for fossil walrus ivory and bridge pins to fossil walrus jawbone. A big improvement in the tonal palette, flavors and colours.
Hi John, I can imagine that it did make a big difference. The 15SM has a vibe all its own. Appreciate the insight, brother man 👍🏻
I subcribed 👍🎸🎸🎸
Guitars .....if possible, gotta play them in person. No matter the brand........a guitar/any instrument has to stand on it's own. Nice comparison. enjoy your videos' 🎸🎸🎸
Hi Bak, I completely agree, if possible. Appreciate the flowers, brother man 👍🏻
Hi Randy, just found your channel and really enjoy and appreciate your guitar perspective. I’m about your age and play every day. I’ve never done open D tuning, just drop D and boy it does sound great. I’m looking for a 000 guitar and my standards as you put it are very high. Do you think if I contacted them, he could give me a price? Do you have a contact #. You play very nice tunes, so please keep doing the videos. Thanks Randy
Thank you Rob! Appreciate the kind words. I think he would. Would you mind emailing me with this question? My email is: asmallstone1977@gmail.com
Hello Randy you sure make your guitar sound pretty I have never done open tuning before many thanks my friend I shall try!♥
Well thank you, Ms Kathy and glad I could provide a bit of encouragement, ma’am 👍🏻
I just bought an Indonesian made IBG Hummingbird today from my local music store. The last Samick one they had in stock (2022 manufacture date.) Plays like a dream.
You’ll have to pry my Indonesian made IBG Hummingbird out of my cold dead hands! We are on the same page, in the same book, brother man 👍🏻
Great post Randy, I have owned a Mackenzie & Marr Dionisio cut away cedar top guitar for 2 years now. My 1983 Martin D-35 and 1986 Takamine George Harrison model both 'gently weep' sitting in the corner waiting to be picked up and played. That's how much I think of the Dionisio! M&M Guitars are the real deal folks!!! And one of these days I'll get another!
Hi Bob, thanks so much for the kind words and the commentary. I enjoyed the pun with gently weeps, most especially 😂. But as you say, that’s how highly you think of M&M. I’m right there with you, brother man 👍🏻
For real ! ! ???? Can't believe the price you paid for that guitar......with a case ????? WOW ! I'd like one of those just like that in a 00 size with a pickup. 🎸🎸🎸
For real! It is a great guitar 👍🏻
Love mine as well, brother. A Grand Manon... it's a beautiful slope--shouldered dreadnought.
Hi Daniel, looks like there’s two of us now, brother man 👍🏻
I have owned an FS3 and a FG3. In my opinion, the FG3 was a cannon, and the FS3 was just ok. I actually found a Guild Westerly OM-120 that I liked much better than the FS3 for half the price.
Hi David, I’ve heard several folks compliment the 120. Glad you were able find it. The FG3 is on my list to play, so I much appreciate the heads up on that, brother man 👍🏻
It sounds as Jorma Kaukonen' s finger style picking! J' aime ça au boutte merci!!
You are most welcome and thank you for such a kind comment 👍🏻
The Epiphone is a little bit brighter, but i mean in this "Price Range" a great sound. Thanks fore this Review!
It certainly is descriptive in the tone and as you say, a touch brighter. Great analysis and you’re very welcome 👍🏻
The bone pins seem to have rounded off the tone ever so slightly in a pleasing way.
Hi Michael, it’s subtle, for sure, and that’s an interesting take/description that I’ve not even considered or heard. I’m going to listen to this one again. Always appreciate your feedback, brother man 👍🏻
So Groovy! What’s the name of the song?
@@andrepessoa5865 Hi Andre, it’s actually called Windy & Warm. I think it was originally written for Chet Atkins. Glad you found it interesting, brother man 👍🏻
It sounds just like you described it. The Gibson is richer in the low end with very subtle highs (yet still almost a scooped sound) while the Epiphone is all mids. Of course, the Gibson is an objectively better guitar (and for 4x the price it should be clearly so), but I'm sure there are lots of people out there whose voices might be better suited to the Epi and lots of recording situations where the tone of the Epi might be preferable.
You make a lot of great points, Michael. Great to get your input on this. You are welcome here anytime, brother man 👍🏻
Bought an Excellent yesterday!
Excellent, Benjamin!! Assuming you love it? What an instrument, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm It is a beautiful guitar! I think I need some intonation work on it though.
