    This is a 1984 Ranger 395-V i/o inboard, outboard bass boat. It has a Mercruiser 260/Chevy 350 engine. I have been restoring it. I just replaced the gimbal housing, reinstalled the motor, and now I'm installing the gimbal bearing.

    So actually when the notches are toward the rear you can rotate inner section of bearing to remove & replace. The earlier units were all installed that way! Much faster & easier job

    Nice instruction video and have one question: what the function of the dot on the glimbal bearing located at 10 o'clock ? it doesn't mark the grease hole.

    My retainer clip keeps popping out halfway around. I ordered a new bearing. Perhaps I’ll put JB Weld on the new one.

    I am confused about the retainer ring. On the Alpha One gen 1, is there a retainer ring on the gimbal bearing??

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před měsícem

      No, there is not. There was a gimbal housing bearing retainer snap ring on early models from the 60s to early 70s.

      I bought the MBS Mfg brand alignment tool from “a major online retailer”.

    Thanks for your reply yesterday. I have one more question. When I pulled my gimbal bearing out, there was no grease seal behind it. Also, when I look at my gimbal bearing, there is no hole to add grease. I turned that corrugated silver metal piece that spins around the outside all the way around looking for it and there’s no hole. Then I checked my new gimbal bearing. There is also no hole on that one. Do I need a grease seal and gimbal bearing with a hole in it or is there a new version now?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před rokem +1

      Some of the new Gimbal bearings are sealed and do not need to be greased. I would still put a grease seal in it. The grease seal will slow down the water leaking into your boat if you have a u joint bellow failure.

    What did you find was the easiest tool to use to remove the seal behind the gimbal?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před 3 lety +2

      Kyle Richards- I used a screwdriver and a hammer to remove the seal by knocking it out from the back (I had already removed the housing). A seal puller- similar to one used for axles on cars- is what I would have used if I hadn’t removed the gimbal housing.

    • @neverclevernorwitty7821
      @neverclevernorwitty7821 Před 3 lety +1

      slide hammer worked for me like a charm, the seal is far easier to remove than the gimbal bearing in my experience.

    I have question I can not find the answer to, in the video I see you knocked the grease seal in all the way, I also did this but notice that part of the slotted cutout at the bottom of the housing is open from the grease side of the seal, is this correct or should seal not be knocked in all the way so to cover this opening, which go into boat?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před rokem

      The seal is installed all the way. I believe the slotted cutout is a drain/vent.

      @@ProWrenching Great thanks for the fast reply Sir., That's the way I will leave it then, got back on it today, not much left to do finally, gutted all the wood out and replace with coosa board, looking forward to getting it back on the water this year. Great video's you posted on your work Thanks Again.

    The notches face aft so the barring can be replaced without pulling the carrier "the carrier has the notches " by inserting the alignment tool into the barring and twisting it sideways and out through the notches leaving the carrier in place, reverse the process to install the new barring. I bought my boat used and the previously owner had the carrier and barring installed backwards like this video. Do not install this backwards!

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Mercruiser has a service bulletin (85-26) stating the gimbal bearing should not be replaced without replacing the cartridge/carrier. Replacing the bearing without replacing the cartridge “should not be done under any circumstance”. The bearing is selectively fitted to the cartridge during manufacturing. It must remain together as a matched set. Failure do this could result in a bearing failure. Mercruiser says to install the bearing removal installation slots inward so they can no longer be removed from the cartridge while installed in the gimbal housing. I have installed correctly per the manufacturer.

    How far back did you drill your hole on the alignment shaft sir?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před rokem +1

      On my boat- it was 9 1/8” from the tip of the tool to the center of the hole.

  • @KristinMoore
    @KristinMoore Před rokem +1

    Amazing videos. Thank you so much!! Can you explain how to measure the distance for drilling the hole on the gimbal bearing install tool. I have already removed my gimbal bearing so I can’t use that as a guide.

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před rokem +1

      You want to put the alignment bar in the engine coupler and pull it out about a 1/4 inch. Since your bearing is already removed you will need to use a measuring tape to measure to the witness marks that show the bearing seat bottom in the gimbal housing where the gimbal bearing bottoms out then mark the alignment bar . Pull the alignment bar out and set the driver the thickness of the gimbal bearing further up the shaft.

    Hoping to pick your brain. I was out yesterday in my boat which has the mercruiser 260 and alpha 1 gen 1 stern drive. At about 1500 RPM in forward gear I get a vibration and the boat will not go past 2500 RPM while in forward gear, vibration the whole time. I'm thinking the u-joints are smoked?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před 2 lety

      I would remove the sterndrive and inspect the u joints and bellows and gimbal bearing. You don't want the u joints coming apart and damaging the gimbal housing.

    After installed, is it more effective to grease the gimbal bearing when the motor running?

    • @ProWrenching
      @ProWrenching  Před 2 lety +2

      No, I don’t recommend doing maintenance while the engine is running due to moving parts, heat, exhaust, etc.
