It's that time of year again - CHRISTMAS AT THE CHATEAU has begun! Happy Advent!
Follow all of us as we get the chateau ready for a spectacular French Christmas.
Each day will be filled with decorating, cooking, gift buying, carol singing and discovering ancient Christmas traditions from around the world.
Thanks Oliver for explaining the Catalan Tradition. I've lived in Catalonia for over 25 years and my husband is Catalan. We love our 'caga Tiós' and we have a little 'caganer' for our nativity scene. I think the log also represents how grateful people are towards the log that has heated the house and gives us so much through life and death when we use it for fuel. There are lots of expressions or insults in Catalonia about caca. Enjoyed you Yule log competition. Bon Nadal from Catalonia! It's so lovely to hear people sharing Christmas traditions from around the world. Being in an international family we have accepted and embraced our traditions from both our countries and our kids love it. We also celebrate the arrival of the 3 Kings/Wisemen. The Caganer! When I explain the Caganer to strangers they never believe me. I love this tradition and that it has been included in The Chateau Diaries Advent Christmas vlogs.

Oliver made a “ Swiss roll” recipe because it had flour in it. Stephanie made a “roulade” which is always without flour…so great for gluten free. A Roulade is always softer and more like a desert than a cake, it will crack when you roll it because it’s supposed to. I bet they both tasted gorgeous.

The logs looked delicious, but I'm not sure about the pooing part lol! I'm with Steph about putting that figurine on the bookshelf instead of the nativity lol! Merry Christmas!
I also agree it would be much nicer on the bookshelf. lol Does not fit in with the Nativity cene at all. Does not seem to work out as it should, I do not believe.

Agree, fascinating I had never heard of this before and have since seen a vlog saying it is also a tradition in parts of Italy, (Nicky Positano). Who knew. That vlog showed a shop/studio where Creche and caricature's are made.

Yesterday I was almost in tears when Phillip gave you his gift. Today, however I'm at a loss for words. I couldn't stop laughing at the poo man. I lived in Spain for 12 years and I must admit I was shocked at first when I first came across the tradtion of adding the pooing man to the Belen or nativity scene. Bizarre!
Could have loved Advent 2, except for the defacating figurine which disgusted me! I am glad I didn't grow up in that nasty tradition insulting The Holy Family!

So interesting! I spent Christmas in Barcelona three years ago and it was incredible. I didn't see any of the traditions Oliver shared with us but I must say the city is truly magical at that time of year. The midnight mass on Christmas Eve at the Basisilca Santa Maria del Mar was absolutley enchanting ✨

I love everything Catalan since my first trip there at 16. People still gather in the squares and dance in a ring holding hands to music played on crumhorn and goatskin drums. Ancient traditions dating to mideval days, so just like the old Italian Buffo characters the humor is full of ancient themes and ideas.
That figure was way oversized for the rest of the figures it took over the entire scene unfortunately, agree, better at a distance.
