  • Fixing a Broken Gaming PC That Won't Post or Boot. Today we will take a look at a real scenario where a new computer won't POST or Boot, but fans are spinning. We will need to troubleshoot and diagnose this PC to find out whether what hardware has failed so we can RMA the item. We will use the swap out method with known good hardware to see if we get post to BIOS. This means we need to test PSU, RAM, Motherboard, CPU and GPU.

    damn, I have this exact same motherboard type. B550 tomahawk and it will no longer post no matter what I do. According to the LEDS on the board where the power cable connects to the board stays solid on VGA and have no video, I also have a speaker connected to the speaker header to give beep codes, 1 long and 2 short. I've tried at least 2 different video cards and the third onboard option and still can't get it to post. i've tried different memory sticks as well. In an act of desperation i even removed the M2 drive then used the EZ flash to reset the bios. i think its safe to say my mobo took a dump on me. The only thing I haven't tried yet is a different power supply. I had the PC for 3 years and it just started not posting the other day! Thanks for reading my comment.

    My son built a computer that would not post. Both memory sticks worked, but only one at a time in one slot. I pulled the CPU and found a tiny bit of thermal paste in the underside of the CPU, on two pads. I cleaned the underside of the CPU with alcohol. I used a small paint brush with just a little alcohol and carefully cleaned the pins on the motherboard. Put it all back together and it worked properly.

    Opinions? I dug out my first ever PC, a Fujitsu Siemens from circa 1996/97. I powered it up for the first time in what must be 10-15yrs or so and it just woke from the dead like it had never been in storage! Booted with WinXP which I updated it to not long after buying it. Still runs superbly with the IDE drives (Master/Slave), 56K modem and all LOL! No GPU. Question is: What do I do with it? As it stands it's just a sentimental thing really.

      My first computer is a first generation Pentium that ran Windows 95. It got updated to Win 98 when an IT guy couldn't figure out that the 56K modem card was bad preventing it from completing boot. He didn't see Brian's video. LOL!

    My initial guess was that it was an unsupported CPU and the BIOS needed updating with an older chip. It just goes to show that although brand new mobo's are rarely faulty, sometimes they can be. Personally I've had the most problems with MSI boards so I never use them any more but as you say, it happens with all manufacturers from time to time.

    Hello, i got a similiar problem with old pc. When i turn on the pc fans will spin fast and black screen. If i want to turn off the pc power button doesnt work and i have to pull off the plug. I have tried changing ram, positions, with or without GPU, taking out CMOS battery, changing disk sata connection and nothing worked. Is there something else i could try?

    Thanks. Don't feel obliged to reply but I'm currently struggling with a GPU here. I was unlucky enough to yank the hdmi cable one day and it went all black. Unfortunately I've tried many things, reinstalling windows, properly uninstalling drivers in safe mode, reinstalling new ones etc .. just can't get the 1080 to work - HOWEVER, I do get this old Radeon 5770 to work. The system runs just fine with it.
    Do you think it may have happened that the PCI slots were slightly damaged but only such that the much older card will work - but the 1080 just won't? By this I mean, do you think it may be that the power flow to the motherboard/PCI slots were somehow compromised in such a way that the more power hungry 1080 just won't work but the older, less power hungry one will?
    Again, don't feel obliged to answer. Just felt like throwing this one out there in case you or someone immediately recognizes an issue.

      Very hard to say with full diagnosis of the system

    • @rebjorn79
      @rebjorn79 Před 2 lety

      @@Britec09 Thanks for reply. I'll likely end up bringing in another GPU with higher power req than the 5770, perhaps on par with the 1080 or higher - if that one works then there's probably unfortunately an issue with the 1080. At least then I won't have to replace the whole thing just to test the 1080. I've been unable to determine issues with other parts of the setup.
      Anyway keep up the good work!

    Couldn't you just avoid using that 1 slot since it has 4 of them ? I know some boards like you to use certain order slots for dual channel but wouldn't it at least boot ?

    • @mncdssctn9110
      @mncdssctn9110 Před 2 lety

      Usually you can, but the motherboard is still faulty, and you will want it replaced while the warranty is still good, because at some point you may want to have four sticks of RAM in there.

    Rookie mistake. Building fully in case without a full outside of case test. The cause may be, that there is a short between the memory slot and the case.
